Columbia High School To Present “Disney’s Aladdin JR.” e’s a poor boy from the streets. She’s the daughter of a sultan. Can their love defy the odds? Find out when Columbia High School performs “Disney’s Aladdin JR.” The school will present the show on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, March 25, 26 and 27. At press time, details were still being determined on how the show will be presented. It will either be a live performance or a recorded performance that will be available to view online.

The district’s website, www.columbiabsd.org, will have upto-date details on the performance closer to opening night.

“Disney’s Aladdin JR.” is an adaptation of the Disney movie “Aladdin.” “It’s about a boy who meets the love of his life, but he needs a genie to help him achieve his dreams,” said Isaiah Spencer, a sophomore who portrays Aladdin in the show. “Audiences can expect fun, excitement and some surprises.”

Princess Jasmine, emphasized that the show will be a family-friendly night of entertainment. “It’s a really funny show, full of spirit and energy,” she stated.

The Columbia production features a cast of 14 along with several “performing crew members,” said director Janet Wood. “I call them ‘performing crew members’ because they do more than just move something on stage,” she explained.

“They perform in some of the musical numbers.”

The cast and crew also features Madison Quarry, Isaiah Manfred, Alayna Morales, Alaina Riedel, Megan VanBuren, Alissa Phillips, Samia Anderson, Raiden Ferrer, Carly VanBuren, Amina Williams, Ciara Ramos, Levi Spencer, Jalaysha Gonzales, AJ Morales and Alex Phillips.

Wood said choosing to do a “junior” version of a Disney show gave her the needed flexibility for a particularly uncertain year.

For 20 years, Dr. Dale Treese has organized a golf tournament that brings golfers from as far away as Texas and Florida to play for prizes and give back to the community.

“Traditional Disney shows are not available for streaming either, so this gave us that option since Disney JR. shows are,” she added.

Wood, who has been directing shows at Columbia for 13

years, said having to cancel last year’s musical at the last minute was devastating to the cast and crew.

“Two-thirds of the kids who were in that show are in this one,” she noted, “so they are very excited to be back on stage and to have the chance to perform this year.”

Ireland is the author of the novel “Dread Nation” and its sequel, “Deathless Divide.”

She is also the former co-editor-in-chief of FIYAH Literary Magazine of Black Speculative Fiction, for which she won a World Fantasy Award.

Part of the Story is a bookbased program that engages teens in discussing topics with real-life impact and prompts them to create a call to action for their community. On March 27, York County teens will talk with Ireland about the themes in “Dread Nation” and then work together in small groups to create a billboard design. Lamar Advertising will provide some instruction, and the designs will be evaluated by a panel of judges. The winning design will be displayed on billboards around York County.

Treese, who began playing golf in high school and has been playing for more than 50 years, said the tournament offers a fun day for golfers.

“This is different from a standard charity golf event,”

he stated. “If someone enjoys match play, which I consider to be the ultimate game of golf, this incorporates match play into a charity event. It’s entirely different than what people are used to, but they love it once they try it.”

The tournament is supported by the Pinnacle Foundation, a nonprofit that provides assistance and support to specialneeds and critically ill people.

The Pinnacle Cup benefits the Elizabethtown-based Camp Ladybug, a summer program

for children and adults with mental or physical challenges.

“I’m excited to mark our 20th year of this tournament,” Treese said. “We have had a number of sponsors and players stay with us throughout the years, and we’ve been able to contribute $89,000 to charity. I’m hoping this year we’ll get the participation to eclipse $100,000.”

Rivertown Theatre Productions is a nonprofit, and proceeds are used to either fund the next production or give back to the community.

The organization’s home base is Art Printing Company, located in the Miller mansion, where the play will be held. The setting is perfect, Wright noted, because it not only serves as an eerie backdrop to a murder mystery, but it also shows audiences how their ticket purchase will make a difference.

“I would encourage people to come out and see the show and let them know that the historical building the play is being featured in will be undergoing restoration, so most of the profits will be going toward that,” Wright explained.

Wright and Mimnall have big plans for Rivertown Theatre Productions, including expanding their reach beyond Columbia.

“Most charity events have a four-person scramble setup,” Treese said. “I wanted to come up with something unique. I developed this tournament to be a match play tournament with teams of two people.”

The field is limited to 64 teams overall, with two divisions available for teams to choose from. The Tournament Division is for teams with players age 54 and under, and the Senior Division is for teams with players ages 55 and older.

“In the Tournament Division, each team will play three nine-hole matches against different teams,” Treese explained. “Each hole is like its own mini tournament, and it’s a scramble format that takes the best score of the two players and compares it to the opposing team. Whoever has the lower score wins the hole.”

Up to 14 teams will be eligible for the championship match play rounds to determine the overall tournament champions.

Participants Invited To Move For Life

For 35 years, Align Life Ministries has been holding an annual Walk Run for Life fundraiser. This year, the organization formerly known as Susquehanna Valley Pregnancy Services will hold an expanded event called Move for Life: Walk Run Plus.

An in-person event will be held on Saturday, May 8, at The Junction Center, 1875 Junction Road, Manheim. The fundraiser also features a vir-

tual option for participation.

“The in-person event will offer a 5K run and 1-mile walk simultaneously, starting at 9 a.m.,” said Heather Muncy, events director for Align Life Ministries. “If an individual or team prefers to participate virtually, they can choose their own safe, healthy, fun activity anytime between now and May 8.”

For example, participants may choose to walk, run or even jump rope. The virtual component began last year,

Muncy said, when the organization had to shift away from an in-person fundraiser due to the pandemic.

“Participants decided to jump rope, dunk basketballs, take family hikes, bicycle rides, Frisbee, golf, run, walk … the possibilities were endless,” she recalled. “We then realized the opportunity to expand our event in general to include a virtual - or ‘plus’ option.” Participants can decide the length and time of their activity, she explained, and then submit a photo or short video to show what they did. They can also plan to attend the in-person event.

“Those who are participating virtually can join us on May 8 for a grand celebration and pick up their prizes at the same time,” Muncy stated.

The in-person event will feature a family-friendly walk and chip-timed 5K run as well as free Kids’ Zones with live entertainment, interactive inflatables, face painting, snow cones and more.

Move for Life is an important event for the organization, Muncy noted, adding

that it not only helps further the mission of promoting the sacredness of life, but it also helps raise funds to serve more people in need. “It is our biggest fundraising event, providing 15% of our annual budgeted income,” she stated.

She encourages anyone to participate in the Move for Life, whether virtually or in person. “If you’re looking for ways to put your life-affirming beliefs into action and truly help your local community, please join us,” she remarked. “The funds you raise - whether it’s $50 or $5,000 - all are used to meet the immediate needs of the pregnant, parenting and post-abortive clients we serve. Your efforts help point people to Jesus. Plus, you get to enjoy a big celebration party with others who share your values in honoring God’s gift of life.”

After Crystal Yunginger, who has a background in gerontology, moved to New Holland, she asked her mother-in-law, Joan Yunginger, director of social services with CrossNet Ministries, if there were memory cafes in the area. Joan answered, “That’s on our agenda.”

In March of 2019, Crystal became a volunteer with ELANCO Dementia Friendly Community (DF), an outreach of Garden Spot Village (GSV).

In June of 2019, the organization launched memory cafes to provide settings for individuals with dementia and their caregivers to enjoy social engagement and conversation about relevant topics in a stigma-free environment.

By September of 2020, Crystal was working as coordinator for the organization, which moved to join Dementia Friendly America (DFA) in November of that year, becoming Dementia Friendly Lancaster County (DFLC). At the same time, Crystal became a champion for Dementia Friends PA, which

gave her the opportunity to host Dementia Friends sessions. In January, Crystal held her first Dementia Friends information session in a virtual format. The session covered key messages about dementia and how it affects individuals, among other topics. It ended with participants developing a plan involving ways to make the community more dementia friendly.

To introduce the organization to community members, a pamphlet about Dementia Friendly Lancaster County and a volunteer guidelines booklet have been created. The booklet outlines the ways people can serve, including an advisory board, which acts as the organization’s eyes and ears in the community, and a working group, which furthers DFA initiatives and plans events. Crystal noted that people with dementia and caregivers will be essential to the group, but that representatives from businesses and organizations will be important as well. “We want to discuss ways businesses can be more dementia friendly to customers, (such as) creating an atmosphere that is conducive to a customer with dementia or supporting an employee who is a caregiver,” she said.

Melody Karick, who serves as director of memory care with GSV, noted that a goal of the organization is to eliminate stereotypes. “One of our hopes is to break the stigma of dementia, by making people aware that it’s OK to have this disease,” she said. “We don’t need to hide it or be ashamed of it, and we are the people that can make a difference.” She added that when she trains team members at GSV’s Meadow View Memory Support campus, she focuses on showing them different approaches to a situation.

“There is a way to enhance quality of life for someone who is going through this and their care partners,” said Crystal, who is planning a Wednesday, April 28, breakfast for a limited number of people. The breakfast will bring key businesses in the Lancaster County area that are already doing dementia work on board with the organization. “(The breakfast is about) how we can partner together to make this a dementia-friendly Lancaster County,” said Crystal.

That’s the message behind Blankets of Honor, an organization that works to recognize veterans and their supporters.

Blankets of Honor began as a subcommittee of the Marietta Legion Riders Post 466 about a year ago, said David Chobanoff, chief marketing officer. “ We give a blanket to a veteran, a Gold Star parent or a vet supporter, and we do a presentation,” he explained. “We hand them a blanket depicting the branch they (or their loved one) served in.”

The blankets not only represent comfort and warmth to the recipient, but also have a deeper meaning, he stated.

“The threads of a blanket are intertwined, and that represents how we are holding the person up. We are supporting them,” he said. “We want to do everything we can do for the people who need us. Once they receive a blanket from us, they become part of our family.”

Subaru of America Inc., joined by its two regional independent distributors, Subaru of New England and Subaru Distributors Corp., recently announced its continued commitment to supporting people affected by the COVID-19 pandemic by helping provide an additional 100 million meals to Feeding America. Each dollar helps to provide at least 10 meals secured by Feeding America on behalf of local member food banks.

This donation is double the automaker’s April 2020 donation, in which it helped provide 50 million meals to the hunger-relief organization.

Locally, the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank will benefit from the donation.

The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, a member of Feeding America, has reported that demand for food assis-

tance is at record high levels.

Thousands of families in central Pennsylvania are experiencing food insecurity for the first time as a result of the pandemic. Of those individuals, one-third are children.

The Subaru franchise, with its 633 retailers nationwide, will work with Feeding America to disburse the donation to the organization’s 199 food banks across the U.S. To ensure that food banks with the highest need are served, Subaru will allocate 20% of the donation to national food programs and food banks with the highest food insecurity rates and child food insecurity rates. Furthermore, participating Subaru retailers nationwide have made supplemental donations to their local Feeding America member food banks, currently totaling an additional 5.6 million meals to those in need,

totaling 105 million meals donated from Subaru.

Local dealerships in central Pennsylvania that will help provide 99,000 meals to Central Pennsylvania Food Bank include Faulkner Subaru Harrisburg, Apple Subaru and Lancaster County Motors Subaru.

To join the effort, Subaru and its retailers invite consumers to make their own donation to Feeding America. Donations will be directed to the food bank that serves the donor’s ZIP code, giving everyone an opportunity to help their communi-

Lancaster County Community Foundation has announced its 2021 LEAP Sessions. For several years, the foundation has partnered with local, regional, and national experts to present these opportunities for community members to learn new ways of caring for Lancaster County. The programs are free.

The first LEAP Session will be “Solidarity, Not Charity” with Jayme Wooten. It will take place virtually on Thursday, March 18, from noon to 1:30 p.m. Wooten will explore the history of mutual aid and participatory community engagement, as well as the work being done that centers self-determination and the role of philanthropy and nonprofit organizations in transformative change.

During the pandemic and the subsequent changes to shopping, dining, and business practices, websites have been indispensable.

“More and more during COVID, (the internet) becomes the place where transactions happen. (People are) placing orders and buying products (online),” explained marketing expert Adam Grim. “Websites are the first impression for the business. In most cases these days, people are looking at your website before they’re willing to have a call with you or stop by your location.”

Grim has worked in digital marketing in Lancaster County for nearly a decade. With a business partner, he built Sparrow Websites before recently shifting his focus from doing the design work to helping business owners develop content and opening Bootstrap Local.

“I have a passion for those businesses who have a great idea, a lot of grit and determination, but don’t have a huge budget for marketing,” Grim said.

Grim is a member of the Southern Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce and has been a guest speaker on the subject of effectively using the web to market small businesses. Additionally, he offers marketing advice with Lancaster SCORE, which provides free mentoring and education for business owners and entrepreneurs.

RESPONSIBILITIES: The purpose of this position is to lead other service technicians, design solutions for difficult problems, be on call for emergencies, handle multiple projects, and meet timelines.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES: Performs at a journeyman level to troubleshoot, repair and maintain material handling equipment includes but not limited to belt tracking, component adjustment/replacement, component lubrication, etc. Installs, maintains, and troubleshoots PLC programs (AB and Siemens), relay logic, ladder diagrams, control components-- photo eyes, motor starters, relays, limit switches, proximity sensors, timers, solenoids, Servo drives, frequency inverters, linear drives, tachs, and encoders. Maintains and troubleshoots electrical, pneumatic and mechanical issues for automation system components including conveyors, Sorter, ASRS, Spiral and Gantry Pal/Depal materials induction system. Modifies and fabricates parts as needed using basic and machine shop tools. Creates and closes Work Orders to include labor hours, equipment maintenance, and parts used into asset management system. Develops work plan for emergency repair of critical assets to include coordinating with operations, locating parts/tools for repair, scheduling time with equipment, etc. Leads and audits Preventative Maintenance procedures/ practices. Develops training plans for service technicians.

Performs all work in accordance with established safety procedures. Performs other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: No formal supervisory responsibilities in this position. May provide informal assistance such as technical guidance and/or training to coworkers. May coordinate work and assign tasks.

QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required. Associates Degree (AA/AS) in Mechanical or Electrical field of study preferred. Minimum of 4 years of related experience and/or training.

SKILLS: Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Strong organizational and analytical skills. Ability to provide efficient, timely, reliable and courteous service to customers. Must be a committed team player committed to working in a quality environment. Basic skills with Microsoft Office Outlook, Word and Excel. Physical requirements include stooping, long periods of standing, walking, climbing stairs / ladders and ability to lift / carry heavy loads of 50 lbs. or more. Previous leadership and vendor management experience preferred. Availability to work overtime as needed.
