“Matilda the Musical” makes magic on stage Taking a seat at the table

“Ithinkthis is a really funny show,” said Eastern York High School senior Austin Kelly, describing “Matilda the Musical.” “Every time I’m watching something on stage, I’m laughing.” Eastern York High School will present “Matilda the Musical” at 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 16, through Saturday, March 18, with an additional performance at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday.

“Matilda,” based on the book by Roald Dahl, tells the story of the title character, a precocious young

girl who struggles to fit in with her family and at school. “She’s a miracle - she’s super smart and she has magical powers,” explained Abi Solihin, a junior who plays the title role. “She can move things with her mind. This show is all about overcoming obstacles in life and solving problems.”

Austin, who portrays Miss Trunchbull, the headmistress of Matilda’s school, said while the show is funny, it has some emotional depth as well. “There are parts that are sad in a way and there are emotional parts, but there are a lot of lighthearted moments and a lot

of goofy points,” he stated. “You’re not going to see this show and leave feeling bogged down.”

Senior Jesse Richardson portrays Matilda’s teacher, Miss Honey, in the musical. “This is a great show for all ages,” she remarked. “What’s so cool about ‘Matilda’ is it’s a show about a little girl essentially overcoming these big problems, standing up to a bully, so younger kids will relate to that. Older kids will appreciate the comedic, lighthearted parts, and adults will understand the deeper undercurrent of Matilda having a tough life.”

The role of Miss Trunchbull is traditionally gender swapped, and Eastern York has also gendered swapped the role of Matilda’s father, Mr. Wormwood, casting junior Lillian Cichocki. Lillian said the role allows opportunity for broad humor. “We get a lot of comedy out of playing these parts,” she said, referring to her and Austin’s roles. “It’s really fun, and we get a lot of laughs.” She added that along with humor on stage, audiences can expect to see a visually stunning show, noting, “All of our costumes are absolutely amazing.”

Director Rebecca Kurtek emphasized that the cast of 40 - which includes about a dozen middleschool students - gets to work on a stage filled with impressive sets and special effects. “Our set design is really awesome this year,” she remarked. “We have a 15-foot bookcase on stage. There’s a lot of magic that occurs in this show as well, since Matilda can move things with her mind.”

Overall, “Matilda the Musical” will leave audiences in a good mood, Jesse said. “It’s such a sweet show,” she shared. “It makes you smile.”

Margaret Thatcher once said, “If you want something done, ask a woman.” There’s a whole lot getting done in Lancaster County, because for the first time ever, all of the Chambers of Commerce in the county are led by women. Each woman brings a wealth of experience and a unique perspective to her role, but all of the leaders share a common goal:

They want to make their community a great place to live and work.

Denise Grove, who started her role as executive director of the Elizabethtown Area Chamber of Commerce in February of 2022, said the job offers her a way to really connect with others. “As a lifetime resident of Elizabethtown, I had a strong desire to work where I could make a difference and be a part of strengthening our community,”

about trash management

Learning

For more than 20 years, York County Solid Waste Authority (YCSWA) has been offering the Tour Scholarship Program to local schools, paying for the cost of buses and drivers needed to take field trips to the York County Resource Recovery Center (YCRRC). In return for this scholarship, each class completes an activity or project on an aspect of solid waste management, such as recycling or litter prevention. This year, two Eastern York School District schools - Canadochly and Wrightsville elementary schools - will

be participating in the program.

“YCSWA sponsors the Tour Scholarship Program for York County schools to incentivize schools to bring their students here to learn how their trash in York County is managed and eventually recycled into electricity,” said Ruthanne Jones, community services specialist for YCSWA. “It’s the hope of the York County Solid Waste Authority that both students and educators, as well as parent chaperones, develop a greater appreciation for trash management and discover that their household trash does not end up in a landfill but rather comes here and is recycled into electricity.”

she remarked, a sentiment shared by Heather Valudes, who has been president and CEO of the Lancaster Chamber of Commerce since June of 2022. “I love Lancaster and the work that we are able to advance to make our employer community as strong as possible,” she said, noting that the Lancaster Chamber is countywide and represents nearly 1,500 businesses, almost half of the county’s workforce.

perspective matches that of Kristie Schmid, who has been executive director of the Manheim Area Chamber of Commerce since March of 2021. “I love seeing our community respond to the revitalization in town, the increase in businesses and the new community events,” Schmid said. “It’s fulfilling to put your time into something and then see others have pride in it as well.”

finding enough employees,” said Kerry Meyers, who stepped down as executive director of the Mount Joy Chamber of Commerce after more than 11 years and is now executive assistant to Zell. “And for our small shops in Mount Joy, it is getting customers in their doors. We need the community to support small local businesses.”

be brave enough to pull up a chair. If you are afraid, do it anyway.”

That’s a feeling Branle said she understands. “My worst enemy has always been the negative voice in my head, telling me to question my worthiness,” she stated. “If you, too, have a voice like that, learn to tell her to be quiet.”

For Ashley Zell, who became executive director of the Mount Joy Chamber of Commerce in January, the job brings a chance to get to know her community. “The friends and connections made and the interaction with the Chamber members and community at our numerous different events are definitely the biggest rewards of this position,” Zell said.

The women also remarked that holding the job offers a chance to see their communities thrive. “It’s seeing kids dancing at the farmers market,” commented Rebecca Branle, who has been executive director of Venture Lititz since August of 2021. “It’s celebrating big wins with merchants. It’s watching this town become ever more alive with art, culture and community pride.” Her

For some of the Chamber leaders, the role is a full-time job. For others, it’s something they do in addition to other employment. As a financial adviser for Edward Jones, Jona Green serves as head of the Southern Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce on a volunteer basis, but she’s just as committed to that role as she is her paid job. “The biggest reward is absolutely the connection to our schools and community,” said Green, who has been leading her Chamber since March of 2022. “Our reach is large, but our heart is rooted in service and making more things possible for our members.”

Although each of the Chambers faces its own challenges, the directors all project positivity when it comes to their communities. “Right now, we see the biggest challenge for a number of our members to be

Liz Ackerman, who has been executive director of the Northern Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce since January of 2019, said her organization faces a challenge of keeping pace with expansion. “We are growing at an exponential rate,” she explained, noting that she values maintaining a close connection with all of the Chamber’s 430plus members. “We pride ourselves on knowing every member’s name and understanding their needs.”

For some of the directors, being a female leader in the world of business has been a challenge they’ve faced with grace. “I have learned to embrace my leadership style and not shy away from opportunities to lead,” said Grove, noting that she attributes her success to surrounding herself with strong female role models. “Confidence in yourself is key. We all belong at the table, so

As committed as they are to their Chambers, all of the women have managed to find a work-life balance. Meyers has been married for 45 years and loves spending time with her two children and five grandchildren. Zell is raising a family of three with her husband, and they enjoy hiking and attending Faith Bible Fellowship Church. Valudes is the married mother of twin daughters, serves as secretary for the Paradise Township Lions Club and helps with Girl Scouts. Grove and her husband enjoy spending time with their seven children and eight grandchildren, and Grove is active with the Rotary Club of Elizabethtown, where she will serve as president beginning in 2025. Ackerman and her husband are raising two children, and she describes herself as a “serial volunteer” with numerous organizations. Branle and her husband have three children, and the family loves to bike, travel and play “very competitive family football games.” Green and her husband are raising two children who are active in their high school’s marching band, and she joked that her favorite hobby is “networking.” Schmid has been married for 22 years, has three girls and loves to read, shop and explore local breweries.

As for advice for other female leaders, each woman referenced striking a balance between being assertive and being kind. “Work with integrity,” Zell stated. “Be willing to humble yourself. Be respectful of others in the workplace and the community.”

Ackerman advised that women should also be kind to themselves.

“Own your talents and always accept a compliment,” she remarked. “This is one of the hardest things to learn, but recognizing your strengths, especially when someone points them out to you, provides a confidence that will reach far beyond anything you can read in a book.”

And don’t underestimate what you can achieve, Schmid said, adding, “Never limit yourself. Find your passion and put your all into developing it so you can bring your best to the table.”

Going for gold with monarch butterflies

Alessia Archer knew she wanted to earn her Gold Award, the highest honor a Girl Scout can achieve, but she was stuck trying to come up with an idea for her project. Inspiration struck when she saw an ad in the Merchandiser for Milkweed 4 Monarchs, an Elizabethtown-based business that grows the essential food for monarch butterflies.

“I contacted Cindy Leonard of Milkweed 4 Monarchs, and I went to her farm, helped her with the milkweed she was growing, and she showed me how to make these mini greenhouses out of old milk jugs and iced tea jugs,” said Alessia, who is a senior at Donegal High School. “She gave me 200 milkweed seeds for free, and I spent the whole summer making these mini greenhouses.”

Alessia distributed the greenhouses at Marietta Day last May, as well as to friends and family through the summer and early fall of 2022. “When it got too cold outside, in September and October, I planned a little lesson plan for

day cares, and I had a craft for them to do as well,” she stated. “I went to five or six day cares in Elizabethtown, Columbia, Mount Joy and Hershey, and I gave the lesson and did a craft with the kids.”

The project was a natural fit for Alessia, who said she has loved monarchs since she was a child. “Monarch butterflies are my favorite butterfly,” she stated. “Ever since I was little, it’s been me and my grandmother’s thing to look for the monarchs.”

Her Gold Award project, which Alessia titled “Saving the Monarch Butterflies,” required a minimum of 80 hours to problem-solve, plan and implement. “I definitely learned good communication skills, being able to reach out and call the day cares or go and meet people to talk about my project,” she remarked, noting that she also contacted the Turkey Hill Experience in Columbia, which donated empty jugs for the project.

Alessia has been a Girl Scout for seven years and is a member of Troop 70595. “I’ve learned so much from Girl Scouts,” she said. “We do a lot

of things I had never done before and probably wouldn’t get a chance to do without Girl Scouts.” This past summer, her troop traveled to Colorado, where they went ziplining and whitewater rafting and rode horses. When she’s not busy with Girl Scouts, Alessia, who is the daughter of Deanna Musser of Marietta, is involved in a variety of clubs at school and was a member of the field hockey team.

Musser said she’s impressed with Alessia’s dedication to the project. “I’m very proud of her,” she said. “She worked really hard. … I also want to thank her troop leader, Julie Houck, and her two regular volunteers, Fran Richards and Sheila Fasig, who do an amazing job with the girls.”

Encouraging other girls to earn their Gold Award, Alessia said, “Even though it’s a lot of work and it feels difficult in the moment, the end is so rewarding, and all of the hard work pays off.”

Alessia will receive her Gold Award at a ceremony at Bucknell University on Sunday, June 11.

A “Leaders and Liberators” event will be held in Columbia on Saturday, March 11, from 3 to 6 p.m. The event will honor the life and legacy of Harriet Tubman in observance of the 110th anniversary of her death. Three influential leaders of the Underground Railroad will be portrayed at 3 p.m. in a performance at the Mount Zion African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church, 222 S. Fifth

St., Columbia. The performance tells the story of an imagined meeting on July 4, 1872, of Harriet Tubman, Stephen Smith and William Whipper, conductors and agents who led hundreds to freedom through the network of the Underground Railroad from the 1830s through the 1850s. Whipper and Smith were contemporaries of Tubman who built a successful lumber company in Columbia.

Canadochly students in grade three will be coming for the tour on Tuesday, April 4, and Wednesday, April 5. Teacher Jodi Winter will bring three classes totaling 60 students. The students’ proposed project will focus on recycling projects and reports.

Students from Wrightsville Elementary School will visit

on Tuesday, April 18. Teacher Lesa Uffelman will bring 54 second-graders from three classes. For their project, Wrightsville students will complete an art project designed to show what they learned on the trip.

On the tour, participants will get a firsthand look at the technologically advanced facil-

ity that uses trash as alternative fuel, Jones said. Tourgoers will take a walking tour of parts of the plant, stopping at the tip floor to see garbage trucks enter and unload garbage; the turbine generator room, where electricity is made; and a mock control room, where they will learn about the technology and pollution-control measures that are in place to ensure safe operation. “All tour participants must wear a hard hat and safety glasses on the walk-

ing part of the tour,” Jones remarked. “The hard hats are always a hit with the kids.”

Jones said each of the 72 municipalities in York County is contractually obligated to bring household trash to the YCSWA, and no tax dollars are used to operate the facility. “All revenue is generated from tip fees and the sale of electricity,” she explained. “At full capacity, this facility generates 40 megawatts of electricity every minute of every day - enough to power 20,000 homes.”

Event frompg 3

The event will feature Raquel Richardson portraying Tubman, Lenwood Sloane as Whipper and Nelson Polite Jr. as Smith; all three performers are experienced actors. The historically informed script was written by Lancaster historian Randolph Harris.
