Church Will Hold Lenten Fish Fry St. Peter’s Catholic Church, South Second and Union streets, Columbia, will begin its Lenten Friday Fish Fry on Friday, March 8, in the Parish Center.

The event is open to the public. Food will be available for eat-in or takeout every Friday from March 8 through April 12 from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Parking is available adjacent to the Parish Center.

Forty years ago, Joanne Haberstroh, Jane Mable and Kit Seibert came up with the idea to hold a Fish Fry every Friday during Lent. The event quickly became popular not only with parishioners but also with other community

members. The Fish Fry has been held annually for the past 40 years.

The menu has grown and changed, but it still features a variety of fish platters and other non-meat dishes prepared by the women of the parish with assistance from the men, who help serve and clean up each week. Included in the price of the fish platters are coleslaw, macaroni and cheese, a vegetable, french fries and coffee or tea.

Homemade soups, weekly specials, a la carte items and desserts are also available. Popular items include fish sandwiches and the baked haddock platter.

Dayspring To Host Noted Speakers Remember America Series To Continue

The leaders of Dayspring Christian Academy have tapped two individuals to give addresses during the ninth annual Remember America Speaker Series event, which is themed “Which Way, America? Choose You This Day” and will be held on Saturday, April 27. Fox News personality Shannon Bream and retiring U.S. Rep. Trey Gowdy will visit Lancaster and speak to the audience at the Lancaster County Convention Center, 25 S. Queen St., Lancaster.

Tree Seedling Sale Planned York County residents are invited to participate in the 45th annual York County Conservation District (YCCD) tree seedling sale on Thursday, April 11, at Rocky Ridge County Park, located off Mount Zion Road in York.

Each year, more than 20,000 seedlings are sold and planted in York County and surrounding areas. Featured this year will be numerous seedlings native to the area, as well as a variety of fruit-bearing shrubs and trees, such as apple and cherry trees. At the sale, one free blue spruce or white pine seedling will be handed out per person to attendees who bring the required coupon.

Will Russell, quartermaster of Boy Scout Troop 349 of Mountville, has intimate knowledge of all of the troop’s gear. For the past few years, it has been Will’s responsibility to inventory and inspect the tents, cooking pots, and other camping accoutrements owned by the troop.

“The water jugs are breaking down, and the coolers are cracked from where we dropped them,” Will reported.

The troop has slated those items for replacement, and proceeds from the group’s annual spaghetti dinner will make the purchases possible. Two years

“It’s quality gear because they camp in extreme conditions,” said troop committee chair Vanessa Reisig. “They camp (when the temperature is) in the teens.”

The spaghetti dinner will be held on Saturday, March 2, from 4 to 7 p.m. at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church (UMC), 100 W. Main St., Mountville. A snow date has been set for Saturday, March 23. The all-you-can-eat meal will include spaghetti and meatballs, tossed salad, garlic bread, and desserts. Gluten-free pasta will be available. Separate prices for admission have been set for adults and for children ages 3 to 10. Children under age 3 may eat free of charge. Troop members are preselling tickets, or admission may be paid at the door. Folks may also purchase meals to go; containers will be provided.

“It’s also a community outreach,” Reisig remarked. “We have families that come in and eat in large groups. It’s an inexpensive night out for families.”

The Scouts of Troop 349 often go on adventures together, whether spending a weekend camping in the woods, whitewater rafting, or volunteering around Mountville. Urban orienteering, where groups of three boys, accompanied by an adult, follow clues planted throughout New York City or Washington, D.C., is a highlight of the summer. The troop also visits the Naval Academy in Annapolis, where the boys camp out and watch a football game. Scouts have helped to clean the area

around Lake Grubb, appeared in Memorial Day parades, and volunteered at the Mountville Fire Company and Oak Leaf Manor North. “(The troop) is helping shape young boys and men,” Will commented. “You can use the skills you learn here for your future.”

“My oration is (on the topic that) capitalism is the best economic system; it rewards individualism,” Joey said. “I’m pretty nervous (about speaking to a large group of people). Why wouldn’t I be? This is God’s plan, (however). I’m delivering God’s message.”

“We thought they’d be a good match, as they’re part of two of the most influential institutions that affect American lives: the media and government,” said Dayspring headmaster Mike Myers. “They’ll answer questions like ‘What is God doing there (in those institutions)?’ and ‘What are the challenges?’”

Myers asserted that Bream and Gowdy have “strong Christian testimonies.” Attendees will be invited to submit questions for a question-and-answer session that will take place after the speakers’ presentations. Myers will serve as the facilitator, and Dayspring alumni Carley Evangelista Bilindabagabo, Class of 2009, and Matthew Valverde, Class of 2012, will assist in the dialogue.

“It’s important to show what Dayspring is about,” said Lisa Becker, the school’s marketing director. “Including alumni will show how they have learned to think and reason.”

The puns are practically unavoidable: Donegal Trout Unlimited (DTU) is fishing for support; DTU hopes to lure supporters to its annual banquet and auction; DTU members are hooked on cold water conservation. Puns or no puns, the work the group is doing is necessary to the health of Lancaster County’s streams and waterways, as well as larger bodies of water like the Susquehanna River and the Chesapeake Bay. “We’ve spent approximately $3.5 million in about seven years on stream restoration projects,” said Bob Kutz, co-chair of DTU’s conservation committee, board member, and fundraising committee member. “Through these projects, we’ve greatly reduced the sediment going into the Conowingo Pond.”

DTU is one of 53 chapters of Trout Unlimited in the state.

The chapter was started in 1967 with about a dozen members and was named for its original meeting location. Now, more than 750 people are members of DTU, and the organization holds board meetings at the Millport Conservancy in Lititz and general meetings at the Farm and Home Center in Lancaster.

The group first worked on restoring Donegal Springs and Donegal Creek, and its work has spread throughout the county.

The restoration completed on Lititz Run has become nationally known, said fundraising committee member Vicki Wilson. Currently, DTU has projects in process on Fishing Creek in southern Lancaster County. As a result of the group’s efforts, streambanks are holding their shape, water temperatures are dropping, and aquatic life is thriving.

“A buffer of 100 feet filters out all pollutants,” Kutz explained, adding that hardwood trees planted in riparian buffers even a few dozen feet wide make an impact on streambank stability. DTU maintains a nursery at the Millport Conservancy for use in future projects.

“We will have thousands of trees to plant (in buffers) in the next three or four years,” Kutz said.

“Even after all the flooding we had this year, the (creek banks) where we planted are still there.

The others are blown out,” fundraising committee chair Ruth Roulston reported.

The group is thankful to have received grants to cover the costs of its work. However, there are expenses involved in operating the chapter. Fundraising committee co-chair Barry Witmer noted that when new members join, a portion of their membership dues stays local, while the remainder goes to the national organization. Thereafter, the entirety of a member’s dues is paid directly to Trout Unlimited.

The budget includes facility rental fees, speakers’ fees, sponsorships for youths to attend conservation camps, training and supplies for the Trout in the Classroom program, tree nursery stock and planting supplies, printed materials, and costs associated with fundraising.

The annual banquet and auction is DTU’s largest fundraiser.

This year’s affair will be held on Saturday, March 16, from 4:30 to 8 p.m. at the DoubleTree Resort by

Hilton, 2400 Willow Street Pike, Lancaster. Hors d’oeuvres will be served, and the plated dinner will include a chicken entrée, salad, potatoes, vegetables, and dessert.

Live and silent auctions will be held throughout the evening. Trips to Montana, Spring Creek, and the Potomac River, as well as tuna fishing and skiing, will be up for bids along with golf passes, themed baskets, dinners at two private homes, fishing gear, jewelry, artwork, perfume, and items for infants and children. Witmer

will offer an apple pie for sale as well. Additionally, a collectible fly tied by Tom Herr in memory of soldiers killed in Afghanistan has been donated for the auction; the work is so intricate that it took 17 hours to complete.

Ballard discovered the RMS Titanic in 1985 and has since succeeded in locating numerous other significant shipwrecks, including the German battleship Bismarck, the lost fleet of Guadalcanal, the U.S. aircraft carrier Yorktown, and John F. The author of numerous books, scientific papers, and articles, he has been featured in several television programs, including “Secrets of the Titanic” and a fivepart mini-series, “Alien Deep With Bob Ballard.”

He served in the U.S. Navy for more than 30 years and continues to work with the Office of Naval Research. A pioneer in the development of deep-sea submersibles and remotely operated

vehicle systems, he has taken part in more than 155 deep-sea expeditions.

The association’s annual gathering traditionally brings together upwards of 800 business and community leaders for an evening of business networking, cuisine, and recognition of outstanding manufacturers from throughout the region for their contributions to business and the community during the previous year.

Bird Club Plans Field Trips The Lancaster County Bird Club (LCBC) will offer four field trips in March, three of which will be at Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area (MCWMA).

The public is invited free of charge. Preregistration is required no later than 6:30 p.m. on the day before the trip.

Pennsylvania’s annual high school wrestling pilgrimage is underway with the “Road to Hershey” kicking off for Eastern York on February 15th and 16th with a trip to Susquenita High School for the District 3-2A Sectional round. The Golden Knights sent their full 13-member squad to Susquenita with four working their way to a top six finish and a berth in the District 3-2A Championship in Hershey on February 22nd and 23rd.

Nathan Robbins put in the most work while earning his way onto the medal stand. The senior started his path to sixth place with a win over Kennard-Dale’s Darius Bailey, earing a spot in the quarterfinals by pinning Bailey at the 1:25 mark of their first-round match-up.

Upper Dauphin’s Darien Wiest ended Robbins’ shot at a 152-pound title with a second period pin sending Robbins into the consolation bracket. Once the ‘wrestle-back’ started Ribbons picked up his final two wins, securing his spot in the district championship with wins over Benny Garmin of Boiling Springs and East Pennsboro’s Matthew Hartman via 4-1 and 8-4 decisions, respectively. Trinity’s Daniel Kosinski dealt Robbins the first of back-to-back losses while Fairfield’s Aaron Shriner handed him the second with a 4-2 final in their battle to decide

fifth and sixth place.

Justin Manganello’s path to a sixthplace medal in the 138-pound bracket took him through just five matches starting with a first round loss to Kade Matter of Upper Dauphin that lasted 59 seconds.

Manganello rebounded with wins over Biglerville’s Gage Bishop and East Pennsboro’s Malachi Harvey by a combined 11-6 tally before a loss to Newport’s Mason Kauffman dropped him into the fifth-sixth place bout opposite a familiar foe in Matter. The result was the same, a Matter victory via pinfall, but Manganello was able to take the match into the second period the second time around before succumbing at the 2:36 mark.

Drake Brown rounded out the trio of sixth place finishers. Brown managed just one victory on his way to a medal but his three losses were to wrestlers that finished higher on the podium. That trend started with his quarterfinal loss to eventual gold medal winner Dominic Kelly of Trinity. Brown fell to Kelly in the first period but bounced back with a pinfall win of his own, stopping his bout with Biglerville’s Johnny Sanchez in the second period. Brown dropped his consolation semifinal to Susquenita’s Daniel Criley, who finished third, just after the start of the second period with a loss to Hunter Smith of James Buchanan, who finished fifth, ending Brown’s weekend.

Nicolas Hess was the final Golden Knight to work his way to the podium, earning a 285-pound fifth place medal thanks to his 5-2 win over Upper Dauphin’s Chase Witmer. Hess bookended his weekend with another win, this one via a 7-1 victory over Shaun Reed of James Buchanan in the quarterfinals. In between the two wins were losses to the eventual silver medalist, Jake Moyer of Fairfield, and the eventual bronze medalist, Maximus McMurray of Trinity.

The remaining Eastern York wrestlers had their season come to a close at Susquenita with four grapplers posting a 1-2 mark. Hailu Barrow was the first to bow out, earning his lone win over Halifax’s Zander Conrad in the first round of the 132-bracket. Losses to Upper Dauphin’s Zach Rupp and East Pennsboro’s Logan Kramer ended the junior’s season in the consolation round.

Austin Baker followed the same track as Barrow, posting a first round win over Antoni Esquivias (Biglerville) at 220pounds. A loss to Donny Gelnett of Upper Dauphin, the eventual silver medalist, ended Baker’s title shot while a loss to Bermudian Springs’ Blaine Worden ended his season.

Joining Barrow and Baker in the club were Isaac Buser (182) and Jonah Dougherty (145). Buser and Dougherty followed the same path by opening the

sectional round with losses. Buser dropped his first-round bout with Fairfield’s Dakota Mongan while Dougherty fell to Delone Catholic’s Tate Neiderer.

Both rebounded in their consolation round of eight match with Buser taking out East Pennsboro’s Evan Furlong while Dougherty topped Littlestown’s Jacob Yearly. Dougherty finished his weekend with a loss to Boiling Springs’ Eli Crum while Buser’s final bout was opposite Upper Dauphin’s Mason Wiest.

All five of Eastern York’s remaining wrestling were unable to find the win column, dropping two matches without a win. Devan Jackson of West Perry and Raif Barber of Boiling Springs ended Isaac Wherley’s time in the 106-pound bracket while Upper Dauphin’s Ethan Paul and James Buchanan’s Gavyn Stewart did the same for Eugene Courtright at 120.

Matthew Thomas was the next Golden Knight to drop his first two matches, falling to Andrew Stafford of Boiling Springs and Isaiah Buckley of Susquenita in the 126-pound bracket. The Horn Farm Center, 4945 Horn Road, York, will offer a Wild Lands Immersion - Primitive Skills Workshop Series in the spring. The Friends of Kreutz Creek Library Branch Support Group will meet on Wednesday, March 27, at 5:30 p.m. The group welcomes fresh ideas and suggestions for activities to be held throughout the year.

The Knitters and Crocheters group meets on the first and third Tuesdays of each month.

People of all skill levels are welcome, and group members will help others learn to knit or crochet. Attendees should bring needles and yarn. Knitters and crocheters may bring their current projects to work on and projects for show-and-tell. The group will meet from 6 to 7:45 p.m. on March 5 and 19.

Art teacher Beth Shook directed eight students from the Mount Joy school’s newly formed Janus Ambassadors club in hanging several framed pieces and arranging colorful papier-mache letters - spelling out “READ TODAY” - on two wall shelves. Two of the art pieces were created by club members.

The entire task took little more than half an hour. But it was another opportunity for these students to leave their campus, located on Lefever Road, and experience a different aspect of the Mount Joy community and, if needed, lend a helping hand.

The idea behind the club, formed in January, is to help students develop communication and leadership skills while becoming better acquainted with the town where their private day school is located.

“Our school is an independent school, sitting in the middle of the community, (but) we’re not hooked into the community in the same way a public school is,” stated club co-adviser Christine Koslosky, who teaches Spanish and language arts at Janus.

“The big idea is to have them being able to get out and interact with adults in the community and practice social skills,” said co-adviser Patrick Pressley, who teaches history and language arts.

The school, with a current enrollment of 63 pupils in grades one through 12, draws students from several surrounding counties. In fact, of the club’s eight student members - seven high-schoolers and one fifth-grader - only ninthgrader Zoe Soderblom is from Mount Joy. The others hail from Wrightsville, Hershey, Palmyra, Wyomissing, Lancaster and Shrewsbury.

One of the club’s outings was to the Mount Joy Chamber of Commerce, where the students learned about the western Lancaster County town. The school, which is a member of the Chamber, also ran a notice in the Chamber newsletter, describing the club and seeking hosts.

The club meets after school on Mondays and will be active into March, with plans to continue next school year.

In addition to the Chamber and Juniper Village, the club has visited the Milanof-Schock Library, where the students learned about using online databases and went on a treasure hunt. The students also were slated to return to Juniper Village for a sing-along with residents. Another excursion will be a visit to the Olde Square Inn, where they will get a lesson in etiquette.

Janus Ambassadors from pg 11 about Mount Joy,” said Madison Kauffman, a ninth-grader from Wyomissing. “It’s really helped show me a lot of the places in the community of Mount Joy.” “We believe firmly in our school that we need to get the kids out,” said Koslosky, who used to run a global studies program that saw students travel to Spain, Costa Rica and Italy. “If we can’t get them to Costa Rica, we should at least try to get them out in Mount Joy.” Koslosky noted that the club is valuable in that the students “understand that they have a connection to the community that goes beyond the doors of our school.”

So far, the club has gotten good reviews from the students.

“We’ve all learned ... to work together and to try to help the

community as much as we can,” said Emma Purvis, a 10th-grader from Wrightsville.

“It’s such an amazing time to make people so happy whenever we’re around them. And we just make their day and it makes me happy,” stated Colleen Klahr, a 10th-grader from Wyomissing.

It is especially gratifying for Zoe, who moved to Mount Joy a couple years ago.

“I love it. It’s awesome,” she said.

“I love going out into the community and helping people and getting to know other places, like Juniper.”
