Spotlight On Student Talent

Glatfelter Memorial Field Brick Entrance To Be Dedicated

If you grew up in Columbia, chances are you played a sport or attended a community event at Glatfelter Memorial Field. The memories of times spent at the field, located at 1249 Lancaster Ave., helped generate support for a gate restoration project that began in 2021. The Glatfelter Memorial Field Trust board of directors now seeks your help in completing the restoration, with donations sought for a plaque that will be unveiled at the entrance to the gate during a dedication ceremony on Sunday, June 4, at 2 p.m. Donations of $1,000 and over will be recognized on the plaque, which will stand to the left of the gate as visitors enter the park. The deadline for donations is Tuesday, Feb. 28. Robin Gamby, a member of the board of directors, emphasized See Glatfelter pg 4

In late January, students in Eastern York School District had the opportunity to showcase their talents on stage during a district-wide talent show held at Eastern York High School. “We had 16 acts, and we really had a little bit of everything,” said Lindsey Pangburn, president of the performing arts booster club, which hosted the event. “We had some singing, dancing, baton twirling, and someone read an original poem.”

A repeat performer demonstrated his unique ability to solve a Rubik’s Cube, Pangburn noted, and a local Girl Scout troop recited the Girl Scout Promise and sang the “Cookie Echo Song.”

“We had someone play the guitar,

and we had someone who played the ukulele and sang,” Pangburn commented. “It was a really nice show, and we had a great response from our audience. We had about 100 people in attendance, and when the kids did their curtain call, they got a standing ovation.”

Pangburn noted that students also worked behind the scenes with the show, operating lights and running the sound.

This is the third year for the talent show, which the booster club holds as a way to support students and promote its program. “We think it’s important for all the kids in the district to showcase their talents,”

Pangburn remarked, noting that performers included elementary school students, high school students and two students who are homeschooled but live in the district. “Our booster

club was looking for more ways to provide events and to encourage kids in the district to embrace their talents. We thought this was a good way to start.”

“It was a really nice show, and we had a great response from our audience. We had about 100 people in attendance, and when the kids did their curtain call, they got a standing ovation.”

Each performer was presented with a participation certificate, and students who have participated for more than one year were also acknowledged. One student,

Macy Hershberger, was recognized for performing in all three years of the show.

Along with the talent show, the performing arts program hosts a theater summer camp that began last year and will continue this coming summer. “We are just in the planning stages, but we are looking at dates in July for the camp,” Pangburn said. “It’s for kids in grades K through 12, and it’s a lot of fun. The kids make their own props and put together their own costumes, and then they perform for parents on Friday night at the end of the week.”

The performing arts booster club also supports Eastern York School District students who are participating in the spring musical. This year’s show is “Matilda the Musical,” and it will be performed from Thursday, March 16, through Saturday, March 18.

Columbia F.&A.M., Lodge No. 286, returned to Columbia late in 2022. Its activities are now housed in its newly constructed Lodge room in the Cimarron Building, 430 Walnut St., Columbia.

The Columbia Masons have been a part of the community since 1854 and previously were located on Locust Street prior to moving to Wrightsville Lodge for over 10 years. Scott Zeamer, past master and worshipful master for 2022, noted that the move to Wrightsville was always viewed as temporary, and the

group aimed to return to Columbia.

The Lodge has had a rejuvenation of membership within the past year, gaining more than 30 new members. The members of the Columbia Lodge seek to grow their fraternal bonds and their involvement within the community, with a focus on aiding children and youths.

The officers for the 2023 year are past master Jason A. Martin, worshipful master; Jared Hughes, senior deacon; Trenton Mann, junior deacon; past master Gerald Fretwell, senior warden; David Zeamer,

junior warden; Austin Peters, senior master of ceremonies; Keary Smith, junior master of ceremonies; Steven Henry Jr., secretary; Thomas Heisler III, treasurer; Serhat Cakmak, pursuivant; Brett Nease, tyler, and Raymond Groff, chaplain. Clair Knight, past master, serves as the Grand Lodge representative. The trustees are past masters Mark Zeamer, Scott Zeamer, and Andrew Zeamer.

Columbia Lodge will hold a

lodge dedication ceremony on Saturday, April 1, with Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania representatives and officers present. Organizers anticipate an attendance of over 300 people. More information is forthcoming.

For more information about the Columbia Lodge, email secretary Steven Henry Jr. at secy0286@pagrand lodge.org or search for “Columbia Masonic Lodge #286” on social media.

The presentation will provide an opportunity for attendees to learn about the mission and impact of the Y, the Y’s legacy society and the most common types of

planned gifts, along with their income and tax implications.

The presentation will be available virtually and in person at the York Branch YMCA, 90 N. Newberry St., York, and it will be recorded. To regiser, call 717812-0119, ext. 300, or email Joe Kirkenir at jkirkenir@rosesymca.org by Friday, Feb. 17.

Miller Named To State Organization

Heather Miller, chief education officer at the York Jewish Community Center (York JCC), was appointed to the Pennsylvania State Advisory Council (SAC) on Early Childhood Education and Care. The SAC was established to allow for collaborative conversations and work between the Office of Child Development and Early Learning (OCDEL), advocates, and providers. Miller is one of 30 members selected to serve as a representative of child care.

that the committee will happily accept donations of any size to support the project. To date, over 78% of the project is funded, she stated, explaining that although the gate is complete, money is still needed to cover the costs of the restoration.

The brick entrance to the park was

built in 1937 by the Glatfelter family in honor of Lt. Richard Glatfelter, a graduate of Columbia High School and the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. He died in a car accident during his first assignment at Fort Dix, N.J. His father, David L. Glatfelter, donated the land to memorialize

his son. The field was built by the Works Progress Administration during the Depression. At that time, in addition to the main gate, a grandstand was constructed, and the grading of a football field, a baseball field and tennis courts was completed. Landscaping on the grounds included dwarf maple trees and large sycamore trees, many of which still stand today. The property currently includes five baseball fields, a football field, tennis courts that have been converted into a street hockey rink, a track and a pavilion. Since the early 1960s, the field has also served as the home of CBAA.

Along with Gamby, members of the board include Bill Kloidt, Kevin Kraft, Carl Glatfelter and Andy Ohrel. Audrey Kuhn is the honorary chairperson of the fund drive. In addition to the fund drive for the plaque, the group will hold a Food Truck Extravaganza and Old-Fashioned Day on Saturday, May 6, at the field, as well as a golf outing in September. Both will be fundraisers for the project.

To make a donation or for more information about the restoration project, contact the board at Glatfelter MemorialField@gmail.com or call Kloidt at 717-201-5134.

The SAC aims to better serve young children and their families and expand access to quality child care, as well as support the early childhood education community. The SAC advises the administration in planning for the expansion of early learning and development services for young children and their families and makes recommendations to ensure the plans are implemented successfully.

Miller joined the JCC in 1993, where she began her career as a summer camp counselor. In 1995, she began working full time in an early childhood education classroom, where she expanded on her education and experience, eventually becoming the vice president of education. She took on the role of the chief education officer in 2019.

“Brighton Beach Memoirs”

Serves Up Nostalgia

“I would call this play a dramedy,” said Jonah McDonald, describing “Brighton Beach Memoirs.” “Parts are very funny, but parts are sad, too.” “Brighton Beach Memoirs” will be performed at Susquehanna Stage, 133 W. Market St., Marietta, from Friday, Feb. 17, through Sunday, Feb. 26.

“Brighton Beach Memoirs” was written by Neil Simon and tells the story of a Jewish family in 1930s New York. It’s told from the perspective of Eugene Jerome, a teen who narrates the play. “He’s anxious to get out and get on with his life, and he thinks he’s ready to do that,” said McDonald, who portrays Jerome.

Niki Boyer Swatski, who plays Jerome’s mother, Kate, said the show includes moments that will get audiences thinking. “A lot of heavy real-life issues come to the surface,” she explained. “It’s set in the 1930s, but the issues facing this family still ring true today.”

Lauri Lewis, who plays Eugene’s aunt, Blanche, agreed,

noting that audiences will be able to relate to the characters on stage. “Almost everyone in the audience is going to say, ‘I’ve had that fight before with my family members’ or ‘I’ve had that discussion,’” she stated, joking, “People will see this show and think, ‘My family isn’t so bad.’”

The play features of a cast of seven, four of whom are under the age of 18, noted director Michael Swanson. Rounding out the cast are Craig Copas, Elliot Evans, Carly Evans and Molly Weiler.

“Brighton Beach Memoirs” is an autobiographical story,

Ash Wednesday Service Planned

The Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church (UMC) and Water’s Edge UMC invite the public to their Ash Wednesday service on Wednesday, Feb. 22, in the sanctuary at Water’s Edge UMC, 471 Abels Road, Wrightsville. The service will begin at 7 p.m.

Pastor Terry Robinson will present the message, “A

Well-Watered Garden,” based on Isaiah 58:1-12. During the service, those wishing to participate may have a cross of ashes placed on their forehead as a symbol of their penitence. For more information, contact the church office at 717-246-2428 or seccnb@ netzero.net.

Swanson stated, adding that it’s the first in a trilogy of plays Simon wrote about his life. “It’s a depiction of Simon’s youth and members of his family, probably with a rosier glow than reality,” he remarked. “It’s a sort of idealized version of his family.” The show marks Swanson’s first time directing at Susquehanna Stage, although he has directed this play elsewhere.

Themes of the show include not only family but also the idea of striking out on your own, McDonald said. “I think audiences will leave the play pondering what they maybe took for granted in their lives,” he shared. “Jerome is eager to get away from his family, but then he realizes that his life is not the same without this group of people.”

“Brighton Beach Memoirs” will be performed at 7:30 p.m. on Fridays, Feb. 17 and 24; Saturdays, Feb. 18 and 25; and Thursday, Feb. 23. It will also be performed at 2 p.m. on Sundays, Feb. 19 and 26. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit https:// susquehannastage.com.

Every Wednesday at 6 p.m., local folk band Dillweed performs at Phantom Power, 121 W. Frederick St., Millersville. Due to the band’s unconventional blend of traditional folk and bluegrass music, audiences often refer to Dillweed’s members as “the punks of bluegrass.” The band may think outside the box, but its members have one main goal: to have a great time playing tunes.

Even Dillweed’s members are difficult to describe within a concrete role. The project consists of bassist Kim Weit and banjoists Eric Weit and Sean “Boney Fingers” Kelly, but each musician also serves as a vocalist and will often switch to a different instrument. When they are playing banjo, Eric and Sean each employ different styles; Eric plays traditional Appalachian banjo and Sean leans more toward bluegrass. “Those two types of musicians are never on stage at the same time, so it’s rare to have them performing together,” Kim

said. “It sounds funny to have two banjos and a bass, but it works. I round it out and hold everything together.”

Eric and Sean have been performing together for years, but Dillweed was first formed seven years ago. Kim heard Eric and Sean practicing together and thought of an idea for a bassline, so she picked up her son’s upright bass and started to play along. Although Kim had never

played bass or any other instrument before, the trio loved the new sound. Two weeks later, Dillweed had its first show, and it hasn’t stopped performing since. “I had to play that first show with duct tape on my fingers because they were raw. They weren’t used to playing the bass,” Kim recalled.

In addition to the band’s weekly performances at Phantom Power and monthly shows

at John Wright Restaurant in Wrightsville, Dillweed performs at a variety of other events. The trio has performed at weddings, churches, funerals, blues and folk festivals and everything in between. Sometimes Dillweed will even play three shows in the same day. “We’re the most hardworking band that no one’s ever heard of,” Kim said. “It’s always fun and exciting. It keeps us laughing.”

Dozens of the project’s fans, affectionately dubbed “Dillbillies,” flock to see the band perform, and Dillweed livestreams its Phantom Power performances on the band’s Facebook page. Dillbillies around the globe tune in to watch the show each week, and Dillweed often invites those who attend in person to share the stage with it. “It doesn’t matter what kind of group we play for; we’re having fun and people laugh and sing,” Kim said. “I grin like an idiot when I play because it’s such a blast.”

For more information, search for “Dillweed” on www.facebook.com.
