Fighting Food Insecurity With Power Packs

Food insecurity is a concern in the Eastern York School District, but help is on the way. The Power Packs Project, which delivers weekend meals to families, is coming to the district’s elementary schools in March.

It’s Fastnacht Time At Holy Trinity

Making fastnachts at Holy Trinity Catholic Church is an exact science. Sort of.

There are specific steps required in making the treats, but because each one is handmade, no two are alike, said Betty Mahan, a member of the fastnacht committee at the church.

“There is a correct way to roll the dough,” Mahan explained. “It’s not like rolling dough at home. You don’t flour the dough. You only flour the board and the pin. You don’t turn the dough over. You relax the dough by lifting if off the board.” The dough rises twice - once overnight before it’s rolled out and once after rolling - before the treats are fried. She noted that the resulting fastnacht is unique, adding, “I’ve never had any that taste like ours.”

Holy Trinity’s annual fastnacht sale will begin on Monday, Feb. 20. Sales will continue Tuesday, Feb. 21, and Wednesday, Feb. 22, followed by Mondays and Wednesdays through March 15.

The fastnacht sale started as a

project to raise funds to build a new church. While the current bake will produce more than 5,000 dozen fastnachts, the sale began as a small endeavor, noted volunteer Kathleen Lutz.

“It started out with only one or two days of sales,” said Lutz, who has been volunteering with the bake since the 1970s. While the original recipe is the same, she noted that some things have been tweaked. “We’ve found easier ways to do things over the years,” she said. “Everybody has good ideas. Some work and some don’t.”

The sale is still a fundraiser for the church, with proceeds used for parish projects and to support Our Lady of the Angels Catholic School.

Members of St. Peter Catholic Church in Columbia also assist with the sale, said St. Peter member George Overmeyer. “This is a ‘fun’ raiser more than a fundraiser,” he added. “We all have a lot of fun.”

Volunteers are needed to help with the bakes, with shifts available starting at 4 a.m. for people who want to help roll the dough. Experience is not

required, said volunteer Karen Sahd. “There’s always somebody around who knows the correct way to do things,” she commented.

Mahan noted that working at 4 a.m. is not required. “People can give an hour of time or help when they can,” she said. “We need second shift people and cleanup people, too.”

Fastnachts are available by the dozen, either glazed or plain. The committee members estimate that 75% of orders are for glazed treats.

“You don’t even need to look in the bag to know if they are glazed or not,” volunteer Jim Knapp said.

“It’s evident by the weight of the bag because we use so much glaze.”

Orders will be taken for fastnachts online only until sold out. To place an order, visit www.holy trinitycolumbiapa.com. Doors will open at 10 a.m. each day for pickup at the side entrance of the school, 404 Cherry St., Columbia. Orders not picked up by 1 p.m. will be resold on a first-come, first-served basis. To volunteer with the fastnacht bake, call the parish office at 717-684-2711.

CBAA Schedules Benefit Event

Make plans for a fun night out and support a local organization at the same time at a dance and auction to benefit CBAA. The event will be held on Saturday, Feb. 18, at Hambones Social Club, 10th and Manor streets in Columbia. The doors will open at 6 p.m., with the auction wrapping up at 7:30 p.m. and the dance running from 8 p.m. to midnight.

“We are the first school district in York to use Power Packs,” said Kimmy Nickle, pupil services specialist for the district. The Lancaster-based organization currently serves schools in Lancaster and Lebanon counties. Nickle had not heard of the project when she was approached by Tony Lewis, a member of Mount Pisgah Trinity United Methodist Church in York.

“He and his wife are very active in the church and very mission-oriented,” Nickle stated. “He had it on his heart to do this to benefit the kids who attend the schools in the district where the church is located.”

Lewis and a team of volunteers will handle collecting the meals at the church, delivering them to the elementary schools and distributing them to families. Nickle said Power Packs comes at the perfect time, because the district participated in a previous food donation program that ended, and the need is great in the district. “As we see more funding being cut for federal programs and just with the rise in food prices,

Marietta Will Hold Our Forest Volunteer Days

If you’ve enjoyed the beautiful trees along the Northwest River Trail in Marietta, you can now take an active role in helping to maintain that beauty. The Marietta Shade Tree Committee is

looking for volunteers to help with its new initiative, Our Forest Volunteer Days. Volunteers will be asked to cut English ivy and other invasive vines away from the base of trees along the trail.

“We’re holding one volunteer day per month, on the

last Saturday of the month through April, focused on cutting as best as we can and removing as much of the invasive and aggressive vines that have climbed their way to the top of the trees,” said Brandon Tennis, who is leading the project. Removing the vines will not only decrease the overall weight in the tree canopy, he stated, but will also decrease competition for resources such as sunlight that the trees face from the presence of the vines. “Right now, the vines are thriving while the trees are compensating,” Tennis remarked. “We want to flip that.” Volunteers will cut the vines at the base, so the vines at the top of the trees will die off, he noted. Sessions will be held on Saturdays, Feb. 25, March 25 and April 29, from 10 a.m. to noon. Volunteers should meet on the trail at the south end of Chestnut Street in Marietta.

The project is an initiative Tennis brought to the Shade Tree Committee. “We’re really fortunate that our borough has its own forest,” noted Tennis, who is a natural lands planning and management expert. “Everybody loves the trail, the Marietta section in particular, and it’s our responsibility to maintain the health of the forest that surrounds the trail. The health of the forest equates to the beauty of it.”

Tennis came up with the idea for the volunteer project after noticing the overgrowth of invasive plants while exploring the trail with his family. “We are on the trail every day,” he said. “Through my work, I can never simply enjoy a trail. I always have an eye on the issues. I had been concerned about the health of the borough’s floodplain forest, and species removal is almost always the first step in

habitat restoration.”

He noted that no experience is necessary to help with the vine removal, adding that he plans to bring his own children, who are 4 and 7 years old, to help. “Anybody can do this,” he remarked. “We are asking people who are able to bring their own tools, including hand pruners, loppers or a

pruning saw. I’ll be there to give instructions, but it’s pretty basic volunteer work. You need as many hands as possible to help with this.”

For more information on volunteering, contact Lillian Hill at 717-309-3309. Volunteers do not need to sign up but can just show up on the day of the activity.

Senior Commons Sets Support Group, Fundraiser

submit by

For the third year in a row, the Giant Company has announced the launch of its Feeding School Kids initiative and its $250,000 commitment to kick off the program. From now through Tuesday, Feb. 28, customers at Giant, Martin’s and Giant Heirloom Market stores are invited to round up their grocery purchases to the nearest dollar or convert their CHOICE points into a donation to support public school district food programs.

Giant launched the Feeding School Kids program in 2021 to address the issue of childhood hunger throughout local public school communities. Together with its customers, Giant has raised more than $4.8 million to date to help ensure no child goes hungry at school or at home.

Through the Feeding School Kids initiative, school districts have been able to support meal programs and address food insecurity through activities ranging from supplying backpacks with weekend food to clearing outstanding student lunch debt to building oncampus food pantries. School districts in Pennsylvania have benefited from the program.

Senior Commons at Powder Mill will offer a free and confidential Alzheimer’s caregivers support group on Thursday, Feb. 16, at 6 p.m.

Preserving and sharing memories can be therapeutic for caregivers and their loved ones with dementia. Attendees will learn how to create a memory page with Carolyn Brady-Beiler from Storytellers, who will lead them through the process during the hands-on workshop. Participants should bring their own photos; Senior Commons will supply all other materials.

All attendees must register by Friday, Feb. 10; call 717-741-0961 or email mpoole@powdermill.com to register.

Senior Commons at Powder Mill will also host a drive-up

chicken potpie dinner to benefit the American Heart Association. Curbside pickup will be on Tuesday, Feb. 21, from 4 to 6 p.m.

Each dinner will feature homemade Pennsylvania Dutch chicken potpie, coleslaw, a dinner roll and dessert. There will be a cost per person. Dinners must be preordered in advance.

To order a dinner, call 717741-0961 by Tuesday, Feb. 14. Cash or check payment will be due at pickup. Checks should be made payable to the American Heart Association. Those picking up dinners will be asked to drive up to the main entrance at 1775 Powder Mill Road in York with their name in the car window, and someone will bring their meals to them.

YCL Launches New Service

York County Libraries (YCL) has launched a new digital book service for readers, the Libby app by Overdrive, which replaced the Axis360 service. With a library card, members of the community will be able to borrow titles from YCL’s digital collection by downloading the Libby reading app or by visiting https://ycl.over drive.com/.

Libby will connect firsttime users and experienced readers with YCL’s digital collection. The locally selected collection offers e-books and audiobooks including bestsellers and new releases. Readers can select from subjects including mystery, romance, children’s, business, and more.

Cardholders can borrow up to five digital e-books and audiobooks at a time through

Power Packs

Libby and place up to 10 items on hold at a time. The checkout period is the reader’s choice of either seven or 14 days. The service is compatible with all major computers and devices, iPhone, iPad, Android phones and tablets, and Chromebook. Through Libby, readers can also “send to Kindle.” All titles will automatically expire at the end of the lending period, so there are no late fees. Readers can also download titles onto Libby for offline use.

Patrons can get helpful tips for using the new service by going to www.york libraries.org/eBooks, reading the YCL News blog, or attending one of OverDrive’s free Getting Started With Libby webinars via Zoom. For more information, contact questions@yorklibraries.org.

Women’s Group To Start Devotional Series

The Ladies’ Lunch Bunch of Reformation Lutheran Church will start a new devotional series on Tuesday, Feb. 14, called “The Foremothers of Jesus.”

The Ladies’ Lunch Bunch was formed in 2018 and meets on the second Tuesday of each month from 10 to 11:10 a.m. at the church, 2100 Manor Ridge Drive, Lancaster. Afterward, attendees are welcome to meet at a restaurant at 11:30 a.m. In February, the group will eat at Mission BBQ, 2002 Fruitville Pike, Lancaster.

Beginning with Eve from the Book of Genesis and end-

we know our families need this,” Nickle said. “Not having food to eat is a scary position for a kid to be in.” Power Packs provides families with a recipe and the ingredients to cook a nutritious meal each week.

Distribution of Power Packs will begin on Thursday, March 2, with boxes of food set to be given out every Thursday after school at the three Eastern York elementary schools - Kreutz Creek, Canadochly and Wrightsville. Mount Pisgah will make arrangements for evening pickup as well.

While Power Packs will initially be available only to elementary school families, Nickle noted that the district hopes to expand to the middle school and high school in the near future.

frompg 1

The success of Power Packs in Eastern York School District will depend on the number of volunteers the program receives, Nickle stated. “We are hoping to get lots of volunteers so that people can maybe help once a month and not have to do it every week unless they want to,” she said.

Families may register for Power Packs by signing up through a link that will be provided via district email, Nickle said. Anyone who lacks access to a computer or needs help enrolling in the program may make arrangements to use a district computer by contacting Nickle at 717-2521555, ext. 33231. Volunteers who are interested in helping with Power Packs may call Helen Lewis at Mount Pisgah Church at 717-252-4412.

New Make-A-Wish Fund Launched

Make-A-Wish Philadelphia, Delaware & Susquehanna Valley recently launched the Sapphire Fund. The Sapphire Fund will financially support the wishes of children with a cancer diagnosis in the Philadelphia, Delaware, and Susquehanna Valley region.

The largest number of wishes granted each year by the chapter are for children with a cancer diagnosis. On average, 60% of the wishes

granted each year will now be funded by the Sapphire Fund. Annually, $800,000 is needed to financially support these wishes. The name of the Sapphire Fund was inspired by the birthstone for the month of September, as September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.

To learn more about the Sapphire Fund, visit https://wish.org/philadesv/ sapphire-fund.

Operation HOPE recently recognized Fulton Bank, a subsidiary of Fulton Financial Corporation, for providing nearly $1 billion in loans to low- and moderateincome homebuyers over the past seven years.

The announcement was made by John Hope Bryant, founder, chairman and CEO of Operation HOPE, during Operation HOPE’s ninth annual HOPE Global Forums in Atlanta in December 2022. The event included nearly 5,000 delegates and attained more than 1 million views online. The HOPE Global Forum is dedicated to expanding financial inclusion for everyone.

In 2016, Fulton Bank began collaborating with Operation HOPE, a nonprofit focused on financial literacy and economic inclusion. Fulton Bank participates in the Closing Cost Assistance Program, which provides grants to buyers to help with the up-front costs of purchasing a home. Fulton also sponsors Operation HOPE financial wellness coaches in six cities throughout its footprint. The coaches provide free education to consumers, focusing on improving their credit and preparing them for the financial aspects of

home ownership.

Fulton Bank has helped facilitate more than $968 million in loans to more than 5,700 homebuyers under the Closing Cost Assistance Program, and that cumulative total is on track to hit $1 billion in loans in 2023. In addition to homebuyer loans, the bank has donated more than $8 million in grants to make purchasing a home more affordable for low and moderate-income buyers.

Beverages and snacks will be offered at the event, and DJ Stan D Man will provide music. The event will include a giveaway drawing of items grouped by baskets, said Crystal Aston of CBAA. “Baskets will be themed as much as possible to focus on the small businesses in our town,” she explained, noting that baskets will include a “townie basket,” a “man crate,” an entertainment basket, a Planet Fitness basket and more.

“We also have a weekend at a house in Ocean City, Maryland, to give away.”

Proceeds from the event will benefit CBAA, a nonprofit that is supported solely by donations, Aston said. Although the organization was intially called the Columbia Boys Athletic Association, it provides opportunities to both boys and girls.

“We provide the youth of Columbia with sports that include T-ball, softball, baseball, basketball, wrestling and cheerleading,” she stated. “We will not turn any child away

who wants to play a sport regardless of the family’s financial situation. We will find a way for that child to play the sport they want. Our goal is to provide our youth with an outlet to do what they are passionate about.”

She encourages anyone to get a ticket for the benefit auction and dance, noting that it’s always fun. “We would love for the town to get involved and come out for a fun night out for the parents of our youth,” she commented. “We always have an incredible time when we all get together.”

The deadline to purchase tickets for a discounted price is Wednesday, Feb. 15. Tickets will be available at the door for an additional fee. Only cash will be accepted at the event. GOTR Helps Girls Reach Developmental Finish Line

All phases of development are important. But it seems that the stage between the third and eighth grades may be especially critical in the growth of young women.

That’s where Girls on the Run (GOTR) steps in and helps girls put their collective best foot forward. GOTR’s mission is to help adolescent females become more social, more confident and more emotionally aware.

“We address the whole girl,” said Jennifer West, program director for GOTR of Lancaster. “Girls are facing so many critical decisions at this stage. We help girls with friendships, resolving conflicts, reaching goals, overcoming obstacles and asking for advice.”

“We hear girls say, ‘I’m not good enough. I’m not tall enough. I’m not smart enough,’” continued West. “We tell them, ‘No, you want to be yourself.’ We help girls find their star power. We help girls make good choices.”

West emphasized that GOTR is more than simply a running program, but an afterschool, community program. “You can hop, jump and skip, as long as you’re moving forward,” she said.

GOTR of Lancaster conducts two 90-minute meetings each week for 10 weeks, during both the spring and fall seasons. Registration for the spring 2023 season will begin Wednesday, Feb. 15.

Meetings are conducted by volunteer coaches in every school district in Lancaster and Lebanon counties, as well as at churches and social organizations like the YMCA. Last spring, GOTR served 960 local residents, and in the fall, the program’s participants numbered around 560. This spring, GOTR of Lancaster is shooting for 1,100 participants, 80 teams and 450 volunteer coaches.

“We’re really dependent on finding people with love for Girls on the Run,” said West. GOTR’s program separates its girls into two groups by age.

The course focuses on participants learning about themselves first, then learning about cooperation and finally learning about their communities.

This year’s spring GOTR program will be capped on Saturday, May 20, at Franklin & Marshall College with its annual 5K run, which is expected to draw 3,000 participants, running buddies, coaches and spectators.

“We started out with 25 girls and two teams,” said West. “It’s 14 years later, and we feel like Girls on the Run has become a household name.”

Lancaster is one of 200 councils of the international GOTR program. In 2017,

GOTR of Lancaster incorporated Lebanon County as part of its reach.

Since its inception, GOTR of Lancaster has served nearly 19,000 participants.

“Now we have girls who have graduated from college coming back and they’re like a bridge to the older people,” said West. “We’re a lot more

sure of ourselves. We know it’s successful. We know it’s impactful. We know it’s making a difference in people’s lives.”

To register for GOTR’s spring session, visit www.gotr lancaster.org, email jwest@ gotrlancaster.org or call 717869-5655. There is a fee to register, based on income.
