Poppy To Deliver Pre-Groundhog Day Prognostication

Meet Poppy, the newest local Groundhog Day prognosticator and arguably the cutest. Poppy, a groundhog from the Raven Ridge Wildlife Center, will be visiting Columbia Crossing, 41 Walnut St., Columbia, on Saturday, Feb. 1, from 1 to 3:30 p.m. for some preGroundhog Day festivities that the public is invited to join in. There is a per-person admission fee, but children age 4 and younger will be admitted free of charge. All proceeds will benefit Raven Ridge Wildlife Center located in Washington Boro.

Poppy and her handler, Betsy Shank, will offer a brief presentation on groundhogs, including some trivia on Groundhog Day. A Conestoga family discovered Poppy alone at approximately 4 weeks of age in May 2019 and transported her to Raven Ridge Wildlife Center. “When she was found, she was too small to be out of the den,” noted licensed wildlife

rehabilitator and Raven Ridge director Tracie Young.

As Poppy was being cared for and acclimating to outdoor life at Raven Ridge, she began to show problems with her teeth. Veterinarians eventually determined she had maloccluded - or crooked - teeth that were not growing in properly, which would mean she could not survive on her own in the wild. “A lot of times mother nature and animals know things like that, so that’s probably why (Poppy’s) mother abandoned her,” Young explained.

Poppy’s incisors were surgically removed, and she became trained and fully permitted by the Pennsylvania Game Commission and United States Department of Agriculture as an educational ambassador at Raven Ridge. Over time, Poppy bonded tightly with Shank, who is a Raven Ridge team leader. “Betsy takes care of Poppy and has the body language of Poppy down. So if we are ever at an event and Poppy is stressing, she’ll notice and know what to do,” Young said.

Japanese Drum Group Plans Performance The Arts at Millersville will welcome Yamato: The Drummers of Japan and its show “Jhonetsu - Passion!” to the Winter Visual & Performing Arts Center on Thursday, Feb. 6, at 7:30 p.m.

The Winter Center is located at 60 W. Cottage Ave., Millersville, on the Millersville University campus.

Yamato is composed of dozens of performers who travel around the

world with approximately 40 of Japan’s traditional Taiko drums. The group is in its 26th season, celebrating more than 4,000 performances in 54 countries and reaching nearly 8 million people. youth programs in England in the early ’70s, Rooney visited Northern Ireland at the height of The Troubles to help develop similar youth programs there. He completed his undergraduate studies at St. Mary’s College in London, studied philosophy at Catholic University of America, earned a master’s degree in counseling from Shippensburg University and completed his Lutheran studies at Gettysburg Seminary. He has been married to Sally for 40 years, and they have two grown children and two grandchildren.

Rooney retired in February 2012, having served as the senior pastor of historic Christ Lutheran Church in York. He has worked extensively in the human services field, including serving as special assistant in the Department of Welfare and as president and CEO of a large nonprofit entity serving the mentally ill and the developmentally disabled. For almost five years, he also served as the interim executive

He has served as a member and chair of the City of York General Authority. He is currently chair of the York County History Center and a member of the board of the Farm and Natural Lands Trust. He has also served on the Candidacy Committee for the Lower Susquehanna Synod as well as the Ecumenical Affairs committee and the Worship Committee. He is the author of several published sermons for three different groups.

Rooney is a founding member of the Society of the Holy Trinity (STS), a Lutheran order and ministerium, which now numbers almost 300 pastors in the United States and Canada. He served as dean of the local chapter for 12 years and as general secretary for three years and in September 2015 was elected senior (general superior) of STS. He has taught widely across the U.S. and Canada at all 23 STS chapters.

gram at Penn State York and at several retreats throughout the U.S. and Canada.

In his retirement, Rooney is an active member of the Rotary Club of York, and he served as president in 2016-17 club year.

In Rotary District 7390, he served as team leader for the Group Vocational Study Exchange team to Argentina in 2013. He completed all three levels of Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI) and now serves as RLI faculty and as faculty at training for MidAtlantic presidents-elect. He was named RLI Faculty of the Year in 2019. Rooney is a major donor to the Rotary Foundation and a member of the Paul Harris Society. He has received the York Club’s President’s Certificate of Appreciation for Service Above Self and the Avenues of Service Citation. He currently serves as district governor for District 7390.

Life event, Hempfield recCenter will offer a Triathlon Preparation Class for people age 13 and up. Sports performance coach Dan Cless and veteran triathlete Joe Ruiz will coach participants in strength training and performance skills to assist people of all levels, from those new to triathlons to elite Ironman athletes. The 12-session class will run from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Mondays, Feb. 3 to April 20. Separate fees have been set for rec center members and for nonmembers.

In addition to TRI for Life, Hempfield recCenter will offer the 2020 Youth TRI for Fun, a noncompetitive event for children ages 7 to 12. It will take place on Saturday, May 2, at 5 p.m. Children may participate in the following age groups: ages 7 and 8, ages 9 and 10, and ages 11 and 12. Each group will complete the course with varying distances for each leg. Each participant

Hempfield recCenter, 950 Church St., Landisville, will hold the 2020 TRI for Life sprint triathlon on Sunday, May 3, at 8 a.m. The annual event features a 300meter indoor swim, a 16-mile bike ride on rural roads with rolling hills, and a 3-mile run on a relatively flat course. The top male and female finishers will receive cash prizes. Awards will be given to the top three age group finishers and top three relay finishers. All participants will receive a tech shirt.

Discounted entry fees per individual and per relay team will be available to those who register through Tuesday, March 31. MDA To Hold Benefit Ball More than 100 York-area business, community leaders and residents will raise money to fight muscular dystrophy, ALS and related diseases at the 1st Capital Leather and Lace Ball on Saturday, Feb. 8, to benefit the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) Mid-Atlantic Region. It will be held at Wyndham Garden in York from 5:30 to 10 p.m.

Guests will enjoy live and silent auctions, food, and live entertainment, all while raising funds and awareness to help those with lifethreatening muscle-debilitating diseases live longer and grow stronger. Since 2017, the ball has helped support more than 600 individuals and families throughout the York area.

Visitors to Columbia Crossing will be able to take photos with Poppy; however, they will not be permitted to touch the groundhog. Poppy will make her first prognostication, and people will be able to vote for whether or not they predict six more weeks of winter or an early spring.

A groundhog pelt, skeleton parts, replica scat, and footprints will be on display for those interested in learning more about groundhogs up close. Groundhogthemed coloring pages will be available

for children, and stuffed groundhog toys will be available to purchase - with proceeds going to Raven Ridge Wildlife Center to support its continued efforts in rehabilitating native wildlife in Lancaster and York counties.

KDC: Cooperative Solutions has been offered an opportunity to share office space with one of its founding member nonprofit organizations in its new office space in Harrisburg.

Pennsylvania Association Sustainable Agriculture (PASA), just relocated to 1007 N. Front St., Suite 3S, Harrisburg. The space includes one large private office, a shared kitchen and three bathrooms, shared use of a conference room and plenty of parking spaces on the riverfront property.

In conversations preceding the move, KDC executive director Peggy Fogarty and PASA executive director Hannah SmithBrubaker explored multiple ways the KDC and PASA could find efficiencies by working together more intentionally. SmithBrubaker served as KDC’s board president in 2015-16.

KDC plans to host its board meetings at the new space and have more in-person time with its members, board members, and other partners. KDC can start moving Saturday, Feb. 1, and plans to be fully out of the Ephrata office by Sunday, March 1. KDC’s mailing address will remain 108F N. Reading Road, Suite 200, Ephrata, for now.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL The Tide stays high for the boy’s basketball team as they have their eyes on the section championship which has been a goal since the end of last season.

I think we are just playing as a team and our chemistry has really improved over the year,” Michael Poole said about the Tide’s season so far. “I think as a team everyone knows what is at stake but we are trying to take it one game at a time.”

The boys did just that as they continue to take care of business, picking up a pair of crucial league wins last week and keeping their unbeaten section streak alive. They started off the week

with a 45-13 advantage. The boys scored just 11 points the rest of the game but it did not seem to matter.

Poole and Glover poured in 13 points to lead the way with Poole hit three triples. McCleary scored a ten points and Cruz and Smith combined for 15 points.

Daezjon Giles (3) and Redding (2) rounded out the scoring. Ryan Hinkle, Matt Gambler, Noe Moreta, Argenis De Los Santos, David Graham, and Daniel Moreta got playing time as the coaches used everyone on the roster.

This week the Tide outscored their opponents by a whopping 33 points bringing their points per game total to just over 61 while they hold their opponents to just about 53 points a game.

Poole is still leading the way, averaging just over 15 points per game. Glover and McCleary are both averaging double digits as well.

Columbia is 12-5 overall while boasting an impressive league record of 8-0. They are one game up on Lancaster Mennonite whose only loss is at the hands of the Tide. Their second round matchup is slated for February 4 as the section title looms in the balance.

“The last games are very important to get us on a roll and in a rhythm for districts and league playoffs,” Poole said about his final stretch of the year.

The team goal this year is to hang banners starting with the section championship and then hopefully a district championship Poole reiterated.

WRESTLING The Tide wrestling team got back on the mats this week as they traveled to Elco for a league match.

Columbia is currently 0-5 on the year but does have a depleted team.

Next the Tide welcomed Lebanon Catholic to Columbia. It was not a very warm welcoming though as they dismantled them 56-34.

All games are important, especially this time of year as the playoffs are quickly approaching, but league games carry more weight. The Tide traveled to Lebanon Catholic for a section showdown but came out on the short end of a 46-35 loss.

Frazier and Bigler both netted ten points for the Tide. Burke added eight while Hardy and Tucker scored four and three respectively.

Burke and Frazier are practically averaging identical scoring numbers, just above 11.5 points per game.

The Golden Knights experienced one of their eight losses on January 21st thanks to a visit from undefeated Gettysburg. The Warriors used Quadir Copeland’s 26 points and Mike Hankey’s 23 points to leave town with a 66-52 victory.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL There is never a good time but late January is definitely not when you want to see your favorite high school basketball team nearly doubling their loss total but that is what happened to Eastern York’s girls’ team during a recent three game stretch. Setbacks handed out

by York Suburban and Gettysburg were sandwiched around a win over Kennard-Dale that dropped Eastern from 12-3 to 13-5 overall and from 5-2 to 6-4 in YAIAA Division II play.

The Lady Golden Knights are still comfortably in the District 3-4A field but are sitting on the bubble of the YAIAA tournament with just four games remaining in the regular season.

That first setback came on January 15th to York Suburban where a 50-47 overtime loss snapped Eastern’s five game winning streak.

Things were looking good as a 10-1 run through the second quarter turned a one-point cushion into a 10-point lead at intermission for Eastern York.

“I felt like we were in pretty good shape,” said head coach Brad Weaver. “Then they switched defenses and we stopped rebounding, Mara (Weaver) fouled out, and we had an opportunity to win the

game. It certainly wasn’t our best offensive game. We missed a lot of layups. Then it went to overtime and we lost control of the game.”

Those changes allowed the Lady Trojans to trim Eastern York’s 21-11 halftime lead to 31-23 heading into the final eight minutes of regulation.

That setup Suburban’s final push which resulted in an 18-10 edge in the frame, knotting things up at 4141 and sending the game to an extra session. As Weaver mention, the Lady Trojans controlled the overtime period to steal the three-point win.

Breana Grim netted all six Eastern points in overtime to finish with 11 while Mara Weaver collected a team high 13 points before fouling out. Victoria Zerbe (seven points), Lily Campbell (six points), Addy Malone (six points) and Abigail Henise (four points) were responsible for the remaining Lady Golden Knights offense.

The second setback in the stretch came on January 21st with a trip to Gettysburg that resulted in a 41-33 loss. “They are good and they have a really good point guard, Ann Bair, she handled us last night,” was Weaver’s simple summation of the loss.

With Bair registering a game high 20 points to lead the way, the Lady Warriors managed to outscore Eastern York in three of the four quarters, handing the Lady Golden Knights their fifth loss of the season. The lone quarter to go Eastern’s way was the third where Malone scored all of her team’s points and accounted for 12 of her team high 16 points in the process. Only three other Lady Golden Knights cracked the scoring column led by Grim with seven points. Campbell added six points and Henise four points to round out the scoring.

Stuck in the middle of the two frustrating losses was a 52-17 shellacking of Kennard-Dale on January 17th. “I think part of that was Wednesday’s night frustration,” said Weaver, “not getting that win on the road, they

came back really focused Friday night and played a great game against Kennard-Dale.”

Eastern York held the Lady Rams to single digit scoring in all four quarters while outscoring KD by at least eight points in each frame.

That started with a 16-6 edge to kick off the game and carried over to a 10-2 run in the second stanza.

The 18-point halftime lead ballooned to 26 points after a 12-4 third quarter and settled at 35 points with Eastern’s 14-5 edge over the final eight minutes. Malone, with 18 points, and Grim, with 14, were the only two players to crack double digits.

WRESTLING The Eastern York wrestling team hit a stretch of rough road with losses to York Suburban and Susquehannock dropping the Golden Knights to 7-8 overall and 2-3 in YAIAA matches.

“It was a tough week against two tough opponents,” said head coach Dan Garner.

It wasn’t a total washout for the Golden Knights with Garner mentioning the work of Austin Baker and Kaleb Crean as highlights in the losses. The duo accounted for two of the three Eastern York wins in the 62-13 setback to Suburban that took place January 14th. Baker pinned Brock Ahrens just past the three-minute mark of the 220pound battle, knotting the team score at 6-6. Eight straight Trojans wins followed before Crean was able to stop the onslaught with a last second major decision win over Dakata Shue at 152. With Suburban on top 50-6, the team outcome was already decided but the 12-2 major decision did shrink the gap down a bit. York Suburban claimed two of the final three matches to set the 62-13 final with Neijon Gonzalez managing a slim 3-2 win over Collin See Eastern pg 6

Baker and Crean accounted for half of Eastern York’s four wins with Baker collecting the first for a second straight match. Baker’s pinfall win at 285 came at the same 3:03 mark of his match but this time in the fifth bout of the evening leaving Eastern trailing 21-6. A no contest at 106 led into Eastern’s second win, this one by forfeit at 113. Hunter Eveler was the beneficiary of that easy win but Eastern York gave the six team points right back with a forfeit of their own at 120.

That forfeit kickstarted a small Susquehannock run that pushed the lead to 33-12 before Hailu Barrow was able to break it up by clipping Avichai Engel, 4-3, in their 138-pound Staff photo tangle. 35th Annual Heart Ball Planned The American Heart Association will host the 35th annual Lancaster Heart Ball. The gala will kick off American Heart Month on Saturday, Feb. 1, at 5:30 p.m. at the Lancaster Country Club, 1466 New Holland Pike, Lancaster. The theme will be “The Heart of the Forest.”

The event will honor young congenital heart disease survivor Shiloh Moran of Mount Joy. Shiloh was only a few weeks old

when she underwent open heart surgery to correct four congenital heart defects. Children born with critical congenital heart defects like Shiloh’s have a much greater chance to enjoy a long and healthy life than they could only a few decades ago thanks to the advanced detection and surgical interventions available today. Shiloh’s parents, Austin and Addie Moran, will share their story as part of the annual Open Your Heart appeal.

The Lancaster Heart Ball will also include silent and live auctions, a special performance by American Music Theatre developed exclusively for the Heart Ball, dinner, musical entertainment and dancing. Funds raised will support the American Heart Association’s mission to be a force for a world of longer, healthier lives through community education, public policy advocacy, health care quality improvement and investment in research.

The Lancaster Heart Ball, scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 1, will include a live auction. The event will take place at the Lancaster Country Club.

Preschool Will Host Open House Kindergarten readiness is the priority for the 4-year-olds who meet on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Students gain a basic understanding of core content areas, and both morning and afternoon classes are held.

The prekindergarten program is designed to meet the needs of students who do not meet the age eligibility requirements for kindergarten, who would benefit from an additional year of preschool, or whose families are looking for a more intensive five-day program. Peace Corps Volunteer To Speak At Church Mount Zion Lutheran Church, 2164 Mount Zion Road, York, will hear from a volunteer who recently completed a Peace Corps mission in the Dominican Republic.

Sean Mann, 25, will discuss his experiences in the Peace Corps on Sunday, Feb. 2, at both the 8 and 10:30 a.m. services.

Mann, a member of the church’s congregation, is the son of Dr. Scott Mann and Bonnie DeBold. He is a graduate of Juniata College and Dallastown High School. Mann spent two years working in the Dominican Republic, where the poverty level is among the lowest in the Caribbean.

The Peace Corps’ mission in the Dominican Republic includes community economic development, education and youth development. All participating volunteers must first undergo a period of training incountry before being sent into the general population.
