Central York High School senior Caden McKinney and his dad, Mark McKinney, both enjoyed classes they have taken at the Horn Farm Center for Agricultural Education, 4945 Horn Road, York. So when it came time for Caden to think of something to do for his Eagle Scout Project, they decided that asking the staff members at the Horn Farm for suggestions seemed like a good idea - and it was. In 2009, Ben Dannels of Troop 49 constructed an observation deck overlooking the Horn Farm as his Eagle Scout Project. Horn Farm staff members suggested that perhaps Caden could convert the observation deck into an outdoor classroom.

Military Leader To Speak At Event Robert O’Neill, a former leader in Naval Special Warfare Development Group, also known as SEAL Team Six, will be the guest and keynote speaker on Wednesday, May 20, for The
MERCHANT MARINES
The World War II Oral History Club will meet on Tuesday, Jan. 28, at 7 p.m. at St. Anne’s Retirement Community, 3952 Columbia Ave., Columbia. Speakers will include Bill Balabanow and Bill Kelly, who both served in the Merchant Marines during World War II. The club meets on the last Tuesday of each month, except December. Call 717-319-3430.
Caden designed the project and raised funds to pay for the materials needed. His primary method of fundraising was directly soliciting donations from friends and family. He began work in October 2019, first ripping off the old railings and power washing the old deck. With assistance from his dad, Caden built supports on the side of the deck as well as a metal roof. He built three benches inside the structure, which has capacity for 15 people. One minor hiccup arose when it turned out that the roof did not quite cover the benches as hoped, so Caden decided to add roof extensions to ensure the benches were sheltered from rain. “The whole intent is to have it as a place for classes to go for shelter from the weather,” explained Mark.
