not rich, but I’m rich in love,” said Dawn Boll, who owns Lucy’s Laundry in Hellam with her husband, Joe. “If I can share something with others, I will share it.” With that philosophy in mind, the couple set up a “giving table” in the laundromat, located at the rear of 2 W. Market St, Hellam, in December. They encouraged people to donate items for others to give as Christmas gifts, and the project took off from there.

“This is a very giving community and a loving community,” Dawn said. “It’s been a huge hit.”

Dawn got the idea for the table, which has since expanded to several shelves, after a friend gave her an

item to donate at a local giveaway drawing. “My husband said, ‘Why don’t we give it away at Lucy’s?’”

Dawn recalled. “We set up a table and invited people from the community to give and take items.”

Throughout the month of December, community members donated games, new toys, dolls and other gifts for children, as well as household goods, paper products and supplies for pets.

Lucy’s Laundry is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week year-round, so it’s easy for people to come in to donate an item or pick up something. “It’s amazing to see all the people who come in,” Dawn shared.

“Moms come in and bring their kid to pick up a gift, or they bring their kid to donate a gift. There have

been people in here every day. If they’re not dropping items off, they’re taking an item. I had somebody come in on Christmas Eve at 10 p.m. and get something off the table.”

She emphasized that the table is for everyone, and she’s been happily surprised that people have only taken what they needed. “This is a no-judgment zone. If you need something, you can come and get it,” she remarked. “I’ve never had anyone come in and take it all. It’s been beautiful.”

Although she planned to keep the giving station up only through the holidays, it was so well received, Dawn hopes to continue it indefinitely. “I’ve had numerous people say, ‘You have to keep this going,’”

she commented, noting that she plans to do specific drives geared toward holidays like Easter while continuing to offer necessities throughout the year. “I will have it set up for paper products - toilet paper, paper towels, tissues - anything you can’t purchase with food stamps.”

Not only does she hope people will come in for what they need, but she also encourages donations. “If you can donate, pick up something like a bottle of dish detergent. It’s not super expensive, but it can really help somebody,” she said. “There is a real need in our community, and there are also so many generous people in our community. We love this community, and we love helping people.”

When Keith Cotton, director of outreach with Servants Inc., looks for volunteers, carpentry, HVAC, and plumbing skills are not necessarily a requirement. “Physical (home) repairs are important, but we also put an emphasis on building relationships,” said Cotton of Servants Inc., an organization that performs home repairs and construction for those in need.

“I think one of the things a lot of our clients are facing, in addition to the physical hardship of needing home repairs, is loneliness,” Cotton pointed out, adding that many clients are widowed people or single mothers. “(They are) people who need support in general,” said Cotton. “For that reason, the organization’s volunteer application asks candidates to rate their skill levels, but Cotton commented that this is not meant to exclude anyone. “It just gives us a better idea where

we can plug people in, so they can feel useful,” he explained.

The application helps Servants Inc. put teams together and pair willing learners with those who have the ability to teach. There’s a need for skilled workers as well. “We have some intense projects that involve plumbing and framing,” Cotton said.

Servants Inc., which now has a full-time project manager in Lancaster County, is mostly active in the ELANCO area as well as Columbia and Marietta. During the week, Thursday is the designated volunteer workday, but Saturdays are scheduled to accommodate working volunteers and students. Right now, volunteers are needed as the organization’s client list is growing. “It’s a delicate balance,” said Cotton of expanding the client and volunteer lists at the same time.

Since opening a Lancaster County branch, a few years ago, the nonprofit has formed a partnership with CrossNet Ministries in New Holland. “(CrossNet) does intake applications … for the services we provide,” said Cotton.

Marilyn Guzmán, social services program manager with CrossNet, reported that one family feared losing its home due the building’s condition.

“We prayed, and God sent us a miracle in the form of men and women who work with and volunteer with Servants,” family members told Guzmán, noting that the volunteers were kind and understanding. “Just knowing we now have a safe home helps us sleep better at night, they told her.

Servants Inc. has also partnered with ELANCO Connect, which includes several greater Bowmansville area churches. Servants Inc. is hoping to provide a local half-week work camp experience during the summer months. The organization has also become involved in the Pequea Valley School District First Choice Discovery Program, a workbased program offering career exploration and mentoring to every sophomore, to introduce students to developing home repair skills.

The organization, which has branches in York and Adams counties, completed more than 110 projects and had more than 10,000 volunteer hours total in 2022. Servants Inc. also sends recovery teams to areas of the U.S. hit by disasters as well as organizing international missions teams.

Servants Inc. is in need of volunteers who know how to build ramps as well as those who can build relationships.

Alisa Sholly, who has participated in No Longer Alone Ministries family support group meetings for about a decade is grateful for the experience. “As the name says, I no longer feel alone in knowing how to deal with mental health concerns involving loved ones,” said Sholly. “I receive valuable information on mental health topics, a listening ear from others that can understand, and prayer.”

Michele Sipel, director of InHome Services with Landis at Home a division of Landis Communities, is well attuned

with the mission of the support group, which meets monthly at Landis Homes. Sipel serves as a liaison for the group, which provides a safe place to open up for those who have a loved one living with mental illness. “It’s a different world, and unless you live it, you don’t know (what it’s like),” said Sipel. “It’s one of those subjects where there’s a lot of stigma, but it is so important.”

Meetings are held on the fourth Sunday of each month. The next support group meeting will be held via Zoom on Sunday, Jan. 22, from 3 to 5 p.m. The January meeting will include a video by Dr.

Matthew Stanford, PhD, followed by discussion.

The support group was an offshoot of No Longer Alone Ministries (NLAM), which functioned in Lancaster from 1991 to 2019. When NLAM closed its doors, a peer support group and the family support group overseen by the ministries were transferred to local entities. The peer support group, called Paths to Discovery, became part of Faith Friendship Ministries, and the family support group transferred to Landis, where several of the founding members live.

Landis offered personnel with the necessary expertise to help organize the group as well. Sipel noted that Evon Bergey, vice president of community initiatives with Landis Homes, is from a behavioral health background and added that she and other organizers work with Bob Musser, a licensed social worker who worked with NLAM, to plan meetings, line up speakers, and facilitate meetings. The group began meeting at Landis Homes in January of 2020. After the advent of COVID-19 restrictions, the group met virtually. In 2023, January, February, and March meetings will be held via Zoom so that inclement weather will not be a deterrent. The group plans to meet virtually once each quarter so that those who cannot come to Landis Homes may attend.

Among the past topics that were covered at meetings are innovations in treatment, anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder, overcoming grief, mental health and the Bible, and bringing healing to senior care.

Sipel said the group provides an atmosphere of caring and acceptance. “You get to know each other, so people feel comfortable being vulnerable. It is very therapeutic to be able to speak about what you’re going through with others who have lived it and understand.”

Sholly noted that NLAM has provided her with optimism. “It is a place to find hope when things seem hopeless,” she said. “I encourage anyone who is struggling or knows someone that is struggling with mental health issues to attend. It has been a Godsend for me and my family.”

To register for the January Zoom meeting, contact 717381-3599 or jalbright@landis.org by noon on Friday, Jan. 20.

Donation Presented To York 4-H Program

Local farmer Gloria Eisenhour of Cedar Hill Farms recently directed a $5,000 Bayer Fund America’s Farmers Grow Communities donation to 4-H Clubs of York County.

4-H Clubs of York County will use the funds to offset the costs of a needed HVAC update to the 4-H Center. During the course of a year, the center hosts 283 4-H club meetings, events, roundups and sales. During that same time, the center hosts 224 external events, including health screenings, concerts, weddings and even large family reunions.

In 2022, Bayer Fund revamped the America’s Farmers Grow Communities program, making it easier for farmers across the country to find and fund the organizations and institutions that keep their communities

thriving. The changes included doubling the individual donations to $5,000, up from $2,500 in previous years, to provide a greater impact on rural communities.

For more than a decade, America’s Farmers Grow Communities has partnered with farmers to direct funds to programs and organizations that contribute to their communities’ health and vibrancy, such as food banks, schools and youth agriculture programs. Since the America’s Farmers program began in 2010, the initiative has awarded nearly $65 million to such programs.

Farmers can enroll for the opportunity to direct a 2023 Grow Communities donation starting in August. To learn more about the enrollment process and the America’s Farmers program, visit www.americasfarmers.com.

Library System Issues Challenge

York County Libraries (YCL) has a New Year’s challenge for area teens and adults: read 23 books in 2023. The yearlong reading challenge is for people age 13 and up and can be fulfilled by reading or listening to books and logging completions via the Beanstack app or website.

The challenge started on Jan. 1. Participants may rack up digital badges along the way, and after reading 13 books, they will receive a YCL silicone phone wallet, while supplies last. After achieving the goal of reading 23 books, participants will have a choice of a sticker or a commemorative pin.

There is no charge to participate, but a YCL card is needed. To obtain a free YCL card, visit any YCL library or www.yorklibraries.org.

To register for the reading challenge, visit https://york libraries.beanstack.org /reader365.

Additionally, the library recently hosted the Grade One At the Library (GOAL) program’s annual celebration. Each year, first-grade students across York County receive a specially designed library card when they sign up for GOAL.

This year’s program saw participation in 202 firstgrade classrooms in York County’s 16 school districts, private schools, and home schools. A total of 39 teachers achieved 100% participation, entering them into a drawing to win a school program by author Anthony D. Fredericks or ZooAmerica, along with books for the classroom.

A Winter Safety Guide For Seniors

The colder months and their inclement weather can be dangerous for any Lancaster County resident, and navigating snowy and icy conditions without the proper caution may result in injury or worse. During this season, seniors in the community may be more at risk than other people; here are some tips to help keep you and your loved ones safe.

Avoid going outside until snow and ice are removed from walkways and parking lots, especially after it gets dark. Once the sun sets, even if a path has been cleared, refreezing is more likely to occur. If you do need to leave the house, making sure that

you have a pair of shoes with non-skid soles greatly decreases your chance of slipping on ice or wet pavement. Any footwear that provides significant traction will make a winter stroll much safer.

If you use a cane, ensure that it is equipped with a rubber tip that has been recently replaced and that has not been worn smooth. Even if a walkway is cleared, remain wary of rock salt that may have been applied to the ground; it could result in a loss of traction for those who use a walker as the wheels are more likely to skid on the substance.

“Slipping and falling on ice hazards is one of the biggest issues during the wintertime,” said Bobbi-Jo Casseday, vice president of environmental ser-

vices at St. Anne’s Retirement Community. in Columbia. “(St. Anne’s) makes sure we keep our walkways clear and that residents watch out for re-freezing and ice patches.”

Another important practice during the winter months is to ensure you are stocked with the necessary supplies in case you are unable to leave your home. A winter storm may also prevent meals and prescriptions from being delivered. Keep your kitchen stocked with enough food and water to last for at least one week and make sure you have nonperishable food that does not require cooking or refrigeration in the event that you lose power. Keeping your medicine cabinet full of needed prescriptions prior to a

storm is also good practice; try to have prescriptions filled ahead of time if your area is expecting harsh weather.

Those who drive should stock their cars with basic emergency supplies for the winter. In case of emergency, a car should have a first aid kit, blankets, warm winter clothing, a windshield scraper, a shovel and a flashlight.

Don’t forget to check on your neighbors, relatives and friends. Aside from the physical dangers of the winter, inclement weather and limited travel can mean many seniors don’t receive as many visitors as usual. Practicing safety measures and checking in on others in the community can make this time of year safer for everyone.

Christmas Tree Recycling Program Posted

County residents may dispose of their Christmas trees in an environmentally friendly way by dropping them at the mulching site at Lancaster County Central Park, 1 Nature’s Way, Lancaster. Trees may be dropped off between dawn and dusk through Tuesday, Jan. 31.

The park mulching program is for Christmas trees only. No other yard waste will be accepted. Trees must be free of decorations, lights, plastic bags, and

hardware, including nails in the trunk. There is a limit of three trees per vehicle. Commercial haulers are strongly advised to contact their local municipalities for their respective Christmas tree recycling locations.

There is a suggested nominal donation for each tree. Donations will benefit the operation of the Dr. John Moss Native Tree Nursery in Central Park. Trees from the nursery are utilized throughout the Lancaster County Park System. A por-

tion of the funds are used to purchase emerald ash borer protection for about 26 ash trees in Lancaster County Central Park and Buchmiller County Park.

According to park officials, residents drop off about 1,000 Christmas trees each year, which produce 15 tons of mulch. The mulch is ideal for acid-loving plants such as rhododendrons and azaleas, and many deciduous ornamental trees and shrubs that require slightly acidic soil conditions. The mulch

will be available to residents on a first-come, first-served basis after Jan. 4, near the tree drop-off site. Persons desiring free mulch should bring a pitchfork or shovel and a bag or a trailer to transport it home.

For more information about the Christmas tree mulching program, call the park office at 717-299-8215 on weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. To learn more about the Lancaster County Department of Parks and Recreation, visit www.lancastercountyparks.org.

Millersville Church Posts Small Group

Millersville Community Church, 163 W. Frederick St., Millersville, will offer a free small group program for individuals who are struggling with mental health challenges beginning on Wednesday, Feb. 1. The program, titled Living Grace, will conclude on Wednesday, May 31, and each session will begin at 6:30 p.m. and end at 8 p.m. Millersville Community Church will provide child care free of charge during the group meetings. This will be the second year that Millersville Community Church has hosted Living Grace, which was an idea conceived by Kelly Dennis, a member of the congregation who works as a therapist. “I’ve noticed an increase in anxiety and depression after the pandemic,” said Dennis. “Church leaders may not be educated to deal with these issues, but a lot of people who are struggling go to their church leaders first.”

Dennis began to research

ways that the church could provide for those dealing with mental health issues and discovered a curriculum provided by The Grace Alliance, a nonprofit organization that offers mental health resources.

The Grace Alliance workbook and Living Grace program combine biblical and scientific information for members of the group; during each session, Dennis will facilitate the group as it discusses a specific issue related to mental health and then explore Bible studies and neuroscience that relate to the issue. Afterward, participants can further discuss and ask questions, and they are provided with an exercise to practice during the interim between meetings. Dennis emphasized that as she is a licensed therapist, she will only act as a facilitator for the group and that the program should not replace professional care.

“I would like to reduce the stigma surrounding mental

health challenges for folks,” said Dennis. “I want to let them know that they are supported and cared for and that they can do that for each other.” Dennis attributes the spike in mental health-related issues to the uncertainty that the world has experienced both during the COVID-19 pandemic and in the time following.

Living Grace was well received by the community in its first year, and only a few small changes have been made to the program. Dennis added a discussion point on cognitive behavioral therapy this year to better educate participants of the group, and she switched the meeting time to the evening to accommodate more participants’ schedules. “Everything else from last year remains the same; it was spot on,” said Dennis. “(The program) is thorough but also pretty simple.”

To register for Living Grace, call Dennis at 717-951-0266 or email kellyfdennis@yahoo.com.

CAP Squadron 304 Assists At Wreath-Laying

Civil Air Patrol (CAP) cadets and senior members from the Pennsylvania Wing, including members of the Jesse Jones Squadron 304, Lititz, participated in Wreaths Across America at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery in Annville on Dec. 17.

During an hourlong ceremony honoring veterans from each branch of service, Squadron 304 cadets participated in the Line of Patriots to honor the procession. Following the ceremony, cadets and senior members assisted with laying wreaths at the graves of United States veterans.

The remembrance wreathlaying ceremony aims to express honor and respect for veterans. More than 2.7 million wreaths were laid countrywide at over 3,700 locations, with over 42,000 wreaths laid at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery. When volunteers lay the wreaths, they are encouraged to say the veteran’s name aloud, thank them for their service and sacrifice and take a moment to reflect on that person and their life.

Wreaths Across America’s mission is to remember the fallen, honor those who serve and their families, and teach future generations about the price of freedom. This mission

is carried out all year.

Jesse Jones Squadron 304 meets each Monday except holidays at 7 p.m. in the Venture Jets hangar, located at the Lancaster Airport near the intersection of Lititz Pike and Millport Road. Visitors are welcome. Service to one’s community, state and nation is a primary part of the cadet programs within CAP.

The Civil Air Patrol is the allvolunteer U.S. Air Force auxiliary. For more information, visit www.GoCivilAirPatrol.com or www.CAP.news. Details about the Jesse Jones Squadron 304 are available at www.Jesse Jones.cap.gov and by searching for “Jesse Jones Composite Squadron 304” on Facebook.
