Don’t Snooze on a Good Night’s Sleep BY JEFF FALK
The importance of sleep to a human’s overall health and well being can’t be overstated. Both a societal problem and an individual problem - both a cause and an effect - sleep disorders are fairly common. But the good news is that at its most basic level, quality of sleep can be improved through relatively minor adjustments and common-sense measures. “We have absolutely made progress in this area,” said Masood Ahmad, a R124382

ast Lampeter Township is 12 months into its grand recreation exper iment. Time for an update. While results have been mostly mixed, some positive and quantifiable progress has been realized. But much work remains in the new recreation department’s mission to get the word out and provide activities that appeal to a majority of East Lampeter Township residents. “I always feel like we can be doing more and reaching more people,” said Lisa Cleveland, who as recreation director makes up East Lampeter Township’s one-person

The department has provided community events like movie nights, a fall festival and an Easter egg hunt; youth events like

This spring, the department introduced a community gardens program that allows individuals and families to rent plots of land at Community Park for growing vegetables, plants and flowers. Twelve of the 16 available plots are currently being utilized. The recreation department has also placed a strong emphasis on promoting and utilizing township facilities like Community Park, Flory Park, Lafayette-Tower Park and Gibbons Park at Nolt’s Mill, as well as fostering relationships with

LCWG Is Made Up of a Bunch of Do-Gooders BY JEFF FALK
Good is universal, timeless and objective. Because it mirrors God, good is good. The Lancaster County Women for Good (LCWG) group knows some things about the concept of doing good. It’s part of the all-volunteer organization’s mission, purpose and reason for existing. “We use that word a lot, ‘good,’” said Anna Horst, the chairperson of the five-member board that

I think there are a number of nonprofits in Lancaster County who have amazing missions. They’re real people trying to help real people. They are problems that a majority of us would agree need to be solved. Maybe we need to be more clear by what we mean by ‘good.’” LCWG, which does not operate from a physical office or building, conducts more than 15 member-

Are we ever too old to make new friends? Absolutely not, say the senior citizens who gather on Tuesday mornings for SALT (Seniors Are Living Treasures). The group meets for fun, friendship and fellowship from 9 a.m. to noon weekly at Mount Joy Church of God, 30 E. Main St., Mount Joy. “ We might have anywhere from 25 to 30 people each week,” said Tracy Miller, who coordinates the group with a team of volunteers. “We have people in their 50s and up. Our oldest member is 93.” Each meeting begins with people gathering up to 30 minutes early in the church lobby, enjoying the time to catch up with each other before heading into the chapel for coffee, food and games such as Uno or Apples to Apples. Coordinator Debbie Cohn might lead the group in chair yoga, or coordinator Renee Haney might direct a small group in devotionals or take prayer requests. Coordinator Nancy Shonk is in charge of the snack calendar, ensuring that everyone who wants to bring food has a chance to do so. The group does some activities once a month, such as playing bingo or enjoying a movie together. They also play roundrobin matches of games like cornhole or ladderball, switching tables regularly to encourage interaction among everyone. The group also brings in guest speakers to discuss a wide range of topics. Once a quarter, the See SALT pg 5

through a fundraising golf outing in 2012. To help Aaron’s Acres, Trimble began pledging $100 donations to the organization for every home he sold, and then he padded those donation with even more of his funds. At the beginning, Trimble’s intention wasn’t to donate a quarter of a million dollars to Aaron’s Acres; it just sort of accumulated that way. “If we had a good year, I’d donate a little more,” said Trimble. “Each year we’d donate money. Over the first few years, I really didn’t really pay too much attention to it. Then it kind of became, ‘Let’s see if we can do a little better than last year.’ It’s kind of evolved. We didn’t start with a specific goal.” In his role as a Realtor, Trimble receives a lot of requests from local schools, churches and organizations to donate money or to support fundraisers. His contributions can also serve as business marketing or as a way to promote goodwill in the community. “I’m successful, and I want to give back,” said Trimble. “My father always told me that society functions best when more are giving back than taking. This is my way to give back to society and Lancaster County.” As time has passed and Trimble has evolved as a person, it might be that his priorities have changed right along with his perspective. Maybe he sees things in a different light now. “There’s no doubt about that,” said Trimble. “When you’re younger, you have a few more bills. Now I have more breathing room, and I’ve become more generous.” Aaron’s Acres was first founded in 1998 as a summer camp to provide recreational opportunities for families with disabled children. Since then, the organization has expanded its services and activities to include year-round programming and include young adults with disabilities. Sleep Lab from pg 1 physician who is certified in sleep medicine and pulmonary disease by the American Board of Internal Medicine. “We understand sleep apnea better. We’re diagnosing more cases, and we’re managing them better. Now people understand it better. Everyone knows sleep is important.” Ahmad practices sleep medicine at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) Sleep Lab at 1575 Highlands Drive, Lititz. The sleep lab evaluates, assesses, diagnoses and provides personalized treatments for individuals experiencing a wide range of sleep disorders, including sleep apnea, narcolepsy, sleepwalking, sleeptalking, insomnia and restless legs syndrome. “We send patients to the sleep lab to diagnosis their sleep disorders,” said Ahmad. “We have to do the sleep studies to see how they sleep. Most of the times it’s nighttime studies for sleep apnea, but sometimes we do studies to see how sleepy they are during the day. We want to see how many times they stop breathing, how they maintain brain activities, how quickly they fall asleep and how quickly they get to REM (rapid eye movement) sleep. We look for body movements. We have to see what state the apnea is in. We coordinate all of those things, and then from the correlation we make a diagnosis.” With assistance from sleep technicians, typically nighttime studies are performed from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. at the (Lititz) Sleep Lab. Ahmad refers patients to the sleep lab, examines the results of the studies and also helps treat patients who have been referred by other physicians. “If someone comes to me and tells me, ‘I can’t sleep,’ I have to pinpoint the problem,” said Ahmad. “I’ll ask them, ‘What’s your history? What’s your specific problem? When you sleep, what happens?’ Some patients have multiple problems.” “Some people can’t sleep because of behavior problems, like TV and cellphones,” continued Ahmad. “I’ll

recommend managing stress better and not watching blue light one hour before bedtime. I’ll tell them to exercise regularly, no caffeine before bed, no snacks before bed and try not to nap during the daytime. These are common recommendations.” Ahmad recommends at least seven hours of sleep a night for adults and as much as 10 hours a night for children. “It should be quality sleep, deep sleep when you get to all of the sleep stages,” said Ahmad. “There are all different levels of sleep apnea, and for most sleep apneas, they should be treated by a CPAP (a machine that delivers a constant flow of pressurized air during sleep). If it’s something simple and there is no excessive daytime sleeping, we tell patients to simply lose weight. If you lose 10% of your body weight, you may lose 50% of your sleep apnea. If you lose 20% of your body weight, then there’s a good chance you may not have it.” According to Ahmad, up to 20% of the national population has experienced sleep disorders. Sleep disorders are more common in men, people who suffer from allergies or sinus issues, and people with obesity and there are genetic factors involved with their frequency. “I think it’s still underdiagnosed,” said Ahmad. “(Sleep disorders are a) risk factor for cancer. Sleep apnea is a risk factor for stroke. Sleep apnea is a risk factor for dementia and other diseases. It affects your immunity. It can produce hypertension, which leads to heart disease.” Because he practices what he preaches, Ahmad is his No. 1 patient. “Nine p.m. is bedtime, and 5 in the morning is when I get up,” said Ahmad. “I wake up at 5 every single day, even on weekends. If you keep regular hours, you’ll get better sleep. I’m a good sleeper. I sleep well.” For additional information, go to www.upmc.com/locations/ hospitals/lititz/services/sleep.

church’s pastor, Richard Vaughn, provides a full breakfast for the group. Although SALT meets at the church, religious affiliation is not a requirement to join the group. “It’s just a ministry through our church,” Miller said. “We will take anybody who is interested in coming. Some people come week after week. Some people have other activities they’re involved in and can only come once a month, and that’s OK.” Many of the members have lost a spouse and are looking for connection and companionship. That’s the case for Connie Bear, who started coming to SALT when the ministry began in October of 2024. “Today is three years since I lost my husband,” she said on a recent Tuesday morning. “In my marriage, I didn’t have friends really beyond my husband, so I was looking for somewhere to go to have fellowship and make new friends. I was looking for companionship.” She found that at SALT. “Everybody is so nice here,” she said. “We love each other. There are so many wonderful people here, and you feel like a family. I now have lots of friends to do things with, and we meet up outside of these mornings. We talk to each other outside of these meetings.” Fellowship is the focus of SALT meetings, although the food is a close second, the members joke. “Everyone pitches in, and it’s wonderful,” Shonk said. “This room
is filled with people who have found connection with each other.” SALT began when Miller recruited a few of her friends to help form the ministry. Seventeen people showed up for the first meeting, and the group has grown to include members from across Lancaster County. “There isn’t a senior center in the Mount Joy/Manheim area, and while we don’t want to be a senior center, we do want to provide outreach ministry,” Miller said. “We want to provide connection and fellowship.” While SALT officially meets once a week, its members get together regularly outside of the program, including meeting up for wing night at Beanie’s in Mount Joy or driving each other to doctor appointments. They also support each other through tough times. When Renee’s husband, Doug, passed away in August, SALT members showed up for her. “Eighteen people from here came to my husband’s funeral, and most had never met him,” she said. “We take care of each other. A lot of the people who come have said how lonely they were before this. Now they look forward to this. I can’t imagine a week going by without coming to this.” For member Mae Pierce, SALT has provided an opportunity to push herself outside of her comfort zone. “I needed to challenge myself
“Horst Auction Center”
to get out of the house,” she said. “SALT stands for Seniors Are Living Treasures, but this salt is the flavor that’s now part of my life. It’s gone beyond what it was supposed to be. I have met so many awesome friends. I go to the grocery story or a craft fair, and someone will yell out, ‘Mae!’ It’s so nice to have made so many connections.” “There’s fun stuff to do here. You’ll meet some characters, meet some sweet people and make some new friends,” Pierce continued. “It’s a community. You don’t have to be alone for that one morning a week.” SALT is open to anybody who is interested in attending, and people can just show up on a Tuesday morning; they do not need to register. The ministry is held year-round. People may park on the street and enter the church off of Main Street or access the building without climbing steps through the East Henry Street entrance via a parking lot at the rear of the church.
