ASL CLASSES

The Lancaster Center of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (LCDHH), 2270 Old Philadelphia Pike, Lancaster, will offer beginner non-credit American Sign Language (ASL) classes from 6 to 8 p.m. from Tuesday, Jan. 7, through Thursday, Feb. 27. Students will meet once per week on either Tuesday or Thursday. There is a cost per student, plus a fee for books. All courses will be taught by instructors who are deaf. Leacock Presbyterian Church, 3181 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise, will hold two Christmas Eve services on Tuesday, Dec. 24. A family worship service will be held in the Paradise sanctuary at 7 p.m., featuring The Bell Choir and candle lighting. An 11 p.m. service of Lessons and Carols will conclude with candle lighting and will be held at the historic Old Leacock Presbyterian Church, Old Leacock Road and Old Philadelphia Pike, 1 mile west of Intercourse. 10th Annual Glen Lapp Volleyball Tournament Scheduled Water Street Lancaster Mennonite School (LMS) will hold its 10th annual Glen Lapp Memorial Volleyball Tournament on Saturday, Jan. 4, and Saturday, Jan. 11, 2020, at Lancaster Mennonite High School (LMHS), 2176 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster. The tournament will be divided into two divisions with a maximum of 20 teams playing in each division. Division B will play beginning at 9 a.m. on Jan. 4, and Division A will play beginning at noon on Jan. 11. The tournament, which is held every January, commemorates the death and honors the life of Glen Lapp, a 1987 LMHS graduate and one of the school’s 2019 Alumni of the Year. The event benefits the Glen D. Lapp Endowment for Student Aid. Glen was killed on Aug. 5, 2010, when he and nine others were ambushed after holding an eye and dental clinic in a remote area of Afghanistan. Lancaster Mennonite High School graduate Glen Lapp was killed on Aug. 5, 2010, when he and nine others were ambushed in a remote area of Afghanistan. “We call this the Water Street Marriott location and youth hostel,” Mike Burkholder, chair of the board of directors of Water Street Mission, 210 S. Prince St., Lancaster, joked to open his comments at the Nov. 13 ribbon-cutting ceremony for the mission’s new Providence emergency shelter. - Carpenter’s Community, Emanuel United Methodist, and Ebenezer (Brownstown) E.C. - will offer a free Christmas dinner on Wednesday, Dec. 25, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. for anyone who is unable to afford a dinner or has no one to spend the day with or nowhere to go. Dinner will be served at the West Earl Fire Hall, 14 School Lane, Brownstown. Takeout meals will also be available. Schreiber Center Completes Portico, Plans Expansion The Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development, a Lancaster County-based provider of pediatric therapy services throughout central Pennsylvania, celebrated the renovation of the front entrance of its building, 625 Community Way, Lancaster, with a ribboncutting event under the new portico on Nov. 14. Schreiber leaders and supporters gathered for the event, which was planned primarily to thank the community for supporting the project. Donors who contributed to the project and attended the ribbon-cutting event included Sally Buckwalter, Mark Simeral, and Rick and Nancy Price. The new front entrance cost $300,000, and Schreiber raised all the money from private sources. The See Schreiber Center pg 7

Forest Hills Welcomes Youth Pastor By Ann Mead Ash

During a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Nov. 14, Schreiber Center president James DeBord thanked supporters who made possible the new portico, a project that sets up the next major construction plan for Schreiber: a three-story, $6 million expansion that will add 20,000 square feet of space.

For Zac Hummel, who officially became the youth and young adult pastor at Forest Hills Mennonite Church on Oct. 28, there was a familiarity about his new place of employment. Hummel was raised in Bird-in-Hand and was dedicated at Forest Hills as a baby. He grew up in the congregation, departing when he headed to Geneva College in Beaver Falls, where he earned a degree in Christian ministries and philosophy. During college, Hummel spent some time doing mission work in New Orleans, making the move back to Lancaster County last spring. “I got connected (to New Orleans) when I was in college,” said Hummel, who traveled to the area over three spring breaks in addition to doing summer internships See Forest Hills pg 10
