Zion Schedules Holiday Craft Show And Cookie Walk

Zion Lutheran Church, 18 Quarry Road, Leola, is planning a Holiday Craft Show and Cookie Walk for Saturday, Dec. 7, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event is a longstanding Christmas tradition.

This year’s show will include a number of local vendors selling a variety of craft items. “More than 20 vendors will have displays this year,” said organizer Patty Williams, who listed greenery, arrangements, moisturizing products, holiday crafts, home décor, jewelry, clothing accessories, doll clothes, and wall hangings among the items that would be available for purchase.

The cookie walk has long been a popular part of the show. Williams noted that each participant will receive a glove and a box to fill with homemade

cookies to take home. The cookie walk will begin at 9 a.m. and continue until all the cookies have been sold. A cookie decorating area and a special shopping area for children will also be offered.

Vendors and church members will provide donated items for door prizes.

Williams noted that Santa Clauses and snowmen will be among the prizes.

Food available for purchase at the show will include chicken corn soup made by members of the Bareville Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary, vegetable soup, pulled pork, and hamburger barbecue. A bake sale will also be held.

Last year’s craft show raised about $2,000, which was donated to local fire and ambulance companies as well as Lutheran Disaster Relief.

“It totally blows my mind on all this,” Sanders marveled. “It’s an idea we brought to the public, and they support us.”

While Sanders dreams about buying a farm for the Pet Pantry, where pets would have room to run and interact with potential adoptive families, she is happy to show off the current facility. An open house on Saturday, Dec. 7, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. will enable community members to tour the building, see the “state of the heart” surgical suite, meet staff members and volunteers, and interact with adoptable dogs and cats.

“We want people to come out and be educated on what we do here and how we meet the needs of the community,” Sanders said.

Guests are invited to bring dry pet food with them to the open house. While both dog food and cat food are needed, the Pet Pantry is currently experiencing a shortage of cat food. About 3,000 pounds of cat

food is distributed each month, Sanders said, although she added that she typically underestimates how much food is given to households that would otherwise not be able to afford to keep their pets.

The Pet Pantry is currently supporting 325 households, with distribution locations in Gap and Lancaster city, as well as at its headquarters. “We’re helping people become responsible owners,” Sanders commented, noting that program participants are required to have their pets spayed or neutered and vaccinated. Dogs must be licensed in accordance with state law.

Well-behaved pets may be brought to the open house, as photographs with Santa Claus will be available for a small fee. Light refreshments will be served.

Attendees may shop the thrift store, which will offer pet-themed Christmas gifts. Jewelry and “12 Dogs of Christmas” dog treats will be for sale as well.

The observance opened with at least 30 veterans in attendance. Rep. Keith Greiner served as master of ceremonies, and pastor Bruce Tully of Salem Evangelical Reformed Church, Hellers, said the opening prayer. The national anthem was played, and the group said the Pledge of Allegiance, after which the hymns of each branch of the military were played. Veterans were encouraged to rise when they heard the hymn of the branch in which they had served.

Greiner then introduced Lancaster County Commissioner Craig Lehman, who spoke about what Veterans Day means to him. A Navy veteran, Lehman referenced his memories of others he served with. He

pointed to the flag as a promise of the ideals of the United States. “As humans we are imperfect, so our country will always be a work in progress,” he said, adding, “What we have that no other nation has is the best ideals to strive for … that is truly a miracle.” Lehman pointed to veterans as the people who give Americans the opportunity to strive for that more perfect union. “They are the ones who make sure this country is free … and safe,” he said.

Following a pancake and sausage breakfast, Don Beatty of the Liberty War Bird Association spoke briefly. The organization, which was founded in 2011 by a Vietnam helicopter pilot, has purchased a

Joe Wells, who served in the Army Signal Corps from 1967 to 1970, including a year in Vietnam, was the keynote speaker.

Wells taught history in the Manheim Central School District for many years, and he is a collector of military identification tags, more commonly known as dog tags.

In a multimedia demonstration, Wells showed photos of tags and passed tags around the room for attendees to see and touch. He explained that during the Civil War, soldiers made their own tags from coins or had them made by jewelers. During World War I, the armed forces began issuing tags, which included a soldier’s name, military branch, and service number. By the 1920s, some tags included date in service, birth date, and a thumb print. Later, blood types were added.

Before World War II began, next-of-kin tags included the name and address of the soldier’s closest relative.

The event concluded with a closing prayer offered by Tully and the playing of taps in memory of departed veterans.

The Lancaster Chamber Singers (LCS) will celebrate the Christmas season with a two-concert series. The concerts will be presented on Saturday, Dec. 14, at 7 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, 221 E. Main St., New Holland, and on Sunday, Dec. 15, at 3 p.m. at St. Edward Episcopal Church, 2453 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster.

The ensemble hopes that the special concert, which will include an opportunity for audience participation, will fill audience members with the joy and exuberance of the Christmas season. The performance will feature old classics - such as “Away in a Manger” and “What Child Is This?” alongside newer pieces. Several pieces will be accompanied by instrumental

In a small bowl, scramble egg. Open and remove the wrapping (not the white rind) and dip into egg mixture. Coat the brie evenly with Panko breadcrumbs, pressing crumbs into brie. Roll ends in breadcrumbs as well. Set aside. Drizzle medium-sized pan with olive oil and heat over medium-high heat until oil is hot. Place brie in pan and fry for several minutes until the breadcrumbs are golden brown. With brie up on its end, gradually rotate brie until ends are cooked, then flip over and cook the other side. Remove from heat and set on serving board. Heat apricot preserves in a pan on low heat (or microwave for 30 seconds at a time). Stir in diced apricots. It is currently repaired and flying. “We use it to educate people about what happened in Vietnam and what the helicopter’s role was,” said Beatty. When Beatty finished speaking, Bob Zook of ULTWMA presented him with a check from ULTWMA to the Liberty War Bird Association.

Jean Summers of Patriotic Stitchers, a group that is sponsored by ULTWMA, also spoke. Summers explained that the Stitchers create blankets, afghans, and quilts for Lancaster County veterans in hospice care. “We also give them to Lebanon and Coatesville Veterans Affairs facilities,” she said. “Since March, we have given out more than 100 blankets.”

Greiner spoke briefly, asking for a moment of silence for members of the military who made the ultimate sacrifice.

“We are here to honor all our brave veterans and their noble service to our country,” he said. “It’s our civic responsibility to never forget the sacrifice made on our behalf. This nation remains free only

On Dec. 7 at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., there will be a harpsichord and harp concert. On Dec. 8 at 12:30 and 2 p.m., a solo handbell musician will perform. Belsnickel, a traditional German character who identifies who has been naughty or nice, will be around both days to visit with families.

There will be plenty of makeand-take crafts for children and adults alike. Children can write and post a letter to Santa Claus at

his special local post box. Unique gifts will be available at the museum store. Weather permitting, horse-drawn wagons will take visitors on a tour of the property.

The hours of the event are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Dec. 7 and noon to 4 p.m. on Dec. 8. Tickets are available online or at the gate.

A unique Christmas tree and cookie ornaments will be on display during Christmas in the Village at Landis Valley Village & Farm Museum on Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 7 and 8. The event will include living history re-enactors, music, make-and-take crafts, shopping opportunities, and more.

Cloister To Host Musical Program The Historic Ephrata Cloister, 632 W. Main St., Ephrata, will welcome the holiday season with its 54th annual Christmas at the Cloister musical program on Monday, Dec. 9, and Tuesday, Dec. 10.

The program will be held twice each night at 6:30 and 8 p.m.

Held in the original 1741 Saal, or Meetinghouse, the program will be in a lessons and carols style and will combine the Christmas

story with seasonal music, including carols. The program will feature the talents of the Ephrata Cloister Chorus. This year’s guest musician will be harpsichordist Faith Martin of Ephrata. Following the program, participants are invited to enjoy mulled cider and cookies in the Visitor Center.

Meetinghouse Sets Christmas Event The fourth annual Christmas at the Wenger Meetinghouse will be held at the 1871 Historic Wenger Meetinghouse, 16 Supervisors Drive, Jonestown, Lebanon County, on Sunday, Dec. 8, at 3 p.m.

Attendees will get into the Christmas spirit with Christmas traditions from the past.

Scripture and Christmas songs will be presented in both Pennsylvania German and English. Music will be provided by Die Schwadore Schalle (Swatara Sounds).

The group is directed by Alice Spayd, who teaches Pennsylvania German at the Brendle Museum of Historic Schaefferstown Inc. In closing, “The Night Before Christmas� will be read in Pennsylvania German.

The interior of the meetinghouse will be decorated for the Christmas season, and light refreshments will be served.

There is no fee to attend; however, donations of any amount to help preserve the meetinghouse will be appreciated.

An open house of the restored meetinghouse will be held at 2:30 p.m., a half-hour before the program begins.

Christmas in the Village will be held at Landis Valley Village & Farm Museum on Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 7 and 8. Visitors are invited to enjoy Landis Valley Village & Farm Museum’s old-fashioned Christmas Village, which will be decorated for the season and full of the sights, sounds, and smells of an old-fashioned holiday.

“Christmas In Paradise” Activities Planned

Library Will Host Event Directed by Elliot Sterenfeld and featuring Grace Henderson, Joel Lesher, Isadora Marquez, Brady Norgaard and Sydney Norgaard, the play will be performed in Bates Auditorium at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Carol Woodman serves as stage manager, with set design and construction by Tama Etra and Aaron Zinner.

The day’s events are free and open to the public, but registration is required for the play performances, as space is limited.

A variety of activities will help to kick off the holiday season in Paradise on Saturday, Dec. 7. The Paradise Township Lions Club will hold its annual Christmas Market in the Together Community Center. Leacock Presbyterian Church has scheduled Trees, Treats ’n’ Treasures. The Paradise Leaman Place Fire Company will hold a vendor fair, and the Paradise Township tree lighting ceremony will be held at the township building.

The Christmas Market will be held at the community center, 3293 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. More than 30 vendors selling items including original art, photographs, candles, handmade soap, and crafts will fill the gymnasium, along with representatives of Mary Kay, Thirty-One Bags, Tupperware, and Scentsy. At 10:30 a.m., a special visitor from the North Pole will arrive to greet those in attendance.

The event is co-chaired by Mary Alice High and Crystal Gregg.

Door prizes, donated by vendors, will be given away. Those who bring canned good donations for The Factory food pantry

or glasses for the Lions Club will receive extra tickets. Winners will have their choice of door prizes while they last.

Food items that will be available for purchase will include coffee, egg sandwiches, homemade chicken corn soup, grilled cheese, pork barbecue, hot dogs, baked goods, and soda.

The Leacock Church bazaar, a tradition in the area for more than 40 years, will take place at the church, 3181 Lincoln Highway East, Paradise, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. As in the past, the event will feature a variety of items for purchase, including ornaments, cards, jewelry, and handcrafted items.

Homemade treats, such as baked goods and sweets will be offered, along with the church’s popular peanut butter bonbons in milk and dark chocolate flavors.

The bazaar will also feature fresh greens made into arrangements, along with holiday décor for inside and outside the home.

Themed baskets are a hallmark of the bazaar. In previous years, baskets included a coffee lovers basket, a learn-to-knit basket, a children’s book basket, and more.

Along with the bazaar, the

Holiday Café will be open, and both breakfast and lunch items will be available for purchase.

Paula Knosp of the Paradise Leaman Place Fire Company, 57 Hershey Ave., Paradise, said the vendor fair at the fire hall will feature more than 20 vendors, including representatives of home-based businesses and those selling craft items. Representatives of a number of Paradise organizations have joined together for Christmas in Paradise on Dec. 7. The Paradise Township Lions Club, Leacock Presbyterian Church, and Paradise Leaman Place Fire Company will all host activities during the day. Lisa Kalinowski, founder of CoJoMotion Dance Company of the Lititz Academy of Dance and the organizer of “A Season for Wishes,” is getting prepared for the 15th annual “A Season for Wishes” event this year. “I am getting super excited for it,” said Kalinowski, whose past efforts have raised more than $330,000 to help grant nearly 50 wishes for area Make-A-Wish children.

The 2019 presentation of “A Season for Wishes” will take place at Manheim Township High School, 115 Blue Streak Blvd., Lancaster, on Saturday, Dec. 7, beginning at 6 p.m. All proceeds from the event, which will include a poinsettia sale, a bake sale, and a Chinese auction featuring a number of theme baskets, will benefit Make-A-Wish Philadelphia, Delaware, and

Susquehanna Valley to help grant the wishes of seriously ill children.

Each year, Kalinowski considers ways to keep the program fresh. “This year, we will have a couple new numbers,” she said. “Every year, we try to change it a little, but still do a lot of the same favorites.”

New numbers in this year’s show will include “Where Are You Christmas?” and “Hip-Hop Holidays.” Among the more than 20 dance numbers to be performed by nearly 40 dancers will be “Jingle Bell Rock,” “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel,” and “Snow.”

Other dance numbers that will be featured this year will include “Mele Kalikimaka,” “Trepak,” and “Hot Chocolate.” As in the past, “Mele Kalikimaka” will include a special appearance by some guest dancers. Both “Trepak” and “Hot Chocolate” will be tap numbers.

An outdoor deck will allow attendees to safely enjoy watching as Amtrak trains race pass the 137-year-old freight station at nearly 90 mph. Visible eastward across the tracks is a 1907 Pennsylvania Railroad passenger station. Passenger service from this station was discontinued in 1952.

Newly installed stairs will allow visitors to climb aboard an N7E caboose restored to its Conrail-era paint and logo scheme. The caboose sits along the mainline on the east side of the freight station.

The caboose has an enlarged logo that was normally installed on the Conrail engines. Only two cabooses of 20 in the N7E class are believed to have been outfitted with a large, rather than small, logo. A chapter volunteer will give additional informative facts about the caboose and the Amtrak mainline that runs

through Christiana.

The Lancaster Chapter National Railway Historical Society (NRHS) will host open houses at the Christiana freight station, 10 Railroad Ave., Christiana, on Sundays, Dec. 15 and 29, from 1 to 5 p.m. Visitors will be able to enjoy a leisurely tour of the 1882 freight station decorated for the holidays. Railroad Museum Plans Holiday Event The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania, 300 Gap Road, Strasburg, will host is annual Home for the Holidays event on Saturdays, Dec. 7 and 14.

The first edition of the 2019-20 Jack Frost Jubilee Winter Fun Show Series was held at Crescendo Training Centre LLC in Ephrata. Almost 50 horses and riders competed at the show on Nov. 16 and 17.

There was high turnout despite cold and windy weather.

Many different disciplines were offered including: Dressage and Western Dressage with 36 rides; Ranch Horse with 58 entries; Showmanship, Western Horsemanship, and Pleasure with 21 entries; Hunter Over Fences with 80 rounds; English Equitation and Pleasure with 29 entries; and Games and Gymkhana with 26 entries. 22nd Holiday Celebration Planned In V illage Of Inter course As autumn draws to a close, cities, small towns, and villages across America prepare for the advent of winter and the coming of Christmas. In the Village of Intercourse, shop owners and other members of the community begin to string up lights and hang greenery tied with colorful ribbons. The holidays will soon be here, and the merchants of Intercourse especially look forward to sharing the joy of Christmas with visitors from near and far.

Each year when December arrives, the village marks the occasion with special events and activities. Among them is the 22nd annual Holiday Celebration for the Intercourse Merchants Association, and on Friday, Dec. 6, and Saturday, Dec. 7, the members of the association will invite visitors to enjoy food, entertainment,

unique prizes, and the arrival of Santa.

This year’s event will begin with the traditional Children’s Treasure Hunt. Starting at 9 a.m. on Friday, children may pick up a map at the Best Western Intercourse Village Inn, 3610 E. Newport Road. The hunt, which invites participants to solve riddles and win prizes, will be held all day Friday and Saturday.

The Pequea Valley Public Library (PVPL), 31 Center St., Intercourse, will once again be the scene of several events that kick off the village holiday season. At 5 p.m. on Dec. 6, there will be a holiday craft time for children, followed by refreshments, available by donation. Cancer Center Undergoing Renovation WellSpan Ephrata Cancer Center is undergoing a $7.1 million renovation that will add new, state-of-the-art technology, as well as feature a redesign of the center. The work began in July and is scheduled to be completed in spring 2020.

The renovations, which add upgraded technology, include: a new True-Beam Linear Accelerator, offering pinpoint accuracy and precision in the radiation treatment of cancer patients; a

new CT simulator, allowing patients convenient access to the equipment physicians use to plan radiation treatments; and a state-of-the-art pharmacy that will prepare infusion medications for patients.

Planned with input from WellSpan Ephrata Cancer Center patients, the renovated center will feature redesigned treatment areas for both radiation and oncology patients.

Crew 82, which provides high adventure experiences for young men and women. Lyndsey also sought inclusion of female youths in the Order of the Arrow, BSA’s honor society. Earlier this year, Lauren and Lyndsey became members of the first group of young women and Venturers to be elected into the Order of the Arrow.

The Nedrow sisters have received BSA’s Venturer, Discovery, and Pathfinder awards on the advancement track to the Summit Award, and both Scouts have also earned the Ranger Award for mastering outdoor skills. In addition, Lauren earned the Quest Award for fitness and sports.

As part of their Summit Award requirements, the sisters also completed service projects. Lauren’s butterfly garden will promote a healthy environment for monarch butterflies at the Ephrata Cloister, and Lyndsey’s trophy case will display the accomplishments of the Conestoga Valley Swim Team at the Leola Pool.

Lyndsey is a freshman at Gettysburg College, and Lauren is a freshman at the University of Pittsburgh.

It is estimated that fewer than 50 Summit Awards are presented each year to youths among BSA’s 2 million Scouts and 192,000 Venturers.

BSA’s Venturing program focuses on adventure, leadership, personal growth, and service. Lauren and Lyndsey have spent four years as active members and officers of New Birth of Freedom Council’s Venturing Crew 1861 of Gettysburg. In addition to traditional Scouting activities, Crew 1861 portrays a Civil War fife and drum corps and participates in major reenactments, community parades and events. Crew 1861’s members hail from Maryland and southcentral Pennsylvania, and the group is chartered by the Gettysburg Battlefield Preservation Association.

Both Lauren and Lyndsey were youth leaders for the New Birth of Freedom Council contingent at the 2017 National Scout Jamboree. Lyndsey received the New Birth of Freedom Council’s Venturing Leadership Award for her leadership qualities, particularly at the National Jamboree.

Lauren and Lyndsey also applied their leadership experience to form the new Scouts BSA Troop 82 in Brownstown, which the troop reported is the first girls’ troop in Pennsylvania Dutch Council, and Venturing

Foundation Awards Grants The Conestoga Valley Education Foundation (CVEF) recently awarded nearly $25,000 in grants to fund academic resources and programs for students in Conestoga Valley School District.

These programs are outside the district budget.

CVEF is a registered nonprofit organization committed to enhancing Conestoga Valley (CV) schools by funding innovative programs and classroom strategies. Since its inception, CVEF has provided more than $1 million in grants to teachers, administrators, and students. Grant awards are announced in the fall and spring.

In the fall 2019 cycle, projects receiving CVEF grant awards include Animals and Their Habitats, funding a hands-on project

for elementary students to learn about the world’s habitats; Explore and Build Tubs, providing tubs of supplies that relate to three areas of the Profile of a CV Learner; STEM Wednesdays, supplying materials needed to dedicate weekly time to science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) activities; Math Magic, which funds a magician who specializes in showing students mental math-related tricks and teaching interpersonal soft skills; and BUCKS Vegetable Garden Collaborative, which aims to build a vegetable garden in the newly renovated high school courtyard.

Mock Trial, funding a mock trial trip to invitationals at Penn State; Lego-Based Social Skills Club, which provides materials for a Lego-based club for students with special needs; and Sensory Paths, funding the installation of sensory paths at Leola Elementary.

Projects also include Math Resources for STEM Lab, which purchases manipulatives and resources for math lessons at Brownstown Elementary; Fritz Basketball Club, which helps to purchase updated supplies for the Fritz Elementary Basketball Club; and Yoga to Improve Sensory, Self Regulation, and Motor Skills in Kids, which seeks to helps implement a yoga program for students facing sensory processing challenges.

ManChoir funds a one-day music making event for schoolage male singers in the county, and Flexible Seating in the Primary Classroom provides flexible seating options for a secondgrade classroom at Leola. Curricular Tool - Art Reproductions provides art reproduction posters for all six schools.

CVEF receives funding through the Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC), which credits businesses up to 90% of their donations while funds last, and local fundraising initiatives such as the Clark Foundation’s Derby Day, the CVEF Golf Classic, the Extraordinary Give, and private donations.

Lead Reduction Grants Received The City of Lancaster has been awarded a $9.1 million Lead Hazard Reduction Grant through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, plus an additional $600,000 of Healthy Homes supplemental funding.

The Lead Hazard Reduction Grant will systematically make 710 housing units in Lancaster city lead-safe. The Healthy Homes supplemental funding will enable the city to address other health hazards such as radon, mold and tripping hazards in 120 homes.

The funding will enable the city to scale up its existing Lead Hazard Control Program by hiring additional staff, including outreach workers. Much of the funding will go directly to construction costs to mitigate lead.

The city has active partnerships with contractors and construction firms certified to do this work. The city is seeking additional contractors to complete the work and will be partnering with local job training programs

to increase the pool of lead-certified contractors who are eligible to bid on the jobs.

The focus area for the grant is four census tracts (9, 10, 14, and 147) south of King Street where 16,000 residents live. The majority of houses in the area were built prior to 1940, and many have lead-based paint present.

Lead poisoning affects the central nervous system and brain, especially in fetuses and young children. Lead poisoning hinders development and the ability to learn and regulate behavior.

The city will work closely with community partners to promote the program, including Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health, Lancaster Health Center, Partnership for Public Health, the Public Health program at Franklin & Marshall College, School District of Lancaster, and active neighborhood organizations within the target area.

HARTZ Physical Therapy’s 16th annual Fall Blast 5K run/walk was held on Oct. 5, and it proved to be one for the record books.

Over the past 15 years, $189,000 has been donated to various Lancaster-based charities from the proceeds of the annual event. For the first time this year, all proceeds were earmarked to benefit Off the Streets (OTS) Lancaster, an organization working with local service agencies to assist families and individuals to get “off the streets” and into permanent housing.

After all financial results were tallied, the staff of HARTZ Physical Therapy was able to present Off the Streets Lancaster volunteers and board members with a check for $35,000. The annual tally represents the highest net proceeds ever raised through the event - topping the previous record by $15,000.

OTS is a volunteer-run, charitable organization focused on eradicating homelessness in Lancaster County. OTS works in partnership with various other community aid organizations to identify homeless individuals and families who have a sustainable source of income to pay rent but need help overcoming the last obstacles to obtaining permanent housing: a security deposit and basic furniture. Since originating in Lancaster County in May 2013, OTS Lancaster has helped more than 2,500 men, women and children.

Lena Hohenadel, grants coordinator for OTS Lancaster, noted that the funds from the Fall Blast 5K will directly help 49 families with income who are experiencing homelessness in Lancaster County.

She reported that requests for help increased 38% in 2018 over 2017, and an additional increase is

The City of Lancaster Office of Public Art has opened a new exhibit in City Hall Gallery, 120 N. Duke St., Lancaster.

Brant Schuller’s “Redistricting: 50 Variations on 13 Shapes” is free and open to the public.

This fine art exhibit reimagines the 50 states’ voting districts and the power that comes with reordering them. The show coincides with the efforts of city and county government to make sure that everyone is counted for the 2020 census, and the show is scheduled to run through Jan. 3, 2020. It includes a self-serve station where visitors can create their own district lines with stamps. The print station will be operable throughout the period of exhibition.

City Hall Gallery is open weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. It will be closed on Dec. 25 and 26 and Jan. 1, 2020.

COBYS Family Services will offer a resource family orientation session on Tuesday, Dec. 17, at 6 p.m. at the COBYS Murry Hill Center office, 444 Murry Hill Circle, Lancaster.

Students Perform In Honors Music Recital Lancaster Music Teachers Association (LMTA) held its annual Dorothy Sutton Performance Festival Honors Recital on Oct. 20. Fifteen local instrumental students participated in the recital, performing works from the Baroque to the Modern eras.

The Dorothy Sutton Performance Festival took place on Oct. 6 at Lancaster Bible College. The festival had two components: a performance of two pieces for adjudication and a music theory exam. Students whose performance was ranked as Superior and who earned a score of 85% or higher on the exam were eligible to play in the Honors Recital and were also eligible for the State Showcase Recital at Penn State on Nov. 23.

WYPA is one of the student organizations sponsored by the Musical Art Society and is made up of outstanding young classical musicians who are preparing for competitions, auditions, and other solo performances. The group meets monthly, sharing upperlevel historic repertoire, and presents public recitals in December, April, and June. Mentors are Margaret Marsch, Bonnie Witmer, and Dora Zlatkin.

On Dec. 8, members will perform piano and violin works by Bach, Handel, Chopin, Debussy, and Khachaturian, as well as a piano concerto by Mozart. The program will also include siblings Faith, Charity, and Clayton Martin performing on harpsichord, harp, and cello. They will perform historic and Christmas music in period dress. The trio is also providing music at historic sites this Christmas season, including the Ephrata Cloister, Landis Valley Museum, and Pennsbury Manor.

The concert is free and open to the public. The venue is handicapped-accessible. Donations will be received to provide student scholarships.

Jackson Howard To Perform At Cafe Folk singer-songwriter Jackson Howard will play at Emmaus Road Cafe on Saturday, Dec. 7.

Doors will open at 7 p.m., and the music will begin at 7:30 p.m.

Howard’s neo-folk weaves lyrics reminiscent of Paul Simon over fingerpicking in the style of Tommy Emmanuel. Jackson has toured the U.S., Canada, Iceland, Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands. His latest release, “Just for the Mystery,” recorded at Dark Horse Studios, has been played on more than 100 radio stations in the U.S. and Europe and has been licensed by several television networks for use in their programming.

Having earned a doctorate and worked in research prior to his music career, Howard performs several songs that deal with change and humanity’s eternal search for self. After juggling a job at Washington University in St. Louis with a growing performance schedule, Howard ultimately left academia in 2015 to focus his energies on his music full time. To

UDS Gift Wrap Volunteers Sought Volunteers are needed to wrap holiday gifts at Park City Center during the Christmas season. Wrapping is sponsored by United Disabilities Services Foundation in support of the lives of people with physical and age-related disabilities.

Gifts are wrapped for shoppers at the “S” Mall of Park City Center

during all regular mall hours through Christmas. More than 500 volunteers from throughout the community are needed to provide coverage for all available shifts. A shift is typically two to four hours.

Proceeds from the gift wrapping project will benefit United Disabilities Services Foundation,

a Lancaster-based nonprofit which provides programs and services to help people with disabilities live more independent lives in the community. Funds raised will be put to work in programs such as adult day programming, custom wheelchair seating, and United Disabilities Services

(UDS) service dogs.

The foundation is still accepting volunteers to wrap. Individuals and volunteers 14 years of age or older from church, community, civic, or school groups or individuals are invited to register for various shifts.
