Sing For The Moment Schedules Seasonal Concert Quilting And Giving

Working together with Candy Yingling at the Alzheimer’s Association Greater Pennsylvania Chapter, Faith Hoover, director of Adult Day Services and coordinator of the Memory Loss Support Group at Landis Homes, devised a way for area Alzheimer’s patients who have an interest in singing to rehearse together and present two yearly concerts at Landis Homes. Hoover asked Clair Leaman, conductor of the “Messiah” Sing-Alongs at Westminster Presbyterian in Lancaster and in Chester County, to work with the group, and Sing for the Moment held its first holiday concert in December 2018.

Back in 2005, May Kay Hymes founded a quilting group at Highland Presbyterian Church, 500 E. Roseville Road, Lancaster. Hymes has left the area, but she keeps in touch with the quilters by hosting yearly quilting retreats. The Highland Quilters still meet each Wednesday in Room 204 of the church, and they estimate they have completed approximately 35 quilts per year since the group began working together.

In addition to quilts, members of the group make quilted items such as placemats, table runners, and quilted bowl holders that can be used in the microwave. Fran Stefany estimates she has made at least 2,000 quilted microwaveable bowl holders.

Red Rose Figure Skating Club Journey To Bethlehem Continues To Present “Bring It On”

Ursula Wolfer, director of the Red Rose Figure Skating Club’s December show, has chosen for this year’s presentation a storyline that will focus on the trials and tribulations of being a teenager. The show is called “Bring It On,” and Wolfer said that the script and skating will add a few twists and turns to the musicals and movies of the same name. “We use the musical as our base, but we spin off in many directions,” explained Wolfer.

Adam Fox, summer camp director at Woodcrest Retreat, has been involved in the annual Journey to Bethlehem - an interactive Nativity held at the camp - for

six years, but some parts of the program still amaze him. “I still get that sense of awe when the angels appear, (even though) I know it’s going to happen,” said Fox of one of the six scenes witnessed by visitors who take the journey.

For 2019, the Manheim Township High School (MTHS) cross-country team’s booster club has decided to make a few changes to the annual 5K/Ugly Sweater Run. “We want to make it more community and family focused this year,” said assistant junior high coach, booster club member, and race organizer Michael Phillips. “We plan to have hot chocolate and cider and hot soup afterward for participants,” he added, noting that a disc jockey will play Christmas music and an award will be given to the runner wearing the ugliest Christmas sweater.

This year’s, fundraiser 5K race will be held on Saturday, Dec. 7, beginning at 10 a.m. at Landis Run Intermediate School, 25 Blue Streak Blvd., Lancaster. A 1-mile fun run for youths will be held at 10:45 a.m. There are fees to take part in the 5K and the fun run. Awards for 5K participants will be presented at 11 a.m.

According to Phillips, there will be changes in this year’s route. “This will be a brand new course at Landis Run Intermediate School designated just for the Ugly Sweater Run,” said Phillips, who added that the run will start and finish at the school. The course will be entirely on

grass and dirt, making it a true crosscountry course. “It’s a rolling course,” said Phillips, who added that the course is appropriate for beginning runners. “It will be well marked,” he said.

In the spirit of making the run a family event, Phillips noted that those wishing to cheer on a friend or loved one traversing the course will have that opportunity.

“We have made it more spectator friendly, so there will be multiple times you can see the 5K and one-mile runners from one particular spot,” he said The race, which will be professionally chip timed by Pretzel City Sports, is open to individuals from all over the county and beyond, and cash prizes will be awarded to top overall male and female winners. Prizes will also be awarded to the top three male and female runners in each of seven age groups. A walker division will also be available.

The team will again help a nonprofit organization as part of the 5K. This year, Power Packs Project will be the recipient.

“We want to support a community organization that helps local people,” explained Phillips. “We will have a protein drive.” A collection box will be available at this year’s race for those who would like to donate canned goods such

The booster club has had a longterm goal of raising money for a timing system for the high school meets, and Phillips believes that a successful Ugly Sweater Run this year will make that dream come true. Funds raised are also used to purchase T-shirts, hold preseason team-building outings, honor senior run-

“There are so many ways we can support the athletes,” said Phillips. “They’re a great group of (students).”

Shirley Banks does hand quilting on special hoops. Recent new member Megan Stock, who served in the Navy from 1997 to 2005, joined the group after learning of the quilting project for veterans.

Highland Quilters from pg 1 Over the years, the members, who hail from throughout the county, have completed quilts and quilted items for a number of purposes. Just before July 4, about 20 red, white, and blue quilts were given to veterans at Hospice & Community Care in Lancaster, which partners with We Honor Veterans, a program of the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization in cooperation with the Department of Veterans Affairs.

The project began in early 2019 when Highland Quilters member Tricia Hough, who volunteers with hospice, received a donation from Thrivent Lutheran to purchase fabric and batting.

“We each had a box of red, white, and blue fabric,” said member Juanita Fowler. “So we used the same fabric with different patterns.” Patterns that were used to create quilts from the patriotic fabric included Pinwheel, Rail Fence, Basket Weave, and Star.

One quilt, made by Sue Esch, went to a veteran many miles away. “I made a quilt for my son, who was injured,” said Esch, who explained that her son was hurt while serving in the Army in Germany about 20 years ago. Her son, who is now in his late 50s, lives in

Oregon. This fall, Esch sent him the quilt she had made. “He received it, and he was overjoyed,” reported Esch. “He said, ‘I opened it, and I laid down in the recliner and covered myself up with it.’”

The quilt sent to Esch’s son was not the first to bring comfort from Highland to a faraway place.

“Our first mission project was in El Salvador,” said Fowler, who recalled that the church first began helping people there by rebuilding homes after an earthquake and later by supporting a school. While mission teams took quilts to comfort those affected by the earthquake, the quilters found additional ways to use their creations to help. “When we had a (church) bazaar, we sold quilts and used money to support the school,” explained Fowler.

Quilter Gale Whitworth explained that wherever the church sends members to do mission work, members take quilts with them to give away. Some quilts have traveled to Mars Hill, N.C., while more recently some have gone to West Virginia. During an intergenerational mission trip this year, church members took several quilts and gave them to the families they helped.

2019 Holiday Program Posted The 2019 Holiday Program sponsored annually by the Lancaster County Office of Aging is underway. This year, the agency will provide grocery store gift cards to clients in need, allowing them to choose fresh foods specific to their diet or other foods they enjoy. Red Rose Skaters from pg 1 The Red Rose Figure Skating Club show will be presented on Saturday, Dec. 7, at 1 and 5 p.m. at the Lancaster Ice Rink, 371 Carerra Drive, Lancaster. The show will feature more than 50 skaters, including beginners, adults, and ice hockey skaters.

The storyline follows Campbell, played

by Courtney Meyers, a cheerleader at Truman High School, a suburban school with a preppy leaning. “(Truman) has a cheerleading squad that makes nationals every year,” explained Wolfer, who noted that there is a mean girl disguised as a nice girl in the character of Eva, played by Lauren King.

During the first act, Campbell learns that she has been redistricted to a different high school, Jackson High School. To her dismay, the city school has a dance squad rather than a cheerleading squad.

“She finds that everything is different,” said Wolfer. “Everything she thought she knew is turned upside down.” Bridget,

the mascot of the Truman cheerleading squad, played by Sophia Babar, is transferred to Jackson as well. Although the first act ends in disarray, according to Wolfer, the girls begin to learn that they have to work to get to know people and find out who they really are.

Act two focuses on confidence, with the students from Jackson High School beginning to encourage each other and build each other up. “They are figuring out how to move forward and recognize their goal is to win at accepting themselves and making themselves the best they can be,” said Wolfer.

The act will end with the song “Cross the Line,” which includes lyrics that explain that the students do not really know themselves until they cross a boundary in trying something they did not think they would be able to do. “They may have thought, ‘I am not good enough or strong enough to handle that,’” explained Wolfer. “They make that choice

(to cross the line), and they have to do it together.”

Wolfer noted that the Disney song “Lemonade Mouth” will be included along with songs from the musical “Bring It On.” Other characters in the show will include Danielle, played by Ellamay Cassidy; Kyler, played by Hannah Mencer; and Nautica, played by Livia Siefert. Other characters will include La Cienga, played

by Carmen Guzman; Skyler, played by Anna Mayers; and Steven/Randall, played

by Evan Bertz.

Wolfer skated with Disney on Ice for several years, and she has brought her professional experience to the choreography of the show.

Several vocalists will be spotlighted during the concert, including Shelby Swartley and David Harnish on “The Holly and the Ivy” and Bernie Linn on “O Holy Night.” Kristen Albert will be the featured vocalist on “The Sound of Music,” and Lois Good will be in the spotlight for “DoRe-Mi.” Carl Good will be the vocalist on “Edelweiss.”

Other familiar tunes in the presentation will include “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing,” “I Saw Three Ships,” and “What Child Is This?”

The nearly 50 choir members begin one-hour weekly rehearsals eight weeks prior to the concert. Clair creates a song book that includes all the song lyrics in large print with the pages decorated with artwork created by students at Conestoga Christian School in Morgantown.

According to Clair, each practice is an engaging experience. “It is more a journey than a practice. We have fun together,” he said. He noted that recently the wife of one singer noticed a change in her husband when practice ended. “She said that he had been very cantankerous when he came in to sing,” recalled Clair, who added that the woman said her husband’s mood was much improved at the end. “It was like turning a page,” said Clair.

Museum To Host Christmas With The Conductor Parties All aboard for the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania’s Christmas With the Conductor parties on Saturdays, Dec. 7 and 14. Registration forms are available at www.rrmuseumpa.org or at the museum, 300 Gap Road, Strasburg, during regular business hours.

During the events, the conductor will usher in guests for 45 minutes to an hour of holiday festivities. Each child will receive a souvenir train ticket that the conductor will punch as the child boards one of the museum’s historic railroad cars for a reading of a classic holiday story.

Youngsters will be able to create a seasonal take-home craft in Jack Frost Station, and they will receive small bags of special goodies.

While visitors are in the museum

during the holiday event, they will be invited to send a Santa Gram to the North Pole; visit with Santa Claus and the museum’s mascot, Catcher; and enjoy seasonal decorations and holiday music while surrounded by a worldclass collection of about 100 historic locomotives and railroad cars.

Christmas With the Conductor parties are scheduled at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Dec. 7 and 14. Parties are recommended for children age 3 and over, who must be accompanied by a parent or adult guardian. Space is limited, and advance registration is required. A per-child fee has been set for party attendance, and regular museum admission will also apply.

Reservations are available for groups of 15 or more.

All funds raised by the event will benefit the ministry of Woodcrest, a nonprofit retreat and camp center that serves more than 1,400 children each year. Camps run during June, July, and August. This year, the ninth event will be held at the retreat center, 225 Woodcrest Drive, Ephrata, on Fridays, Dec. 13 and 20, from 6 to 8 p.m. and on Saturdays, Dec. 14 and 21, from 5 to 8 p.m.

Adults and children who attend Journey to Bethlehem may participate in specific scenes leading up to and including Christ’s birth. As they travel with the characters from the Bible, participants will witness the angel’s visit to Mary and then walk to Bethlehem, where they will experience, along with Mary and Joseph, the disappointment of finding there is no room at the inn. The journey will also take attendees to a marketplace, where they may spend a shekel to purchase raisins or crackers, and then to a field, where they will gather with shepherds to hear the angels announce Christ’s birth. Finally, visitors will arrive at a stable to see the Christ Child in the manger. The path through Woodcrest will be lit by luminarias to guide guests on their way.

One script change this year will have the visitors meeting up with security along the path.

“Visitors will be confronted by a Roman guard, and they will be stopped by him,” said Fox. “There will be some drama there.”

As in the past, visitors will begin the journey by registering for the census and paying their “tax,” which is the admission fee.

Visitors will then ride by wagon to the area where the first scene will take place. A moderate amount of walking on uneven terrain along trails is required to complete the journey. Attendees are encouraged to dress warmly and wear appropriate waterresistant shoes on the hour-long trek. Although the event is family-friendly, strollers and those with mobility issues cannot be accommodated because of the rugged landscape.

A large number of people have attended Journey to Bethlehem over the eight years it has been held. Fox noted that in spite of some inclement weather on two of the event nights last year, more than 2,000 people attend-

Lancaster garnered the league’s Community Service Award for the franchise that has done the greatest work aiding those in need in its particular market. In addition, the Barnstormers’ general manager, Mike Reynolds, won the Joe Klein Executive of the Year honor for his work in growing the Barnstormers’ brand and attendance during his three seasons at the front office helm.

The Barnstormers’ organization was feted for several community outreaches. One in particular was the Christmas Tree Lane presented by the BCF Group and the Christmas Spirit Light Show that was pioneered at Clipper Magazine Stadium during the 2018 holiday season, generating over $29,000 for local charities. Also factored into the honor were Thanksgiving and Christmas programs centered at Clipper Magazine Stadium that feed the hungry through the holiday season. NEW SHIPMENT OF HERSHEY’S CANDY

St. Anne School in Lancaster held its fourth annual Third-Grade Historical Wax Museum on Nov. 4.

Third-graders portrayed historical figures, including Dr. Seuss, St. Michael the Archangel and Helen Keller, and presented memorized biographies of these people. The students had been working on this project for the last two months. It is the creation of third-grade teacher Karen Henry.

The students were each required to read a book from the Penguin Books “ Who Was?� series, which tells the stories of trailblazers, legends, innovators and creators. The students used this information to write a paragraph highlighting the important details of their subject’s life. They memorized their paragraph and also worked in class to create a background mural for their figure. Murals ranged from Benjamin Franklin’s kite in the air to a blue sky for Amelia Earhart.

With help from their parents, students created costumes to wear in the wax museum.

The wax museum was constructed in the gym, where students had a designated area with their mural behind them and a podium with a “play� button in front of them. Parents, faculty members and fellow students visited the museum. When a student’s play button was pushed, the student came to life and recited his or her memorized informational biography.

Home For The Holidays Set Home for the Holidays will take place at House of His Creation, 541 W. 28th Division Highway, Lititz, from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 5, and Friday, Dec. 6. Ken and Marcia Andersen’s antiques-filled home will be open to ticketholders on Dec. 7 as part of the Strasburg Holiday Home Tour. Proceeds will benefit the Strasburg Heritage Society. the 1790 Shroy House, 124 S. Decatur St., Strasburg, as well as to sustain the society’s operations. The society maintains an archive of postcards, pictures, documents, furniture, artifacts, and other items relating to Strasburg’s history, and it presents monthly lectures throughout the school year.

Nine homes and three churches are slated to be open as part of the Holiday Home Tour. The headquarters of the tour will be First Presbyterian Church of Strasburg, 101 S. Decatur St. A holiday market will be open there from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Lunch foods and other refreshments may be purchased

from the Girl Scouts there, and bids will be accepted in a silent auction for a sixperson dinner cooked Colonial-style in an open hearth.

The Mennonite Children’s Choir of Lancaster (MCCL) will present its Christmas Concert Series. The 150-voice choir will perform at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 5, at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, 10 Delp Road, Lancaster; at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 7, at Forest Hills Mennonite Church, 100 Quarry Road, Leola; and at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 8, at Highland Presbyterian Church, 500 E. Audiences will be treated to a Gospelinfused program of music from around the world and across time featuring soprano Sherrie Strange Pratt of New York City.

Ken and Marcia Andersen are newcomers to Pennsylvania, but it appears Marcia has been preparing for the move for most of their adult lives. Ticketholders may view Marcia’s love of antiques during the Strasburg Holiday Home Tour on Saturday, Dec. 7, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Marcia is a registered nurse, but she took 20 years off from the medical field while she raised their four children. During that time, she developed and honed an interest in antiques. The family was living in California at the time, but they eventually moved to Colorado, and then to Massachusetts. Through all of those moves, Marcia brought favorite pieces of furniture and décor with her. Many of those items now fill the Andersens’ home at 43 E. Main St., Strasburg.

Until the Andersens bought the house last year, the home had been in the same family for 100 years. In addition to a modest living room, the first floor contains a bedroom, a laundry room and bathroom, and a dining room that flows into the kitchen. The bedroom occupies the area that was once an ice cream and candy shop. Marcia noted that the house was originally a log cabin when it was built in 1770. Clapboard siding was installed in 1843. Additions were also made over the years, with several thick doorways between rooms suggesting that fact. Prior to serving as the ice cream parlor, the house was a telegraph office and, before

that, a potter’s studio.

Commercial signs throughout the home advertise businesses from Pennsylvania and other parts of the country.

Other signs of industry include a Stimpson scale in the dining room and a barber pole in the kitchen. Chalkboard paint on several closet doors in the bedrooms and cabinet doors in the kitchen are vestiges of the Andersens’ bed-and-breakfast in Massachusetts. They provide contrast to the white walls and ceilings that are present in nearly every room.

Among other interesting pieces, including an ancient work bench, Ken’s office contains a corner wardrobe that was made in Vermont, but the Andersens bought it in California.

Ticketholders will be able to view the first and second floors of the house, which will be decorated for Christmas. Visitors might want to count the many white Christmas stockings located throughout the home and take note of how many variations are possible when working with only one color. The stockings were an acquisition for the bed-and-breakfast.

The Andersens are excited about the Holiday Home Tour, as their bed-andbreakfast was part of a similar tour. “We had a blast,” Marcia recalled. “When Lorna (Mentzer) came to the door, she got half a sentence out before I said yes.”

Mentzer is a member of the Strasburg Heritage Society, which holds the tour as a fundraiser. She noted that the proceeds will be used to continue the restoration of

Choir Plans Holiday Concerts Financial Aid Workshop Slated The Voices of the Valley, a central Pennsylvania vocal ensemble, will present “Rejoice: The Concerts of Christmas.” The concerts will take place on Sunday, Dec. 1, at 4 p.m. at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, 10 Delp Road, Lancaster; Friday, Dec. 6, at 7:30 p.m. at Grace United Methodist Church, 309 Herman Ave., Lemoyne; and Saturday, Dec. 7, at 7:30 p.m. at Palm Lutheran Church, 11 W. Cherry St., Palmyra.

The concerts will feature chants, spirituals, carols, and lullabies from throughout the ages, including well-known songs of the season, new arrangements of classics, and some brand new melodies, as well as instrumental accompaniment.

Under the direction of Gregg R. Mauroni, Voices of the Valley will celebrate its 42nd season. The group began in the late 1970s by Lebanon Valley College graduates seeking to continue singing with their director, Dr. Pierce Getz. After Getz passed away, Mauroni was hired to lead the ensemble. Currently, 45 voices are accompanied by Ruth Sweigart and directed by Mauroni.

An adjunct professor at Penn State University Park, Mauroni is in his 11th season as artistic director and conductor of Voices of the Valley. He also conducts Essence of Joy, a Penn State choral ensemble, and is the assistant director of

While the concert at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church is free and open to the public, a freewill offering will be received during intermission, with 10% of the offering going to the rebuilding of Tanzania’s Busoka Lutheran Church, which was destroyed by wind shear. Busoka is a companion congregation of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church. There will also be a cookie walk on Saturday, Dec. 14, from 9 a.m. to noon to raise funds for the church’s international outreach in Busoka. Additionally, Christmas Eve services

are slated for 3 and 5 p.m. for family services and 7:30 and 10 p.m. for candlelight services. Rotay, Team Members Perform Community Service Stephen Rotay, president and owner of Rotay Capital Finance in Lancaster, and his team members recently participated as sponsors, exhibitors and educators at a variety of events this season to help nonprofit organizations and individuals and families in need throughout the region.

In October, Scott Charney, funding specialist for the company, spoke to high school

seniors enrolled in cabinet making and woodworking classes at the Lancaster County Career and Technology Center. Charney’s interactive discussion with t h e students focused on entrepreneurship while encouraging students to consider using the skill sets acquired from the career center to pursue their dreams and launch their own businesses. Charney took an adult education cabinet making class at the same school years ago and enjoys woodworking from recycled and repurposed wood, and other items. He has eight years of experience working in the construction industry and is a military veteran with the U.S. Army.

Art Exhibit To Feature Animal Portraits Bank Posts Teen Video Contest Artist Scott Higgins, who created drawings for the “We Love Our Pets” exhibit last April at Mulberry Art Studios in Lancaster, will return to the gallery for a solo show in December.

“Scott Higgins: It’s In Their Eyes,” which features charcoal animal portraits, will open on Dec. 6 with a First Friday reception from 5 to 9 p.m.

Higgins created the works with charcoal, each piece taking approximately 12 to 15 hours to create. The drawings look very realistic, but upon closer inspection viewers can see the artistic marks.

Higgins is a York-based artist who grew up in Lancaster and has been an artist practically his entire life. He said that he finds daily inspiration in his pets and how they make him feel. Knowing the special bond people have

Food Banks Receive Donated Turkeys Giant Food Stores donated 7,000 turkeys to 13 partner food banks located in communities served by the company.

An annual tradition, the 2019 turkey donation took place on Nov. 5 in advance of the holiday season to help provide Thanksgiving dinner for those in need.
