For Riley Fidler, Miss Lancaster Teen Is More Than a Title

There are those who would contend that we are all merely sums of our experiences.

Of all the lessons that Riley Fidler learned at the recent Miss Lancaster County Teen competition, among the most important were the ones about herself. What she discovered is that when you put yourself out there - when you simply be yourself - good things happen. It’s the type of experience that may be more valuable than any crown or scholarship or title.

“I think I learned I’m a lot stronger than I thought,” said Riley. “I didn’t think I was pageant material. I’m so glad I mustered up the courage to do it. The sisterhood is so genuine, and it was just a wonderful experience.”

Near the end of September, Riley took top honors in the teen division at

Cookies and Greens Go Together Like Generosity and Empathy

There’s this happening in the Conestoga Valley area that blurs the line between Thanksgiving and Christmas and combines the spirits of both holidays. Thankful individuals are inspired by what they have to give to others who have less.

The event is called Cookies and Greens.

“It’s not about the cookies. It’s not about the greens,” said Denise Fulmer, one of the organizers of the fundraiser. “It’s about sending a fellow sister out to preach the Gospel in other places in the world.”

Cavod Is Not Just Dreaming of White Christmas

Assisting others is an important way to utilize the talents we have been given. That message is never more meaningful than it is during this season of the year.

It’s that same message that makes “White Christmas” a beloved and inspirational holiday production.

“It’s a really popular show, especially at this time of the year,” said Jamie Hilton, the director of Cavod’s upcoming production of “White Christmas.” “I want people to come away with a sense of generosity. That’s what Christmas means to me and this community. It’s a time to share your gifts and talents.”

Cavod Performing Arts will present its interpretation of Irving Berlin’s classic Christmas musical “White Christmas” eight times over six days in early December at the 200-seat Cavod Theatre, 641 W. Main St., New Holland. The shows are scheduled for Friday, Dec. 5, at 6 p.m.; Saturday, Dec. 6, at 2 and 7 p.m.; Sunday, Dec. 7, at 4 p.m.; Friday, Dec. 12, at 6 p.m.; Saturday, Dec. 13, at 2 and 7 p.m.; and Sunday, Dec. 14, at 4 p.m.

Tickets can be purchased at https://cavod.org/events/ white-christmas and at the door if the performances are not sold out.

“The audience can expect everything they love about ‘White Christmas’ the movie,” said Hilton. “They’ll find great singers, iconic moments from the movie, fantastic dancing and

“I know what I’m supporting is helping other women,” she continued. “It’s almost like shopping small, but in a different way. With me, I’d buy the cookies and greens anyway, so it’s going to help women all across the world.”

This year’s edition of the annual Cookies and Greens event will be staged from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 6, at 80 Hellers Church Road, Leola, inside the decorated barn of one of the other

organizers, Barb Daegan. Proceeds from the fundraiser, which is free to attend, will benefit local missionary Tabitha Shilalo and her work to provide feminine hygiene products like washable and reusable LuoPads to women in developing countries through Unto, a ministry based in Mount Joy.

“There’s a lot of excitement (on the morning of the event),” said Fulmer. “We take the work out of Christmas cookies and arrange -

ments. It’s just a really great event for getting ready for the holidays. It helps people who don’t want to make cookies.”

Cookies and Greens will feature freshly cut evergreens that can be used for holiday decorating, as well as premade Christmas arrangements. There will also be gift items available for purchase.

“We want to give people the opportunity to feel like they’re helping,” said Fulmer, a resident of

upbeat numbers that get in your head for the holiday season.”

Cavod’s two-hour production of “White Christmas” is broken down into two acts, which are separated by a 15-minute intermission. The lobby and auditorium will open 45 minutes prior to each showtime.

The story is set at an inn in Vermont, and the musical’s plot revolves around veterans and successful entertainers Bob Wallace and Phil Davis; two beautiful singing sisters; and the group’s mission to help the inn’s owner, a former army commander. The show’s score features a number of memorable songs and dance routines.

“‘White Christmas’ is just really a beautiful, warm nostalgic Christmas show,” said Hilton, a resident of Strasburg who’s directing her third

Cavod production. “We want to tell that story and give people that warm, fuzzy feeling they’re looking for.”

“Our biggest challenge (has been), ‘How do we make it snow?’”continued

Hilton. “My favorite thing about working at Cavod is that it’s intimate and small. But when you think of a show as grandiose as ‘White Christmas,’ it’s really a wonderful challenge given the size of the cast.”

There are about 55 individuals involved with the production of “White Christmas.” The cast of 35 actors and actresses includes adults, teenagers and youths of varying experience levels from all across Lancaster County.

“There are a lot of familiar Cavod faces, and there are some newbies we’ve never worked with before,” said Hilton. “They are a delightful group of Lancaster people. They love Jesus.

They love Cavod. They love the arts. They work really hard. Some have a day job and come in on weekends. They’re just so much fun. We’re just having a really good time.”

“I think what they get out of this is a sense of community,” Hilton added. “We’ve been building this sense of community, and when we get to the performances, it gets shared with the audience.”

The production team for “White Christmas” was built in September, the same month that the initial auditions were conducted. Since rehearsals began in October, the cast and crew have been working on the musical for four hours on Fridays, six hours on Saturdays and three hours on Sundays.

“For shows like this, people give up their whole weekends to be a part of it,” said Hilton. “It is a huge commitment. We really love what we do. The best part of the performing arts to me is the community, the collaboration. Every day we’re telling stories. This is just a different way to tell a story. I love the shared memories. The community part is why we do this.”

“Cavod is a nonprofit theater,” added Hilton. “I think the money goes right back into more productions and into the community.”

Among Cavod’s upcoming shows are “Titanic, The Musical,” from Feb. 27 to March 8, and “Anastasia, The Musical, Youth Edition,” from April 10 to 12.

the 2026 Miss Lancaster County Scholarship Competition, held at Ephrata High School. A senior at Conestoga Valley High School, Riley accumulated the most total points from four different judged categories - a six-minute private interview, a talent presentation, evening wear and an onstage question, and lifestyle and fitness in active wear.

Also competing in the age 13 to 17 division were Addi Scheirer, Susannah Schelling, Alison Heisey, and Rae Leininger, all of Ephrata High School.

“Of the five of us, I truly believe any of us could’ve won,” said Riley. “It was kind of a stressful day because I was competing as I was learning about pageants, because I had never done it before. I have really big dreams in general. It’s a lot more than a beauty pageant; it’s a lot more about intelligence, your platform, and what people want to speak on.”

In addition to capturing the title of Miss Lancaster County Teen for a year, Riley earned an opportunity to compete in the Miss Pennsylvania Teen competition in York in June. Confident, personable and bright, Riley also won a pair of scholarships for garnering the highest scores from the seven judges for her response to the onstage question and the manner in which she handled the six-minute interview.

“We were all onstage, lined up and holding hands,” said Riley. “To announce the winner, (the officials) counted down the places. When I found out I won, I was screaming and crying and kind of freaking out. My family was so supportive. It was an incredible moment.”

Her involvement in the Miss Lancaster County Teen competition has afforded Riley an opportunity to formulate and develop a platform for shining a spotlight

on the societal issue of childhood trauma, something with which she has some personal experience. Within the Conestoga Valley School District, Riley assists with the Tiny Tunes program, which is designed to help 12- to 36-month-olds learn and play.

“I was pretty confident in my private interview,” said Riley. “I’ve been doing plays and acting since I was 6 years old, and I think my experience with theater and being onstage helped me. I think I’m a good communicator, or at least I try to be. I think something else that helped me is I went in without a lot of expectations. I didn’t have a lot

riding on it.”

Over the last 10 years, Riley has appeared in as many as 50 theatrical performances with local drama groups like Ephrata Performing Arts, Cavod Performing Arts, Servant Stage and Creative Pursuits. Riley’s future plans include college, and she is considering a major in musical theater and a minor in marketing and communications.

“I’ve applied to six schools, and I want to hear back from all of them (before I make a decision),” said Riley, who is also active in the high school chorus at Conestoga Valley. “I got into

West Chester (University), and a lot of my family members have gone there. I’m hoping to do some sort of remote job so I can still be performing. I enjoy

doing theater, and I’d like to do it professionally as long as I can. I’m also about communications and marketing, but theater really has my heart.”

Manheim Township.

The wide assortment of homemade cookies that will be available at the event includes oatmeal raisin, chocolate chip, coconut, sugar cookies and snickerdoodles, and there will also be chocolate-covered pretzels and chocolate-covered Ritz crackers. The treats are packaged and sold in one- and two-dozen amounts.

At last year’s fundraiser, supporters baked and donated a total of 124 dozen cookies, and the event sold out.

“It’s usually pretty steady throughout the day,” said Fulmer. “(The organizers) all come from different churches in Leola, New Holland, Denver and Lancaster. The reason we do it is Tabitha and her mission. One of my friends at my church was on the committee, and I said I’d like to help. That’s how I got involved. Some of the ladies go to Unto and help sew the pads.”

More than 100 individuals are expected to visit Cookies and Greens. The organizers are hoping to raise more than $5,000 for Shilalo’s mission of mercy to developing countries.

“I am more than happy to support (Shilalo) and her mission of good because I know I could never do it,” said Fulmer. “Her supporters want to help her make a difference. She also has monthly supporters. This helps her to continue doing this mission.”

Cookies and Greens was established in 2020. After a taking a year’s hiatus, the fundraiser has been staged every holiday season since.

“It’s brought in more and more cookies being donated and being sold,” said Fulmer. “I think we’re doing

a better job of getting the word out about it. Everybody’s got their part in it, and I think that’s helped grow it over the years.”

Through Unto, Shilalo has taken the LuoPad mission to “the toughest places” in the world, impoverished areas that are war torn or affected by natural disasters.

“I think part of what Tabitha does is tell women they’re loved and that Jesus loves them,” said Fulmer.

For additional information about Tabitha and her mission, go to www.give.cru.org/0900170.

“Sometimes when she’s spreading the Gospel, she’s in countries that don’t allow that. There’s some risk, but her heart is to make them feel loved and maybe a little more whole. These women hear about Jesus.”
