LCCS’ Growth Inspired by Generous Donors

Like any institution, Lancaster County Christian School (LCCS) is only as good as its people. The faith-based private school is what it is today because of its students, its teachers, its administrators and its donors.

For that, LCCS has a lot to be grateful for.

“We have to teach ourselves and our children that not everything comes without a thank you,” said Sandy Outlar, who’s been LCCS’ community relations coordinator for 15 years. “We can never forget that we have a lot to be grateful for. No one should miss the small voice inside that says, ‘Thank you so much.’ That’s coming from deep in my heart.”

One of the things that LCCS has to be thankful for is the financial support it receives through Pennsylvania’s Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) program, which

Aaron’s

Aaron’s Acres is committed to providing support for families affected by disabilities. While Aaron’s Acres has a variety of resources at its disposal, the local nonprofit also has the wherewithal to access resources it doesn’t possess - resources that are

available through organizations like the Lancaster Law Foundation.

“Aaron’s Acres recently received a grant that supports families in need of legal services as they plan for their children who have disabilities,” said Risa Paskoff, Aaron’s Acres’ executive director. “It was a great way to help families

There’s No Christmas Concert Like an Elvis Christmas Concert

“Well, it’s one for the money, two for the show. Three to get ready, now go, cat, go.”

In the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s, Elvis Presley was a cultural icon. Known as “The King of Rock ‘n’ Roll,” Elvis had an enormous influence on what pop music has become today.

No one ever stepped on his blue suede shoes.

But many have tried to impersonate “The King,” with some fine-tuning their craft remarkably. One of those is local impersonator Jeff Krick.

“He’s got such a big following,” said Beth Coblentz, the director of Terre Hill Area Senior Connections (THASC), of Krick. “It’s such a variety of people who listen to him. He’s going to be attracting so many people from so many different age groups. Elvis is so well known, and this impersonator is good at what he does. He performs very well.”

The house will be rocking when THASC hosts Elvis tribute artist Jeff Krick at St. John’s Center United Church of Christ, 432 Reading Road, East Earl, on Sunday, Nov. 23. Krick will be crooning, moving and looking like “The King” as he presents a combination of Elvis’ Christmas music and Elvis’ greatest hits.

The performance is free to attend, but a goodwill offering that will benefit THASC will be accepted.

“I’m excited to see him,” said

begin the challenging conversation of how to plan for their children’s futures, especially as the parents age. Lawyers gave of their time and met with our families for initial conversations. Funds from this grant are then available if families wish to continue the conversations with the attorneys.”

“The mission of the Lancaster Bar Association and the Lancaster Law Foundation is to advance justice in the community and enhance that feeling of community,” said Mackenzie Haines, the Lancaster Bar Association’s director of programs and community initiatives. “Fellowship and justice are just two of our core values, and they really sum up what we do. We want to be in the community helping people out.”

A philanthropic arm of the Lancaster Bar Association, the Lancaster Law Foundation conducted its Planning With a Purpose Clinic for families served by Aaron’s Acres

on Sept. 16 at Manor Church, 530 Central Manor Road, Lancaster. The three-hour event consisted of the Aaron’s Acres families meeting faceto-face and one-on-one with local attorneys for 30 minutes to discuss the legal challenges that can arise when family members are disabled.

The attorneys’ work was performed on a pro bono basis.

“The main goal was to give families peace of mind,” said Haines. “Oftentimes, it can be a daunting conversation to start. We were so happy to pair with Aaron’s Acres to get it started.”

A total of 10 families dealing with disabilities attended the Planning With a Purpose Clinic, and half of those families decided to have further legal discussions with lawyers. Portions of the costs of those future consultations will be funded through the grant that Aaron’s Acres obtained from the Lancaster Law Foundation.

Among the legal issues discussed

were guardianship, special needs trusts and financial and educational planning.

“Overall, it was a great meeting and a great environment,” said Haines. “Aaron’s Acres reached out to the foundation and told us they had families in need. The bar association asked attorneys to do the work pro bono, and they were happy to be there giving back.”

After Aaron’s Acres applied for the $3,000 grant, its request was reviewed and approved by a Lancaster Law Foundation committee.

Aaron’s Acres is headquartered at 1861 Charter Lane, Suite 114, Lancaster.

“We gave the grant to Aaron’s Acres for them to use at their discretion,” said Haines, “and that money covered some of the legal fees. (The legal clinic) spurred more conversations involving families’ futures. But for some, they weren’t quite ready to think about the future.”

Immigration Resource Center (PIRC). The grants awarded to those seven organizations were valued at $53,445.

“The main goal of the grants is the same as the Lancaster Law Foundation’s, which is to promote equality and expand justice across Lancaster County,” said Haines. “You can see that the clinic fits into a lot of those categories. The foundation’s executive board has a grant committee that collects grant requests, reviews them and makes decisions.”

The Lancaster Law Foundation was formed in 2002. Since 2020, the foundation has awarded $353,000 in grants.

“We’re well known in the legal community,” said Haines. “But outside of that, I don’t think people know about the work we’re doing. We’d like to do more, and anything we could do to expand in any way would be wonderful.”

The grant to Aaron’s Acres was one of seven that have been awarded to similar organizations by the Lancaster Law Foundation this year. Also receiving financial support were Lancaster city’s Bench Mark Program, the Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) program, Church World Service, MidPenn Legal Services, Tenfold and Pennsylvania

Located at 28 E. Orange St., Lancaster, the Lancaster Bar Association boasts nearly 800 members - lawyers, judges, legal professionals and law students.

“A lot of our lawyers are involved in the community,” said Haines. “Oftentimes, they’re looking to give back. They have so much expertise. Anytime they get a chance to go out into the community, they love that.”

allows local businesses and individuals to direct up to 90% of their state tax obligation to schools. Those local businesses and individuals will be the focus of LCCS’ Appreciation Breakfast, which will be served from 7:30 to 9 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 21, in the school’s student life center, located at 2390 New Holland Pike, Lancaster.

The event is free to attend, but

visitors are requested to register by calling the school office at 717-556-0711.

“I think there’ll be this feeling of effervescence,” said Outlar. “I really believe people’s hearts will be inspired and humbled hearing from students, colleagues and business partners. I think it’s inspiring just knowing you’re part of something good, helping to train young lives to the betterment of God’s glory. It’s that feeling when colleagues appreciate colleagues.”

Nutritionally, LCCS’ Appreciation Breakfast will consist of eggs, bacon, potatoes, a variety of pastries, orange juice, apple juice and coffee. But on a more spiritual level, the event will explore the ways in which the donors and EITC program impact the development of the school’s students.

That financial support doesn’t necessarily keep LCCS’ doors open, but it does allow for more opportunities to experience the type of education that the school provides. A little more than half of LCCS’ 317 families receive tuition aid, partly made possible through the EITC program.

“It plays a very significant role,” said Outlar. “There are many students who

Coblentz. “We’re trying to kick off the holiday season with a lively event. I think it’ll be helping us get into the Christmas spirit. It’s going to be a good time and a fun atmosphere.”

That Sunday evening’s festivities will begin with refreshments at 6 p.m. Krick will perform his Elvis numbers from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

“It’s not only about the Elvis fundraiser,” said Coblentz. “We want to further expand and reach out to other older adults. We want to bring in these connections. We want people to come and enjoy it. The holidays can be such a lonely time of the year.”

THASC officials are hoping that a couple hundred people will attend the first-time event.

“We’d like it to help our budget

and help with our programs for next year,” said Coblentz. “We’re self-sufficient. We’re trying to raise money for Terre Hill Area Senior Connections. My job is to bring in programs that seniors enjoy. We try to keep our programs cost efficient.”

THASC, which is housed inside of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 105 W. Main St., Terre Hill, is open Mondays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to noon. Among the activities and services offered at the center are conversation; coffee, breakfast foods and snacks; games; puzzles; and programs geared toward older adults.

On average, about 30 residents 60 and older from Terre Hill, East Earl, Ephrata, Leola, Denver, Stevens and Adamstown frequent THASC on Mondays and Thursdays.

“At the center, we stress connections and healthy living,” said Coblentz. “We create an environment

for seniors so they’re not at home by themselves, so they can be part of a community. We want the people who come to make it their own center. We want to provide more to the people who are there. When they come, we want them to feel welcome and safe.”

“We have a variety of people coming,” added Coblentz. “Some are wives and husbands. Some are widowers. Our goal is to bring them in and have them socialize. We’re wanting people to connect and serve in our community. We want them to live healthy lives. We don’t want them sitting at home feeling lonely. We want them to feel they belong.”

SINGING SPRING

A mission of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, THASC opened in January of this year. The ministry has gained momentum through programs like the upcoming Christmas with Elvis event.

“There’s a group of people who attend St. Paul’s, and they had a dream,” said Coblentz. “They wanted to find a way to minister to others. They prayed about it, and they realized there was a need to reach out to seniors in the Terre Hill area. We started with a soft opening in January. Once we started getting the programs, it just took off.”

can’t afford a private education, and this legislation made it possible. It’s one of the bipartisan issues that legislators don’t argue about.”

“I don’t think it’s a question of schools like LCCS existing or even thriving,” Outlar continued. “We’d be trying to raise money to help families afford it in other ways.”

About 75 people are expected to attend the breakfast, including 40 individuals or representatives of businesses that have supported or continue to support LCCS. The gathering will feature a keynote address titled “Building a Business While Being a Blessing in the Community” delivered by Ed Herr, the executive chairman of the board of Herr’s Foods and Snacks.

The breakfast will also include testimonials from representatives of Dutch-way Farm Markets, Liberty Employment Solutions of Manheim and E.K. Bare & Sons of Bird-in-Hand. LCCS head of school Nate Long will address the audience about the future of the school, and LCCS fourth-graders

will offer songs of praise.

from pg 2

“I felt it was more important to have a face-to-face thank you instead of a card,”said Outlar of the breakfast’s origin six years ago. “Each of (the donors) has a part in this educational institution. Now, we have more donors who are partners, and with the breakfast, we’re involving more students, students who are benefiting from the program.”

There are 535 students from prekindergarten through 12th grade currently enrolled at LCCS. The school employs 116 individuals, 64 of whom are faculty members.

LCCS was established through a merger of Lancaster Christian School and Living Word Academy in 2010.

“We’ve come a long way in the last five years,” said Outlar. “I don’t believe we’re in competition in any way with other schools, except for in sports. We all deliver education differently. I think there’s a very healthy and valuable interaction with other schools.”

The Strasburg Area Senior Citizens will hold the group’s monthly meeting on Wednesday, Nov. 19, at 1 p.m. at the Strasburg Fire Hall, 203 Jackson St., Strasburg. Following the meeting, the group will sign Christmas cards for the veterans hospital, with a goal of 600 cards. Refreshments will be served. Guests are welcome. There is a nominal registration fee at the door to cover the fire hall rental. Strasburg Seniors is a nonprofit organization chartered in 1966 for the benefit of area senior citizens age 50 and older.
