CV Soccer Falls in District Quarterfinal

Do or die, win or go home...there are many phrases for single elimination postseason games, and they all mean the same, win and advance or have your season end. For the boys’ soccer team, the 2-0 District quarterfinal loss to Warwick on October 29th stings more than a regular loss, not only did it end the Buckskins season, it did so just shy of qualifying for the PIAA playoffs.

“On the day, Warwick was better,” said head coach Dave Hartlaub, “They started fast and found half spaces in the heart of our defense. They cashed in on one of these moments early on and their team knew how to play with a lead.”

The early goal that Hartlaub mentioned came in the sixth minute where Drew Bassoff converted an Eli Yerger pass for a 1-0 lead. Warwick extended the lead to 2-0 in the 31st minute with Titus Layton scoring off a Frank Gelardi feed. Momentum started to shift in the second half with Jacob Carr (four saves) and the ‘Bucks defense keeping the Warriors from extending their lead, but CV was unable to capitalize on their opportunities in the second half.

“We put some balls into dangerous spaces and gave ourselves some opportunity, but never found the right space into the goal,” said Hartlaub.

Hartlaub added one final thought for the 2022 season, “As you can image, after the game it is difficult for us. But we will look back and know that we took great strides forward this season.”

CROSS COUNTRY

The cross-country season officially came to a close on October 29th with the Buckskins taking part in the District 3-3A Championships at Big Spring High School. The Lady ‘Bucks were one runner shy of a complete team while the boy’s contingent finished 26th in the team standings.

“The goal was to improve on their performance at the LL Meet,” said head coach Mark Amway of the nine runners and all nine completed that goal. The boy’s side led that charge.

“Three boys under 18:00 was a great way to finish the season,” said Amway. “All five boys are returning next year.”

Timothy Gitonga secured the top boys finish, his 17:22.7 placing him 88th in the 233-member 3A field. Josh Yoder was up next, taking 122nd place with a 17:46.3 with Joey Castronova completing the under-18 trio with a time of 17:57.9, good enough for 138th. Carson Miller (178th - 18:28.1) and Micah Kao (188th - 18:35.3) rounded out the five boys.

Seana Dougherty fronted the quartet of Lady Buckskins, taking 75th with a time of 21:08.2. The remaining three runners were grouped closer together starting with Kylee Antrim and her 166th place time of 22:48.0. Belle Marie Alston was up next, taking 174th with a time of 23:01.2 while Abigail Phillips finished with a time of 23:37.9, good enough for 190th.

FOOTBALL

The saying goes ‘a win is a win’ but what happens when said win is a sweet victory in the last week of the regular season, moving your team to 5-5, but it does not push you into the postseason as you had hoped. Such is the dilemma for the CV gridiron gang. Their 35-0 pasting of Muhlenberg on October 28th moved the Buckskins to 5-5 but still three spots short of the 5A postseason bracket.

Conestoga Valley ran wild against the Muhl’s, racking up 306 rushing yards with just 70 coming through the air. That gave CV a 376-233 edge in total yards and helps explain the 35-0 final. Nick Tran powered the ground game, going for 138 yards and two scores on just nine carries and adding one reception for 10 yards. Kyle Jankowski accounted for the remaining 60 receiving yards, turning his one catch into a TD. Ish Camacho was on the passing end of that toss while adding 106 yards and a score on the ground. Jayden Johnson finished with one carry, covering 19 yards for a touchdown.
