To Return To Vietnam

David Griffith, director of Conestoga Valley High School’s (CVHS) fall production of “King Lear,” is acutely aware of the learning experience he is offering students. “The challenges in the play (for the students) are playing characters that are a young new generation … taking on the mantle of leadership when people have been in power for decades,” said Griffith. “They are trying to find out how one can be a leader and what the ethical and moral requirements for good leadership are.” CVHS will present “King Lear” at the school, 2110 Horseshoe Road, Lancaster, on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 15 and 16, at 7 p.m. and on Sunday, Nov. 17, at 2 p.m. Griffith noted that the show is an abridged version that will run less than two and a half hours. At Garden Spot High School (GSHS), teacher Lei Williams teaches English as a second language. Williams was born in Vietnam, and she has relatives there. In 2015, Williams first organized for a group of GSHS students to visit Vietnam. In the summer of 2019, she led a second group of students to the country. In May 2019, before the second trip, a group from Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 1008 gave a presentation at GSHS. The organization’s educational committee visits nearly 20 middle and high schools a year, giving as many as 30 living history presentations. “Sometimes we have lunch, and teachers join us,” said Douglas Kelly, president of the chapter. During lunch in May, Williams talked to the veterans and asked if anyone in the group would See Veterans pg 3

CVHS Thespians Take On “King Lear” Veterans Make Plan

Workers prepare to remove a 1948 Studebaker Champion from the second floor of a barn located on Old Philadelphia Pike in Bridgeport. Pieter Hegeman, who recently purchased the car, had it moved from the perch, where it has rested since 1965, on Aug. 23. By Ann Mead Ash

On a rainy Friday morning at the end of August, Mary Henning stood outside the home where she grew up more than 50 years ago on Old Philadelphia Pike in the Bridgeport area. “There was an

empty field here, and we had an extensive garden,” said Mary of the farm her parents bought in 1960. “My dad learned the electrical trade, but he never left the farm,” she added, recalling that she and her four siblings spent their summer days doing chores. See Studebaker pg 6

The members of CBJO have been playing together for five years, and the group wanted to hold a concert for veterans at Highland Presbyterian Church, which serves as the band’s home base. “Everything came into place to

have the Sweethearts (join us),” said a smiling Chesnutt. Anyone is welcome to attend the free concert, which will be held at Highland, See Special Concert pg 5
