Mural Illustrates Organization’s Power to Turn Houses Into Homes BY JEFF FALK
Murals are so much more than oversized paintings. Colorful, loud and proud, murals are the ultimate in visual storytelling. Lancaster Lebanon Habitat for Humanity has a great big story to tell. “Murals are a great way to celebrate the community in a positive way and add some color to your day,” said Mike Andrelczyk, the communications and volunteer manager for the organization. “This mural is a celebration of community, and the Lancaster Habitat ReStore is a place where the community can come together to support our mission of building homes, community and hope, just by shopping and getting a great deal. This mural is really special for a lot of reasons, but one of the best parts is that it illuminates how Habitat families work hard to make their dream of homeownership a reality, and how people from all walks of life come together to make our community a better place and build a brighter future.” In late August, L ancaster Lebanon Habitat for Humanity’s ReStore, which is located at 1061 Manheim Pike, Lancaster, unveiled a 48-foot-by-17-foot mural depicting and commemorating its special journey of community leadership. The mural also recognized the organization’s 40 years of making Lancaster and Lebanon better places to live. The 90-minute unveiling event drew dozens of public officials,

Freedom from pg 1 Located at 207 E. Main S t ., Ne w Holland, the NHAHS museum’s newest exhibit features a smaller but exact replica of the famous Liberty Bell, one that’s just about as historically significant to the ELANCO area. The Liberty Bell replica was donated to NHAHS by M&T Bank on March 16 of this year, after it had been commissioned to be built by New Holland Farmers National Bank in 1973 to commemorate America’s bicentennial. The replica of the Liberty Bell can be viewed during the NHAHS muse um’s regular hours of operation, Thursdays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The bell can also be viewed by special appointment, which can be set up by calling 717-354-2049. “We have a great heritage here,” said Ressler. “We are encouraging people - adults, kids, families - to visit the museum and ring the bell. It doesn’t have the big, booming, resonate sound that the original must have had to be heard all over Philadelphia, but it has a loud and piercing sound that gets people’s attention. It sounds like a high-quality ship’s bell.” T he or ig inal Liber ty Bell measures about three feet and three inches from the top of its crown to the bottom lip, while New Holland’s replica is about half that length. Both bells are made of bronze, while the original Liberty Bell weighs about 2,080 pounds and the replica checks in at about one-fourth of that total. “Nearly every detail of the original bell was included in the replica, including the names of the makers, the Scripture passage from Leviticus, and, of course, the famous and iconic crack,”

said Ressler. “During the bicentennial, the (replica) bell did a lot of traveling. It visited every elementary school in the Eastern Lancaster County School District, as well as Garden Spot High School. It was used by the New Holland Band during the bicentennial performance of John Philip Sousa’s famous march, ‘Liberty Bell.’” “ Then it returned to the New Holland Farmers National Bank, where it was on display,” continued Ressler. “Sadly, it remained silent but stayed in the bank even as the bank changed ow nership and names several times. That silence ended this past July when the New Holland Band again featured it in Sousa’s great march.” The New Holland replica of the Liberty Bell is one of just hundreds of items housed and on display at NHAHS’ museum. “I don’t have a count (on the exact number of items), but I can tell you we are just about busting at the seams,” said Ressler, a resident of New Holland. “We are taking great care to only accept items and archival information - photographs, articles, books - that directly relate to New Holland and the surrounding area. With the things that we have, we can really tell the story of the people of our area. “We are working hard to make sure more and m o re p e o p l e d i s c o v e r the museum,” continued Ressler. “One of the comments we often hear from visitors is ‘I never knew this was here.’ We have local people visit as well as folks from out of town.” For additional information, go to www.nh historical.com.

SINGING SPRING FOODS Golden Supreme, Honey Crisp & Gala Apples, Pineapples, Oranges, Lemons, Grapefruit
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
On a sunny afternoon in April 2010, Betsy Shank was mowing the grass in front of her home in Millersville. After seeing what initially appeared to be a dead baby squirrel, Shank cut the engine and rushed to take a closer look. The little kit was still alive, so Shank raced to her computer and searched for advice on how to best help the animal. Sixteen years later, Shank has dedicated her life to rescuing local wildlife as the founder and executive director of Acorn Acres Wildlife Rehabilitation. Located at 2100 Stone Mill Road in Lancaster, Acorn Acres Wildlife Rehabilitation is a nonprofit organization that rehabilitates native prey species and Virginia opossums, in addition to educating the community on the animals it serves. At the facility, Shank and a team of volunteers provide medical stabilization, nutrition and housing for injured animals such as squirrels, rabbits and groundhogs to help them recover and return to the wild with minimal human imprinting. After severe storms and a tornado tore through Lancaster County in August, local residents began sifting through debris to find the extent of the damage and clean up their yards. Many people discovered they weren’t the only ones affected by the destructive weather; hundreds of ani-

mals were left injured or displaced in the storm’s wake, including mothers that left behind nests of their young. Within a few days, the lobby of Acorn Acres Wildlife Rehabilitation was packed with leaf-covered locals who halted their storm cleanup to bring baby rabbits, squirrels and mice in need of care. Although the rehabilitation facility had just closed its intake office, Shank contacted Red Creek Wildlife Center in Schuylkill Haven as soon as she heard a major storm was about to hit the county. “I said ‘Hey, I’m closed, but trees and houses are going to come down. People aren’t going to drive over an hour to bring these animals to you,’” Shank said. “They said if I took the animals in and got them stabilized, I could transfer them to Red Creek. So we just opened the doors.” Within two days, Acorn
Acres Wildlife Rehabilitation took in more than 100 animals affected by the storm. Assisted by a team of volunteers, Shank and her husband, David Aichele, stabilized as many of the animals as they could before transferring them to Red Creek Wildlife Center. Any of the rescues still in need of medical attention remained at Acorn Acres Wildlife Rehabilitation to recover. “People were in the middle of cleaning up what happened to their homes, but they were compassionate enough to prioritize helping these baby animals. It was just amazing,” said Aichele, Shank’s righthand man and steadfast supporter who’s helped with everything from construction projects to emergency

For veterans, navigating all of the resources available in the community can be a complicated process. American Legion Post 185 in Mount Joy wants to help. The Legion will host a Veterans Benefit Information Session at Trinity Lutheran Church, 47 W. Main St., Mount Joy, on Thursday, Nov. 5, from 6 to 8 p.m. It will feature representatives from 12 agencies that suppor t veterans and their care and recovery. Although the event will take place in Mount Joy, it’s open to all veterans and their caregivers throughout Lancaster County. “If you are a veteran or have a veteran family member, this event will br ing many resources together for you to leverage at your fingertips,” said Stacey Miller, service officer for Post 185. “The needs of veterans vary, and these organizations can help you navigate to find the best care and programs available for the veteran and their caregiver.” With so many organizations offering different types of assistance, finding the right resource can be a challenge for veterans and their families. The information session will give attendees an opportunity to learn about services they may not know are available, ask questions about their individual circumstances and connect directly with people who can guide them through the process. Caregivers can also benefit from learning about programs designed to help them navigate

the challenges of caring for a veteran. By bringing representatives from multiple agencies together, the Legion hopes to make it easier for veterans to identify their needs and find the appropriate next steps. Federal, state and local agencies will attend the program. Participants will include a Veterans Affairs (VA) Service Officer, who will help with VA claims processing; VA Benefits Administration, which will provide information on how to register with t h e VA ; t h e B u i l d i n g Br idges Found ation, which will highlight its equine therapy program; Sheetz Funeral Home, which will help attendees understand veteran burial benefits; and Team Jennifer Cahill Charities, which is focused on supporting female veterans. The event will be informal and held in the church fellowship hall, enabling attendees to network with other veterans, ask questions and gain resources they seek. “ T here will be light refreshments available for everyone to enjoy as they build their community of support,” Miller said. Miller hopes attendees will take the first step toward getting the support needed and learning about the resources available to them in the community, noting that sometimes all it takes is one conversation with the right person to open the doors to help. No registration is required to attend the drop-in event. For more information or any questions, contact Miller at ALPOST185SO@gmail .com or 717-808-6444.

Activity + Engagement = Purpose. It’s a simple equation that produces health and happiness for older adults. It’s a formula that Terre Hill Area Senior Connections (THASC) promotes and executes regularly and consistently. “We hear all the time, ‘I sit at home and do nothing ,’ (or) ‘My husband just died and I need to get out and meet other people,’” said David Kling, the president of the board of directors for THASC. “It’s those connections. It’s people breaking bread t o g e t h e r . I t ’s p e o p l e talking to one another. It may just be somebody sitting down and having a cup of coffee and a conversation. T hat ’s what we’re offering.” A relatively new senior center located in Terre Hill, THASC is holding a fundraiser to support its purpose-filled work. At 7 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 7, musical ar tist Leroy Stoltzfus will perform a benefit concert in the sanctuary at St. John’s Center United Church of Christ, 432 Reading Road, East Earl. Tickets for the country and gospel performance can be purchased at the door. “It will definitely have a worship feel to it,” said Kling. “(Leroy Stoltzfus)
writes a lot of his own m u s i c . W h e n yo u m i x country and gospel, you get lively music.” Stoltzfus ’ 90-minute performance will be broken down into a pair of 45-minute sets divided by a 15-minute intermission. More than 200 individuals are expected to attend, some of whom are affiliated with THA SC, as well as family members and friends. Event organizers are hoping to raise $3,500, money that will benefit new exercise programs at THASC, like a drumming program that employs weighted drumsticks and a “bingo-cise” program that combines the game of bingo with exercise. “ We do have a health element to our program,” said Kling. “We start our days with chair exercise set to music, and one of the reasons is because older adults sometimes have stability issues. Older adults love music. We are also working on mental and emo t ional health.” THASC, which is situated at 105 W. Main St., Terre Hill, is open from 9 a.m. to noon on Mondays and Thursdays, though officials are hoping to add an hour of operation to each day. In addition to the exercise programs, T HA SC, which is operated by activities director

Lancaster Bible College (LBC) will hold its annual Makers Market from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 14. Vendor space is now full, with nearly 40 crafters and creators set to offer handmade goods such as original artworks, wood and home décor, jewelry, hand-lettered cards and signs, macramé and crocheted items, prints and canvases, bags, and natural products. The Birdie’s Perch BBQ & Catering food truck will be on-site with breakfast and lunch options for purchase. Other vendors will offer baked goods and sourdough bread. Admission and parking are free.
