ou can always tell what’s on a person’s heart and in his or her soul by their actions. Mikayla Millisock is a freshman baton twirler with the Kutztown University Marching Unit (KUMU). “During my senior year in high school, I was back and forth about whether to twirl in college or just get accustomed to college life,” said Millisock. “At the last minute, I really realized I wanted to twirl. Now, I’m glad I did. I’m having so much fun. “When I started in the marching unit, it got me in the loop,” continued Millisock. “I had friends even before I got to meet people in my classes. For me, I couldn’t let it go.” For Millisock, a 2026 graduate of Conestoga Valley High School, baton twirling has been both a continuing pursuit of a passion and a vehicle for passage into the next phase of her life. The personal growth has been purely organic. “I’m actually having a good time,” said Millisock. “I’m enjoying college. The marching band is a fun thing to do. I’m doing well in my classes, and I’m making friends. I’m being here for myself.” Millisock is one of four twirlers on the Marching Bears’ majorette line. Her role is to exude spirit, move to the music and inspire those around her,

They ’re colleagues and cohorts. They share common beliefs and a common bond. They back up their beliefs with actions, and they consistently go above and beyond. Ken McCombs and Jarrett Falduts are a coalition, or brother Lions. “Jarrett is a very outgoing person,” said McCombs. “He
takes his friendships very seriously. He looks you in the eye when he talks to you, he listens and asks follow-up questions. He’s very giving, and he’s always looking for ways to help other people.” Dur ing separate ceremonies this summer, both Falduts and McCombs were presented with the prestigious Melvin Jones Fellowship Award by the Bareville,

Through his stage productions of “Box Out Bullying,” Jeremy Rubenstein has shared his message about bullying across the country and positively impacted thousands of lives. Now, it seems that the next logical step in Rubenstein’s 18-year journey of inspiration would be to bring that message home to Lancaster County. “I think this is something that everybody has a story with,” said Rubenstein, who has backgrounds in education, theater and basketball. “They’ve been bullied, they’ve witnessed bullying or they’ve (been bullies) themselves. Children are going to mimic the people they love. With something as serious as bullying, we can’t have mixed messages. One of the messages we teach is that even people who exhibit bullying behavior need help too. We want to create empathy. This is something that’s full of hope.” Rubenstein and his small traveling troupe, which includes two versatile actors, present versions of “Box Out Bullying” about 300 times annually, in places like California, New York City, New Jersey, Connecticut, Utah and Nashville. The 45-minute educational and entertaining presentations are tailored to their audiences and performed at elementary schools, middle schools, theaters, performing arts centers and community centers. But “Box Out Bullying” has only been staged a handful of times in Lancaster County, most recently See Bullying pg 2

in East Earl in September of 2024. “Not as many as I’d like,” said Rubenstein, when asked about the number of times his message has been presented locally. “The issues kids are facing here in Lancaster aren’t unique. But the cool thing is that the solutions are the same. We’d love to do more shows in Lancaster. “Do people know about this?” added Rubenstein. “We could definitely do a better job of letting people know about this. I’m very careful about the product we put forward. These are kids; they’re very impressionable. I wish they did know about me. People who have us once keeping on booking us year after year.” The stage presentations of “Box Out Bullying” revolve around characters and cousins Tom and Jerry and are designed to identify what constitutes bullying and what doesn’t. The message is clear, but room is left for creative interpretation. “There’s a script, and the plot follows the trials and tribulations of Tom and Jerry,” said Rubenstein. “There’s no fourth wall in the show, and when the actors come out, they’re continuously interacting with the audience. There’s a box in the middle of the stage; it has all the answers to bullying inside of it, but it’s locked. With each lesson learned,
a lock pops off the box. When the audience figures it out, the box will open and inside is the answer. “You’ve got to see the show to find out the answer,” Rubenstein continued. “It’s a very big box, but the answer is very small, and it’s been in front of the audience the whole time. There’s a difference between accidents and conflicts and bullying. We want to give students different tools while teaching them grit and resilience.” Rubenstein is a 2002 graduate of Manheim Township and currently resides in Manheim Township with his growing family. In 2025, Rubenstein received the Manheim Township School District’s Distinguished Alumni award. “We know that bullying doesn’t just affect the school but also the community,” said Rubenstein. “When I started this in 2008, bullying might have been just a whisper. People liked that it was researchbased. Now, we are addressing this for the high school level. We’re developing new curriculum. We’re trying to build on this even more. We’d like to be well known. I’m very optimistic with how this is going. The message is there is hope. “This is still a local story,” Rubenstein concluded. For additional information, go to www.boxoutbullying.com.

Twirl Girl from pg 1 one where I’m juggling three batons at one time. “I think something people don’t know about twirling is that it’s very demanding,” she added. “It takes a lot of stamina and endurance. It’s a lot harder than it looks. I put in the work, and I put in the hours. It takes a lot of time and a lot of repetition, and now I think I’m a pretty good twirler.” Millisock has been twirling a baton since she was 9, and she developed her skills at Ab-Salute Twirling in Brownstown. At Conestoga Valley High School, she was the band’s feature twirler for five years and served as its drum major during her junior and senior years. “There are some things to look forward to,” said Millisock. “In college, everybody gets an equal chance at what they get. I definitely would like to be the feature twirler next year.”

I want to give them the biggest personality I can and project as much as I can. Being on the field is like an adrenaline rush.” During KUMU shows, Millisock is performing hundreds of movements, twirls, throws and baton tricks of varying degrees of difficulty. It’s a routine that requires athleticism, hand-eye coordination, repetition and focus. “It’s not something you think about,” said Millisock. “Once you start the routine, you just do it. We throw a lot. We toss and exchange with one another. My favorite tricks are the bigger tricks. In one of them, there are two batons and they are both in the air at one time. There’s another

We’re twirling all the time, and we try to show some sass. My goal when I’m performing is to make sure other people are having fun as well.” KUMU performs about eight times in the fall, including at all of Kutztown’s home football games. At each home contest, Millisock and the band perform before kickoff, at halftime and following the conclusion of the game. “When we make our show, we choreograph to the music,” said Millisock. “It helps me get into my role. They’re all really fun songs to move to. The band is amazing, and I love twirling to music. It gives us room to grow and be
