LCHS Holds Homecoming

n Oct. 16, Lancaster Catholic High School (LCHS) held its annual homecoming celebration. The 2020 homecoming queen, Daica Perez, was crowned by 2019 queen Kat Sahd during halftime of the varsity football game against Juniata High School.

The 10 LCHS homecoming queen candidates were Elizabeth Bomberger, Lauren Brommer, Ella Cassidy, Joanne Cybulski, Cecilia Deel, Gabrielle Kambourgolos, Raina McAnally, Erin Mohr, Daica Perez, and Sheridan Riva.

Elizabeth is the daughter of Steve and Cindy Bomberger of Lancaster.

At school, Elizabeth is a member of National Honor Society (NHS), Spanish National Honor Society (SNHS), Student Ambassadors, Respect Life Club, Garden Club, Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), Aevidum, Link Crew, MiniTHON, Fellowship Committee, and Women in Business. She plays lacrosse and runs cross-country.

Joanne is the daughter of Bob and Suzanne Cybulski of Leola. At school, she is captain of the dance team and plays varsity girls’ soccer.

She is a member of NHS, SNHS, Respect Life Club, Aevidum, Link Crew, Student Ambassadors, Service Committee, and Fellowship Committee. Outside school, she is a member of the youth group at St. John Neumann. After graduation, she intends to attend college to major in computer science.

Cecilia, of Lititz, is the daughter of Jarrod Deel and Jane Smith. At school, Cecilia is a member of NHS, SNHS, FBLA, Aevidum, Garden Club, Equality for All, Mini-THON, and Women in Business. She plays field hockey. Outside school, she is an altar server at Our Mother of Perpetual Help, where she is pianist for the youth choir. After graduation, she plans to attend college.

and day-to-day employee management. “She could never have done it without him, and he would not have done it without her,” recalled Charlie Engle, President of EPC. After Alvin Engle passed, Pauline decided to continue the family business with her children, who all agreed that they should pursue their parents’ dream. Before Alvin’s death, plans had already been drawn up for a new building where the company could expand. Two years after he passed, the family moved into their new facility on West Main Street. Later, a large

production facility was added in West Hempfield, Lancaster County.

While Pauline may not have imagined that the business would become what it did, her children had plans for further growth. “Even my father … I don’t think he ever thought that we would go from seven people to 400 employees at the high point,” Charlie said.

She was proud of the company’s success, but even more so that all three of her children became actively involved in the business, each having at least one child who has chosen a career with EPC. Audrey, the eldest Engle sibling, served as EPC’s treasurer until her retirement one year prior to her passing in 2018.

Whether in business or on family vacations, focus on family was paramount to Pauline. She loved spending vacations with her siblings, her children, and her grandchildren at the beach, in Potter County, or at their cabin along the Susquehanna.

Besides family, relationships with friends were also important, as she entertained and

traveled with them often.

When asked how he thought his mother would want to be remembered, without hesitation Dennis Engle, EPC Vice President, said, “For her strong faith.” Pauline was a member of Mount Calvary Church in Elizabethtown and was active singing in the choir and teaching Sunday school.

She also taught Good News Club in her home. Expanding upon his mother’s Christian faith, Charlie reflected, “She would often say, ‘We have been blessed. It wasn’t just us; it was with God’s help.’” As a result, she gave back and supported many organizations in the community and beyond.

Her example was the benchmark from which the Engle children carried on the business, and now the third generation draws from their grandmother’s tenacity and unwavering faith.

A memorial service honoring Pauline’s life was held at Mount Calvary Church on October 4, 2020, where the family shared fond memories of their mother, grandmother, and sister.

Pauline H. Engle, 94, formerly of Mount Joy, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Sunday, September 20, 2020, at Pleasant View Retirement Community. Born in Maytown, she was the daughter of the late Harry E. and Ada N. (Fridy) Hershey. Pauline was the wife of Alvin S. Engle, who passed away on June 10, 1971.

Pauline was a graduate of the former East Donegal Township High School class of 1943. She and her husband, Alvin, co-founded Engle Printing in 1954 and Publishing in 1959. After Alvin’s death, Pauline and her children continued the business in which she was active until her retirement in 2009. Pauline is survived by two sons, Charles Engle, husband of Kathleen of Mount Joy, and Dennis Engle, husband of Lynn of Lititz; nine grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Harry Hershey, husband of Joan of Brethren Village, and John Hershey, husband of Mable of Marietta.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Audrey Rutt, and two brothers, Robert and Charles Hershey.

When Alvin and Pauline founded Engle Printing, it was undoubtedly a partnership.

Alvin was a quiet, hardworking businessman who took care of planning, pricing, and production, while Pauline, more outgoing, did the hiring

Auditions, which were open to the community, were held at the end of August. Morales said the cast of 30 will include two adults this year, who will portray Ma and Pa Winters.

Ma Winters will be played by Kelly Manana, and Pa Winters will be played by David Spolum.

“This year, we are adding a sweet shop, which will be brand new,” reported Morales.

“In the sweet shop we have a baker and little gingerbreads played by 5- to7-year-olds. We have hot chocolate and gumdrops and peppermints (as well).” Other scenes include a snow blizzard and a sequence with choir dancers.

“Wonder” sold out when it was introduced at Cavod in 2019. “We are creating a new tradition for Cavod and the community,” said Morales, who noted that through the show she wanted to provide New Holland with another outlet to experience the arts.

“It’s been a really fun process,” she said.

Author Shares His Faith Journey In New Book

“My goal was to share my faith and help others with theirs,” stated Jim Weagley when explaining why he decided to write his newly released book, “Bet on the Turtle (My Long, Slow Journey of Faith).” “I really believe that at some point everyone wrestles with faith. Everyone - just by our nature - wants answers about why we are here, what we do with the time we have and what comes after this.”

Weagley, a resident of Atglen and a first-time author, describes the book as a memoir and statement of faith. “I was raised in a devout Catholic family and was blessed to experience a wonderful childhood.

Sadly, when I was 14, my father suffered a brain aneurysm, resulting in a disability,” he said. “We were angry at God and could not understand how He could have let this happen to our family. Unfortunately, we turned away from our faith

and the church community. With the help of friends, the benefit of numerous trials and tribulations and the grace of God, I managed to rediscover my faith.”

Weagley, whose background is in sports medicine, said he never expected to write a book but felt compelled to do so after retirement.

“When I retired, I knew I had more time; I prayed and it came back loud and clear that is what I need to be doing,” said Weagley. “(Until recently), I thought reading and writing

were a necessary evil. I now enjoy reading, and writing was very therapeutic, and I was very happy I did it, but it was nothing I planned to do.”

In the first part of the book, Weagley talks about his childhood memories in a Christian school and his church experiences, as well as his father’s injury and its impact on the family. In the second part of the book, “Reason to Believe,” Weagley, who describes himself as a very cynical person, shares scientific, historical and biblical evidence to support his belief in God. “Obviously, the first part of the book is my story that I wanted to share, so it wasn’t difficult to do,” he noted. “The other part is where I took a step back and thought about what were the most compelling reasons for someone to believe and what worked for me. I thought I needed to be thorough and objective. I read a lot of books and referenced the Bible and spoke to a lot of people.”

“I think the second part is as interesting as the first, even more so. It is more practical, and I keep a conversational approach to it,” he said, adding, “The chapters are not long, so it’s an easy read.”

Weagley, who attends Mission Church in Lancaster, started writing the book in December 2018 and finished it in May 2019. His book was published after several rejections. “I (found) someone willing to take a chance on a first-time author. I feel very fortunate,” he shared.

I thought I needed to be thorough and objective. I read a lot of books and referenced the Bible and spoke to a lot of people.”

“I think the second part is as interesting as the first, even more so. It is more practical, and I keep a conversational approach to it,” he said, adding, “The chapters are not long, so it’s an easy read.”

Weagley, who attends Mission Church in Lancaster, started writing the book in December 2018 and finished it in May 2019. His book was published after several rejections. “I (found) someone willing to take a chance on a first-time author. I feel very fortunate,” he shared.
