Church Plans Second Trunk Or Treat By Ann Mead Ash

Before New Life Assembly of God organized its first Trunk or Treat in 2018, church members thought about what kind of event would reach out to local residents. “We wanted (an event) just for the (local) community … to give back to the community and to be a part of what’s going on around here,” said Julie Capaldi, who serves as children’s pastor. “We wanted to get to know (people) and give them a chance to know us.” Capaldi reported that response to the event was positive. “We had beautiful weather. It was wonderful,” she recalled, noting that about 200 area residents came out to relax and chat. Capaldi is hoping for another nice evening when the church holds its second Trunk or Treat at 1991 Old Philadelphia Pike, Lancaster, on

Thursday, Oct. 31, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. “Last year, we had 21 trunks, and this year, we hope to have more than 25,” said Capaldi, who explained that each vehicle trunk will have its own positive theme. “It could be biblical, a superhero (theme), or sports,” she said. “Last year, we had an Eagles trunk and a Penn State trunk, and we had Captain America. He will definitely be there (again).” In addition to showing off their decorations, trunk owners will give out candy when attendees visit. Additional free food will include pretzels and water. According to Capaldi, each visitor who fills out a registration card will be entered to win a “trunk” prize, which will be a gift basket of goodies. Capaldi said that the church has also arranged for a member of the East Lampeter Police Department to be available to talk to visitors. The Lafayette Fire See Trunk Or Treat pg 2

Bridge Dedicated To Fallen Soldier By Ann Mead Ash

Some time ago, Rep. Keith Greiner, a Conestoga Valley High School (CVHS) graduate, was at a meeting attended by Phil Hursh and Harry Wink. The three discussed a memorial for Sgt. Melvin Wink, who grew up and resided in West Earl Township, and was the only CVHS graduate killed while serving in Vietnam. The conversation led to Greiner talking to the Pennsylvania state transportation committee in Harrisburg about the possibility of refurbishing an aging bridge that spanned the Conestoga River between Brownstown and Farmersville in West Earl Township and dedicating the newly refurbished structure to Wink’s service. Greiner introduced See Bridge pg 2

Rep. Keith Greiner spoke at the new Sergeant Melvin R. Wink Memorial Bridge a few days before it opened. The bridge was dedicated to Wink in honor of his service in Vietnam.
