Andora Is Steps to Success’ Right Back Trunk or Treat Is Must-Attend Where It Started From Community Event BY GEORGE DEIBEL

ecause it provides a valuable service, Steps to Success is an essential member of the community. Steps to Success is as much a part of the Conestoga Valley area as fun, treats and costumes are a part of Halloween. “It’s a great way for us to bring the community together,” said Adriana Witman, Steps to Success’ early education administrative director of the learning center’s upcoming event. “We’re not just about child care; we’re also about the community. But we want to showcase what we do. It’s a friendly, family, fall event.” In partnership with Zion Lutheran Church Leola, Steps to Success Childcare and Early Learning Center will present this year’s edition of its annual Trunk or Treat outing from 4 to 7 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 25, at the church, 18 Quarry Road, Leola. The lively event is free to attend, but attendees are asked to register at www.stepstosuccessinc.com/trunkortreat. Trick or treat in Leola will be held this year

“Swing!” Will Connect Audiences With Their Mojo BY JEFF FALK
Swing music. And the performers of Servant Stage. What possesses the power to “Swing originated in the 1920s bring a tap to your toes, to put and was popular in the 1930s and a bounce in your step, to bring a ’40s,” said Johnathan Bauer, who snap to your fingers? founded Servant Stage in 2013. Local Recreation Promotes Healthy Work-Life Balance
ast Lampeter Township is 12 months into its grand recreation exper iment. Time for an update. While results have been mostly mixed, some positive and quantifiable progress has been realized. But much work remains in the new recreation department’s mission to get the word out and provide activities that appeal to a majority of East Lampeter Township residents. “I always feel like we can be doing more and reaching more people,” said Lisa Cleveland, who as recreation director makes up East Lampeter Township’s one-person recreation department. “Growth
is not resting. Am I happy where we are in the time we got here? Yes. Do we have more work to do? Yes. The opportunities are endless, so there are always things that are going to be new.” Since officials made the commitment to provide recreational opportunities to the township’s citizens on May 28, 2024, by hiring Cleveland as recreation director, the newly formed East Lampeter Township Recreation Department has instituted a number of programs and activities, some of which have been well received. The department has provided community events like movie nights, a fall festival and an Easter egg hunt; youth events like Hero Hang-Out, Touch-a-Truck
and a summer playground program; fitness and yoga programs; and educational programs like a bird walk and Exploring the Night Sky. This spring, the department introduced a community gardens program that allows individuals and families to rent plots of land at Community Park for growing vegetables, plants and flowers. Twelve of the 16 available plots are currently being utilized. The recreation department has also placed a strong emphasis on promoting and utilizing township facilities like Community Park, Flory Park, Lafayette-Tower Park and Gibbons Park at Nolt’s Mill, as well as fostering relationships with like-minded community partners.
LCWG Is Made Up of a Bunch of Do-Gooders
BY JEFF FALK
Good is universal, timeless and objective. Because it mirrors God, good is good. The Lancaster County Women for Good (LCWG) group knows some things about the concept of doing good. It’s part of the all-volunteer organization’s mission, purpose and reason for existing. “We use that word a lot, ‘good,’” said Anna Horst, the chairperson of the five-member board that oversees LCWG’s operations. “It’s
in our name. I think it’s safe to say our connections and providing nonprofits with resources is part of the good we aim to do. I think there are a number of nonprofits in Lancaster County who have amazing missions. They’re real people trying to help real people. They are problems that a majority of us would agree need to be solved. Maybe we need to be more clear by what we mean by ‘good.’” LCWG, which does not operate from a physical office or building, conducts more than 15 membership events each year, including

T h e y g o t t h e b a n d b ac k together. Formed in 1975 while students at Hempfield High School, members of the group Andora reunited in 2022, and it feels so good. Andora consists of Lancaster Township resident T homas Richards, who sings and plays the rhythm guitar; Ron Sharpe of Millersville, who plays the bass and sings; East Earl resident David Chambers, who does vocals and plays the guitar; and drummer Curt Ruhl of Denver. Richards and Chambers started playing music together in East Petersburg when they were approximately 10 years old. “We had the entire band packed in a little red wagon,” said Richards. “It was one drum, one cymbal, (Chambers’) amp, and a guitar.” Sharpe and Ruhl joined about six years later. “I don’t know how we all got together, but I do remember that the first big thing we played was a Battle of the Bands at Hempfield High School,” Richards said. “We had a very unusual rehearsal spot. We rented a storage unit at a place called Stowaway. I think they had one plug for power, no heat. But we’d rehearsed there, and we rehearsed at somebody’s house. We played a Battle of the Bands, and we won.” The group settled on the name Andora, but the details are a bit fuzzy. Sharpe pointed out that on the television show “Bewitched,” Samantha’s mother’s name is Endora. There is a country on the Iberian Peninsula named Andora.

What happens when some of the best high school bands in the region get together to perform? An event that’s full of fun and excitement, said Keara Dagen, co-chair of the Baron Invitational. “This event is high-energy! It is amazing to witness the hard work of multiple high school marching bands come to fruition on the field,” she said. “These schools have all been working on their shows since before school started and put many hours into perfecting not only the music, but an award-winning show.” The Baron Invitational will take place on Saturday, Oct. 25, at Manheim Central High School’s Rettew Stadium, 400 Adele Ave., Manheim. Gates are tentatively scheduled to open at 3 p.m. The exact time will be finalized closer to the event.

Eighteen bands will compete in the event, with an additional t wo per forming exhibition shows. Competing bands are from Jersey Shore Area High School, Middletown Area High School, Shamokin Area High S chool, York Catholic High School, Donegal High School, Big Spring High School, Conestoga Valley High School, Garden Spot High School, Littlestown High School, Twin Valley High School, Conrad Weiser High School, Greencastle-Antrim High School, Lower Dauphin High School, Cedar Crest High School, Eastern York High School, Red Lion Area High School, South Western High School and Warwick High School. Exhibition bands are from Manheim Central High School and Millersville University. “Last year, there were 12 bands performing - 10 bands competing, plus Manheim Central and Millersville University as exhibition performers,” Dagen shared. “We are thrilled that this year we have so many more!” The event is part of the Cavalcade of Bands competition, which features performances at local football stadiums on weekends from September through early November. Bands receive verbal judged commentary and numeric scores as each school has the opportunity to perform in front of large crowds of spectators. The competition groups bands by division, based on the total number of members. “Competing with other bands is fun, but most bands get satisfaction out of improving their own scores as the season goes on,” Dagen explained. “Since Manheim Central is hosting, they will not be competing. We are excited to host Millersville University’s marching band as an exhibition performance again this year, too! We are looking forward to watching a college-level band perform, as our normal weekto-week experience is with other high schools.” Food will be available to purchase at the event and will include hot dogs, walking tacos, soups, french fries and baked goods. This is the 24th year Manheim Central has hosted the event, and it provides a chance for the bands to hone their skills while also having fun, Dagen said. “Band members are always looking to grow their individual skills and improve their group performance,” she remarked. “Plus, after each band is done performing, they get to watch the other bands perform. There is great camaraderie and support for each other in the marching band community.”

The Manheim Central High School marching band participates in a recent competition.
The invitational is a fundraiser for the Marching Barons, who will perform their show based on the theme “Cirque Diabolique.” “It’s a slightly dark take on the circus,” Dagen said. “The show features different aspects of the circus - arriving on a train, performing under the big top, etc. - but also aims to demonstrate the unsettling feeling of something lurking beneath the surface.” Under the direction of John Brackbill, the band includes high school students as well as “Super Freshmen,” or eighth-graders who are invited to join the band. There is an admission charge for the invitational, with separate prices for adults and for students. Proceeds from the event are used
by the band booster club to support band programming. “Some of the financial assistance offered to the marching band through the boosters includes uniforms, music scores, sound equipment, instrument maintenance and support for trips,” Dagen noted, adding that the booster club will also accept donations at www. mcmarchingbarons.org. Dagen invites everyone out to the invitational for an entertaining event. “You will walk away entertained and filled with awe for these young musicians and their directors,” she said. “As a bonus, you will be supporting the Manheim Central marching band’s school-year programming.”

live for today, but play music from our youth. “We wanted the band to be nothing but the ’70s, what we experienced in our high school days,” Sharpe said. “We did incorporate a few of the songs that we played back then, but we wanted to be nothing solely but ’70s classic rock, because that was basically what we listened to during our teenage years. We’ve stuck to that, and our followers know when they come, they’re going to take a trip down memory lane and they’re going to hear ’70s classic rock. We try to give them all the songs that are sing along and danceable. You know the lyrics; you can dance to it. You’re going to have a good time. Granted, our key audience is 50-plus. But I think classic rock spans the generations.” Richards added, “It’s been said of the band that we are like a time machine.” Some of their equipment remains from the first iteration. Chambers still plays the same 1970 Gibson SG guitar he was gifted by his dad at the age of 14. Ruhl’s father helped him purchase a new set Ludwig blue Vistalite drums. He sold them after the group disbanded. “I wanted to get another set of Vistalites to go back in time, like we did, with our performances. I finally found another set (in Pittsburgh), and that’s what we use today. They’re getting hard to find. That means a lot to me, those drums.” Andora has monthly shows planned into the spring. “We try to limit it to one performance a month for three reasons,” Sharpe said. “One, we hope we can

“Somehow we got to talking and came up with Andora instead of Endora,” said Sharpe. Andora performed together for 18 months. Then, as Journey sang in 1983, the members went their “separate ways.” Some members even sold their equipment while others performed in different bands. The quartet mostly kept in contact, and Richards reached out to his bandmates after seeing an advertisement for an open mic night. As Jake Blues said to his brother, Elwood, in the movie “Blues Brothers,” “Hey, man, we’re getting the band back together.” “Once you’ve played, you always have the bug to play,” Richards said. “Once you perform, you always want to perform. I thought maybe we could get together for the open mic night.” He went to work. “I knew where Dave was, so I called Dave, and I knew how to get hold of Ron,” Richards recalled. The three met at the Hurricane Grill & Tavern in Columbia, fitting since Andora has been rocking people like a hurricane ever since. “We decided on three or four songs that we still remembered, and we played,” said Richards. “It was fun as usual, and then the phone calls started. Do we want to do this again?” The answer to that question was the same as the correct response to “Who sang ‘Owner of a Lonely Heart?’” - Yes. Andora traveled to the beat of a different drum(mer) during the first show back. “When we did the first open mic, we hadn’t contacted Curt yet,” Chambers said. “We didn’t know where he was, so we had a stand-in drummer just for that open mic night. Then we decided we’re going to get hold of Curt and we’re all going to get together.” Andora members met at Chambers’ house to review music, brainstorm, and play some tunes. Ruhl didn’t have his drum set with him, so he used baby toys as shakers to keep rhythm. Sharpe said the band members agreed they would go back to their (grass) roots. They concluded, “Let’s

For the 16th year, Blue Ridge Communications, in partnership with Keystone Military Families (KMF), is participating in the Stockings For Soldiers initiative. Every year, KMF ships between 8,000 and 10,000 holiday stockings filled with donated food, hygiene products and other essentials to military personnel who cannot be with their loved ones. KMF is focused on improving the packaging and shipping processes to reach as many troops as possible. All funds collected this year will help cover shipping costs and purchase additional items to include in the stockings. Community members may
a hands-on Educator Externship designed to bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world career opportunities in the skilled trades. The experience, held on Sept. 12, welcomed educators from across Lancaster County into the heart of Goodhart Sons’ operations, where they explored the company’s welding, fabrication, rigging, millwright and project management services. From touring expansive fabrication facilities to engaging directly with tradespeople and project support personnel, teachers gained firsthand exposure to the skills, collaboration and innovation that drive industrial projects forward locally and nationwide. Educators walked away with a deeper understanding of how technical skills and work ethic translate into meaningful careers and how they can bring that message into their own classrooms. Participants also discovered ways to better engage students in STEM, technical education and career pathways that do not always require a four-year degree. The event emphasized the impor tance of early career awareness and community-based collaboration to ensure Lancaster County students see the full range of opportunities available to them. This externship builds on the momentum of previous LCSA partnerships with regional industry leaders such as Rock Lititz, CNHi, Eurofins, Advanced Cooling Technologies (ACT) and Lancaster Farming. “(Trunk or Treat is) like trick or treat in somebody’s trunk in a parking lot,” said Witman. “I enjoy seeing the families come together. Typically, we don’t see the families together in one place at one time. But we get a lot of people from the community as well. We know a lot of the faces who come, and other people are coming out through word of mouth.” It’s the 20 themed and decorated vehicle trunks that give the event its name. Presented by community partners, local businesses and individual community members, the trunks offer visitors selections of treats, coloring pages and candy. Steps to Success’ Trunk or Treat will also offer prizes for the most creatively decorated trunks and the best costumes. There will also be local nonprofits on hand supplying information about the services and products that they provide. “People come and dress up, and we kind of go all out,” said Witman, who will be dressed as Glinda from “Wicked.” “It’s always so much fun. Everybody is so happy and excited. People you wouldn’t typically see come out. The atmosphere is very upbeat.” In addition, Steps to Success’ Trunk or Treat will feature a book fair, themed “Wicked Good Reading.” Food will be available through food trucks, and there will be a fire pit and a s’mores station, as well as bounce houses, slides and a photo booth.
It’s been four years since Steps to Success started staging its Trunk or Treat. “In 2021, there were still COVID restrictions,” said Witman. “We’ve continued it every year, and we added something every year to make it bigger. Now it’s an integral part of what we do.” Currently, 277 children from 6 weeks to 12 years old are enrolled in Steps to Success’ seven child care and early education programs, 203 of whom reside in the Conestoga Valley School District. In 2020, a total of 90 kids were enrolled in Steps to Success’ programs. “We’ve just kind of grown, and I think there’s more growth in our future,” said Witman. “Right now, we’re pretty happy with the way things have gone. It’s been a lot of fun over the last five years. It’s been fun to experience the journey along the way, and Trunk or Treat has grown with us.” Of the 39 individuals employed by Steps to Success, 33 are teachers. Steps to Success, which was founded by executive director Michelle Harbaugh in 1995, is funded through private pay and government-subsidized child care. “Trunk or Treat allows us to showcase how we’ve grown over the last five years and the great work that we’re doing at this time,” said Witman. “The dedication to the community and the work we do is super important to us. That’s why we keep holding the Trunk or Treat event.”

There are no televisions at Camp Mack, and the cell phone reception is spotty at best, but the facility does offer Wi-Fi. J. Edward Mack is open yearround but mostly visited during the warmer months. “Throughout the year, things are happening there,” said Klutzaritz, a resident of West Hempfield Township. “Primarily, the use of that property is for our Cub Scouts. Some of the Cub Scouts are camping for the first time.” At the height of the summer, as many as 250 Cub Scouts - boys and girls from kindergarten to fifth grade - frequent Camp Mack each week. Overall, thousands of people visit Camp Mack each year, including Boy Scout troops and other groups from all over Lancaster County and Lebanon County and as far away as Harrisburg and Allentown. The J. Edward Mack Scout Reservation is the only Scouting America camp in Lancaster County and one of only a handful in the central Pennsylvania region. “These young people are boys and girls,” said Klutzaritz. “They’re simply youth who have decided Scouting has a program they want to participate in. They’re learning some skills they don’t even realize
they’re learning. They’re learning through fun activities.” The J. Edward Mack Scout Reservation was established in 1969 through a donation by Lancaster County businessman J. Edward Mack, himself a former Eagle Scout. It has been estimated that Camp Mack has impacted nearly 200,000 young lives in a wholesome manner during its existence. “I want people to know we’re here,” said Klutzaritz. “When I talk to people about Scouting, if they know about it, they have a very high opinion of Scouting. But there are a lot of people who can’t tell you anything about Scouting.” The Pennsylvania Dutch Council, which is headquartered at 630 Janet Ave., Lancaster, is one of 248 Scouting America councils in the United States. The local chapter serves over 2,000 youths from Lancaster County and Lebanon County. “Scouting helps young people become productive and valued members of society,” said Klutzaritz. “Scouting teaches you how to be a well-rounded person. Scouting teaches you things that schools can’t.” For additional information, go to https://padutchbsa.org/camping/ mack.

We’re building good people, we’re building good parents and we’re building good employees.” Located at 2 Scout Lane, Newmanstown, in Elizabeth Township, on the border between Lancaster County and Lebanon County, J. Edward Mack Scout Reservation is 1,100 Furnace Hill acres of trees, wildlife, nature and the great outdoors. The facility includes a lake, a pool, 25 miles of hiking trails, a shooting range, a dining hall, 11 camp sites for tenting under the stars and five cabins. “The kids love the pool, especially in the middle of the summer,” said Klutzaritz. “If you asked five kids what their favorite thing about Camp Mack is, at least three of them are going to give you different answers. In Lancaster County and Lebanon County, we have natural resources. But kids who live in towns and cities don’t get a chance to do this stuff; they don’t get a chance to be in the woods.” Among the favorite activities at Camp Mack are fishing, boating, swimming, archery, BB-gun shooting, crafts, human foosball, bike riding, pedal cars and campfires.

teachers. “ The school was star ted (because of ) a need for more Christian schools,” said Zimmerman. “The schools that were open were at their max, and parents were looking for options. Parents got together and said, ‘Let’s buy land and star t a
school.’ They saw a need. It was a slow process, it didn’t happen overnight, but the school eventually ran out of space. The way it’s evolved is because there are needs and we wanted to meet those needs.” For additional information, go to https://catalystchristianschool.org.

So, what’s in a name? A name is an initial point of contact. A name can provide identity and familiarity. A name can come to be associated with ideas, concepts and specific values. Lititz Area Mennonite School (LAMS) has changed its name. Henceforth, the faith-based, private school will go by Catalyst Christian School (CCS). “It was not a decision that was taken lightly,” said Ashlee Zimmerman, CCS’ marketing director. “(School officials) realized nothing was going to feel right because it’s so new. It’s going to be hard to pick a name, and it’s going to grow on you when you start using it. They eliminated all of the other ones, and this is the one they picked. The name fits the school so well.” In late May, the former LAMS formally changed the name it had been known by for 48 years. An intensive rebranding process produced Catalyst Christian School and the Firehawks as the school’s new mascot, replacing the Bolts. Catalyst Christian School is located at 1050 E. Newport Road, Lititz. “In scientific terms, a catalyst speeds up the process of change,” said Zimmerman. “Faith in Christ is the ultimate in our transformations. The school has energy. The students have energy. We want our students to be launched into the world as catalysts.” CCS’ renaming process included a list of hundreds of potential new names presented by a branding company; discussion on both the committee and board levels; and input from families, parents and students. Timing wise, the final decision coincided with recent renovations at the school. “This is something that had been talked about for 10 years,” said Zimmerman. “The (rebranding) committee boiled down the list of names, presented it to the board and they prayed about it and talked about it. LAMS sometimes caused confusion for some people, who thought you had to be Mennonite to attend. We felt we needed something that was a little more inclusive and matched who we are as a school. The Lititz area is geographically small, and when you look at the area where we’re drawing our students from, it’s bigger.” There are 330 students from
prekindergarten through 12th grade enrolled at CCS for the 2025-26 school year, and the school generally draws students from a 15-mile radius, from communities like Akron, Ephrata, Manheim, Newmanstown and Lititz. CCS employs 42 teachers and 30 administrators and support staff members. “ The school realize d we weren’t reaching the people who we felt like we were called to reach,” said Zimmerman. “The school has such a great legacy and such a great foundation. If we are called to be raising up children, we want to make sure the name is not a barrier. We need to help people realize who we are. The question became: ‘How do we help people understand and get people to come and check it out?’” Currently, there are no shortages of educational choices for families in Lancaster County. It’s a competitive market that affords parents and students opportunities to explore the best personalized educational options. “When you look at the area we live in and the choices for education, you need to be able to differentiate yourself from all of those schools,” said Zimmerman. “It’s very competitive, and yet we all kind of root for each other. It’s not like anyone is trying to steal anyone’s students. Each school kind of has its own thing. Having a brand that people recognize is necessary.” CCS was established as LAMS in 1978. The school, which added high school curriculum in 2018, began with 67 students and six
