e is a role model, a moral sounding board, a liaison between this world and the next. He is a man of God. Kirk Marks is the new pastor at Faith Church. “Here at Faith Church, the pastor has the responsibility of providing leadership for the implementation of biblical principles of mission and ministry of our church’s life,” said Marks. “The pastor preaches, works with the staff to create worship services, supervises the church employees, leads a sermon discussion each Sunday, oversees all pastoral care of the congregation and serves as the theologian-in-residence for all facets of church life.” In the middle of September, Marks officially became the next pastor at Faith Church, 2124 Old Philadelphia Pike, Lancaster. Since February, Marks had functioned as the interim pastor at Faith Church, replacing Dr. Joel Kime, who had

There is a society of covert actors operating in our community. They call themselves “The Lancaster-Lebanon League Quarterback Club.” They meet regularly under the pretenses of victories, competitiveness and an exchange of game film. But the real nature of their mission is to promote a game they love,

foster lasting friendships and aid student-athletes. “It’s an opportunity to be part of something bigger than yourself,” said Kris Miller, the ringleader and president of the club. “I played in the LancasterLebanon League, I was an assistant coach and now I’m a head coach. The group of guys and camaraderie we have is really cool, and it’s special to be a part of that.”

Music is a series of sounds, n o te s , b e at s a n d r hy t h m s arranged in a way that is pleasing to the ear. But music is also a combination of dozens of different genres culturally influenced by time-honored traditions, not unlike Scottish or Celtic. “We play a variety of Irish and Scottish music,” said Christy King, who’s been the musical director of the Ceili Band for five years. “The music uses ornamentation and rhythms that are very distinct from other music. While we use sheet music as well, the style needs to be studied by ear in order to capture the essence of music. That probably creates the greatest challenge for musicians learning Celtic music, especially for those trained classically.” A part of the Paloma Performance Troupe, the Ceili Band is an independent musical ensemble that also supports the Doherty Petri School of Irish Dance. After all, what’s dancing without music? The Ceili Band generally practices a couple of times a week, mainly at the Celtic Center of Lancaster, 1285 Manheim Pike, Lancaster. “Our goal is to bring musicians of all ages and musical backgrounds together to learn and enjoy Celtic music,” said King. “The band is also an opportunity for musicians to get experience performing on a stage for an audience.” The Ceili Band is made up of about 25 musicians, mostly from Lancaster County and ranging in age from 8 to 70. Those musicians play fiddles, keyboards, guitars, cellos, bodhrans, flutes and a double bass. See Ceili pg 8

Lead-Free Families

Conestoga Valley

BY LOGAN MOYER P U B L I S H E D B Y:

PUBLISHED WEDNESDAYS

In accordance with National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week, Penn Me d ic i ne ’s “ L e ad - F re e Families” initiative is set to hold a free Lead-Free Kids event on Sunday, Oct. 25, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Tiny Town, 533 Janet Ave., Lancaster. The third annual event, previously held at the Lancaster Science Factory, promises a focus on a “variety of topics related to lead, lead poisoning prevention and children’s health and safety,” including family-oriented activities, free food and lead poisoning-related resources. “The goal is just to educate the community on lead poisoning and how to prevent it,” said Meredith Lasdin, supervisor of the Lead-Free Families initiative. “Our program exists to help with that and come alongside them in the journey of lead poisoning prevention.” L a nc a s te r Co u nt y i s greatly susceptible to lead poisoning due to its large number of older homes. Nearly 60% of homes in the county were built before lead paint was banned, according to the Center for American Progress. “Our housing stock is

old,” Lasdin said. “Houses that were built before 1978 are at risk of having lead paint because lead paint was not banned in this country until 1978. ... The age of lead paint at this point has caused it to start breaking down, and that’s when it becomes a hazard.” “The health effects of lead poisoning cannot be understated,” said Leaha S her meyer, outreach coordinator of Lead-Free Families. “When a child is lead-poisoned, the effects of that poisoning are permanent on their brain.” Free ice cream will be served at the event. Multiple food trucks have also been invited to the event. As in the past, costumed characters will also be in attendance. Free admission to the event is possible due to a grant from the Women’s Giving Circle. Another feature of the day will be the opportunity for families to win giveaway drawings, which include tickets to community businesses and experiences. “People will get tickets, and there’s no purchasing needed,” Shermeyer said. “(We’ll have) Corn Cob Acres, Dutch Wonderland, Fox Meadows Creamery, Nothing Bundt Cakes and also some lead check swabs that are EPA certified.”

There will be free community resources at the event. Photo by Leaha Shermeyer.

Many free resources will be offered at the event, including point-of-care lead screening for children age 6 and under through Warwick Community Ambulance Association (WCAA); soil sample testing for lead through Property Lead; and tabling partners that will provide resources on other children’s health and safety-related topics, including early learning, nutrition and gun safety. Free car seat checks will also be provided by certified technicians through WCAA, a new feature of this year’s event. “Families are welcome to bring a soil sample or an item they’re concerned about, because all of those free resources are going to be there,” Shermeyer explained. The Lead-Free Families initiative was launched in 2021 with a $50 million

grant from Penn Medicine. It’s the first program of its kind in the United States and has already checked out close to 900 homes in the county for lead. “There is no other program that does this; this is a very unique investment that was made in L ancaster,” said Shermeyer. “Lead poisoning affects families living in all different types of old housing across the county, rural and urban housing.” More information about the initiative can be obtained by emailing info@ leadfreefamilies.org or by calling 717-554-5323. The program currently offers lead screening, in-home lead testing and remediation, health care and social service support, community education, outreach and public policy advocacy and education.

Quarterback from pg 1 Miller is the head football coach at Ephrata Senior High School and one of more than 40 coaches - one representative from each of the L ancaster-Lebanon League’s 37 member schools - actively involved with the club, a tradition-rich organization dedicated to growing the game of football and helping its players become better young men on and off the gridiron. During the regular scholastic fall season, the quarterback club meets at 7 p.m. on every Tuesday at the centrally located Ephrata American Legion Post 429, 300 Cocalico St., Ephrata. The 90-minute meetings consist of supper, coaches’ nominations for players of the week and players of the year, voting, discussion and the planning of upcoming events. Many of the meetings feature specific themes, like all-timers’ night, officials’ night, athletic directors’ night, college night and media night. “We all want to support each other,” said Miller. “We played Cocalico in week two. It was a great game, and then on the following Tuesday I got an opportunity to sit down with Coach (Bryan) Strohl and have a conversation. We get to bounce ideas off each other, and everyone has always been willing to give feedback. It’s a great resource to have. There are a lot more similarities between coaches than there are differences.” The quarterback club also recognizes individual accomplishments through its awards for players of the week, players of the year and its all-academic team, and those honors are released to local media outlets in a timely fashion. The latter of those awards are announced in early December following the club’s year-end banquet at The Timbers Restaurant in Mount Gretna. “Football participation numbers overall are going down, for whatever reasons,” said Miller. “Football is a hard sport that requires a lot of time. You get 10 guaranteed opportunities (games) to play, and you’ve got to work 52 weeks a year to play. Recognizing players is important because you want to recognize the work they put in. It also gets their name out there. Anytime players see their names in

the paper, they feel like the work has been worth it.” The quarterback club has been operating in its current capacity as an organization for 75 years. Not every football league across the state is supported by a group like the L ancaster-Lebanon League Quarterback Club. “It originally started as a place where coaches could come together and do film exchange,” said Miller. “But our purpose has always been to promote players and grow our sport. Because technology has changed, we’ve had to adjust how we do it. As fierce as competitors as we are on Friday nights as coaches, the other six days of the week we’re here to grow the game and give kids an opportunity to play the sport. We care about our sport, and we care about kids.”

Pastor Kirk from pg 1 Valley Christian Community Services (CVCCS) and Conestoga Valley SEEDS, supports its own active prison ministry and hosts six other local churches for events, services and meetings. “Faith Church is like many other churches in that we have a building and congregation, hold services and seek to represent Jesus to our community,” said Marks. “As is also true of any church, it is the uniqueness of the people in our church family that makes us who we are. Faith Church especially emphasizes following Jesus, being his disciples in all we do, and we work diligently to equip our people to do that together.” Faith Church has been a member of the Conestoga Valley community since

1960. The congregation constr ucted the initial building at its current site in 1971 and has added to it a handful of times over the last half-century. “Most of the pastor’s job is done behind the scenes,” said Marks. “Preaching, teaching and ‘being out in front’ of the congregation or other groups is actually only a small percentage of how pastors spend their time. Preparing messages and lessons, preparing for and attending meetings, ministering directly to congregants, overseeing staff, connecting with others in the community and church administration are all very important pastoral tasks, and are all done behind the scenes.” For additional information, go to www.findfaith here.org.

Members of the Ceili Band play a number at a recent concert.

“I think the band is unique in the wide range of ages and abilities,” said King, a resident of Ephrata. “We try to have a place for everyone to participate. We want people to know that anyone is welcome to come give the band a try.” In collaboration with the dancers, the Ceili Band performs about four times a year, at venues and events like the Lititz Fire and Ice Festival, the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire, Highland Presbyterian Church and the Maryland Irish Festival. “Celtic music is beautiful and attainable for anyone,” said King, “whether you want to dust off your fiddle and join us at practice or come out to one of our performances. We hope to pass on the joy of music to everyone around us.”

T he Ceili B and was formed about five years ago, around the same time that dance instructor Esther Pujol was piecing together the Doherty Petri School of Irish Dance. It turned out to be a match made in Irish music heaven. “I had been teaching fiddle lessons at the Celtic Center and started a group practice with some of my students, along with a few other musicians from the dance school,” said King. “Esther was, at the same time, putting together numbers with the dancers, some of them involving both the band and the dancers together. The idea was Esther’s brainchild, and we worked it out along with the help of many other incredible teachers and musicians over the years.”
