here’s good spooky, and then there’s bad spooky. Steps to Success’ Trunk or Treat is nothing but healthy Halloween vibes. “Every year, it is a fun, family-friendly event that brings the community together in a positive way,” said Adriana Witman, the executive programming administrator for Steps to Success. “It’s all about how we can give back to our community and bring a little fall fun. We love that the Zion Church evangelism team gets involved to help with the event too.” A childcare and early education center, Steps to Success will be hosting its now annual trunk or treat event from 4 to 7 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 24, at and around its facilities at Zion Lutheran Church, 18 Quarry Road, Leola. The good spooky event is free to attend, but visitors and interested contributors are encouraged to register at www.stepstosuccesinc.com/trunkortreat. “I love having a day to be creative, have fun and bring all of our programs together,” said Witman. “We have seven programs across Lancaster County and serve over 200 families, so being able to offer an event to bring them together in one place where the Visitors to last year’s trunk or treat event at Steps to Success See Trunk or Treat pg 2 show off their costumes.

It’s almost like the old chicken and the egg routine. What’s unclear is if Lancaster County is so generous because there are so many great causes out there, or if there are so many great causes because Lancaster County residents are so altruistic. “Lancaster County is a frugal county,” said David Kieffer, pastor of Ephrata Reformed Presbyterian Church and president of Faithful Give. “Residents are generous, but they’re not foolish with their donations. They want good return on their investments. They want to donate to causes that are aligned with their

Forty-nine years. That’s almost half a century. That’s a lot of bread on the table, that’s a lot of bacon brought home, that’s a lot of garbanzo beans. That’s a lot of hungry people served. A former pastor, George Weaver has been co-coordinating the New Holland Area Crop Hunger Walk, along with Cedar Grove Presbyterian Church pastor Kris Poontajak, for more than 20 years. “There’s always groups who are fading out, and we recruit other ones,” said Weaver. “It’s harder to keep it going than it was 50 years ago. In the last few years, we’ve been raising $8,000 to $10,000. Twenty-five years ago, we raised $15,000 or $20,000. It’s been harder to keep the proceeds coming in.” Community members can help by participating in the next New Holland Area Crop Hunger Walk. This year’s edition of the altruistic community tradition will be staged from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 18, at New Holland Community Memorial Park, 401 E. Jackson St., New Holland. The 3-mile walk will be staged from the Rotary Pavilion at the park. From there, walkers will trek to Garden Spot Village, make a loop and then return to the park. “We do it because people are hungry,” said Weaver. “We’ve been doing it for 49 years locally. Everyone can make a difference, one step at a time.” More than 50 walkers are expected to participate in the See Crop Walk pg 12

Pedaling Toward Personal Growth BY CATHY MOLITORIS

Students who par ticipated in the Lifecycles Summer Challenge Rides have quite the answer if a teacher asks them “What did you do on your summer vacation?” They logged thousands of miles on their bicycles, traveling across state lines, making friends and growing in both faith and confidence. The mission of Lifecycles is to build young men and women of character in a Christ-centered bicycle touring adventure experience. This summer, four groups of riders embarked on Challenge Rides that showcased their biking skills and their endurance. Three groups of boys and one group of girls participated in the Challenge Rides, said Lee DeRemer, director of Lifecycles. One of the boys’ teams took a route through the Great Allegheny Passage, from Pittsburgh to Washing ton, D.C., traveling 320 miles, while the other two traveled through the Adirondack Mountains up into New England and along the Canadian border, covering 324 miles. “The girls rode on a new route from Connecticut north to Massachusetts and into Boston, finishing up with a ride to Cape Cod,” Lee said. “They rode 224 miles.” The boys’ trips included 39 riders, while 19 people participated on the girls’

ride. Each trip took more than a week to complete, and the rides took place in July and August. “It was hot,” Lee said. “And the miles were big. They rode four or five hours a day, sometimes longer. One of the trips had an 84-mile day in it.” W hile the boys navigated a climb up Whiteface Mountain near Lake Placid, N.Y., the girls had to navigate traffic in Boston. “Each trip had its unique physical challenges,” Lee said. “ T here ’s also the mental challenge of staying focused, staying safe, not quitting and bringing a good attitude each day.” Riders ranged in age from 14 to 18, and Lee emphasized that they received much more out of the experience that just exercise. “ There’s the physical challenge of the rides, but there’s also the friendship that happens along the way,” he said. “There’s also the development of leadership, teamwork and other skills, as well as spiritual growth during the devotionals held each night. They get into some deep conversations.” To train for the Challenge Rides, the students begin riding in April for upward of 90 minutes a ride. On Saturdays, they ride for three to five hours. “By the time they get to the end of July and head out on the trips, they’re physically ready to do it,” See Pedaling pg 3

Trunk or Treat from pg 1 teachers and administration are also having fun is special. I also like seeing community members come out and enjoy the free festivities.” The event will feature doz ens of de corate d vehicle trunks filled with candy, prizes and games for trick or treating, and a prize will be awarded for the best decorated trunk. There will also be food trucks, an awe-inspiring magician, a scholastic book fair, campfires and a s’mores station. Local Scouting America Troops 82 and 83 will be on hand to provide assistance as needed. “This year, our company theme is ‘Super Mario,’ so I will be there as Princess Daisy,” said Witman, “and we’ll have all the characters represented, including two of the cutest toad babies. Previously, we’ve done ‘Inside Out,’ ‘Target,’ and ‘Wicked.’ I always find a way to be the princess though.” Steps to Success originally established its trunk

or treat event in 2021. Since its inception, the outreach event has steadily grown in popularity to a point where it is now a community happening. “It started as a result of COVID, and we have continued to hold it to bring the community in to see what we are all about, which is community and early childhood education,” said Witman. “It started out as a small idea and mostly just the Steps to Success immediate community, but it has evolved into a bigger event. Each year it gets a little bigger.” Currently, Steps to Success has 272 children enrolled across all of its programs, with more families registered on wait lists. Steps to Success employs 42 staff members - 36 teachers, five administrative personnel and a cook. “Our vision is to partner with the community to provide resources and services to staff, children and families and to enable all to grow to be productive citizens,” said Witman.

Over the last three years, the fundraising and giving initiative has raised more than $4.4 million for the underresourced. “Ever y year we’ve set a goal and God has surpassed it. This year, we’ll see what God will do,” said Kieffer. “When we started, I wasn’t sure it was going to fly. Certainly, God has done more than we have asked, thought or imagined. local and global organizations dedicated to fighting hunger. Of the total proceeds, 75% will be donated to sponsor C hurch World Service, and the other 25% will go to local nonprofits like Conestoga Valley Christian Community Services (CVCCS) and area churches. “People enjoy it, and they know they’re doing it for a good cause,” said Weaver, a native and resident of New Holland. “They talk to their friends and get them to make a donation. Businesses will support them. A lot of it really depends on the weather.” The New Holland area’s walk is one of more than 1,300 crop hunger walks staged each year in the United States. The walks originated from the Christian Rural Overseas Program, which was formed in 1947 as a way for Midwest farmers to share food with countries in Europe and Asia after World War II. “The best thing about it is knowing you’re helping people who are less fortunate than you,” said Weaver. To participate in the New Holland Area Crop Hunger Walk or to sponsor a walker, call 717-354-5573 or email pastorkris@frontier.com.
