CV Plans Homecoming Celebration n Friday, Oct. 15, Conestoga Valley High School (CVHS) will hold its annual homecoming celebration. The 2021 homecoming queen will be crowned during halftime of the varsity football game against Manheim Central High School, which will begin at 7 p.m. at the school stadium, 2110 Horseshoe Road, Lancaster. Francesca Satiro, who was a member of the 2020 homecoming court, will crown the 2021 queen at the conclusion of the ceremony. The eight 2021 homecoming queen candidates are Kailey Anderson, Annika Bredeman, Cate Chadwick, Casey Kaufhold, Riley Kiel, Delainey Varela-Keen, Jenna Rychener, and Megan Rychener. All candidates will be escorted to the game by their parents. Kailey Anderson is the daughter of David Knapik of Brownstown and Kari Lonie of Brownstown. At school, she is a member of Students Against

Destructive Decisions (SADD), Women’s Liberation Alliance, Power Club, and the Conestoga Valley dance team. She is also the manager of the basketball team. Outside school, she completes volunteer work at Emmanuel United Methodist Church. Following graduation, she plans to attend college with the goal of earning her doctorate degree. Annika Bredeman is the daughter of Justin and Sally Bredeman of Lancaster. At school, she is vice president of the Class of 2022, president of Science National Honor Society (SNHS), and a member of National Honor Society (NHS) and SADD. She runs cross -country and plays lacrosse. Outside school, she is involved in youth group at Keystone Church, and she volunteers at Conestoga Valley Christian Community Services and Smoketown Elementary School. Following the development of the South Campus of Landis Homes, 1001 E. Oregon Road, Lititz, about a decade ago, a group of residents became involved in the preservation of 10 acres of land four acres called Leaman Woods and another approximately six acres of floodplain. “The Friends of the Woods and See Landis Communities pg 5

Author Kristin Manser will give a presentation at the Ephrata Public Library during Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

“My whole objective is to bring awareness to the subject,” said Kristin Manser, author of the recently published book “The Invisible Bruise: Finding Freedom and Hope After an Emotionally Abusive Relationship, ” a story she wrote about her experience with this form of abuse. “It was really a dark time for me,” she recalled, adding that manipulation and gaslighting can be confusing and hard to explain. Having overcome her experience, Manser now has the goal of bringing

hope to others. “With a topic like this, we need to stand up and attack it and bring it to light,” she said. That is exactly what Manser plans to do with two upcoming author talks. The first will be held at the Ephrata Public Library, 550 S. Reading Road, Ephrata, on Monday, Oct. 25, at 6 p.m., and the second will be held at the ELANCO Library, 11 Chestnut Drive, New Holland, at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 28. Manser said it took her a year to write the book, which grew out of journaling and working with a psychologist to dissect her experience.

Valudes said the event has grown since it was first held and that past dinners have attracted up to 60

At Dinner in the Dark, diners may experience what it is like to eat with a vision impairment.

The Paradise Lions Club is planning its fifth Dinner in the Dark, after the 2020 event was not held due to COVID-19 restrictions. Club member Heather Valudes remembers that the group began holding the event, which gives diners a unique opportunity to experience eating a meal with limited or no vision, in 2016. The 2021 Paradise Lions Dinner in the Dark will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 3, at 6 p.m. at White Chimneys, 5117 Lincoln Highway, Gap. In addition to the meal and presentations by VisionCorps, which will benefit from the dinner, the event will include a silent auction. The silent auction will feature up to 35 items, including sports memorabilia, a chocolate basket, and a carpet cleaning kit. Valudes noted that past silent auctions have included experiences such as rides on the Strasburg Rail Road or a tour of WGAL. According to Valudes, the reception and silent auction start at 6 p.m., and the auction generally closes at 6:55 p.m. with an announcement. Attendees will find each dinner table has a variety of blindfolds or special goggles. “VisionCorps provides goggles that mimic various types of vision impairments, such as glaucoma,” explained Valudes, who noted some goggles will be scratched and others will be blacked out in places. “So you’re eating with that impairment (during the dinner).” She noted that participants may choose whether to use a blindfold or a particular pair of goggles. “They select how they want to experience (the meal),” said Valudes. Before the meal is served, VisionCorps will give a presentation about the purpose of the nonprofit organization, which offers a variety of services to the blind and people with low vision. The organization also discusses ways to help diners negotiate the exercise of eating dinner without their normal vision. “They will give tips on how (they teach) someone who has experienced a recent vision impairment to work their way around a plate,” explained

The painting was auctioned to raise funds for the Domestic Violence Service Program (DVS) of Community Action Partnership. Manser is giving a percentage of her book sales to the same organization. Manser has planned her author talks to be informal and relaxed events. “I will share a bit of my story and why I wrote the book,” she said. “The more we talk about it and set boundaries for these type of relationships … the more healing can happen,” she said, adding that she hopes to have a representative from DVS present. “Domestic Violence Awareness Month is October,” Manser noted, adding that DVS has a number of programs planned which may be found by visiting https://caplanc.org or by reading “Domestic Violence Services Plans Events” in this paper. She said she has always been a person who journals regularly. “(Emotional abuse is) a tricky subject,” she said, noting that other types of abuse receive more media attention, but she noted that emotional or psychological abuse can be dangerous as well. “It can cross the line and turn physical, or the person being abused can be so distraught they can hurt themselves,” she said, adding that it can be hard for an abused person to prove to others what is going on. “There’s a fear (in wondering), ‘Will anyone believe me?’” she said. “That was a big part of my book,” she added. Landis Homes volunteers with Friends of the Woods and Wetlands sample water and work to improve the environment at Leaman Woods.

Wetlands look for ways to help maintain and use the woods and wetlands,” said Linford Good, community design specialist with Landis Communities. The 50-member group works in several areas of environmental concern. The woods were originally farmland, and the flood plain was meadow used for grazing cattle. Sediment was removed from the flood plain in exchange for storm water management credits that were used in developing land outside the flood plain. “We were able to build more homes on land that would otherwise have been used for storm water retention,” explained Good. The Friends of the Woods and Wetlands formed a few years after the hybrid homes on the campus were built. Seeking to appreciate the blessings of the Landis Homes environment, the group set out to support the balance of the environment so that residents and visitors could enjoy the natural beauty. Good noted that one of the first jobs of the group members was to remove invasive plants, hand-pulling garlic mustard, burning bush, and

privet hedge, and planting native plants and trees, especially pawpaws. “In the flood plain it is a continuous (job) to keep invasives out,” explained Good, who noted that the Friends work with Land Studies, a professional organization in Lititz. Within the group are subgroups that engage in activities to support or encourage flora and fauna in the area. “One group is interested in planting milkweed to attract butterflies,” noted Good, who said he has seen monarchs in the clover field near the wood. “Another group is interested in bees,” he said pointing out the bee boxes meant to help increase the mason bee population on the campus. “There’s a group of birders that put out boxes for bluebirds, and they monitor them throughout the season,” he added. A segment is also working to track frogs, turtles, snakes, and other wetland creatures as they move into the area. Water quality is also important to the Friends. Kurtz Run, a spring-fed brook, runs through the campus and into the Conestoga Creek. Friends volunteer to work with the Lancaster County Conservation District to

monitor water quality. “They are trying to start a Kurtz Run Watershed Association to help with projects,” said Good. Good noted that the organization gives residents with the knowledge and passion the chance to preserve the area for the future. “By restoring these areas, it provided an opportunity for residents to volunteer in things they’re interested in, like natural habitats,” said Good. Landis Homes, an affiliate of Landis Communities, is home to 850 residents living in cottage, apartment, and hybrid homes, as well as in personal care and health care. Conestoga Valley Knocks off Penn Manor

CV field hockey celebrated a momentous win at Penn Manor on the first day of October, flipping the script to claim the 1-0 victory after having lost to the Comets by the same margin just two weeks earlier. With neither team able to break the goal line during the first three quarters, the defensive stalemate ended in the final quarter and the Bucks’ continued pressure paid off with a goal from Ellie Hershey. On October 4th, the Bucks hosted Warwick for a 0-0 draw in which neither team was able to claim the win despite extra minutes on the field, but the Buckskins still had plenty to celebrate as they highlighted the teams seven seniors: Lillian Buckwalter, Olivia Hess, Cassandra Malles, Xiomara Ruesta, Allyson Stauffer, Camille Weaver, and Sydney Weaver. Weaver was credited with fives saves against Penn Manor and Allyson Stauffer collected three against Warwick. The club currently holds a 6-7-1 record heading into the final stretch of the season. FOOTBALL CV football opened their league schedule with a 35-21 victory over the Elizabethtown Bears on October 1st. The Section Two opponents squared off in Elizabethtown, but it was the Bucks who owned the field opening up with a 21-0 run and marking every quarter with at least one trip to the end zone. “Taking control of the line of scrimmage was key to the victory,” pointed out head coach Gerad

Novak. “We maintained control of the ball, converted third-down plays and moved the chains, which led to three straight scoring drives.” Nick Tran ran in three of the five Buckskin TD’s including a 61-yard dash in the third, on his way to a total of 177 rushing yards. The other two Buckskin touchdowns took place when quarterback Macoy Kneisley, who threw a total of seven completions and 178 yards, connected with Aiden Johnson (37-yard pass) and Jaiyell Plowden (55-yard pass). “The offensive line did a great job of giving Macoy Kneisley time to make the right reads and throw the ball vertically down the field,” credited Novak. “[They] also opened some nice holes for Nick Tran to do some damage in the running game.” Supporting the offensive success was a defensive line that held the Bears scoreless in the opening quarter. “The defense came up big when we needed a big play,” Novak added. Robby Swift forced a fumble that led to a CV scoring possession, and Avery Tran provided a fourth quarter interception that squelched an Etown surge that had potential to turn the contest into a one-possession game. VOLLEYBALL The Lady Bucks made quick work of guests Octorara on an October 4th nonleague pairing, blanking the Braves 3-0 and marring Octorara’s previously undefeated record. Each game was close in the battle (25-17, 25-20, 25-22), but CV refused to surrender even one of

them led by an outstanding effort from Becca Hartranft with 10 kills, 17 digs, and 2 aces. Summer Getz was another key component of the Buckskin offense offering 26 assists to the effort and Kassie Horning made her presence known at the net with three blocks. GIRLS’ SOCCER Girls’ soccer suffered a trio of heartbreaking losses recently, falling to Penn Manor and Central York by the same count of 2-1, and slipping behind Hempfield 2-0 to close out September. Gabriella Neiman netted the Bucks goal against Central York on October 4th after a dish from Delainey VarelaKeen in the second half of play to cut a 2-0 deficit in half. The very next day it was VarelaKeen with the unassisted goal in the loss at Penn Manor to level the score at one apiece, but the Comets went on to net a late game goal to clinch the contest. Riley Houck was in goal for all three contests and gathered a total of 20 saves.

BOYS’ SOCCER A 2-0 loss to Penn Manor on October 5th and an 1-1 draw at Lower Dauphin on the 2nd marked the boys’ schedule. A late game goal from senior Caden Wanger spared CV from a loss to Lower Dauphin and the contest ended in a 1-1 tie after double overtime. CV had trailed LD 1-0 from the first half despite outshooting the Falcon’s 9-1. With just seven minutes remaining in regulation, Wanger buried a shot off an assist from Landen Sunday to propel the game into extra minutes. CROSS COUNTRY Both boys and girls earned split results in a tri-meet last Tuesday, collectively falling to Cedar Crest and claiming wins over Lebanon at the race held at South Hills Park. Seana Dougherty set the pace for the CV girls finishing just behind a pack of five Cedar Crest runners to take sixth place with a time of 22:26. Teammate Kylynn Frankford was just a few steps back

The first phase of community feedback through Engage Lancaster will remain open through Saturday, Oct. 30. A full list of events will be available on Engage Lancaster. The mayor’s administration, along with city council, will prioritize investments based on research, public input, and ranking criteria. Residents are encouraged to submit feedback online and attend council meetings to share input in person. Based on initial guidance from the U.S. Treasury Department, ARPA funds can be used in a few main ways: responding to COVID-19 and its negative economic impacts, replacing lost municipal revenue, and water and sewer infrastructure and broadband investments. Funds need to be committed by the end of 2024 and spent by the end of 2026. Funding decisions will not be made all at once.
