Because of its versatility, its mass appeal and its sheer dramatic value, the Bible is the greatest selling book of all time. The Bible2School program of Conestoga Valley Christian Community Ser vices (CVCCS) uses it as a story book, as a textbook and as an instruction manual for life.

“We feel that the Bible is the guidebook that God has given us to live our lives by,” said Lisa Horst, who’s been the president of CVCCS for 14 years. “The Bible teaches us how to relate to others, how to know right from wrong, how to treat others and how the greatest sacrifice that could ever be made saves our souls for eternity.” CVCCS recently kicked off

Coach Jankowski Playing Role He Was Meant to Play BY JEFF FALK

Twice now, Travis Jankowski has made the best out of a major league baseball opportunity. In each instance, putting others ahead of himself has played a huge role in his success. “Everyone had always said to me, ‘You’d make a good coach one day,’” said Jankowski. “Up until 2021, I was like, ‘I don’t know what you are talking about. I don’t see it.’ I was 29 going on 30, and it was a pivotal point in my career.” “I started thinking, ‘I never had a veteran take me under his wing,’” continued Jankowski. “‘I’m actually going to care about someone else more than myself.’ After a while, I was like ‘Huh, this is kind of cool; it’s kind of fulfilling. It’s time I made this game more about others than myself.’” Jankowski is in his first season as the Texas Rangers’ first-base coach. In addition to his in-game duties of keeping players on their toes, Jankowski teaches base-running, footwork and outfield defense. Making his transition to coaching a smooth one is the fact that Jankowski is less than a year removed from an 11-year playing career. He’s also only 35, and he spent the 2023 and 2024 seasons with Texas, where he played with some of the current Rangers players. T he R angers were 74-76 through the first 150 games of their 2026 season. “Coaching is relationships,” said Jankowski, a 2009 graduate of Lancaster Catholic High School. See Jankowski pg 6

in the fourth grade we are talking about discipleship,” said Horst. “The atmosphere is always fun and engaging. It is so great to see the kids ask questions and learn. Some of our kids have never heard of Jesus.” The participating children are broken into small groups of five students per instructor. A Bible story and lesson is shared with the students, and they are encouraged to dig deeper into the subject material through crafts and games. “The name reflects the mission of teaching the Bible to children during their public school day,” said Horst. “The mission of Bible2School is to teach truth and inspire hope to children.” CVCCS has been providing its Bible2School program to Smoketown Elementary School students since 2024, and 2026-27 is the first school year that it is being offered at Leola Elementary. A total of more than 30 students is involved with the religious course. “The Bible2School program continues to evolve every year,” said Horst. “Bible2School provides us with a curriculum, visual aids and craft projects which make teaching easy. (The Bible2School program) takes great care to update curriculum, and this year they developed another one for the fifth grade.” A social service agency that addresses needs in the Conestoga Valley School District, CVCCS operates a food bank and a clothing bank and offers programs that feed underserved children on weekends, provide children with school supplies and connect individuals with mentors or churches. Last year, CVCCS served a total of 7,758 people across all of its programs. “Our mission is to sow compassion and empower our clients to lead self-sufficient lives,” said Horst. “We believe that effective charity provides those in need with the opportunity to thrive through healthy relationships and accountability. We aim to focus our ministries and programs on individualized, holistic and transformative charity.” From 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 24, CVCCS is conducting a True Charity Workshop. “I just played in Texas two years ago. But I did question if the players were going to trust me completely. The relationships come from relatability, from building trust. It’s a really hard game. (Coaches) appreciate how hard the game is and how much work the guys put in.” After being released by the New York Mets in July of 2025, Jankowski was contemplating his next career step and considering trying to make a major league roster as a player out of 2026 spring training. Pretty much out of nowhere, Jankowski got a call from Texas manager Skip Schumaker, a man with whom he had had a great prior relationship. “He was like, ‘Hey, what are you doing next year? Do you want to coach? I want you to be my big league first-base coach with the Texas Rangers,’” said Jankowski. “I said, ‘OK, let me think about it. When do you want to start the interview process?’ He said, ‘Tomorrow.’ I talked to (my wife) Linds, and she said, ‘Do you know what? I think you’ve got

If you have questions about achieving financial stability, developing skills, understanding AI or navigating the tech world, Goodwill Keystone Area’s Wisdom Opportunity Wealth (WOW) is a great place to start. WOW offers one-on-one coaching, retirement and long-term planning , AI and tech literacy training, career and entrepreneurship guidance, budgeting and credit support and tools to keep you accountable. And all of its programs are provided free of charge. WOW began after Sue Soderburg retired from Goodwill as chief mission officer and wanted to leave a legacy program with the organization she’d served for more than 30 years. It started as an initiative focused on women and was called Women of Wealth. “In a lot of ways, women are still behind, especially when it comes to financial literacy,” said Taylor Gilbert, WOW program director. “We served a ton of women within the first and most of the second year of the program, but as word got out, there was so much interest in what we were doing, and we felt we were limiting the number of individuals we could help. We didn’t want to turn down anyone who wanted our services.” As Gilbert explained, the WOW program comes into a location - which could be a business, a school or any other group - and provides all programming, activities and take-home assignments, along with refreshments. “ T h i s i s n’t s o m e o ne coming in with a PowerPoint, giving their presentation and then you never hear from them again,” she said. “Our first priority before educating people is building trust and building that relationship with them. We want to know, ‘Where are you at in your journey with this topic? What do you know? How can we help you?’” W i t h e a c h p ro g ra m , WOW works to present information that’s relatable to the audience, whether that’s a group of senior citizens at a retirement

community or a bunch of preschoolers. Gilbert noted that feedback the organiz ation receives from teenagers is especially compelling. “Kids will say, ‘Can you please come back? We never knew this before,’” she said. “Their teachers touch on financial topics, but we go into depth about everything from the FAFSA to scholarships, renting your first apartment, what it looks like to get your first car.” WOW is unique to Goodwill Keystone, and the program can be offered on weekdays, evenings or weekends. “ We’ll come in over a lunchtime and do a program,” Gilbert said. “We’ll come in any time where we

sister Carolyn Hambrosky founded Lancaster Youth Productions in 2012, before passing along the directorship to Raine five years later. “At the beginning, the group met weekly in the summer to rehearse and held one performance a year,” said Raine. “It was well received by audiences and anticipated highly each summer by the participants. Over the years, the group continued to grow and began performing at local retirement homes and churches. I hope that people will be inspired to come and see our shows and support us as we continue to grow as an organization.” In late September, Hope Theater Company began rehearsals for its upcoming performance of “A Christmas Quartet” - a collection of four short plays all rolled into one holiday show which will be presented at 7 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 11, and at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 12, at Grace Fellowship Church of Ephrata. Just this past summer, Hope Theater Company staged the World War II story “Overcome” over three evenings and reached a total of 300 audience members. They are students, teachers, seniors, paramedics and homeschoolers. That wide array of individuals collaborate at practices and rehearsals to prepare for two or three productions each year. “The best part is probably the fun times and great friendships we gain from being a part of this group,” said Raine, who, along with stage manager and husband, Issac, resides in Ephrata. “Hope Theater Company extends beyond simply the shows - we also have movie and game nights and get-togethers.” “We are still trying to grow our public presence by posting on Facebook, advertising in local stores and also walking in some local parades,” said Raine. “What the public should know is that we are a Christian group dedicated to producing quality shows for God’s glory.” In March, Hope Theater Company officially came into being and was incorporated into a nonprofit

James Malone awarded a $100,000 state grant to the program at Goodwill’s store and donation center in Elizabethtown. “I’m proud to have helped secure funding for a program that empowers people to achieve financial health by teaching them how to budget and manage their resources,” Malone said. “Goodwill’s WOW program meets people where they are through par tnerships with organizations, like the L ancaster County Prison, to end cycles of poverty and give people a hand up into a better future.” Since its inception about three years ago, WOW has reached more than 2,000 individuals throughout 22 counties in southcentral Pennsylvania. This fall, Gilbert is launching a new series of tech literacy courses, focused on how to use programs like Microsoft Word and Excel.
