least of which are their faithbased missions. “Even though we ’re a small church, we can do big things,” said Jo Miller, who’s been the church’s mission coordinator for the last eight years. “It’s not just to better people’s lives; it’s to give people hope. One of the things that make Gifts That Give Hope so special is that it thrives in the no-judgment zone. The local nonprofit is currently gearing up for this year’s foray into the world of alternative gift giving. “We try to promote more charitable giving,” said Jenn Knepper, the founder of Gifts That Give Hope Lancaster. “I started to think about giving more meaningful gifts to my parents, things like promoting women’s education around the world. I felt like that was something my parents encouraged for me. I think it’s a chance to be creative, like what are the causes that are important to people?” Gifts That Give Hope Lancaster’s upcoming gift festival de-emphasizes material items and emphasizes experiences, altruism and charitable causes. This year’s 19th edition of the unique gift fair will be conducted from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 10, at Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. The event is free to attend, and all proceeds will benefit the participating nonprofits. “I’m always trying to make things run more smoothly,” said Knepper. “We change things based on feedback. Each year we’re just always trying to improve on how we reach people and engage with them. We’re connected with different nonprofits, and we try to promote the things that the nonprofits are doing. We all benefit when we’re connected to the

Whether through the eyes or the mind’s imagination, the act of visualization possesses the power to create moving images, bold stimuli and lasting impressions. Few endeavors reflect the mission of North Star Initiative (NSI) as well as the Red Sand Project. “Red sand is used because it immediately attracts your attention,” said Melinda Clark, who’s been the CEO of NSI for four years. “When you pour it on the sidewalk, it represents people who have fallen through the cracks. Filling the cracks symbolizes that we’re not willing to have people fall in the cracks. We will become a community where trafficking can end.” Recently, Clark, Ariana Sequino and Michelle Curiel, all members of the NSI team - a nonprofit dedicated to fighting human trafficking and exploitation - took advantage of an opportunity to participate in the national Red Sand Project. On the sidewalks of the heritage block near Penn Square in the city of Lancaster, participants poured red sand into the cracks between bricks. About 20 human trafficking opponents from the Lancaster County district attorney’s task force, the Lancaster YWCA and Zoe International joined NSI in a show of solidarity against the societal dilemma. “It’s a stirring project when it’s being done because it’s very visual,” said Clark. “It was both somber and joyful. People were starting to ask, ‘What is this?’ We told them, ‘Human trafficking is here, and we’re standing against it. That’s why we’re here.’ “I don’t think many people know about the Red Sand Project,” continued Clark. “The purpose is to drive awareness to the issue and the services that are available. We’re making a statement, and we want to make others aware. Trafficking is happening. We want people to know about North Star, because people are encouraged when they know there are resources. I keep running into people who don’t know about North Star and what we do.” According to Clark, the number one tool in attracting potential victims to human trafficking is social media, and force is only used in about three percent of the total human trafficking

I want people to know how much good we can do with a simple bag of school supplies.” Miller and fellow United Women of Faith members Marge Denlinger and Audrey Miller have sewn more than 200 drawstring school bags. Each of those bags was filled with four spiral notebooks, eight unsharpened pencils, one metal pencil sharpener, a dozen colored pencils, a single pink eraser, four pens and one 12-inch ruler that also includes metric markings. O nce t h e c l o t h b a g s w e re p a c k e d w i t h t h e items - all of which were donated by members of the church’s congregation o r p u rc h a s e d t h ro u g h fundraising efforts - they were delivered to Mennonite Central Committee in Akron, which distributes the supplies to needy children around the globe. “Not too many of the bags stay in the United States,” said Miller. “With the Mennonite Central Committee, we know the Gospel is being spread when the children are receiving these bags. One of these bags might be used by more than one child. To go to school, t h e y ne e d t h e s e b a s i c supplies.” Over the last 10 years, t h e U n i te d Wo m e n o f Fa i t h h a v e m a d e a n d donated about 3,600 bags filled with school supplies. One year, the group made nearly 400 bags alone. “I think you have to consider that some of these children are orphans and some of the families are making a couple of dollars a day,” said Miller. “How are they going to afford to buy these supplies? Freedom Walkers Fight the Good Fight One would be hard pressed to identify a more symbolic, empowering and compassionate Saturday morning. The Freedom Walk brings words to life, movement to ideas, unity to a cause and progress to a culture. “My favorite part is seeing individuals we’ve seen over the years who regularly receive our services show up and say, ‘This is the first step in my freedom,’” said Amy Thurston, the co-founder of Hope Inspire Love, who’s been the CEO for nine years. “Just seeing young men, fathers and their boys joining in. When I see them walk, I know no one knows their stories, but they do. Every year, we have people come up to us and say, ‘Thank you for doing this for me.’” The time is near for another installment of staunch human trafficking foe Hope Inspire Love’s inspiring trek for social change - the Freedom Walk. This year’s edition of the annual event will be conducted from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 3, at Musser Park, 135 N. Lime St., Lancaster. “Because it’s been so much in the news and so many nonprofits are offering services, there is so much awareness

about human trafficking,” said Thurston. “What people don’t know about is the trafficking going on online. Part of our goal is awareness, while helping people take the next step in independence and freedom. We get calls all the time.” The Freedom Walk festivities will begin around 9 a.m. when people begin filtering in for registration. There will be time for conversation and camaraderie before participants are addressed about the depths of the human trafficking problem. Black T-shirts and signs will be handed out, and a huge group photo will be taken before the 2-mile silent walk begins. The day will also include live music, a simulation tent and information tables manned by other organizations that are opponents of human trafficking, and a lunch will be served after the walk. “It’s a celebration of the beauty of collaboration,” said Thurston, a resident of Manheim Township. “We have 30 minutes of stage time when we talk about the why. It allows people to understand what they’re walking for. We want to invite healthy conversation.” In single file, the walkers will process quietly and

Runners to Go the Distance for SWAN

Runners are typically highly self-motivated individuals. In this particular instance, SWAN 4 Kids is providing a bit of external motivation. “We’re helping kids of all ages who have gone through trauma, kids who have one or the other parent incarcerated,” said Brittany Torres, the director of development for Scaling Walls a Note at a Time (SWAN) Lancaster. “We’re doing what we can do to help the kids. But we’re not just giving a helping hand to these kids; we’re helping to shape their future.” The charitable arm of HARTZ Physical Therapy stages an annual fundraiser called “Fall Blast” for local charities, and this year the organization has chosen SWAN L ancaster as its beneficiary. The 23rd annual Fall Blast will be conducted at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 3, at the Warwick School District’s John R. Bonfield Elementary School, 101 N. Oak St., Lititz. The Fall Blast will include a 5K run/ walk and a kids’ color run. “HARTZ Physical Therapy operates multiple locations throughout Lancaster County, including one near us,” said Torres. “ They heard about what we’re doing. They have really good events; good people show up and they support different nonprofits. It’s a family-friendly event for everyone.” Breakfast will be served that morning, and goodie bags will be distributed to participating adults and children. Prizes will be

earned by the top finishers, and awards will be given out in a number of different age categories. Runners can register for the 5K at www.hartzpt .com/community/fallblast-5k or at the race the day of the event. “ There are different opportunities, and people can get teams together,” said Torres, a resident of Ephrata. “It’s going to be super fun. We’re really creating a community event where people can come together. Lititz is just a great town. It’s just a great environment in general.” A ccording to SWA N, there are more than 3,000 kids in Lancaster who have at least one incarcerated parent. “The goal is to raise as much money as possible,” said Torres, “because every single dollar will go to help our kids.” SWAN Lancaster conducts its largest fundraiser, Summer Celebration, in July, and the music-based nonprofit also holds an annu al gol f o u t ing to raise funds. In addition, SWAN Lancaster is funded through grants, monthly donations, sponsorships and partnerships. “ There are incredible nonprofits throughout Lancaster County,” said Torres. “So, getting people to know what you do is huge. The work SWAN is doing is not temporary. Local Museums Receive State Grants Four Lancaster County institutions have received a total of more than $127,000 in Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission’s Cultural and Historical Support Grants. The organizations preserve history, inspire interest in science and nature, engage young children’s imaginations, and strengthen cultural identities. The recipients were Hands-on House Children’s Museum of Lancaster, which received $20,000; Lancaster Science Factory, $30,000; LancasterHistory.org, $47,000; and the North Museum of Nature and Science, $30,000. The grants provide state funding for the operational costs needed to maintain and preserve local heritage.

I think what they should know and expect from Reji Woods Productions is that every show is programmed by me and filled with genuine love, care and a desire to

give our audiences a good time. We have fun on that stage every time, and audiences should feel it in their seats.” Reji Woods Productions, which is funded primarily through performance contracts, produces as many as 10 shows each year. Those performances are staged at cultural series, churches, performing arts centers, dinner theaters, retirement communities and private venues. “Our goal is to bring quality, theme-driven cabaret experiences to the Lancaster County area,” said Woods, “all while providing a variety of entertainment options for our community. We love to bring positive energy and joy.” Reji Woods Productions was born from a solo cabaret produced by Woods in 2015. Since then, it has realized a fair share of success by adopting a people-first, community-oriented attitude. “The best part of Reji Wo o d s P ro d uc t i o n s i s the people,” said Woods. “Whether it’s the people I share the stage with or the audiences we entertain, it’s all about connection, and that’s the best part. My favorite thing to do, however, is to perform. Singing and connecting with an audience is the lifeblood of my existence. The Lancaster County Art Association (LCAA), 149 Precision Ave., Strasburg, has issued a call for artists to participate in the 90/90 Challenge on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 9 and 10.
