Woodcrest Schedules Annual Fundraiser

In 2017, Woodcrest Retreat added a Kids Camp Bonanza, complete with camp-style activities for children, during its annual benefit auction. The activities, which feature a variety of stations, such as crafts, a nature lesson, and camp games, proved so popular, Woodcrest made them a regular part of the event. This year’s Bonanza will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and include regularly scheduled activities from 9 to 11 a.m. and carnival games for a nominal fee from 12:30 to 3 p.m.

This year’s auction, which will be held on Saturday, Oct. 5, at Woodcrest Retreat, 225 Woodcrest Drive, Ephrata, will begin at 9 a.m. with an assortment of donated items going up for bids. Among these will be household items, home décor, fall plants, tools, and gift certificates. Large items and specialty items

will be sold at 10:30 a.m. Homemade bread will be sold at 10:30 a.m. as well.

Baked goods made by children who attend the fair may be entered to win a cash prize. Children may enter a cookie, a cookie bar, a pie, or a cake between 8:45 and 10:30 a.m. to be judged and then auctioned at 11:30 a.m. The special baked goods sale gives children who attend camp at Woodcrest a way to help support the ministry.

Gift certificates will be auctioned at 2 p.m., and remaining food will be auctioned at 3 p.m.

Kids Camp Bonanza activities will include a chance to try a sling shot, archery, wood burning, rocket launching, and more. A doughnut-eating contest will be held at 11 a.m. A nominal fee will be charged to ride the barrel train. A bounce house will be on-site throughout the event.

Garden Railways Tour Will Support Museum

Located in the courtyard of the Aspen personal care building at Landis Homes is a miniature setting that is home to a steam engine, three diesels, a trolley, two train stations, and a number of houses, churches, and businesses. “We call it the Garden Railroad Village,” said Bob Landis, one of the members of the club that keeps the trains moving from spring to fall.

The village will be one of 10 stops on the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania’s 13th annual Garden Railways Tour on Sunday, Oct. 6. The self-guided, See Garden Railways pg 4

“This will be our sixth season, and we will have six concerts,” said Jessica Pavelko, public relations and marketing director with The Trust Performing Arts Center, 37 N. Market St., Lancaster. “We will have an assortment of concerts and theater.”

The Trust season will kick off on Thursday, Oct. 3, with Mike Block, cellist and vocalist, and Sandeep Das, playing the tabla, a percussion instrument that originated in India.

The fourth annual Renovators’ Home Tour, benefiting Lancaster Lebanon Habitat for Humanity, will feature clever use of space and innovative design ideas through renovations in Manheim Township and Lancaster homes on Sunday, Oct. 6, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

An example of DIY teamwork can be found in James and Lauren Michaud’s home, located on McGrann Boulevard in Grandview Heights. Despite only living in the home two years, the young couple has utilized their talents for the visual arts, wood crafting and iron work throughout their home. James, a teacher in the Manheim Township Middle School, custom built much of the furniture in the home and used trees from their property as the material.

The Suicide Prevention Coalition of Lancaster County will host an educational presentation by the Lancaster/Lebanon staff from the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs. The program will be held from noon to 1 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 26, at Lancaster Vet Center, 1817 Olde Homestead Lane, Suite 207, Lancaster.

The presentation will provide an overview of the services offered at the Lancaster and Lebanon Veteran Centers. It will discuss the option of Mental Health America’s free guidance and support available to help navigate residents through the mental health system locally, including how to access local support services, as well as crisis intervention teams, that work within in the county.

Church Plans Organ Concert First Reformed Church, 40 E. Orange St., Lancaster, will host an organ concert on First Friday, Oct. 4. Organist Larry Hershey, a Lancaster County native, will play on the vintage 1958 analog Allen organ.

The organ is housed behind an 18th-century Tannenberg organ screen in the balcony of the historic 1854 church.

The concert is part of the First Friday “Organic Reflections” series, a gift to the Lancaster community from First Reformed Church, a center-city congregation of the United Church of Christ. All concerts are 30 minutes in length and begin at 8 p.m. each First Friday. Doors open at 7:30 p.m.

Admission is free. All are welcome to attend.

“That (piece is) very rarely heard because you have to have an amazing pianist, amazing singer, and amazing soprano,” said Bigley, who noted that because Owens is gaining a reputation as a crossover artist, some jazz pieces will be played as well.

On Thursday, April 2, at 7:30 p.m., the performance will include the “Four Seasons” pieces by Vivaldi and Piazzolla with Dutch violinist Carla Leurs and the group Cugnon Consort. “People look forward to ‘The Four Seasons,’ and it will be juxtaposed with the ‘Four Seasons of Buenos Aires’ by Piazzolla, a famous Argentinian composer, so it has a tango feel to it,” said Bigley, who said that Leurs was the first artist to perform at The Trust. “We have been trying to get her back ever since,” he noted adding that Leurs is teaming with some of the top young musicians in Europe in Cugnon. “It will be a really fiery concert,” said Bigley.

According to Pavelko, last year’s performance of “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe” was so well attended, it will return on Saturdays, Nov. 30, Dec. 7, Dec. 14, and Dec. 21, at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. and on Friday, Dec. 20, at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. “We will make it a holiday tradition,” said Pavelko.

The Trust will also feature Row House Forums, and the Square Halo Gallery featuring art inspired by the Christian faith will hold exhibits.

Woodcrest is a nonprofit organization that provides summer camp experiences yearly for more than 1,500 children on 110 acres of woodland. A family campground and year-round retreat facility are also available.

Pavelko characterized the second concert, “Seen” - a song cycle by Kristen Brewer - as “a women’s Bible study in concert form.” “(Brewer) touches on key moments of women in the Bible who are in the lineage of Jesus Christ,” said Pavelko. Brewer will perform the piece Thursday and Friday, Nov. 21 and 22, at 7:30 p.m. each night.

Calmus is a German a capella ensemble, which will be performing in America for the first time. “(Calmus) won the German equivalent of the Grammy,” said Robert Bigley, executive director of The Trust. “(The members) are a very respected European vocal ensemble.”

Pavelko noted that The Trust acoustics are especially suited to a capella. “They will be performing some of their personal favorites, and that will be our Christmas concert,” said Pavelko of the show planned for Friday, Dec. 13, at 7:30 p.m.

For Valentine’s Day 2020, The Trust will host VOCES8 for the third time. “(They will sing) love songs from multiple genres and languages,” said Bigley.

“They are well received by our audience,” recalled Pavelko. “They will do a number of classical pieces and crossover music, and their voices are absolutely beautiful in the great hall.” VOCES8 will perform at The Trust on Thursday and Friday, Feb. 13 and 14, 2020.

In March of 2020, soprano Amy Owens, pianist Kendra Bigley, and clarinetist Doris Hall-Gulati, who won a Grammy Award in 2019 for her solo in Lansing McLoskey’s oratorio titled “Zealot Canticles,” will perform Schubert’s “The

family-friendly tour will be open from 1 to 5 p.m., with tour sites in Manheim, Lititz, Lancaster, Wrightsville, and Coatesville. There is a cost for the tour, with children age 5 and under admitted free of charge.

According to Landis, the 25-by50-foot area that now holds the tracks and trains was a lot smaller when the club first laid it out in 2005. “(We started) with a couple of tracks and a minimal amount of money,” recalled Landis, who added that the club has expanded the layout significantly. “I have been here four years, and we have added many buildings and four trains in that time.”

G-gauge trains, which can be used indoors as well, travel on approximately 300 feet of track. One of the diesels pulls a passenger car, and another pulls freight cars. The third pulls coal cars and a whimsical Lifesavers car. The trolley makes regular stops, but sometimes a club member replaces the trolley with a brightly colored ladybug that zips around the tracks.

The trains whistle, and the bells ring.

Buildings that were not constructed by club members are German made, and some are ceramic. The layout includes a miniature replica of the Lancaster train station, along with a tiny Harrisburg station. Kim Klinepeter of Mechanicsburg, daughter of club member Bruce Allison, is working on a replica of Hans Herr House for the garden. There is a mill at the east end of the layout, and a water tank is

available to service the steam engine.

Throughout the garden, most of the vegetation is natural to the area, with moss mixed in with the plants. A few of the plants surrounding the pond are artificial. “We have a fountain and a couple of fishermen there,” said Landis. “There’s a gazebo.”

The garden opens in May and closes in October. During the regular season, the garden is generally open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. It is also open for special occasions, such as Father’s Day, Mother’s Day, and Grandparents’ Day. Club member John Buckwalter has done the math to calculate how far the trains travel during a typical season. “They run approximately from Landis Homes to Des Moines, Iowa, or Halifax, Nova Scotia, or Tampa, Fla.,” said Buckwalter. “(That’s) 1,023 miles per season.”

Garden Railways Tour tickets may be purchased in all Stauffers of Kissel Hill garden center stores and in the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania’s museum store, 300 Gap Road, Strasburg, during regular business hours. “Unborn: Please Keep Me.� Jane’s mission is to use the beautiful things in music, media and art to convey eternal truth and honor the dignity of every life.

In June 2014, Jane was diagnosed with a brain tumor that was considered inoperable by many of the most renowned neurosurgeons in the U.S. Through a series of events and her connection with the filmmaker and actor Bruce Marchiano, she found a surgeon who could safely remove the tumor and restore her to a healthy life. The following year, in February 2015, she underwent life-saving endoscopic brain surgery in Los Angeles. The tumor posed serious risks to her critical nerves and brain stem, but she is able to walk, talk, sing, hear, and see today.

Event To Aid Kensill Fund For Hope The Kensill Fund for Hope benefit auction will take place on Saturday, Sept. 28, at the Leola United Methodist Church, 7 W. Main St., Leola. The Kensill Fund for Hope is a

nonprofit scholarship and educational foundation established in 1995 that was named in honor of the late Rev. Frank Kensill, whose goal was to provide educational opportunities for inner-city youths at Mid-Town Parish, the church he served in Philadelphia. These opportunities include after-school programs for students in grade school through high school, as well as scholarships for students continuing their education after high school.

“The 24 Hour Plays” Slated Creative Works of Lancaster will present a special night of theater, “The 24 Hour Plays: Lancaster,” on Saturday, Oct. 5, at 7 p.m. at The Stone Independent School, 480 New Holland Ave., Lancaster.

This is the ninth year for “The 24 Hour Plays: Lancaster,” a project that has inspired 62 new works and has brought hundreds of local and regional theater artists together.

Six writers, six directors, 25 actors, and one production team will write, rehearse, and perform six short plays in a 24-hour period. The process will begin on the evening of Friday, Oct. 4, with writers choosing actors from a pool of talent. The six writers will work through the night and hand their work to directors early Saturday morning, the day of the performance. After negotiating for their choice of play, directors, along with their play’s actors and a crew of stage technicians, will prepare for the 7 p.m. performance.

Since its inception in New York City in 1995, The 24 Hour Plays have been performed for audiences throughout the United States and the world, attracting both professional and amateur theater artists. The upcoming Lancaster production will feature veteran members of the central Pennsylvania theater scene working alongside artists who may be new to the audience.

“The 24 Hour Plays: Lancaster” will debut Creative Works’ new ticket pricing structure: pay-what-you-decide (PWYD). While-pay-what-you-can pricing asks patrons to pay for a show before they see a performance and is traditionally used as a limited-time promotional offer, PWYD allows patrons to reserve their tickets ahead of time and pay after the performance.

Creative Works intends to continue using this pricing model for all of its future events. PWYD allows all patrons to assess the value of a performance for them individually and removes the risk of spending money up front on a new performance they might not traditionally attend with a traditional ticket pricing structure.

With the introduction of PWYD, Creative Works will never turn away a potential audience member due to financial limitations. All tickets are free to reserve, and there is no obligation or suggested minimum to pay. Tickets can be reserved at www.creativelancaster.org. Reservations are highly encouraged, as availability may be limited at the box office on the night of the performance.

Hope and life’s purpose will be explored through a film featuring Rwandan John Gasangwa at Lifetree Café on Tuesday, Oct. 1. Lifetree Café is located at Emmaus Road Café, 1886 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster.

Doubles action has been more of the same, as the single athletes join forces and the addition of Nina Kramer and Jessica Chen make up the third pair. All duos made quick work of the opposition, and left a trail of decisive victories in their wake.

“They continue to encourage and support each other which becomes

contagious,” added Gregg.

The squad has only met one loss this year, delivered by Manheim Township, putting them just behind the Blue Streaks in the Section one standings. In order to reach the LL League Team tournament, the team must finish within the top two places of their section, making each upcoming match pivotal to their standings.

“The focus for every match is important. In addition, each player is working on individual career goals,” continued Gregg. “We are playing one

FIELD HOCKEY Win after win led to last Thursday’s league showdown between the top two contenders of Section One, with CV and Penn Manor both entering the contest with flawless league records of 5-0, but only the Buckskins emerged with the clean slate untarnished, taking the contest 1-0.

Defense defined the first half, with neither club registering a goal before the break.

Though the Comets registered more shots, outshooting the Bucks 7-6, as well as earning an impressive 14 corners, it was the accuracy of CV’s Carli Eberly that sealed the game, hitting the golden goal nine minutes into the second half.

getting stronger every game, with hard, well-placed shots and are using their speed to eliminate players all over the field,” praised head coach Kelly Dearolf.

The previous weekend the team blanked Ephrata 4-0. This time three goals came off Livingston’s stick and Claire Ortiz provided the fourth.

Ephrata did manage to create a few opportunities on the opposite end of the field, firing off six shots on goal, but B. Eberly was on guard with all six saves.

“Defense is doing a great job working together to tackle early and limit the number of shots on goal,” Dearolf explained. “The shots they are getting are being kicked away by

our goalkeeper, Brooke Eberly.”

VOLLEYBALL Going two-for-three in a weeks’ time, CV volleyball picked up wins against Warwick and Daniel Boone, and slipped behind Cedar Crest.

Thursday’s trip to Warwick’s court resulted in a 3-2 Lady Bucks victory after a hard fought five-set battle (25-15, 20-25, 23-25, 25-17, 15-12).

After CV shot ahead in the first game, the Warriors came back to take the next two, but a tenacious Buckskin squad with a strong serving game turned the tide back for the final two games. CeCe Leininger and Maddie Glick each dished three aces, Lexi McEvoy put together 12 kills and four blocks, Charlize Miller supplied 30 assists, and Jenna Sweitzer had 18 digs.

Tuesday registered a loss to Cedar Crest, 3-1, but each game was determined by the slimmest of margins, with Cedar Crest only earning a total of four points more over the course of the contest (28-26, 25-23, 21-25, 25-21).

After the Falcons edged ahead for two-point victories in the first two games, the Buckskins took one back with a four-point win in the third.

Savannah Byers fired a staggering 15 aces at the Falcon defense to dominate the serving game. Leininger powered 17 kills, supported by Miller’s 33 assists to pace the offense.

On defense, Rebecca Hartranft came up with 18 digs, and Leininger put up a block, but the Falcons managed to produce a final run to claim the contest after four games.

The previous Friday, the girls picked up a nonleague win, besting Daniel Boone in a 3-1 match (25-16, 28-26, 18-25, 25-14).

Leininger delivered 16 kills in the victory, working well off Miller’s 30 assists. Glick powered a trio of aces, and Sweitzer defended with 10 digs.

three goal lead by the half to cruise to victory.

Ana Weis tucked in the first of two goals after only three minutes on the field, followed quickly by another from Gabriella Barone-Graybill.

Just before the half, Madison Delgado sent a shot into the netting, her eighth goal of the season and third in the week. Weis’ second goal came eight minutes into the second half to give the squad a comfortable lead for the duration of the contest.

In last Tuesday’s 2-0 triumph over Cedar Crest, Delgado was the only player to score and produced both goals in the latter half. Delgado converted the successes ten minutes apart, after 49 scoreless minutes, with assists from Kayla Weaver and Delainey Varela-Keen.

Alyson Riggle didn’t see a lot of action as the CV keeper, but she grabbed one save, and the defensive line firmly guarded the backfield to preserve the shutout.

CROSS COUNTRY The CV girls picked up another team win during their split results at home last Tuesday. Hosting Elizabethtown and Penn Manor, the CV girls put up a strong effort with six harriers breaking into the top 15, finishing ahead of Penn Manor and behind Elizabethtown in the team comparisons.

Elizabethtown was formidable in the race, crossing three of the top five finishes, but the other two in the top five were sporting CV colors; Kylynn Frankford glided into third with a time

of 21:36, and Kate Kmieczak was just steps behind in fourth (21:38).

Next to cross for CV was Brittany Johns (22:11) and Kayla Mongiovi (22:25) good enough for seventh and eighth respectively. Emily Castronova’s 22:55 put her in 10th and Sydney Harris clocked a 24:41 for 15th.

For the boys, there wasn’t a team win, but individual improvement was seen in the ranks with Conestoga’s Emmanuel Gitonga cruising to a thirdplace finish in 17:31, and Jesse Kanagy crossing in eighth, completing the course in 18:28.

Adam Harris (19:20), and Micah Aldrich (19:31) claimed 12th and 15th for the Buckskins.

FOOTBALL Buckskin football suffered a 49-14 blow during their September 13th trip to Lampeter-Strasburg for the annual Lampeter Bowl, forcing them to turn

over possession of the trophy they had gained in last years’ 20-7 victory.

L-S defense was tight, converting an interception early on, and quickly returning to the end zone to go up four possessions in the initial period.

CV created their first success just before the half when quarterback Bradley Stoltzfus found Eddie Hernandez for a 13-yard touchdown pass to put the Bucks on the board.

The Pioneers weren’t done though, and amassed 49 points before the Buckskins were able to answer again, this time CV’s James Williams carried the football for a 75-yard run in the fourth. Buckskin kicker, Nathan Heck, went two-for-two in PATs in the loss.

“Turnovers killed us against L-S,” acknowledged head coach Gerad Novak. “Our focus this week will be on avoiding turnovers and proper execution.”

Joining Forces For The Community

Many of the churches of LampeterStrasburg (L-S) School District have combined forces to host two special events in previous years. Now, they have further collaborated to make Strasburg Day and CommUNITY 5K one great affair.

“We’ve combined two events, and that’s very cool,” said Bob Bronkema, pastor at First Presbyterian Church of Strasburg.

Willow Street Mennonite Church member Karen Bender, who has helped to organize the 5K race, noted that both events fell on the same day last year.

The race was held at Lampeter Church of the Brethren (LCB), and Strasburg Day took place at the Strasburg Jaycee Park.

Many people who participated in the 5K also planned to attend the Strasburg event. “During that day, the conversation started,” Bender said. “It just made a whole lot of sense.”

The CommUNITY 5K was launched six years ago to raise money for the L-S Homes of Hope program. LCB has hosted the race for the past five years, and while the committee is sad to leave the 5K’s first home, it is excited to offer race participants a different course with new challenges.

The sixth annual CommUNITY 5K and third annual Strasburg Day will be held on Saturday, Oct. 19, at the Strasburg Jaycee Park, 218B Miller St., Strasburg. Registration

for the 5K will be open from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m., and the race will start at 9 a.m. The course will primarily follow paved roads throughout the park and the borough and will be stroller-friendly.

A cost has been set to participate in the 5K, with discounts for multiple people and for registering by Tuesday, Oct. 1. Registrations received after Oct. 1 will not be guaranteed an event T-shirt. The proceeds from the 5K will be used to fund the continued operation of the house that opened since last year’s race. Homes of Hope provides transitional housing for families at risk of homelessness.

“We have a house, and we put our first family through,” Bender said. “We spent the first five years of the 5K preparing for this.”

Bender noted that the initial family has moved on to permanent housing and the organization is now seeking a second family.

Refreshments and door prizes will be distributed after the race. The top male and female runners will receive gift cards, and the first finisher in every age group will be given a commemorative beverage glass.

Race participants and spectators will be encouraged to stick around for Strasburg Day, which will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The event will feature children’s games, a bounce house, face painting, and a cornhole tournament. Piercing Word will give several performances of Scripture, with the first at 11:15 a.m. A chicken barbecue meal will be served at 11:30 a.m. and

continue as supplies last. The organizers are planning for at least 450 people.

Everything will be free of charge, and door prizes will be awarded.

“The churches (of the Strasburg Ministerium) are able to bless the families and folks of the Strasburg community,” said Strasburg Mennonite Church pastor John Meck. “(Working together to host Strasburg Day) is a tangible sign of Jesus’ prayer in John 17 that we would be one,” Bronkema added.

Celebrating 50 Years Of Preschool, Tea Time Among the dozens of booths that will be at the West Lampeter Fair on Wednesday through Friday, Sept. 25 to 27, the space hosted by Willow Street Mennonite Church (WSMC) has been designed to be a bit different. Instead of showcasing products or only handing out informational pamphlets, the space will be filled with child-friendly activities, including a large corn bin with many toys.

“We want to celebrate with the community,” said Lindsey Stiger, church member and Tea Time ministry leader. “Come and hang out.”

The reason for the celebration is the 50th anniversary of Willow Street Preschool, which WSMC launched in 1969 at its facility, 399 E. Penn Grant Road, Willow Street. Tea Time was also started that year by women who wanted something to do while their children were in preschool.

“It’s a ministry that has flourished for 50 years,” said preschool director Marcia Harnish. “Back when we started, (the concept of preschool) was very new.”

WSMC was one of the first congregations in Lancaster County to start a preschool, and it was first in Lancaster Conference, reported lead pastor Joe Sherer.

“It was intended to be for the community. The vast majority of students are not from our congregation,” Sherer shared.

Willow Street Preschool offers classes for children ages 2 to 5. These range from a one-day-a-week play group for 2-yearolds to a four-day class for 4- and 5-yearolds. Classes meet from 9 to 11:30 a.m. on weekdays and offer opportunities for children to develop socially, academically, emotionally, and spiritually.

“We’re very passionate about loving children, providing a safe environment, pointing toward Jesus, and making learning fun,” Harnish remarked. “We encourage Christian values. Our staff members consider this a ministry, not just a job.”

Kindergarten readiness is a goal for the older children.

“If the family and student feel successful, they will be confident heading into kindergarten,” Stiger said. “We want children to feel smart and valuable, to feel they can do this. That really matters (for a positive kindergarten experience).”

Tea Time, although started for preschool parents under a different name, has grown to include women of all ages and stages of life. Gatherings are held from 9:15 to 11:15 a.m. on Thursdays from Sept. 12 to May 7.

The group strives to promote friendship

and other refreshments will be served, and there will be space to relax.

“Then Sings My Soul: Beloved Hymns and Songs Inspired by the Ministry of Billy Graham” will be presented by LeeP Productions LLC at locations across central Pennsylvania and beyond from Sunday, Sept. 29, through Sunday, Dec. 1.

“Then Sings My Soul,” an original musical presentation, will feature four professional vocalists from the Lancaster area - Bryson Buffington, Sarah Poague, Kat Prickett, and Ric Zimmerman - with Jon Rider as cover. Pianists will include Lynette Eby and Katrina King.

Highlighting historical musical moments of the 1950s and 1960s, the vocalists will perform hymns made famous by George Beverly Shea, Dale Evans and the ministry of the Rev. Billy Graham. The program will include a look at the history behind some of the most famous hymns and songs of faith, most of which were made famous by, or written by people saved at, Billy Graham’s crusades. Featuring 30 favorites such as “How Great Thou Art,” “I’d Rather Have Jesus,” “His Eye Is on the Sparrow,” and “Just As I Am,” the program will also include an old-fashioned hymn sing.

The show will travel to churches and retirement communities in the Lancaster County area this fall, as well as to Lebanon, Carlisle, and the Johnstown area.

Admission is free at all locations, and reservations are not required. At the majority of performances, a freewill offering

will be accepted, with a portion of the proceeds being donated to the Billy Graham Library and the remainder helping to take the program on the road free of charge.

A calendar of topics has been prepared and may be picked up at the West Lampeter Fair. Guest speakers will lead Bible studies and presentations on various topics. Meetings will also be dedicated to pumpkin painting, Christmas caroling at Willow Valley Retirement Communities, and spa activities. To foster close connections, the attendees will be placed in small groups of eight to 10 people who can keep in touch between gatherings. Stiger noted a team has been formed to care for women as they walk through difficult circumstances such as infant loss, miscarriage, and suicide.

“We want to fill these women up with easy fellowship and food so they can feel encouraged and encourage their families and neighbors,” Stiger commented. “Healthy families make healthy communities.”

Trust Plans Columbia Architectural Tour

On Saturday, Sept. 28, the Historic Preservation Trust (HPT) of Lancaster County will host the Columbia Architectural Tour, showcasing the beauty of buildings dating from the 1700s to the 1930s. “Each of the 25 sites is significant, and that’s why we picked it to be part of the tour,” explained Matt Barley, HPT board member and tour committee chair.

The HPT was established in the 1960s in response to the urban renewal happening in Lancaster, and Barley said that since then a walking tour of a borough or town in Lancaster County has been offered to the public approximately every two years. The mission of HPT, then and now, is to encourage and facilitate historic preservation throughout the county. “At the Trust, we educate, we collaborate, and we celebrate, and the tour hits all three of those,” explained Barley.

“You’ve got to continually be educating because it’s so easily forgotten.”

“The tour is about Lancaster County as a whole,” said Barley, noting that past tours have highlighted preservation in areas such as Marietta, Ephrata, Strasburg, and Bowmansville. “Having Columbia for this year’s tour seems to parallel the exciting things that are happening there.”

Columbia is known to some as the jewel

of the Susquehanna and still others as the Brooklyn of Lancaster, but organizers have promoted the Columbia Architectural Tour as a chance for people to see why some are calling Columbia “the Paris of Pennsylvania.”

Barley, who resides in Columbia, admits that the phrase began somewhat in jest, but the more he considered it, the more it stuck.

“The way that Columbia is laid out makes it very walkable, and it has a lot of green spaces and parks,” said Barley.

Barley said that the ColumbiaWrightsville bridge, which is one of the stops on the tour, is perhaps the most architecturally interesting structure in the county. Construction on the bridge began in 1929 and was completed in 1930. The oldest building on the tour is Wright’s Ferry Mansion, built in 1738 and home to the famous Susanna Wright. Educated in England, Susanna helped to pioneer the oncethriving silk industry in Columbia and corresponded with intellectuals like Benjamin Franklin throughout her lifetime.

The guided exterior walking tours will be led by architectural designers and are set to begin at 10 a.m. and depart every half-hour through 3 p.m. on Sept. 28. Participants must check in for the tour at the Columbia Market House, 15 S. Third St., Columbia, to receive wristbands and a tour

Although 25 properties are included in the tour, not all of those will be part of the guided portion of the tour. Tourgoers will each receive a 75-page booklet including historical background and anecdotes for each of the sites, and they may explore the other properties on their own during tour hours. A trolley will be running on a loop throughout town as another mode of transportation for participants to reach all of the sites.

Admission to the Turkey Hill Experience, Wright’s Ferry Mansion, and the National Watch and Clock Museum is included with each tour ticket. Separate ticket prices have been set for HPT members and for nonmembers, as well as for children. The tour is familyfriendly, and a treasure hunt for children will be offered.

Farmers Day Association Plans Fair

The 2019 New Holland Farmers Day Association Fair will be held from Wednesday, Oct. 2, through Saturday, Oct. 5, on Main Street, Roberts Avenue, Franklin Street, and Fulton Street. The fair will kick off on Oct. 2, with the parade, which will begin at 7 p.m. A number of marching bands are scheduled to participate in the parade’s Spectacle of Bands competition, which awards prizes in a number of categories, including the Cup of Honor. The 2018 Cup of Honor winner was from Daniel Boone High School. The winning band will stop at the judges’ stand to receive the award and then perform for spectators.

The fair will also feature a midway, exhibits in a range of categories, games, and a variety of food vendors.

According to Linda DiBartolo, concession manager with the Farmers Day Association, the 88th annual fair will focus on bringing back some cherished events and activities. First, under the direction of parade manager Paulene Redding, the tugof-war will be held on Thursday, Oct. 3,

Separate auctions will include the general auction, the children’s auction, the quilt auction, the theme basket auction, the silent auction, the heifer auction, the coin auction and two pole barn auctions.

The two-day event may have as many as five auctions taking place at once.

Foundation’s Fundraisers Lead To Treatment Hope

It has been eight years since Samantha Brazzo, now an 11-year-old in West Hempfield Township, was diagnosed with limbgirdle muscular dystrophy type 2i (LGMD2i), a rare and progressive form of muscular dystrophy. At the time, treatments and cures were wished for, but awareness of the disorder was minimal, and research was nearly nonexistent. To change that and to improve the lives of Samantha and others with LGMD2i, Samantha’s parents, Keith and Kelly Brazzo, formed what is now the Cure LGMD2i Foundation.

In those eight years, the Brazzos’ foundation has awarded more than $550,000 in research grants, with $116,500 distributed in the last year. The foundation has supported 26 different programs, and two significant treatments are on the horizon.

“People talk about ‘one of these days,’ but that day has come,” said Kelly, who is the foundation’s president and

CEO. “It’s about to take off. We’re pretty thrilled, to say the least.”

This past Labor Day weekend, the foundation co-sponsored the first National LGMD Conference in Chicago, which turned into an international event, thanks to the magic of social media. More than 400 people representing greater than 20 countries attended the conference, where they discussed various aspects of life with and research into the more than 30 types of limb-girdle muscular dystrophy. “If we all come together, we’re more appealing to drug companies, and we benefit from building community,” Kelly remarked.

Kelly related that she was especially touched by meeting a 17-year-old boy from the Netherlands who was the first person to be successfully treated in a clinical trial four years ago. “I just lost it. I bawled,” Kelly said.

“I’ve been telling Sammy for years, ‘You will get better.’ I’ve been cautiously optimistic, but now I have data.”

Also in attendance at the conference were two companies, ML Bio Solutions and AskBio, that are gearing up for human trials

of promising treatments. ML Bio Solutions has identified a sugar molecule missing in people with LGMD2i, and the trial of a medication to replace it will begin at the end of October. The Cure LGMD2i Foundation has supported the research into the medication.

AskBio is preparing for a clinical trial with gene therapy. Researchers are predicting that this treatment will work well with ML Bio Solution’s product and the combination will essentially be the cure for LGMD2i. In the event of successful trials, it can take five years to bring the treatments to market, but Kelly is encouraged by the progress.

“Dreams are coming true,” Kelly commented. “Eight years ago, these are things we never would have thought would happen.”

The Cure LGMD2i Foundation has raised a significant portion of its funds through its signature game night. Two years ago, the organization added a golf outing. This year, the ninth annual game night will be held on Saturday, Oct. 5, from 6 to 11 p.m. at Eden Resort, 222 Eden Road, Lancaster.

Spring Gulch RV Campground, 475 Lynch Road, New Holland, celebrated its annual First Responders Weekend during the weekend of Sept. 7 and 8. The campground has hosted First Responders Weekend for more than 20 years.

Spring Gulch RV Campground holds the celebration as a way to give back to local first responders. The campground

estimates there were nearly 100 first responders and family members taking part in the weekend’s festivities.

In addition to showing appreciation to local first responders, the event gave campers a chance to learn more about what first responders do. Children were able to explore a fire truck visit and even use the fire hose.
