CSF Fundraiser Planned

Student leaders of the Lancaster Catholic High School (LCHS) marching band were excited to be partnering with the school’s Mini-THON organization, which supports Four Diamonds at Penn State Hershey Children’s Hospital. “(The) theme (of the show) follows a child going through cancer,” explained Megan Lyle, marching band president and brass music section leader. The seven-minute fall drill, themed “This World of Words and Meanings,” will utilize four pieces of music to represent four stages of a child’s journey with cancer. The pieces will also symbolize the qualities represented by each of the four diamonds, acording to a story written by Christopher Millard, a See LCHS Marchers pg 8

Lancaster Catholic High School band leaders (from left) Megan Lyle, Abby Francis, Katy Arnold, Rebecca Ressel, Sebastian Clemmer, Cate Lopez, and Erik Graybill worked with about 50 other band members to master the fall drill, called “This World of Words and Meanings,” during band camp, which was held at the school in August.

When Amber Pavalko of Stevens signed on back in February to organize unite@night, an event that raises funds for CSF (Chiari and Syringomyelia Foundation), she had no idea what her future held. Pavalko has been fighting Chiari malformation, a syndrome that is associated with a variety of other physical problems, and Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) and syringomyelia since 2013. “I saw that there wasn’t (a fundraising event for CSF) here, so I wanted to do that,” said Pavalko. “That was before I needed four surgeries.” Pavalko has emerged from those surgeries feeling better than she had in years, allowing her more energy to plan the unite@night Lancaster CSF Walk for 2018, set for Friday, Sept. 21, at the Kiwanis Pavilion at the Manheim See CSF Fundraiser pg 9

Herb Fest Transplanted To Leola For 2018 David Kim Performance To Benefit “Messiah” Sing-Along By Ann Mead Ash

Barbara Dagen, a member of the Conestoga Herb Guild and one of the organizers of the guild’s annual Herb Fest, is hoping the annual celebration’s move to Leola will grow on attendees. “We want people to know there’s a new location,” noted Dagen. This year’s Herb Fest will be held on Saturday, Sept. 8, at the Upper Leacock Township War Memorial Building, 54 W. Main St., Leola, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The War Memorial Building may be found along Route 23 about 6 miles north of See Herb Fest pg 3

When violinist David Kim performs at the Calvin and Janet High Fine Art Center at Lancaster Mennonite School, 2176 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster, on Tuesday, Sept. 18, at 7:30 p.m., the event will benefit another musical presentation - the “Messiah” SingAlong - which has been held each spring and winter in Lancaster and Chester counties for more than 20 years. The “Messiah” Sing-Along is a musical event that includes no rehearsals and features volunteer singers and musicians. According to conductor Clair Leaman, the event is unique because people can just show up and sing. The piece is treated as a performance, but Leaman noted that sometimes people in the audience sing along too. The
