For Lancaster AAPI, Diversity Is the Spice of Life BY JEFF FALK
The world would be a pretty dull place if we were all alike, if we all did the same things and if we all thought the same way. Lancaster Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (Lancaster AAPI) promotes diversity and celebrates all the things that make us different. But the social group also salutes the things we have in common.
In the process of acceptance, understanding and familiarity are essential early steps. “That’s what it’s all about, finding people with whom we have things in common,” said Cindy Lam Guo, president and one of the founding members of Lancaster AAPI. “If you don’t have that sense of belonging, it’s not home. I don’t want my kids to feel like they’re different. That sense
of connection is what Lancaster AAPI is all about.” Lancaster AAPI is civically minded and advocates for inclusivity, but the group does not conduct regular formal meetings in an office or a brick-and-mortar building. Instead, the organization hosts four seasonal potluck meals each year - “breaking rice together” - and partners with similar nonprofits to advocate for the group’s interests through a See Lancaster AAPI pg 2

Kids’ Success BY JEFF FALK
Child development and school preparation happens through touching, sparking imaginations and social interaction. At the Hands-on House, it’s not a program. It’s a mindset. Call it anything you like, but museum officials have named it Ready, Set, Success. “We’re not program-based,” said Rebecca Ackerman, executive director of Hands-on House, Children’s Museum of Lancaster. “Ready, Set, Success is an initiative. It’s an approach. It’s not a program. It’s immersive in our mission. Play is one of those things you can never get wrong. Kids can always benefit from play. It’s children playing in a museum.” In a very specific way, Ready, Set, Success is a new take on what Hands-on House, Children’s Museum of Lancaster, which is located at 721 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster, has been doing for nearly 40 years. ou can go for the exercise and physical activity. You can go for the sweet treats. You can go to support kids, families and mental health. Of course, there is also a fourth option - D. All of the above. COBYS Family Services’ Bike and Hike fundraiser is a great many things to a great many people. “Bike and Hike is really a broad event,” said Anne Stokes, who’s been COBYS Family Services director of development and communications for six years. “It’s not just one thing. There are several different ways for people to participate. However it makes sense for them. But what it’s really all about is spending time together and celebrating all the services COBYS provides.” COBYS Family Services will present the 29th edition of its annual Bike and Hike event in Lititz from noon to 3 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 7. The event will consist of a 10-mile and a 25-mile bike ride, a 3-mile walk, a 1.5-mile Tasty Tour and a festivities-concluding ice cream social - because everyone always has room for ice cream. “The best thing about the Bike and Hike is the way you get to have fun and at the same time do good things for your community,” said Stokes. “You get to come as you are. handful of events held in various locations around Lancaster County, including Manheim Township and the city of Lancaster. On Feb. 2, more than 3,000 individuals attended Lancaster AAPI’s Lunar New Year celebration at Ewell Plaza and Binns Park in the city. L ancaster A A PI als o sponsors a scholarship program as part of its youth outreach initiative. “Part of us is a social group, but we do advocate for our community,” said Lam Guo, a resident of Manheim Township. “If there’s something we want to advocate for, we show up. But we never push anything on people. Within the Asian community, there are also different people.” “It’s really a safe space,” she continued. “Our mission is to celebrate, connect, bring us together and let people know we have a voice. We want to educate people and let people know who we are. It’s fun for us to all come together. But at the end of the day, we’re a minority group.”

Through steady growth since its founding, Lancaster AAPI’s membership now numbers 300 Lancaster County residents. Many of the members are second- or third-generation citizens who live in Lancaster County communities like the city and Manheim Township. “In the Asian culture, there are a lot of traditions we value,” said Lam Guo. “We come from immigrant families. Our grandparents worked hard and tried to pave a way for us. We take part of that and try to make a way for future generations. We try to piece two worlds together. I think the biggest difference (between the two worlds) is that we don’t take a lot of things for granted. Things weren’t given to our grandparents. They came here with nothing. We recognize how hard we have to work for the things we get because we saw how hard they had to work. That’s what binds us.” I t i s e s t i m ate d t h at the Asian American and Pacific Islander population in Lancaster County currently numbers more than 14,000 residents, or about 2.6% of the locale’s total population. “On every corner and on every block and at every traffic light across Lancaster County, there is an Asianowned business,” said Lam Guo. “Some people aren’t
as open-minded because it’s unfamiliar. But the Asian American community will continue to drive commerce in the county. There have been so many other contributions made. If you never take the time to learn about it, you’ll never know what’s beautiful about it. If (people) can understand it, there will be more appreciation for it. We need to start developing appreciations for other cultures, and not just the Asian culture.” L ancaster AAPI was established in 2023. “COVID was a really tough time for a lot of Asian Americans, and (L ancaster AAPI) was a safe space to come together,” said Lam Guo. “If we’re all separated, how do people know we have a voice? It has grown so much. Every single time we get together, it feels like there’s new people. When they join Lancaster AAPI, it feels like they’re home again.” “ We are here, and we are building a community,” Lam Guo continued. “We’ve extended our arms to welcome other communities, and we hope everyone will welcome us because this is our home as well. We hope everyone will take the time to see us, hear us and value us.” For additional information, go to www.lancaster aapi.com.

Some of the children’s programs that the Hands-on House offers include Discovery to Go, Summer Camps, Sensory Friendly Sundays, TouchA -T r u c k , a n d W i n t e r Camps. T he children’s museum also provides opportunities for Scouts to earn badges and for groups to host events like birthday parties. “ T here ’s really great research that shows children who regularly attend museums score higher in third-grade achievement te s t s t h a n t h o s e w h o don’t,” said Ackerman. “Kids are given an opportunity to play, to be bored and to play with each other. Having spaces where kids can experience their fun is a big part of our work. What we see developmentally is children’s worlds get broader as they grow. As they expand to different environments, their sense of self and world expands.” Hands-on House was established in 1987 by community members with the help of the Junior League of Lancaster. “It was a community effort to build this museum for children,” said Ackerman. “It has been designed to foster the development of our younger visitors, and it’s intentional. We want to be a community hub that’s accessible for all families. We have to be intentional in car ving out time for kids to play. Part of what we’re doing is what we’ve been doing all along. What we haven’t been doing is providing the intentional access for parents.” For additional information, go to https:// handsonhouse.org.

Parents and children will be afforded opportunities to participate in the museum’s Story Stretchers interactive class on Tuesdays at 10 a.m. and 11:30 a.m., art classes on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 10:45 a.m. and 1 p.m., and STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) Explorers on Thursdays at 10 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. Ready, Set, Success will also feature guest experts each week. Additionally, participants will also be directed to the dozens of Hands-on House indoor and outdoor exhibits and stations for further exploration. Hands-on House, Children’s Museum of Lancaster is open Tuesdays through Saturdays, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sundays 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. There are entrance fees associated with admission, and memberships are available. “(Ready, Set, Success) aligns with our focus of foster ing development of young children in our community,” said Ackerman, who possesses a background as an educator and as a school administrator. “It helps young children get used to the atmosphere they’re about to go into. The goal is to help them foster curiosity and wonder. We do it with intentionality to encourage children to see new things, embrace trial and error and make adjustments. Play, in particular, is a very powerful tool that can be used to get ready for school. This is truly immersive play, and it allows kids to be actively engaged in learning.” The current plan calls for Ready, Set, Success to expand the width and depth of its experiential offerings in Januar y of 2026. “My absolute favorite t h i n g i s watc h i n g t h e adults light up when they see their children progressing,” said Ackerman. “You don’t have to police them. It starts to click for the parent and the child. When a parent can step back and witness the development progress, it’s awesome.

Executive director Jennifer West stated that Girls on the Run (GOTR) Lancaster-Lebanon is designed to help girls achieve whatever goals they set. “We like to say girls join for 100 different reasons,” she said. “Some like to get faster in a sport on their offseason. Some are new to the area, and they want to make friends. Some have friends, and they just want to have a really great time. You can be from any area and when you participate in Girls on the Run, you are going to get out of it exactly what you need.” GOTR Lancaster-Lebanon is a registered 501(c)(3) organization that serves girls in third through eighth grades in Lancaster and Lebanon counties. West said that since forming in 2009, the council has impacted nearly 24,000 girls through locally delivered GOTR, Heart & Sole, and Camp GOTR programs. Registration for the fall season will be open through Saturday, Sept. 13. Go to www.gotrlancaster.org for more details or to register.

There is a fee to participate, but GOTR has several financial assistance plans and payment options.¬†Registration includes 20 practice sessions conducted by certified and trained GOTR volunteer coaches, curriculum and lesson materials and a take-home journal with activities, an official GOTR season T-shirt and gift, and 5K registration and a medal. Each team will do a community impact project. “It’s very important to give back to the space where you live so each team picks something that they can do for the school or for the community or for emergency services,” West said. GOTR teams typically practice twice a week for 10 weeks, and the season will culminate with a celebratory 5K on Sunday, Nov. 16, at 2:30 p.m. at Millersville University’s Pucillo Field. “By participating in Girls on the Run Lancaster-Lebanon programs, girls learn to raise the bar, to use their voices for positive and effective change, to become empowered leaders over their lives, as well as in their communities, and to simply be the best version of their already extraordinary selves,” West said. Girls on the Run Lancaster-Lebanon was founded in 2009. “A friend (Carrie Johnson) and I got together, and she said, ‘This thing called Girls on the Run looks fantastic,’” said West. “’It’s an empowerment program for girls in third through eighth grades. We talk about self-esteem being the best version of yourself that you can be, standing up for yourself and others, and character development.’ At the time, we both had girls in third

and fifth grade, and it was fantastic.” The first team consisted of 25 girls in Hempfield and now GOTR teams are in every single school district in Lancaster and four of the six districts in Lebanon. “We have been growing by leaps and bounds every single year,” West said. “Lancaster and Lebanon counties have been such a welcoming community. It’s absolutely amazing to see the support from donors and sponsors but also from the families that trust us enough to allow us to spend this time with their daughters. It’s just absolutely unbelievable.” GOTR is for girls of every ability. “You don’t have to run to be in the program,” said West. “That is a common misconception because we’re called Girls on the Run, but it’s really about moving forward. We say you can hop, roll, skip, or jump your way to the finish line.” West noted that the program offers an ideal time to bond with teammates. “The girls will talk about everything from being a good friend to stopping and take a breather before you respond to texts and social media,” she said. “We talk about peer pressure and how can you be the best friend and what

qualities do you look for in a friend. It’s so much fun for the girls and it really does introduce them to a lifelong love of being physically active. When you are walking or jogging or running side by side with somebody and you’re having conversations and being silly and having a good time, you’re not thinking about whether you’re jogging or walking.” There are approximately 600 volunteer coaches a year. “ We can’t run the program without volunteers,” said West. “One of our biggest hurdles when it comes to providing the program is recruiting our volunteer coaches. It is a pretty big commitment because the season is so long. But without our volunteer coaches, we can’t support teams at different sites. We look for those individuals who want to be in that mentorship state with girls and suppor t them in terms of their growth and development.” Women, men, and high school girls can all help with the coaching. Anyone interested in volunteering can email GOTR program director Kylie Homan at kylie.homan@girlsontherun .org. “Girls on the Run has a nationally recognized training program for our coaches,” said West. We want to make sure they’re equipped with everything they need to serve the girls the best they can.” Each GOTR athlete will compete with a buddy in the season-ending 5K. The buddy must register for the race and be 16 years old or older. “The buddies are there to keep encouraging them to go at their pace,” said West. “It can be a family friend, it can be a teacher, it can be a neighbor.” GOTR is also seeking volunteers for the 5K. “We need hundreds of volunteers to be in cheer zones and people to make it fun and help keep it safe,” said West.
Since its inception, the event has raised more than $2.5 million for the organization, which provides foster, adoption and counseling services in Lancaster, York, Lebanon, Dauphin, Cumberland and Schuylkill Counties. “ T he mone y w i l l go toward our overall operating expenses,” said Stokes. “The ultimate goal is to make sure COBYS has continued resources to support our work throughout the year. Without these financial resources, the COBYS organization wouldn’t be able to provide the services it does day in and day out. Throughout the year, things pop up. When we need funds for things like fostering and counseling, the money is there.” COBYS, which operates offices at 444 Murry Hill Circle, Lancaster, and at 134 E. King St., Lancaster, was founded in 1996 and employs more than 90 staff members across all of its programs. COBYS Family Ser vices conducts or benefits from five other annual fundraisers and also receives financial support through fees for services, a variety of grants, private donations and state and county resources. “Our mission is to educate and empower children and adults to reach their full potential,” said Stokes. “We care about our clients in their times of need. We can’t always fix all the problems, but we know we can treat people with dignity, compassion and hope. There are critical needs in our community, and COBYS Family Services is an agency to meet those needs. If you value those things, we hope you’ll join us at Bike and Hike to make that care happen.” For additional information, go to www.cobys.org.

The event will begin at noon with the 25-mile bicycle ride registration and start, followed by the check-in and start of the Tasty Tour of four downtown confectionary stops - Dosie Dough, Café Arabella, CAVOLO! and Slate Café - at 1 p.m. Reg istration and the start of the 10-mile bicycle ride and the 3-mile walk will also begin at 1 p.m. Then, at 2:45 p.m. the Incredible Ice Cream Celebration will begin on the grass behind Lititz Church of the Brethren. “The Bike and Hike is a very relaxed event,” said Stokes. “The COBYS staff warmly greets you and checks you in. The Incredible Ice Cream Celebration is a time for all the participants to come together. We use that time to talk about all the great things going on at COBYS.” More than 300 individuals, family members and community members are expected to attend. “It’s really everybody, just like our community,” said Stokes of the participants. “It’s people of all ages, because that’s what it takes to support the committed human care that we provide. It’s people who have supported us for a long time. It’s some of our foster families. It’s a lot of donors and supporters. It might be people who have heard about us from a neighbor or a friend.” Organizers of the Bike and Hike fundraiser are hoping to realize $100,000 in proceeds for COBYS Family Services.

When Lighthouse Vocational Services (LVS) began in 1975, it had more founders than participants. Then called Lighthouse Rehabilitation Center, the organization was envisioned by Norman Hahn, Melvin Martin, John Sensenig, and Ben Weaver, who sought to create a place where individuals with disabilities could grow, connect, and gain a sense of accomplishment. On July 25, LVS, now located at 144 Orlan Road, New Holland, celebrated 50 years of service to its participants. The event, which was given the theme “Created to Shine,” included a number of speakers, a legacy ribbon-cutting ceremony, and tours of the facility. Liz Ackerman, executive director of the Northern Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce, served as master of ceremonies for the event. “Today marks a significant milestone not only for Lighthouse but also for the community,” said Ackerman, who noted that an organization that has done such important work and faced and overcome adversity over the years, while continuing to be guided by Christian principles, deserves to be celebrated. “As you experience what Lighthouse is for those it serves - not only the participants, but the parents, the families, and the business community - you will see that Lighthouse truly is a gem within our community,” Ackerman stated. Ackerman introduced Landis Zimmerman, president of the LVS board of directors, calling him a “true servant leader.” Zimmerman then offered the invocation, beginning by quoting Matthew 5:16. “Our theme for this is Shine … ‘Let your light so shine before men that they might see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.’” Zimmerman credited God with bringing LVS to this milestone. “(God) has provided good leadership and dedicated staff,” said Zimmerman. “Thank You for wisdom and guidance to provide individuals with places to work and play that they might be all that You want them to be.” Pennsylvania Rep. Keith
Greiner read from a citation from the Pennsylvania House of Representatives. He also noted that the work of LVS is exemplary of the many blessings of eastern Lancaster County. “This is just one of the ministries with which God has blessed this area,” he said. Greiner pointed out that the programs of LVS now have more than 100 staff members ser ving about 250 individuals, helping them to “know the fulfillment of accomplishment and prepare for lasting employment.” “These programs are designed to enhance quality of life for all,” he said. S tephen R anck , who represented congressman Lloyd Smucker at the celebration, brought a citation fo r t h e c o n g re s s i o n a l record from the U.S. House of Representatives. He noted that LVS’ attributes of “selflessness and hospitality represents what makes Pennsylvania’s 11th district so great,” and he wished LVS another 50 years of success. W hen it was time to introduce LVS executive director Gary McMullen, Ackerman described how McMullen took action to be sure the decor for the event did not break the budget. “He shared this morning that they wanted to have lots of f lowers around the stage,” stated Ackerman, who went on to explain that McMullen planted and tended to the many coleus plants that loaned their beauty to the venue. McMullen, who has helmed the ministry for about a year, gave credit to LVS staff members whom he said provide “customer care and leadership to facilitate growth to people with disabilities.” “Our team members are experts in suppor ting employ ment goals and presenting real work opportunities for our participants,” he said. In discussing the LVS mission, McMullen turned to Esther 4:14, sharing the words of Mordecai to his niece, “Who knows but you have come to this royal position for such a time as this?” he read, adding, “Esther was strategically placed to have influence on King Xerxes. She responded, and the Jewish nation was spared.” McMullen likened Esther’s

actions to the founders of LVS and the growth of the organization over the last five decades, noting that LVS participants work not only in the Orlan Road building, but also for more than 30 area nonprofits and in more than 200 businesses with which LVS collaborates. “We have much to celebrate,” he said. Lydia Messner represented the office of Pennsylvania state Sen. Scott Martin. She noted that the senator “has a heart for this community, especially those with disabilities.” She read from a citation that lauded LVS’ “strong reputation for the highest quality of service throughout its history and steady adherence to the principles of fairness, reliability, and integrity.” Marshall Miller, communications director for state Sen. James Malone, spoke as well, noting that Malone has two adult children with autism. “(Malone) knows capstone moments like this are exciting, but (also that) it takes a lot of day-in-andout care and love to give the necessary support, and he appreciates the work you
do,” stated Miller. One highlight of the celebration was when Lisa Landis, known as the host of WJTL’s “Kid’s Cookie Break” show, interviewed her nephew JJ Ator, who is an LVS par ticipant . Explaining that she and JJ speak on the phone daily, she asked Ator about his favorite things, including his favorite food, meatballs; favorite video game, Mario Kart; and what he likes about work. Attendees learned that JJ does not like fire alarms but enjoys taking the blue bus to LVS, and that he signed the weather as par t of the television production team at Conestoga Valley High School while a student there. JJ demonstrated signs for the sunny weather on the day of the event and the rain expected later in the day. He was then called upon to work with McMullen to cut the legacy ribbon while surrounded by other speakers and staff members from LVS.
