PAD Wants Only What’s Best for Dogs
Expansion Gives Heart Artists More Space to Create

espite their standing as human’s best friends, not all dogs are trainable. Through the course of its service work, Phoenix Assistance Dogs (PAD) of Central Pennsylvania encounters dogs that aren’t necessarily suitable for its specific type of training. PAD is very much in tune with the fact that ultimately what’s best for dogs is also what’s best for humans. “I would consider myself an expert on service dogs, but not on pets,” said Linzey Zoccola, the director of PAD, who founded the organization in 2009. “We work with dogs that are confident and strong. Our program helps individuals with disabilities locate and train service dogs. We guide them in the training of their service dogs.” An all-volunteer organization, PAD of Central Pennsylvania, which operates a training center in Ephrata, finds dogs, trains them or enlists the assistance of trainers to provide service dogs for people with a wide array of disabilities. But what happens when dogs don’t possess the personality for service, when they aren’t suited for that particular line of work? Would-be service dogs can become working release dogs, emotional support dogs, facility dogs or simply pets.

It is the famous Senegalese environmental policy expert Baba Dioum who is credited with saying “In the end, we will conserve only what we love, we will love only what we know and will know only what we are taught.” Those are words that the Lancaster County Conservation District (LCCD) takes to heart, words that LCCD lives by. “ We hope that a student gains confidence in talking to others about conser vation practices and what they’ve learned in the program,” said

Ever ything else is merely details. “A r t i s s u c h a b e a u t i f u l medium, and it is especially meaningful within the ID/A (Intellectual Disability/Autism) community as a way to communicate without the need for words,” said Trisha Goldsborough, Friendship Community’s marketing coordinator. “It can be incredibly challenging for a person with ID/A to express emo t ions , par t ic u l arl y for individuals who are nonverbal. Through art, you can often see a person’s true self, parts of them that do not need words to be understood. Beyond creative expression, art also helps support fine motor skills, coordination and overall movement. It can even provide a calming and grounding outlet, helping to reduce aggressive behaviors and support emotional regulation.” Recently, the Fr iendship Community’s Heart Gallery and Market increased its capabilities to serve heart artists by acquiring physical space at its downtown location at 118 N. Water St., Suite 102, Lancaster. The local nonprofit also operates a Heart Gallery and Market at 1149 E. Oregon Road, Lititz. Both locations are open to the public from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

“If somebody would like a pet, yes, dogs would make a good pet,” said Zoccola. “But service dogs are very different than pets. When their (environments) change, they can’t shut down. We only place dogs who love to work. I’m very quick to release a service dog as a pet if it’s not working out as a working dog.” Dogs are introduced into PAD’s 24-month training program as pups. About half of those that enter exit as service dogs. At any one time, there are between 12 and 25 dogs involved in PAD’s training program. “The volunteer gets the option to adopt the dog if it doesn’t work out, unless there’s a safety concern,” said Zoccola. “Some dogs might not be good with children. (Volunteers) would get the first chance at adoption. If they don’t want it, we would put it up for adoption. Occasionally, (the dog) could find another job. They could be a facility

But people love to adopt dogs with service backgrounds.” For its training programs, PAD primarily works with golden retrievers, labradors and poodles, or some combination of those three breeds. But there are other breeds that can be trained to be service dogs. “We’ve had all sorts of dogs be successful; it all depends on the dogs,” said Zoccola. “We’re very small. We take our time. We want to help people who don’t fit into molds. When we started, we were training one dog at a time. It was really incredible to make relationships with our partners. We don’t use a kennel. We work with owners and trainers.” Service dogs had a profound effect on Zoccola’s earlier life, and those experiences provided the inspiration for establishing Phoenix Assistance Dogs of Central Pennsylvania. “I’ve been heavily involved in the industry for 26 years,” said Zoccola, a resident of Lititz. “I received my first service dog at 16, and it changed my life. Since PAD was founded, we’ve placed over 200 service dogs across the country. Most are owner-trained and some are program-trained.” For additional information, go to https://padcentral.shop.

Wednesdays through Fridays and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays. “Artists are able to create and grow their skills in the Heart studios and then sell their work at the Heart Gallery and Market,” said Goldsborough. “The gallery component features artwork created exclusively by Heart artists in the program. Every art purchase directly supports the artists, as they receive a commission form each sale of their work. The market side features goods from small businesses across the nation, including spices, sauce, skincare products, dog treats and chocolates. Each of these products support businesses that are empowering individuals with ID/A, whether through providing employment opportunities or through entrepreneurs who are business owners themselves.” The newly expanded downtown Heart Gallery and Market allows more space for more artists to create, to showcase their work, to elevate talent and to host more community events. It’s also enabled the organization to introduce products from entrepreneurs across the country. In addition, the Friendship Community has expanded its online retail space at www.friendship art.net. “Our goal is also to create a space where people of all abilities feel welcomed and safe,” said Goldsborough. “During events at the Heart Gallery and Market, we often see individuals with ID/A simply being themselves, surrounded by community and joy. I often see family members become emotional as they watch their loved ones thrive in an environment where they are
fully accepted and celebrated as themselves. Safe, inclusive spaces like this are still too rare, and providing that sense of belonging for people in the Lancaster and Lebanon communities will always be the heart of our mission.” Currently, the Friendship Community has more than 60 individuals over the age of 18 with intellectual disabilities or autism involved with its Heart Artists programs. “The people who make up Friendship Community are just that; they are people,” said Goldsborough. “Friendship Community is full of talented creatives, entrepreneurs and workers with a wide range of abilities and personalities.” Formed from a lone faith-based residential home in Lititz, Friendship Community has been serving adults with disabilities since 1972. Currently, the nonprofit offers services like 23 residential homes for two to four individuals, homebased support, day programs and worship services. “People with intellectual disabilities are often underestimated, and simply browsing the artwork on our site helps challenge those stereotypes in a meaningful way,” said Goldsborough. “My hope is that people leave feeling inspired by what we do at Friendship Community and feel encouraged to support a mission rooted in inclusion and empowerment. Sallie Gregory, who’s been LCCD’s education and operations coordinator for 25 years. “The program often gives students new directions as they consider their paths forward from high school graduation. It’s our hope that an ethic of conservation sticks with them in any direction and that they take one action step, even if that’s as simple as a shorter shower to conserve water, or as involved as studying forest management to create habitat through plantings and controlled burns.” Headquartered inside the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster, LCCD conducts an annual Youth Conservation School. Over the last 47 summers, LCCD’s Youth Conservation School has gotten kids outside, taught them about the importance of the environment and introduced basic conservation skills. “The program shares the definition of conservation as the wise use of natural resources to prevent waste and damage, to maintain the supply we need to survive and that of future generations,” said Gregory. “If we become careless, the future of our needs is uncertain. When we work together and see the value in caring about the amount we use, we are stewards for the future.” Nearly 20 students between the ages of 14 and 16 from school districts across Lancaster County attended the six-day, overnight Youth Conservation School in July. The youths, who were required to leave their cell phones at home, engaged in more than 18 fun, educational activities, like fishing, critical thinking, canoeing, firearm safety, data gathering and analysis, and forestry and land use. The Youth Conservation School was instructed by employees of LCCD and officials of partnering

The Youth Conservation School, which included field trips, was conducted at Northern Lancaster County Game and Fish Protective Association, 180 Forest Road, Denver. “The program is held in a camplike setting with a schoollike atmosphere,” said Gregory, a resident of Lititz. “The overnight field school includes large canvas tents with cots, with classes starting just after breakfast each morning. Lessons go into the evening with lights out at 10 p.m. The schedule is full with instruction, opportunities to see conservation careers in action and many chances to try hands-on learning.” During the half-century since it was founded, the Youth Conservation School has positively influenced the young lives of hundreds of Lancaster County teenagers. “Each year, a new class of students meets each other on the first day, sometimes with jitters and anxieties about trying something new,” said Gregory. “By the last day, new friendships and the routine of a schedule have formed a cohesive group ready to take what they’ve learned and share with others. This one class then becomes the megaphone to help others understand why conservation is something we all need to consider on a daily basis, to maintain the natural resources we use every day to survive.” LCCD, which was founded in 1950, employs 38 workers. LCCD’s work is broken down into five departments - data and analysis, erosion and sedimentation, agriculture, watershed, and education/operations.
