Addiction is not funny. But comedy and fundraising go hand in hand like The Potter’s House and recovery. “I love to laugh,” said Lanny Millette, who’s been the director of donor relations for The Potter’s House for six years. “Comedy can definitely be therapeutic if it is clean and wholesome. Laughter is a gift from God and, as you may

have heard, the best medicine.” A faith-based, addiction recovery mission, The Potter’s House - which operates a total of seven facilities, including ones in Leola and Brownstown - will host a “Comedy Night Friendraiser” as its next fundraiser and community outreach event. A mixture of humor and reality, the Comedy Night Friendraiser will be conducted from 6:30 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 22, at Shady Maple

Denver Will Graciously Host Wreaths Across America BY JEFF FALK

To teach is to respect. To learn is to honor. To understand is to appreciate. When the Wreaths Across America (WAA) Mobile Education Exhibit rolls to a stop, meaningful education comes about. Along with Linda Gerhart, Sandy Flory is WAA’s co-location coordinator for Fairview Cemetery and Fairview Cemetery annex. “I want people to learn that we have to honor and remember these guys, while they’re still here and after they pass,” said Flory. “They have sacrificed time away from their families. It provides a unique opportunity to come together and share stories of those who sacrificed. It teaches people the true costs of freedom.” WAA’s Mobile Education Exhibit is coming to Denver - to Weaver’s Market, 2610 N. Reading Road, to be precise. The exhibit will make an appearance from noon to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 25, and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 26. The event is free to attend, and everyone is not only invited to attend, but also encouraged to do so. “We try to educate citizens in our area about our veterans and give Vietnam veterans the welcome home they deserve,” said Flory. “We know Vietnam veterans did not get the welcome home they should have. We are hoping we get a lot of veterans and a lot of people at the event.” The exhibit’s physical presence takes its shape from a handicappedaccessible 18-wheel tractor trailer, equipped with a ramp and a lift. Placing people ahead of money is the model upon which Life Changes Realty Group’s business is based. “We’re really community focused,” said Jonathan Cross, a Manheim Township resident who’s been employed by Life Changes Realty Group for two years. “It’s why I’m part of this group. It’s the reason I probably won’t sell houses for anybody else. Money comes and goes, and I’ve only got so much time in this life. The question is, ‘What am I doing with my time?’” L i fe C h a n g e s R e a l t y Group employs 22 realtors and expediates the sales of properties across Lancaster C o u n t y. A d o p t i n g t h e company’s pay-it-forward program is one of the stipulations for employment. W hen a Life Changes Realty Group realtor assists with the sale of a property, he or she is compelled to donate 10% of their commission to the nonprofit of their client’s choice. The charities must have local impact and not be associated with political campaigns or politics. “ We’re not a national brand; we’re based in Lancaster County,” said Cross. “We don’t accept just anybody. The pay-it-forward program is mandator y

when we come on board. Everybody told me how much money I was going to make in real estate. But Brittany (Garner, owner) told me about how much money I was going to give away. We all do it together. It’s important to all of us. “I’ve got bills too,” added Cross. “I’m not a flashy person. I’m not necessarily doing this to make big bucks. At the end of the day, it’s really satisfying giving someone keys to their first house. I help people get into their homes, and that’s very satisfying.” From 1 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 13, at Penn Medicine Park , 650 N. Prince St., Lancaster, Life Changes Realty Group will host a celebratory community outreach/fundraising event called Million Reasons Festival. The fair will recognize the $1 million that Life Changes Realty Group has donated to charities impacting Lancaster County. T he free event will include food trucks, an artisans’ market, a cornhole tournament, other games, a dunk tank, face painting and bounce houses, and the kids’ area at Penn Medicine Park will be open for play. “Buying a house is the biggest financial decision that most people make,” said Cross. “When I meet people and give them my

spiel, I talk about the payit- for ward program. It demonstrates the service over the sale. As a sales tactic, it works out great. Clients will say, ‘Oh, I really like that.’” Through the pay-it-forward program, it’s taken Life Changes Realty Group 13 years to reach the $1 million donation milestone. Cross’ contribution to that sum is more than $4,000 of take-home pay. “It’s incredible how we’ve been able to do it, especially as piecemeal,” said Cross. “There’s a snowball effect with that. It just adds up in pieces. It’s like drips in a bucket, and now the bucket is overflowing.” At the request of their clients, Life Changes Realty Group has donated funds to more than 70 causes and nonprofits, including SWAN 4 Kids, animal shelters, St. John Neumann Catholic Church’s Off the Streets program, Gamers Outreach, the Alzheimer’s Association, Building Bridges Foundation, North Star Initiative, Lancaster Conservancy, Power Packs Pro ject and education foundations. “It spans the gamut,” said Cross. “There are so many great causes that I can’t name all the ones we give to, and I hadn’t heard of

The Potter’s House also conducts a spring banquet fundraiser at Shady Maple and a pork roast in the early part of the summer. “ We a re p r i m a r i l y funded by committed donors,” said Millette. “ We are committed to acce pt ing anyone w ho desires our help, regardless of their ability to pay. Most do not contribute anything until they start work ing in the four th month. Even then the fees are kept quite reasonable to allow them to pay outstanding fees and begin to accumulate a nest egg so they can eventually move out on their own. We do not receive any government funding.” T h e Po t t e r ’s H o u s e emerged from the vision of Lloyd and Elaine

It tr uly is a sight to behold. “It’s going to be moving for some of the people, just because of the veterans on hand,” said Flory, a re s i d e n t o f D e nv e r. “I think it’s going to be informational for some people. “The Mobile Education Exhibit travels all over the place,” Flory continued. “I requested it come to our area. We had to have a place that could accommodate the tractor trailer, accommodate the traffic and a site that had both bathrooms and a place to eat.” This month will mark the first time that WAA’s exhibit has made a stop in Denver. Weaver’s Market is one of just 18 stops that the Mobile Education Exhibit will make during its two-

Kathy Heil thoroughly enjoys gardening; she likes spending time alone with her perennials that thrive in the garden outside of her home. But Heil also enjoys sharing her gardening passion with others. A resident of Manheim Tow nship, He il is the president of the Women’s Garden Club of Lancaster County. “It’s therapy and enjoyment,” said Heil. “I enjoy seeing if the birds come, and the insects and all the natural habitat. We also have a patio in the backyard, and we enjoy sharing our meals outside. We also have a water feature to go with the garden.” There’s something calming and medicinal associated with humans physically connecting with an Earth that sustains them. Gardening also has a way of triggering our nurturing mechanisms. “I just like getting my hands in the dirt,” said Heil. “I’ve pretty much always been a gardener. I come from a farming family. I’ve always had an inclination to do some gardening.” Many of the same feelings Heil has about gardening she shares with the other 50 dues-paying members of the garden club. That bond possesses the power to

Headquar tered in Maine, Wreaths Across America is a national nonprofit that seeks to honor the service of veterans by laying wreaths on veterans’ final resting places around the holidays - this year on Saturday, Dec. 19. For the last four years, vo l u n te e r s f ro m t h e Denver area extension of WAA have placed 470 wreaths on veterans ’ graves in three local cemeteries. The Cocalico region of WAA raises money to purchase the wreaths through a series of annual fundraising events. “ We j u s t w a n t t o spread the word so we can remember and honor our veterans,” said Flor y. “ We have an increasing number o f p e o ple com i n g to our events. inspire strong friendships and uplifting camaraderie. “They’re women from all kinds of backgrounds,” said Heil. “That’s what makes it very interesting. You learn about all these pursuits people have. “We share our pursuit of gardening interests,” she added. “We have a lot of fun; we like to learn and share good times. The purpose of the club is to foster interests that are all about gardening.” The club periodically hosts open houses and embarks on regular field trips. Its meetings feature presentations from gardening experts and an Americanized informal tea that includes coffee and appetizers in addition to tea. Nine s ubcommi tte es support the structure and work of the club. “Being we meet once a month, it’s always great to get together,” said Heil. “We try to get everyone involved. It’s not just an observation program. “Our club is open,” Heil continued. “We just have a joy, and we want to share that. We’d like to get other people interested.” The club meets monthly at 1 p.m. on the fourth Thursday at St. Thomas Episcopal C hurch, 301 Saint Thomas Road, Lancaster. The meetings are open to the public. “When I became a retiree, I was able to spend more time gardening and developing more perennials,” said Heil. “As we get older, we have to evaluate what we can do and we can’t do.” T he garden club was established in 1947. Taylor Newswanger, VisionCorps’ low vision occupational therapist and manager of therapy services, will present “Exploring Meta Glasses: More Than Meets the Eye.” Newswanger will share how Meta’s smart glasses, which use artificial intelligence, can help people who are blind or have low vision. The glasses may provide more independence for these people, especially in environments that are not readily accessible, such as at restaurants and with printed materials. News-

I think the audience can connect with the characters.” Nearly 150 individuals are involved with Servant Stage’s production of “Anne of Green Gables,” a roster that includes performers, musicians, set builders, production team members, ushers and concession stand workers. A total of 70 professional and amateur actors and actresses, between the ages of 5 and 70, make up the double-role cast. “We’re trying to portray a town,” said Bauer, a resident of Strasburg. “Our cast is more than a typical theater show. We’ve got retirees, workers from different occupations, and half of the cast are students. It helps to create this feeling of a town.” Since its founding in 2015, Servant Stage has generated more than 100 productions and staged more than 1,500 performances. Currently, Servant Stage, which is headquartered at 1842 William Penn Way, Lancaster, is producing more than 200 performances each year. “I think we’re really unique in walking the line between community theater and professional theater,” said Bauer. “We want to be accessible and have educational opportunities. At this point, I think Servant Stage is the largest pay-as-youwill theater troupe in the country. That makes us very unique. “The beauty of theater is just the way it brings communities together and people together,” Bauer continued. “That’s the why of why we do theater. Both within the cast and in the audience, there are these shared experiences.” Servant Stage will also stage Lion King Kids at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 14, at Calvary Baptist Church, 530 Milton Road, Lancaster, as well as 27 performances of Joy to the World from Friday, Nov. 6, to Sunday, Dec. 20, at various locations across Lancaster County. Program to Explore Flax Processing Lancaster Area Sewing Network (L A SN) will present “Processing Flax” on Monday, Aug. 24, at 7 p.m. at Lancaster Friends Quaker Meeting , 110 Tulane Terrace, Lancaster. Cloth, and the thread with which to sew it, all begin as fiber. Today ’s fabrics come from a wealth of fibers, many of which are synthetic, but before the 20th century, sewing thread and fabric were made of natural fibers and could even be homemade. Flax was the typical fiber Lancaster County families used to make their own sewing thread and cloth. Flax comes from a plant that was once a commonly grown crop in Pennsylvania. During the upcoming presentation, Tina Mickley will discuss flax culture and retting and will demonstrate the processes of breaking, scutching and hackling flax fiber, along with how that fiber becomes linen thread and, finally, linen cloth and sewing thread. Mickley, a spinner and weaver with a fine arts degree in painting, became interested in historic textiles and their production more than 45 years ago while working as a costumed interpreter at a national historic site. Since 2018 she has grown and processed her own flax, along with volunteering at area historic sites demonstrating spinning, weaving, and flax dressing. She is an independent contractor at the Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum, where she regularly interprets 18th-

and 19th-century textile production. Mickley helped to develop and teaches the museum’s Sheep to Fabric and Field to Fabric classes. She also collects antique spinning wheels and helped plan two Antique Spinning W heel Symposiums in Pennsylvania. Guests may register for the program on arrival. There is a fee for nonmembers, payable by cash or check only. L A S N ’s 2 0 2 6 t h e m e is “Sewing Revolution,” with all monthly meetings touching on an aspect of the topic. L A SN is a group for people who love to sew. Its members range from beginners to intermediate hobbyists to professional dressmakers. The group’s main focus is fitting and construction skills related primarily to garment sewing. It meets at 7 p.m. on the fourth Monday of most months, with Zoom meetings held during the winter. PHEAA Announces Increased PA State Grant Award The Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency (PHEAA) has announced that as a result of the recently passed state budget, the maximum award through the PA State Grant Program has increased to $6,000, the highest award in program history. For fiscal year 2026-27, the PA State Grant Program received a more than $5.9 million increase, bringing

total available funding to more than $419 million. This supports PHEAA’s approved awarding formula that increases the maximum award to $6,000, up from the $5,750 maximum award that has held steady for the past four years and was previously the highest award in the history of the PA State Grant Program. Local student-athlete Anthony “Ant” Rodriguez recently brought together young athletes and members of the Conesto ga Valley football team for an Overcomer Performance Community Football Camp. The program, held July 22 at East Lampeter Township Community Park , welcomed children ages 8 to 12 and was completely free of charge. Rodriguez, a rising senior and football player at Conestoga Valley High School, organized the camp to give younger athletes in the community an opportunity to learn the game in a positive and encouraging environment. Several of his Conestoga Valley football teammates volunteered alongside him, helping lead campers through drills and activities. Overcomer Performance was created around the idea of pushing through challenges, working hard, and using one’s experiences to become stronger. The camp was one way Rodriguez brought that mindset into his community, creating an opportunity for younger athletes to learn, have fun, and be encouraged by players

Senior Expo Slated

More than 50 exhibitors will be available to offer information on programs and ser vices for older community residents at Sen. Scott Martin’s Senior Expo on Thursday, Aug. 27. The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Farm and Home C e n t e r, 1 3 8 3 A r c a d i a Road, Lancaster. It is free of charge. Representatives of state, county, and local agencies will be on hand to provide information on benefits for older Pennsylvanians, including health and wellness, assistive technologies, consumer protection, income tax assistance, veterans’ benefits, traffic safety, and utility assistance. Free health screenings, do or pr iz es , and lig ht refreshments will also be available. The theme of this year’s Senior Expo is “America the Beautiful” in recognition of the nation’s 250th a n n i v e r s a r y. We a t h e r permitting, a flag-raising ceremony will kick off the expo, and America250PA will be available to hand out free merchandise at the event. The Lancaster District Attorney’s Office will be on-site to help citizens properly dispose of unused prescription medications. People may br ing old, unused, or unneeded medications to the event and place them in the secure box at the Lancaster County Drug Task Force table staffed by a Lancaster County detective. The initiative is being offered to slow the abuse of prescription medications. As a new feature at this year’s expo, Tech Buddies - a nonprofit organization that encourages teenage volunteers to help older Pennsylvanians with cellphones and other devices - will be available to provide technology tutoring to seniors.
