local pillar, the Akron Volunteer Fire Company serves the community in a variety of ways, not the least of which is responding to emergencies. The local community appreciates everything that the fire company does. “We have a strong backing in the community,” said Aaron Murray, vice president of the Akron Volunteer Fire Company. “We attend a lot of local events. If people reach out about an event, we make it a point to be there.” Recently, the local community showed its appreciation for the Akron Volunteer Fire Company Station 12 through some thoughtful actions. During a time of need, the community stepped up for the fire company in a big way. A minor oversight had left the fire company’s supply of bottled drinking water precariously low. There’s a great new nonprofit in Lancaster County that’s been founded by Neffsville resident Greta Myers. It’s called “Neuro Neighborhood.” “ We used ‘neighborhood ’ to give people a welcoming invitation to something bigger than themselves,” said Myers, who also serves as executive director of the organization. “Neighborhoods contain people who come together to support one another. We all know how important it is to have a support system, and we felt that use of the title ‘neighborhood’ would exemplify our support. “Our goal is to continue to get the word out so we can reach as many people as possible,” continued Myers. “The more people who know about the Neuro Neighborhood, the more people we can support.” Founded in March of 2025, Neuro Neighborhood is an al l - vol u nte er or ganiz at ion designed to help people dealing with neurological conditions like Parkinson’s disease and multiple sclerosis. Those neurological conditions can occur through injury or a deterioration of the central nervous system, which includes our brains and spinal cords. For now, Myers is operating Neuro Neighborhood out of her residence. “Spinal cord injuries or brain injuries can be caused by traumatic events to either area of our central nervous system, or lack of blood flow to that area,” said Myers. “Symptoms widely vary between neurological conditions including movement, See Neuro pg 3

For one day, Columbia’s Janson Field will transform into a living museum, bringing the sights, sounds and r ules of baseball’s earliest days back to life. On Saturday, Aug. 15, two vintage clubs will compete in a free doubleheader of 1864-style “base ball” (the original two-word spelling), a version of the game played by more than 400 teams across the country. The games will begin at 11 a.m. at the park, 650 Cherry St. The event is possible thanks to the support of the Columbia Lions Club as part of the borough’s yearlong tricentennial celebration, and admission is free. The matchup will pit the Keystone Club of Harrisburg against the Mechanicsburg Zouaves. B oth teams recently competed with a total of 26 clubs in the Gettysburg National 19th Century Base Ball Festival, held July 18 and 19. Even the names of the teams are based in history, said Rich Heinick, who was a founding member of the Keystones when the team formed more than a decade ago. “Both clubs have borrowed their names from actual teams that played in those towns during the 1860s and 1870s,” he explained. “The Zouaves were re-formed recently, and this will be their inaugural game. There will be extra uniforms available if anyone would like to try their hand at 1864 base ball.” More than one sports historian has described this vintage sport as “a Civil War re-enactment with real bullets.” The game will look familiar to today’s fans, except for two notable differences: Players compete without

gloves, since they were not widely used until the early 1880s, and a ball caught after one hop - known as “on the bound” - counts as an out. “The bound rule changes the way everyone hits, runs and positions themselves on defense,” Heinick said. “It seems a little strange at first, but you can see how this made sense in the early days of the sport. After several years of debate, the rule was amended in 1865 to make the game more challenging. Even so, our players try to catch what they can on a f ly, because we often play in open fields, and you never know which way a bounce will go.” The ball closely resembles today ’s baseball in size, weight and firmness, meaning players must rely on technique, and sometimes tolerate some pain, to field it bare-handed. Pitchers throw underhand, batters overrun first base at their own risk, and any ball that first lands inside the first- and third-base lines is fair, even if it later rolls into foul territory. That rule keeps the corner infielders on their toes. The games are fiercely competitive while maintaining a strong tradition of good sportsmanship. Janson Field, a traditional baseball diamond

built atop the borough’s former reser voir more than a century ago, has a rich baseball history. It once served as the home field for several Columbia semipro teams, including clubs led by player-manager Jimmy Sheckard, who grew up nearby and, at various points during his major league career, led the league in home runs, stolen bases, walks and slugging percentage. The field also welcomed Black barnstorming teams throu g hout the 1920s and 1930s. T he Aug. 15 doubleheader marks the fourth straight year the Keystones have included Columbia on their schedule, and once again several borough residents will take the field. Spectators are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and a picnic lunch, and children will be invited onto the field to play between games. Portable restrooms will be available. People who arrive early are invited to join the players for their annual walk across Cherry Street to Mount Bethel Cemetery to pay tribute to Samuel Young, the Columbia community leader credited with bringing organized base ball to the Susquehanna Valley in the early 1860s. We encourage you to reach out to our specialized suppor t, because, with (the) right support, you can thrive. In some of our most challenging times in life, we all need a neighborhood to count on.” Overseen by a five-person board of directors, Neuro Neighborhood serves about 200 individuals, mainly adults from L ancaster Count y and surrounding areas. Currently situated in the initial phase of its planned growth process, Neuro Neighborhood’s future goals include adding physical therapy services, incorporating a multidisciplinar y team, locating a physical office space, adding wellness programming and partnering with similar organizations in the community. “As I continued to study

to become a board-certified Neurological Clinical Specialist, I also began searching for more community resources for my patients,” said Myers. “Unfortunately, I had trouble finding the types of resources and support that my patients were looking for, so I started writing those ideas down as a list. Then I did research

and connected with other organizations around the country that were trying to incorporate a better continuum of care and support for adults with neurological conditions. My list continued to grow, and I found others who wanted to help me make that list a reality. Thus, we created Neuro Neighborhood.”

Some movement symptoms can include increased tone and reflexes in muscles, difficulty initiating movement and weakness affecting many muscle groups. “Speech and breathing can be impacted as well, because both of these actions are controlled by our muscles,” she added. “Keep in mind that these symptoms are based in neurolog y; it is not as simple as going to the gym to get stronger. Recovery from these types of muscle changes must include what we call neuroplasticity to help improve these symptoms or be creative to find compensatory strategies to allow full participation in life.” One of Neuro Neighborhood’s most effective weapons in the fight against neurological disorders is activity or group activities. When you start a nonprofit, you’re focused on the work and not necessarily thinking in terms of future mergers. The founders of Hope Inspire Love kept their noses to the grindstone, and natural evolution produced organic growth. “My heart was always collaboration and participation,” said Amy Thurston, who, along with her husband, Steve, founded Hope Inspire Love nine years ago. “Did I think about a merger? No. We weren’t coming here to reinvent what someone else was doing. She’s Somebody’s Daughter was doing things other people weren’t doing. You’re taking the strengths of both organizations and putting them together.” Mo re t h a n s i m p l y a merger, Hope Inspire Love and S he ’s S omeb o dy ’s Daughter recently joined forces, pooled resources and intertwined missions all in the name of fighting human trafficking and sexual exploitation. The names have remained the same under the umbrella of a single nonprofit. Hope Inspire Love will serve as the lead organization, and the Lemoyne-based She’s Somebody’s Daughter will perform outreach services. “This was just a beautiful next step,” said Amy. “This allows us to better impact and really help survivors in our region. It’s a natural alignment in the right direction. It’s not a mission drift; it’s a mission

realignment. We don’t ever want there to be barriers for Hope Inspire Love. This was an easy ‘yes.’ There was no pause or reservations.” The consolidation allows the two nonprofits to work as one and to provide better services and reach more victims and potential victims of human trafficking in Lancaster, Dauphin, Franklin, Lebanon, York, Berks, Cumberland, Adams, Perry, Montgomery and Lehigh counties. Operating under the tagline “Better Together, Stronger Together,” Hope Inspire Love, which is headquartered at 1380 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster, now also operates offices in Lemoyne and Chambersburg. Under details of the m e r g e r, e v e r y fo r m e r staff member of S he ’s S o m e b o d y ’s D a u g h t e r was retained by the new organization. “This partnership is a bold investment in the future of survivors and our community,” said Rosemarie Davis, executive director of She’s Somebody’s Daughter. “The exponential power of partnership with Hope Inspire Love

enables us to support and expand our mission to women exploited in the commercial sex industry.” “ S h e ’s S o m e b o d y ’s Daughter’s mission is going out and meeting individuals in dark places and meeting the needs, instead of waiting for people to be referred to them,” said Amy, who will remain in her role as CEO of Hope Inspire Love. “They’re going into that moment and into vulnerable situations like massage businesses, strip clubs, motels and prisons. We’re there for long-term support. “ We’ve been working together for years,” added Amy. “(She’s Somebody’s Daughter was) looking at where they were going in the future. We were working with them like, ‘What do you need?’” Ultimately, it was a conversation at a conference between T hurston and She’s Somebody’s Daughter officials that got the ball rolling toward a merger. Thurston took the idea to Hope Inspire Love’s board of directors in January of 2025, and by the fall of that year, the proper documen-

tation was submitted to the Pennsylvania Attorney General’s office. “We made sure this was truly a great fit,” said Amy. “It’s not just two organizations joining names. It’s a collective force for good in our community. We have to be willing to consider what’s best for the people we serve. Neither organization was looking for this, but this came about. We didn’t force it. It was meant to be.” Amy and Steve Thurston founded Hope Inspire Love in the basement of their home in 2017. The organization has performed a wealth of good in those short years since. “It started as a dream of something we had to do,” said Amy. “It started with awareness and education. We have expanded our services, and now we have over 100 volunteers giving back. Schulz Named to Fulton Board Fulton Financial Corporation has announced the appointment of David S. Schulz as a member of its board of directors for a term commencing Sept. 14 and expiring at Fulton’s 2027 annual meeting of shareholders. Obviously, preventing a heart attack is better than treating one.” The Gene Health Project is an immense undertaking that involves multiple health care systems from all over the nation. The study collects samples of individuals’ genetics, stores the data and examines it. From those examinations, the study can predict an individual’s likelihood for certain illnesses and diseases. In six to eight weeks, participants are notified of the results of their studied samples. But the project needs samples to study. Interested individuals over the age of 18 can request

blood draws or saliva kits through their Wellspan Health internet portals or by visiting the health care system’s website at www.wellspan.org. There are no costs involved with participating. WellSpan Health operates 12 hospitals and more than 250 patient care facilities in central Pennsylvania and northern Maryland, including locations in Ephrata, Lebanon, Mount Gretna and York. “It’s a very large research project, and we will be collecting an enormous amount of data,” said Dr. Kann. “We’re also working with 15 to 20 hospital systems across the country. Soon we will have the largest data bank in the world. People who participate can learn some of the characteristics about themselves. The benefit to volunteers is that they learn about these problems and then they’re in position to prevent seri-

ous problems. “If volunteers have a family history of any problems, we can tell them their risks for those problems,” added Dr. Kann. “We store all of this data digitally. If a question ever comes up in the future, we just have to ask the computer for the details.” The Gene Health Project was initiated three years ago, and to this point the study has collected more than 6,000 genetic samples from volunteers. The goal for the project is to collect another 4,000 samples, but the research won’t stop there. “After that, the hope is to continue the project,” said Dr. Kann. “We’ve already probably saved 1,000 lives and made 1,000 diagnoses. It’s the most remarkable way to do precision medicine. “Each of us has 23,000 genes,” continued Dr. Kann. “These genes are respon-

sible for making proteins, and these proteins make us who we are. They determine things like the color of our eyes or the color of our hair. Basically, they make us who we are and allow us to be able to survive in most environments.” Spreading the word is one of the biggest challenges currently being faced by the Gene Health Project. Like any research, the bigger the sample size, the more accurate the findings. “The more you spread it, the more you’re able to help people,” said Dr. Kann. “I would encourage people to sign up for the Gene Health Project and see what you can learn about yourself. It’s just a win, win, win. “Up until now, health care systems have been mostly reactive,” concluded Dr. K ann. “Now we ’re putting a lot of effort into who’s going to get sick and how they’re going to get sick.”

A g roup of students from Twin Valley, Pequea Valley, Ephrata, and Cocalico traveled to Costa Rica from June 22 to July 1. The group traveled with WorldStrides and was accompanied by Costa Rican guide Gustavo Solís, who has led the group for the past three trips. Students benefited from his deep knowledge of Costa Rica’s history, wildlife, culture, and people. At the beginning of their adventure, the students had the opportunity to stand on the rim of the Irazú Volcano, one of the country’s active volcanoes. In addition, they embraced Costa Rican culture by learning traditional dances, preparing authentic local dishes, and experiencing how food brings communities together. Science and nature came alive when students visited CATIE, the Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Center, w he re lo c a l s c ie nt i s t s introduced them to tropical agriculture and sustainable farming practices. They also spent time with members of the Kekoldi and Bribri Indigenous communities, learning about centuries-old traditions and medicinal plants, and even

Students also challenged themselves by ziplining high above the rain forest canopy at Go Adventure Park and conquered the 500-step hike to the La Fortuna Waterfall. They relaxed in Costa Rica’s natural hot springs after days filled with exploration.

The response was immediate and decisive. “When I went into the closet at the fire hall, I realized we only had 10 cases of water left,” said Murray. “I thought to myself, ‘This isn’t good.’ I decided to make a post on Facebook and see what would happen. The next day, my phone was ringing, I was getting texts and I was getting messages on Facebook. “There was no one at the fire company really assigned to the bottled water,” added Murray. “It’s kind of like, ‘If you make a mess, clean it up.’ We had had a couple of heat waves and the Fourth of July holiday.” Dozens of donations of water poured in, from residents, civically minded individuals, concerned businesses and local Scouting America troops. In 14 hours, the Akron Volunteer Fire Company received more than 3,000 bottles of drinking water. It nearly got to the point where the fire company didn’t know where to go with all the water. “It was overwhelming in a good way,” said Murray. “It was impressive. It was a grateful feeling due to an outpouring of support. Nothing like this ever really happened before, not in regards to hydration materials. Never to the extent of asking the public, like, ‘Hey, we need your help.’ Now our closet is full.” The active Akron Volunteer Fire Company

The trip also included a visit to a local school. Students connected with peers through conversation, games, and sports; practiced their Spanish; and gained insight into another country’s educational system and daily life. The trip helped students to develop confidence and broaden their perspectives, and they returned home with special memories and a deeper appreciation for the global community.

The fire company responds to about 120 calls each year, for fires, vehicle accidents, medical emergencies and public assistance. “Our firefighters are dedicated individuals who want a way to give back,” said Murray. “They have decided that they want to give back in a way that helps the community and serves other people. We provide public safety and the preservation of life and property. We also want to be a presence in the community. We don’t want to be strangers. “ We are a community-based, volunteer organization, and we are here for the people,” concluded Murray. “When the fire siren goes off, we’re not showing up because we’re getting paid.
