It is situated on land owned by the borough of Ephrata. It is maintained and operated by the Susquehanna Area Mountain Bike Association (SAMBA). It is overseen and promoted by local business advocate Mainspring of Ephrata.
The Ephrata Bike Park at Heatherwood truly is a community gem.
“It’s a recreational asset,” said Joy Ashley, who’s been the executive director of Mainspring of Ephrata for five years. “Many people had a piece of building this project. We needed the borough’s blessing, and Wellspan Health was a major sponsor. Many hands were needed to make it happen.”
The Ephrata Bike Park at Heatherwood is a space where fun is more intentional than physical activity.
In New Holland, Water Makes Kids Grow

Dolphins swim fast. They’re smart, they like to have fun and they swim together in pods. Dolphins are the perfect mascot for the New Holland community summer swim program.
“In the summertime, there’s a lot of down time for the kids,” said Tamara Wanner, who’s been the vice president of the New Holland summer swim program for four years. “It encourages kids to get up in the morning and keep schedules. It gives kids something to do. It keeps them active, and it allows them to relax. It helps them to learn to be active going forward.”
Located at the end of Lehman Street near 700 Pointview Ave. and adjacent to the Warwick to Ephrata Rail Trail, the Ephrata Bike Park is open from dawn to dusk, yearround, weather permitting.
“Physical activity is related to a healthy lifestyle,” said Ashley. “It’s a stress reliever. I think people enjoy the bike park because it’s a way to
exercise and enjoy the environment. Originally, it was a nature area that was underutilized; it was ideal for a park of this nature. You can enjoy nature at a challenging pace.”

Ryan Forbes is living, breathing proof that all things are absolutely possible through God. Ryan Forbes Ministries is a testimonial that God works in mysterious ways.
“I was in the top bunk of my prison cell,” said Ryan, who along with his wife, Caitlyn, founded Ryan Forbes Ministries. “I had a dream of me driving a car in a high-speed chase, and I saw a large hand coming over the car, and that was it. I had an experience with God.
The Dolphins practice and host home swim meets at the New Holland Community Pool, which is located at 400 E. Jackson St., New Holland, and owned and operated by the borough. A member of the Lancaster Summer Swim League, the Dolphins compete in about seven meets a year during a summer season that begins in the middle of May and concludes at the end of July.
On Friday, July 24, and Saturday, July 25, the Dolphins will host the annual Lancaster Summer Swim League championships at New Holland Community Pool.
“These swimmers are learning perseverance,” said Wanner. “You don’t just jump in and get a top time. It takes hard work. We encourage them. It teaches the kids not to give up and to keep going. We also emphasize getting along as a team. We’re all working on our own times, and we’re all on the same team.
“We’re teaching personal goals, and it’s hard to attain these goals,” added Wanner. “It’s a team of all abilities. Most of our swimmers return year after year; they enjoy

“These are kids who have all kinds of backgrounds - acting, field hockey, basketball,” said Wanner. “They are normal everyday American kids who are here to enjoy swimming and the coaching. They make new friends. There’s no pressure to be something you’re not. The kids love it.
“In swimming, it’s easy to learn the strokes,” Wanner continued. “But to improve, it almost takes constant practice and training. It takes a lot of diligence to become good at the sport. If you keep up with it, you can keep up with it, and the more you do it, the more the love of the sport grows. You basically improve as much as you

“The summer swim team is a really nice program to be involved with,” said Wanner. “It’s a really nice opportunity for kids to be kids in a structured environment.
“Our growth depends on our swim team members,” concluded Wanner. “We’re always looking for more swim team members. We try to keep our team going with a lot of swimmers.”

I was like, ‘Man, this has got to change.’ I had this pressure around me that I took to be Jesus. I went back to prison a seventh time, but there was work being done in my heart.
“What changed?” continued Ryan. “I’d say Jesus did that for me.”
Those happenings on June 15, 2003, marked the spiritual founding of Ryan Forbes Ministries. Since then, the journey and the process have continued, and the man and the ministry have evolved.
“Our mission is redeeming and restoring lives through the love of Jesus Christ,” said Ryan, 45. “I was incarcerated for a number of years in my 20s, and I was set free by Jesus. That has been a continued walk of freedom of many things.”
Ryan performs the mission of the ministry that bears his name through words and actions - through preaching, teaching and speaking. Ryan takes his mission and message to schools, churches, rehabs and prisons, anywhere people are willing to listen.
“I talk about choice,” said Ryan. “You don’t know what’s going to happen, but what you do now can affect your future. My message has to do with choices. With my story, I can really make it fit with a lot of different viewers, that message of hope.”
Since the ministry’s founding, Ryan has catered his universal message to unique audiences hundreds of times, both domestically and internationally. He’s also co-authored a book, “Unchained,” with police officer Wendell Metzler, who helped put Ryan behind bars before becoming the best man at Ryan’s wedding.
“We’re winning souls and providing messages that can help people overcome,” said Ryan. “I’ve met people along the way. I’m not just relegated to guys in recovery or inmates; it’s also the youth. We’re making a push to get into schools
and assemblies.”
Now, Ryan and Caitlyn are juggling the challenges associated with managing a blooming ministry and a growing family. Ryan and Caitlyn are the parents to three children, Cayden, 10; Cameron, 9; and Elliana, 7.
“I’m trying to find a balance between my family vision and figuring out how the ministry plays into our overall family goals,” said Ryan, a resident of Akron. “We don’t want to choose and have our kids pay for the sacrifices. That’s not the goal. The long-term goal is for me and my wife to do the ministry full-time.
“I think we are trying to turn things over to God,” continued Ryan. “That’s where the rubber meets the road. Turning things over to God is an everyday thing. If I throw jobs out, then we need to increase our ministry budget five- or six-fold. There’s a kind of faith you have to work within. I don’t want to be irresponsible.”
After attending Garden Spot High School and securing his GED in 1999, Ryan was in and out of jail six times, initially in Lancaster County Prison and then as a part of the state’s correctional system. The charges against him included fleeing and eluding law enforcement, driving under the influence, aggravated assault and receiving stolen property.
“I was always high and drunk,” said Ryan. “Obviously, it was a letdown going in. But often times it was like this feeling of relief, like ‘It’s over. The running is finished.’ Now, looking back, I felt somewhat safe in prison knowing the boundaries.
“But, in other ways, it was a rough stay,” concluded Ryan. “It was hot, and just missing out on family and friends. You’re always walking around with your guard up. It was scary. You never knew who’s going to do what.”

In the world of scholastic sports, health translates to an absence of injuries. Preseason physical examinations protect - and project - health.
“Sports are meant to be played,” said Dr. John Murphy, a sports medicine physician associated with University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC). “There’s a lot of learning that goes into sports. To participate, you’ve got to do it the right way. I think keeping that in mind is the way to get the most out of sports.”
UPMC is providing scholastic sports physicals for Lancaster County student-athletes seeking to compete in athletics during the 2026-27 school year from 4 to 6 p.m. on Monday, July 27, at its Orthopaedic Care office, 1555 Highlands Drive, Suite 190, Lititz. The physicals, which are required to compete in Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association-sanctioned high school and middle school sports, are free.
“The whole purpose is to identify any prior injury,” said Dr. Murphy, “and to make sure the cardiovascular system is OK for sports. We’re looking for something that could cause an injury if not addressed.”

weights. Murphy stressed that one of the most important aspects of the appointments are individual health histories, which should be completed by student-athletes prior to the exams.
Typically, more than 70 student-athletes from school districts across Lancaster County take advantage of UPMC’s free physicals.
“I think a lot of the injuries are preventable, but not all of them are preventable,” said Dr. Murphy, a resident of Manheim Township.
“The questions are, ‘Are the athletes eating well? Are they getting adequate rest? Are they leading healthy lives?’ For the ones that are preventable, proper training is important, like training gradually, strength training and recovery.
Recognition of anything that’s happening is important, and so is eating, drinking and hydrating. There are gyms and personal trainers that have programs that could prevent tons of injuries.”
According to Murphy, about 40% of student-athletes who compete in sports will sustain some sort of injury during their high school playing days. “But many of them are very minor injuries; they’re not very limiting,” he said.
“It depends on the sport,” said Dr. Murphy. “In general, ankle sprains are a common lower extremity injury. ACLs (anterior cruciate ligaments) are another

common injury, both contact and noncontact. With endurance athletes, stress fractures are huge. Shoulders are common in baseball, softball and wrestling. A lot of it goes back to doing too much or doing things too hard.”
A native of Binghamton, N.Y., Dr. Murphy studied healing and injury prevention during his schooling at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine.
“I think the human body is made to play sports, within reason,” said Dr. Murphy. “Do I think we were built to run 100-mile races? No. But I think we’re very adaptable. Bike Park from
Heatherwood consists of eight miles of trails; a pump track; and a skills area complete with ladder bridges, wooden beams, dirt mounds and adrenaline-pumping descents. The bike park possesses the ability to challenge every level of rider.
From April to November, the Ephrata Bike Park operates a ride share program that makes bicycles available to those without.
“We’re filling a need for the county,” said Ashley. “Before it was built, there were a lot of mountain bikers in Lancaster County, but no mountain bike parks. The demand was high before. There were no opportunities for mountain bikers in their backyard. The people who love mountain biking are in it for the challenges.”
The individuals who frequent the Ephrata Bike Park are typically the outdoorsy types between the ages of 15 and 45. While it is difficult to quantify the number of monthly or yearly riders utilizing the facility, awareness is a factor in the volume of visits.
“We know that it is heavily used,” said Ashley. “I think

people who enjoy that type of activity know about the bike park. We need to keep promoting it. People are always moving into the area, and they might be a family who would use the bike park. But if you talked to the average Joe in the borough, they might not know about the bike park.”
On an implicit level, the Ephrata Bike Park at Heatherwood, which opened in 2019, fits well with Mainspring of Ephrata’s mission. Apparently, fitness is good business.
“Our mission is to grow the economy and build the community,” said Ashley. “Using recreation is a huge piece to that. When the bike park was first envisioned, it utilized an unused area to fill a need. That’s building the community. When people are finished at the bike park, they need a place to recreate. We know that recreation brings people downtown. That’s growing the economy.”
