God is the potter, and we are the clay. It is up to us to put our lives in His hands.
The Potter’s House is merely a place where God performs his transformational work.
“It comes from the Bible,” said Robert Schoonover, the executive director of The Potter’s House, explaining the organization’s name. “We are all His works. It’s about God molding us and creating us to be what He wants us to be.”
An addiction recovery center for men and women, The Potter’s House is headquartered at 261 School Lane, Ephrata. The Christ-centered ministry also operates residential facilities in Leola, Brownstown and New Holland.
Overseen by a board of directors, The Potter’s House takes a holistic approach to addiction recovery, one that focuses on an individual’s physical, emotional and spiritual needs. The Potter’s House also serves as a safe place for former

The Lancaster County Housing and Redevelopment Authority (LCHRA) is requesting the public’s assistance to help the organization best serve people experiencing housing insecurity.

There’s a place in Warwick Township where people can go to get away from the hustle and bustle of their everyday lives. It’s an undisturbed oasis where individuals can connect with their roots, where time almost seems to stand still, where quiet is so profound
that it overcomes any linger ing thoughts.
Millport Conservancy is 75 flat acres of adolescent and mature trees, brush and natural grass, with Lititz Run flowing through it.
“When I’m in nature, it makes me feel refreshed,” said Lynn Myers, a steward of the land and the executive
As the lead agency of the Lancaster County Homelessness Coalition (LCHC), the LCHRA held a virtual meeting with stakeholders on May 21 to kick off the public participation portion of a county-wide initiative, the Lancaster County Housing and Homelessness Strategic Plan. Lancaster County residents can play their part by completing a survey. “We want to get new data about best practices around homeless response and affordable housing and figure out what the needs are,” said Jocelynn Naples, director of communications, development, and special projects for the LCHRA. “We want broad participation across municipalities, across business sectors. Our ideal would be for all county residents to fill the survey out. We know that’s not possible, but we’re trying to push it as widely as we can.”
County residents can go to https://lchra.com to complete the survey, which will be available until approximately Thursday, Aug. 21. The questionnaire will also be publicized on the Facebook accounts for the Lancaster County Housing and Redevelopment Authority and the Lancaster County Homelessness Coalition.
The anonymous survey is composed of 12 questions, including
director of Millport Conservancy. “I can hear the water. A day at Millport is always different. You can’t really describe it without being in it.”
Located at 737 E. Millport Road, Lititz, Millport Conservancy has a mission as a 501(c)(3) to preserve this particular parcel of land and to protect its natural integrity. Millport Conservancy is open to the public and free to visit, but catch-and-release fly fishermen are required to purchase a badge to practice their art.
Swimming is not permitted in Lititz Run at Millport Conservancy. Dogs on leashes are allowed, but owners are asked to clean up after them.
“The land is preserved, and we do what we can to help the environment,” said Lynn. “We’re trying to protect this piece of beautiful land and trying to connect things so it will be here when we’re
not here. Some people have never been here before, and they’ll say to me, ‘Is it open? Can we go for a walk? Tell us about it.’ A lot of people come out of curiosity.”
In addition to Lititz Run as a water attraction, Millport Conservancy features a very manageable nature trail and two walkway bridges over the running water. Trout reproduce in the stream, and the meadow is home to birds, deer, squirrels, rabbits, groundhogs, foxes and minks.
“I think people are curious about what we really are about,” said Lynn. “The fishermen are aware of what
we’re doing. I want everyone to know that they are welcome. I want people to enjoy the land and to appreciate what Millport is about. We appreciate people being respectful.”
In addition to casual visitors, Millport Conservancy hosts birding groups, hiking clubs, nature artists, stream studies, soil studies, school groups and field trips. The organization enjoys a healthy working relationship with Lancaster County Career and Technology Center and the North Museum of Nature and Science and was formerly associated with Franklin & Marshall College.
“It’s a place where you’re totally in nature, and there aren’t many places like that around anymore,” said Lynn. “Some of the students we get have never been out in nature like this before. (Seeing people enjoying nature) is a really good feeling. It’s satisfying and rewarding for my husband and me.”
For her part, Lynn enjoys an emotional connection with Millport Conservancy. Her parents, Robert and Carolyn Wohlsen, founded the conservancy, and now she and her husband, Logan Myers, a former member of

the Warwick board of supervisors, manage and maintain the land.
“It’s pretty much my life,” said Lynn. “I enjoy talking to people who understand our mission. We’re grateful to be out here in nature and away from the world, and I like the school children. It’s become our home.”
Lynn’s parents purchased the adjacent Millport Roller Mill property in 1969 and over the years acquired parcels of land surrounding it. In 1988, Millport was officially recognized as a conservancy.
“Originally, most of the land was used as farmland and to run the mill,” said Lynn. “I think over the years we’ve become more environmentally aware of what a conservancy is. We’ve gotten a greater knowledge, and we’ve learned how to manage the area better.”
“It’s been a part of my life since 1969,” she added. “With my family being so close to it, I’m proud of it. I’m proud of the accomplishments and the success that it’s become.”

inmates transitioning back into society.
The Potter’s House services are provided to its clients free of charge.
“The Potter’s House’s goal is to administer the love of God on men and women dealing with addiction,” said Schoonover. “We just want to help them heal and enter into life for the long haul. We try to be living examples. Everyone here has been in recovery themselves, and they live active and full lives. We do a lot of trauma healing. We want to be friends, encourage accountability and teach (clients) how to respect themselves.”
The Potter’s House’s three-phase, residential programs take up to a year to complete. The programs emphasize discipleship, life skills, prayer, confidence building and character development, and they assist participants in locating and keeping jobs.
“We love these individuals. We all believe they can change and grow,” said Schoonover, a resident of Conestoga. “I love seeing people being restored to hope. I like seeing the light bulb come on. You see people start to get confidence and see them live for more than themselves. They start helping people just like them. I like seeing families restored. I like seeing the cycle of brokenness changed.”
Currently, The Potter’s House has about 30 men and four women enrolled in its recovery programs. They are locals and individuals from outside of Lancaster County who are battling a variety of addic-
tions. Some are fighting multiple addictions.
“These are people looking for long-term solutions,” said Schoonover. “They’re looking for a place to grow and heal. A lot of them are the communities’ brothers and sisters and fathers. We want to focus on a person’s mind, body and spirit. We’re trying to address the whole package.”
“Addiction is a misguided way people deal with pain,” added Schoonover. “People coming out of darkness don’t want to feel what they’re
feeling. It ends up being life controlling, and it can become physically addictive. We believe if we can lead people to Jesus Christ, a lot of them will experience peace, confidence and wholeness.”
The Potter’s House employs 14 staff members. The organization is financially self-sustaining and benefits from fundraisers and donations from churches, community organizations and businesses.
“People change, and
information about the residents’ demographics and household income.
“Our programs are income constrained, so (we need to know if) we are reaching the people that can access our programs and services,” Naples said. “Or do we need to adjust our outreach strategy? We’re really trying to make it representative across not only geography, but socioeconomic distribution as well.”
Naples added, “It will really help us improve how we can reach out and provide services to the people who are in need of assistance and help us do what we’re doing better across the county.”
Justin Eby, who is the executive director of the LCHRA, stated the survey will likely reinforce some of the issues the group believes need to be addressed, in addition to making the LCHRA aware of other areas the group should be focusing on that are burdens to people’s ability to have a roof over their head.
“The county is different as far as housing issues (are concerned),” said Eby. “We want to make sure that we can capture information on people’s struggles, (such as) how to connect with services and the lack of a certain housing types. It will help inform us so we can have actual objectives and outcomes. We don’t want to have a plan where we can’t reach those goals.”
Eby said the LCHC has been around for nearly two decades and moved to the LCHRA’s Penn Square headquarters in 2021. The team works to help spearhead planning, funding, coordinating, and reporting on services to address homelessness.
The coalition is composed of more than 50 organizations in various forms, including housing programs, street outreach, and shelter provision.
The LCHRA asks that people who need assistance dial the United Way’s 211 number or go to https://pa211east .org to find a service provider and be directed to resources based on location.
The LCHRA oversees housing choice voucher
programs for county residents outside of Lancaster city, including a federal rental subsidy program.
Eby said a total of 810 individuals or families are getting this help from the program, which includes assistance for youths and veterans.
Eby explained that vouchers are a rental assistance

The Potter’s House was formally established in 2003, but its work with men experiencing addiction can be traced to seven years earlier. In 2011, The Potter’s House merged with the nonprofit Transition to Community before starting its women’s program in 2019.
