Kids Invited To Explore World of First Responders

You don’t really know if you like something unless you try it. You don’t really know what something is like until you give it a chance.

Cadet Camp provides kids with an in-depth, hands-on glimpse into the professional portion of a first responder’s lifestyle.

“We hope kids want to come out and learn about first responders,” said Kim Herskowitz, Cadet Camp’s coordinator. “It gives them an opportunity to get a little taste of it. It’s an opportunity to try some things they wouldn’t be able to try every day. Maybe we can get these kids to consider it as a career path. It’s about connecting with them while they’re young and seeing if they have an interest. It’s just kind of letting them know what’s out there.”

The fifth edition of Lafayette Fire Company’s annual Cadet Camp will be conducted over two days, from 4:30 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 1, and from 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 2, at 63 Lafayette Way, Lancaster. Cadet Camp is designed for kids ages 8 to 14 who reside in Lancaster County.

There is a fee involved with registering for Cadet Camp, but there are also scholarships available to defray costs. To register, go to www.lafayettefire.com/ cadetcamp before Tuesday, July 22.

“We respond to so many different kinds of calls,” said Herskowitz. “It’s not like a single service anymore.

Steve Loewen grew up in New Holland and attended Garden Spot High School (GSHS), where he took part in Garden Spot Performing Arts productions under the direction of Stan Deen. Nate Deen, also a GSHS graduate, was taken in by Stan as a troubled teen. Their story has now been told on the big screen via the award-winning movie “Brave the Dark.”

In spite of both men growing up in close proximity, Steve and Nate had never met until early 2024 when they happened upon each other in the lobby at Penn Cinema. They got to know each other better over a few lunches at The Split. Both Steve and Nate are self-admitted “car guys,” so, it was no surprise when Nate offered to help out at the 2024 car show Steve oversees each July in New Holland.

Dozens of talented musicians are playing 14 types of instruments with passion and expertise. But the key to their collective sound quality is cooperation, collaboration and coordination.

Members of the Ephrata Concert Band create beautiful music together. “These (musicians) are people who enjoy playing their instruments,” said Jim Kimmel, the Ephrata

The meeting has now proved providential for the pair, who will partner to present the 2025 New Holland Classic Car Show. This year’s 44th annual event, which will benefit the Stan Deen Foundation, will be held in the New Holland Community Memorial Park, 400 E. Jackson St., New Holland, on Sunday, July 13, beginning at 9:30 a.m. when cars may enter the show field. As in the past, vehicles to be judged must be registered by noon on Saturday, July 12. The event will be held rain or shine.

“It’s a way to introduce the Stan Deen Foundation to the New Holland community,” said Nate. “This is where it started.”

We’re constantly being relied on by the community, and things have only gotten busier. All these first responders make such an impact in their communities. The public expects a lot of us, and we want to be ready.”

Cadet Camp teaches through a series of skills stations that participants rotate through - six on Friday night and 10 on Saturday. Each skills station is manned by multiple instructors, and this year campers will learn about hose lines, search techniques, campfire and home fire safety, equipment, cribbing and stabilization, communication and washing apparatus.

Cadet Camp, which is STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) based, also features an obstacle course, tours of first-responder apparatus, an awards ceremony, a demonstration of skills for parents and a cookout. Each camper will be outfitted with his or her own personal protective equipment.

“We get a lot of kids who have someone in their families who are

first responders,” said Herskowitz. “It’s for anyone who has a general interest. We try to make it so broad that it’s interesting to everyone. It’s for everyone interested in first responding.”

In addition to volunteer members of Lafayette Fire Company, officers from local police departments and medical personnel from local emergency service teams will be on hand to impart knowledge from their

particular areas of expertise. It takes nearly 50 instructors to operate Cadet Camp.

“Some of the instruction is based more on the soft skills,” said Herskowitz. “They’re skills that can be applied to almost any job and skills that you can apply in school. They’re skills employers say they’re looking for. (Participants are) gaining skills that

Concert Band’s conductor. “They enjoy making music. It’s very intergenerational. We have a musician who’s 13 years old and a person who’s in their 90s, and it’s all ages in between. My goal is to get people working together and learning from each other. I’m really proud of that generational focus. To me, that’s what a community is, a group of people of all ages.”

The Ephrata Concert Band will perform during two upcoming shows at the band shell inside Thomas Grater Memorial Park, 300 Cocalico St., Ephrata. The first will take place at 7 p.m. on Sunday, July 13, and the second is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Sunday, July 27. In the case of inclement weather, the concerts will be conducted inside the Ephrata Rec Center, 130 S. Academy Drive, Ephrata.

Both performances are free to attend. The Historical Society of the Cocalico Valley will sell bottles of water during each show.

“It’s music that the musicians enjoy and music the audience enjoys,” said Kimmel, a resident of Ephrata. “Most people enjoy a summer night in the park. It’s relaxing and informal. Our goal is to provide a quality performance. I try to educate the audience and give them something fun and enjoyable to listen to.”

recognizable to individuals of all ages,

students involved. When I took over as conductor, I recruited more younger musicians. It’s no longer an old folks’ band. In today’s society, very rarely do we have people of all ages working together.”

“There’s definitely an understanding and an appreciation of music,” said Kimmel. “Music adds meaning to life. By playing an instrument, there are so many functions going on, physically, mentally and emotionally. Staying involved with playing music is one of the best ways to maintain cognitive functions as people age. When you wrap that together with emotions, it’s a wonderful thing. It’s a way to keep people involved with life.”

The Ephrata Concert Band is made up of 45 local musicians playing flutes, clarinets, trumpets, trombones, tubas, French horns, bassoons, bass clarinets, alto saxophones, tenor saxophones, baritone saxophones, oboes and percussion.

Half of the band’s musicians are high school students or college students. Half of the band members hail from Ephrata, and the remainder of the band’s members reside in surrounding communities, like Lititz, Denver and the city of Lancaster.

“It’s a community band,” said Kimmel. “A number of years ago, there were few high school and college

Prior to each Sunday performance, the musicians come together as a band to rehearse that night’s music.

“You have to meet people where they’re at and take them where you want them to be,” said Kimmel. “You have to come into rehearsals with a clear understanding of what you want to attain. Music has so much room for interpretation. If a conductor is not prepared, then the musicians don’t have the ability to follow.”

The Ephrata Concert band was founded in 1975 by John Enck, an Ephrata resident who taught music in the Garden Spot School District. Enck saw music as a vehicle for uniting the Ephrata community.

“A lot of what he used to found the band was his own music and his own equipment, some of which is still being used today,” said Kimmel. “When it started, it was more professional musicians coming together. That’s not as possible (now) as it used to be.”

“Community bands have changed over the years,” continued Kimmel. “One hundred years ago, every town had a community band. They’re almost a thing of the past. But I feel like we’ve had a revitalization of the band.”

are going to benefit them. We want to build those out and be able to work as a team. We’re looking for kids who show leadership skills and who are able to interact with each other. They have to rely on each other just like we as emergency responders have to when we’re out on a call.”

Lafayette Fire Company, which was formed in 1943, is made up and maintained by the work of 80 volunteers - firefighters, drivers, helpers, support staff and administrative personnel. In 2024, the fire company responded to 615 service calls of varying natures.

“It’s hard these days,”said Herskowitz. “Volunteerism is definitely on the decline. People are being pulled in different directions. It takes a dedicated individual with a certain mindset.”

Stan Deen Foundation, went even further in describing the connection between the foundation and New Holland, noting, “It’s a way to give back (to the community).”

Pointing out that residents of the local area embraced Stan and Nate’s story, Graber said, “The New Holland community was highly influential in making ‘Brave the Dark’ happen. We want to give back to the community to Steve and those involved.”

The Stan Deen Foundation became its own entity in late 2024.

“Our mission is to educate and inspire passionate individuals to advocate for vulnerable youth in their communities,” said Graber, adding, “A lot of people have resonated with Nate’s story, so there are opportunities to show ‘Brave the Dark’ at different places.”

Although still a fledgling organization, the foundation was recently acknowledged on the Pennsylvania State Capitol floor while the body was in session, followed by a question-and-answer session with 96th District Rep. Nikki Rivera.
