Cindy Mellinger Is Filling in Her Dash

Every day is a gift from God. How thankful we are is our gift back to Him.
Those are Cindy Mellinger’s words. They are words that Mellinger lives by; they are words that she takes to heart.
Mellinger is a resident of Ephrata, a cancer survivor and a serial volunteer. After inexplicably beating an unbeatable form of leukemia more than 30 years ago, Mellinger has dedicated herself to living her best possible life, and that involves helping others.
“At that time, I asked myself, ‘Did I do anything that matters? Did I do enough for the Lord?’” said Mellinger. “I hadn’t found my purpose. On your tombstone there’s your birth date and your death date, and there’s a dash in between. I asked myself, ‘What’s in the dash?’ I said, ‘Lord, if you take me, I know I’ll be with You. But if you give me an opportunity, I will find what that purpose is.’”
During a ceremony last fall, Mellinger humbly and reluctantly accepted the Northern Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce’s annual Aaron L. Groff Servant Leader Award for her enduring impact on the community. Mellinger, who retired from a productive 40-year career at Blue Ridge Communications in December of 2024, has volunteered countless hours to local causes.

The Upper Leacock Township War Memorial Association (ULTWMA) is opening the doors to its house, inviting citizens and residents in and encouraging them to discover what it’s all about. You might be surprised by what you find inside.

Kyle Offers Big Help for Oliver

Everybody needs a role model. Everybody needs someone to bounce ideas off of. Everyone needs someone in their corner.
Little Brother Oliver has got Big Brother Kyle. It’s an evolving symbiotic relationship that is rooted in mutual respect, empathy and curiosity.
“I wanted to volunteer my time in some way, and Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) seemed like a positive way to do so,” said Kyle. “As our relationship has grown, Oliver seems to respect me more and more and listen to what I have to say. He definitely seems to trust me more as he has become more comfortable. I’m trying to teach Oliver that things won’t always go his way, and that’s OK.”
In March of 2024, Kyle and Oliver were matched by the Lancaster County branch of the Big Brothers Big Sisters of South-Central PA. Included in the match process was an in-depth enrollment process - an interview and staff assessment that identified factors that will support a lasting relationship.
Before meeting Oliver, Kyle underwent a background check and received training.
Oliver is a resident of Lititz.
“The first meet was at Oliver’s house with his mom and the match support specialist to introduce everyone involved,” said Kyle. “At the first meeting, Oliver was pretty quiet and shy, which was to be expected.”
On average, Kyle and Oliver get together about twice a month. Their time spent together includes playing with Legos at Oliver’s house, going bowling, playing tennis and pickleball

there. We just want to see a little more community involvement. This building is for the community.”
ULTWMA is holding an open house at its headquarters at 54. W. Main St., Leola. The welcoming community event will be hosted from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, July 11.
The event is free to attend, and everyone is invited.
ULTWMA’s open house will offer five food trucks, free cotton candy and popcorn and information stations manned by local organizations, police departments, fire companies and first responders.
“Right now, it’s a lot to maintain that old building,” said Chopp. “We’d like to do a little more, and I’d like to see what the community says. We have a lot of ideas on the board.”
Overseen by a 14-member
board, ULTWMA’s physical building features a handful of military displays, commemorative plaques and memorabilia donated by veterans. From November through April, the large main-floor space is home to the Leola Flea Market from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the first Saturday of those months.
ULTWMA’s location includes a fully functioning kitchen, making the place a perfect hall for special celebrations like birthdays, anniversaries, receptions and fundraising events.
Built in 1949, the building was donated to ULTWMA. Over the last 70-plus years, the building has served the community in a variety of ways, including
hosting a breakfast for veterans.
“This was dedicated for veterans in the community,” said Chopp. “It was really a community center back then. They had dances, chicken barbecues, bowling and a library. I’d like to see us get a little more active. I don’t think we’ll ever see bowling again. But I’d like to see a food pantry there or maybe yoga.”
As an organization, ULTWMA supports veterans and the community through sponsoring annual scholarships for Conestoga Valley High School students who are related to veterans, placing flags on the graves of veterans interred in local cemeteries on Memorial Day and hosting a Scouting America flag ceremony in September. ULT-
WMA’s board meets monthly, and the group also conducts a yearly meeting for the public in June. Chopp served in the United States Army from 1981 to 1994. Now he’s a veteran helping veterans.
“I was a service guy,” said Chopp. “There’s a lot of sacrifice that goes on, even if you don’t go to war. It’s a lifestyle. I think we as an organization have to give back and help veterans out. You don’t know day-to-day what your assignment is going to be. You’re really dedicating your life to this. You sacrifice a lot.”

Planned for Children
Child Evangelism Fellowship (CEF) of Lancaster County will offer a new Soccer Party Club to celebrate the World Cup coming to Philadelphia. Soccer Party Club is a 90-minute program that meets for one day. It is free for children ages 5 to 12 and will be held at various locations throughout Lancaster County. The program includes soccer-themed games, a verse, songs, and a lesson. All workers are screened as required by the Child Evangelism Fellowship Child Protection Policy.

Sundaes and Songs Event Set
The Lampeter-Strasburg Community Band will present its annual “Sundaes and Songs” event at Community United Methodist Church, 130 Tennyson Drive, Lancaster, on Friday, July 10, at 6 p.m.
The event will feature games for children, free ice cream with all the fixings, and a trolley ride for those who want to tour the neighborhood in an open-air trolley. The concert will begin at 7 p.m., and selections will include “His Honor March,” “Tijuana Brass Medley,”“Faith Triumphant,”“Cute,” “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “Over the Rainbow,” “Trombone Blues,” “School’s Out,” “Dixieland Medley,” the “Get Smart” theme, and “Paul Simon Medley.” The band will be directed by Howard Boots.

Kyle has also attended Scouting America meetings with Oliver and has helped him construct a pinewood derby car.
“Oliver is overall a very kind, caring 9-year-old,” said Kyle. “He has his moments, as any child does. He likes to learn and enjoys school and being with friends and his teacher.
“What I’ve learned from Oliver is how difficult it can be to be a young child without an adult male figure in their life,” continued Kyle. “I’ve always had two present parents and never experienced what he has. I have also learned how important the time I spend with him is to him. My childhood was very good; both parents were present and were both positive role models who definitely shaped me into the person I am today.”
The need is great. Right now, there are more Little Brothers and Little Sisters in Lancaster County than there are Big Brothers and Big Sisters.
Currently in Lancaster County, 15 adults have been matched with kids through the Big Brothers/Little Brothers and the Big Sisters/Little Sisters programs. There are 13 male children waiting to be matched with Big Brothers locally.
“A small amount of volunteer time can go a long way in not just helping to better someone’s childhood today,” said Kyle, “but potentially positively impacting who they become as a young adult and for the rest of their life.”
“Our goal is to create developmentally appropriate matches that align with the needs of the Little and the strengths of the Big, setting the foundation for a positive, impactful connection,” said Katie Gleason, vice president of programs for Big Brothers Big Sisters of South-Central PA. Big Brothers Big Sisters of South-Central PA is currently seeking to establish a physical office in Lancaster County. The organization already operates offices in Harrisburg, Lebanon, York and Carlisle.
“After a match is established, BBBS match support staff provide ongoing, relationship-focused support,” said Gleason. “Staff check in regularly with both the Big and Little, as well as the parent or guardian, to strengthen the relationship, ensure child safety, offer guidance and support goal setting and youth development. This consistent oversight helps matches navigate challenges, celebrate successes and build a meaningful, lasting bond.”

Trivia Event Planned
The Moravian Center of Lancaster will present a trivia contest on Saturday, July 11, from 4 to 6 p.m. on the second floor of 227 N. Queen St., Lancaster. Featured trivia questions will be about music and artists from the ‘50s through the ‘80s.

Big Brother Kyle and Little Brother Oliver
Grants Awarded for Native Plantings
The Giant Company, known locally as Giant and Martin’s, in partnership with Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful, has announced the 21 recipients of its 2026 Healing the Planet grants.
A total of $100,000 was given to support projects across the company’s operating areas in Pennsylvania.
Among the grant recipients were the 18th Wonder Improvement Association in Reading, the Lititz Public Library, and the York County Industrial Development Authority.
Since 2021, Giant has partnered with Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful to offer over $1.4 million in Healing the Planet grants to recipients to help
fund projects that connect communities with green spaces; protect and improve local waterways and water resources; prevent, reduce, and recover food waste; and support native plantings and habitat restoration.
Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful supports community improvement initiatives and encourages community leadership, responsibility, and respect for the environment. LCCTC Students Compete at National Event
Three students from Lancaster County Career and Technology Center (LCCTC) recently traveled to Atlanta, Ga., to compete at the SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference. The event took place from June 1 to 5.
Carly Hoffman placed first in the Dental Assisting - Secondary competition, and Ashton Gonzalez placed first in the Dental Assisting -
Postsecondary competition. Both are students in the Dental Assistant program at LCCTC’s Willow Street campus. Hoffman is from Elizabethtown Area School District.
In addition, Alyssa Nessinger participated in the Advertising Design competition, placing 13th. Nessinger is from Cocalico School District and is enrolled in the Commercial Art program at LCCTC’s Brownstown campus.

“(The cancer) felt like a sinus infection, and I never had sinus infections,” said Mellinger. “I really wasn’t feeling well. I was just so exhausted and so tired. I thought it was just me pushing hard at work. I was in my 30s, and the doctors told me it was terminal. I was like, ‘Wow, I don’t want to die.’ I made arrangements with a funeral home. At that point, I realized, ‘How was I going to be remembered?’”
In 1994, Mellinger was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia, an aggressive form of blood and bone marrow cancer. Through treatments at local hospitals, Mellinger was in remission for six years.
But the cancer returned, and on September 13, 2001 - a date that she now marks as her birthday or re-birthday - Mellinger underwent a transplant procedure thanks to a bone marrow donation of 7.4 million stem cells from her younger sister, Cherri Maurer. Despite the new bone marrow, chemotherapy and nearly 100 units of donated blood, Mellinger was given only a 30% chance to survive.
“I was told I wouldn’t live past one or two years,” said Mellinger, who has also faced struggles with

anorexia throughout her life. “By the grace of God, I’m now going on my 25th year. I no longer go for checkups. Now I know my reason for being here is to help people.”
Not long after recovering from the bone marrow transplant operation, Mellinger became a spokesperson for blood donations and a hospice care volunteer.
“Some people came to me and asked me to walk in their cancer journeys with them,” said Mellinger. “I got to meet a lot of wonderful people. I met a lot of people who were fighting battles.”
Currently, Mellinger is involved with nearly 20 altruistic organizations - nonprofits, civic groups, churches, community causes, libraries and local municipalities. Since her initial cancer diagnosis, she has donated thousands of volunteer hours to a total of more than 40 worthy causes.
“I have not stopped,” said Mellinger. “I have volunteered seven days a week. Opportunities came to help people.”
“I was given 25 years I wasn’t supposed to have. I’m very blessed to be here,” concluded Mellinger. “I’m nothing. I’m just here to bless and help people. There is so much pain in the world. There are so many people who just need a smile.”
