“The culture of Cavod is friendly, family-oriented, and welcoming,” said Connie Dienner, founder and director of Cavod Academy of the Arts, 665 W. Main St., New Holland, and Cavod Theatre, 641 W. Main St., New Holland.

“We value each person for the gifts God gave them,” said Dienner, who added that the organization’s new tagline is “Create With Purpose.”

Cavod Academy will give area families an opportunity to learn more about the academy if they visit an open house on Saturday, July 13, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. for tours of the facility and a chance to meet the instructors. The academy, which is now in its 15th year, offers classes in a variety of disciplines, including dance, gymnastics, music, and theater. Classes are open for children

Local Squadron Offers Learning And Adventure Squadron 304 of the Civil Air Patrol (CAP), which meets regularly at the Lancaster Municipal Airport, is happy to expound on the origins of the organization. “(CAP) started during World War II,” said Broad, who added that the first members were coastal watchers, scanning both the east and west coasts of the U.S. for enemy submarines.

CAP, which is an auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force, was officially established in December of 1941.

When Lisa Colon’s son, Isreali, went to Army boot camp in 2016, Lisa looked for other area mothers who would understand that experience and offer answers and support.

“I have a friend at church whose son was in the Marines, but he was out by then,” said Lisa. When Isreali was stationed at Fort Riley, Kan., Lisa found an online group called Fort Riley Mothers of Soldiers made up of women who supported each other.

Squadron 304, one of nearly 1,500 operating nationwide, is part of the 31st Wing, which is the Pennsylvania division of CAP. The 31st Wing was the second in the nation to become active.

Nationally, the organization includes 58,000 senior members

- those age 21 and over - and youth members - people ages 12 to 20.

The weekly cadet program focuses on military leadership, character development, and physical fitness. Greg Sollenberger, who serves as aerospace

education officer for the squadron, said that the participating cadets are also offered a monthly aerospace class that includes lessons ranging from rocketry to orientation flights. “Each cadet builds a rocket from a STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) kit,� said Sollenberger, who discusses a range of aerospace-related topics

with the cadets.

CAP members may also be called upon to help locate missing aircraft and persons. The organization may be contacted by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency, or the Air Force Rescue Coordinator Center for disaster response. “When an aircraft goes down, it

CAP has the largest fleet of single-engine Cessnas in the world, boasting more than 550 aircraft. Squadron 304 does not yet own a plane, but members are hoping to procure one in the near future. The organization currently raises funds by parking cars at a number of local events, including the Lititz Craft Show, Community Days held at the airport in August, and at the Rough and Tumble Museum and Hospice auction.

Broad excitedly shared that a new drone program is about to change the way those searches are handled. Broad’s latest job at the Wing level is to start a drone search program. “ We will be looking at aircraft that have crashed as observers, and we will be doing lost persons evaluations,� explained Broad, who held the first training session for 24 volunteers at Hawk Mountain the first weekend in May. Cadets who are 16 years or older may be trained and certified to use the drones as technicians or observers. “(The) drones will be used for emergency services, and they don’t go beyond our visual line of sight,� explained Broad.

“Ride it, push it, tow it - we’ll accept it,” said Lancaster County Cruisers member Gary Heim of Willow Street, inviting owners of cars, trucks, and motorcycles to enter the club’s 20th annual car show on Saturday, July 6.

In addition to no requirement for the vehicle to be operational, there are no rules regarding age, make, or model.

“Bring anything; we don’t discriminate,” said club vice president Jack Parke of New Providence.

“We get some cool hot rods and rat rods,” club member Barry Harsh of Mountville commented.

“Even some barn finds,” Parke added.

Club member Don Teeter of Willow Street is the proud owner of an antique 1983 Honda Accord SE. It might be surreal to think of vehicles from the 1980s and 1990s as classic or antique cars, but according to the Pennsylvania Code, an antique vehicle is any that has been manufactured more than 25 years prior to the current year.

Every half hour, attendees will have an opportunity to win door prizes donated by local businesses, and at the end of the open house, a grand prize featuring a variety of experiences, including tickets to shows, will be given away.

This year’s open house will emphasize a number of new teachers and upgrades to Cavod programs. “We have a new acrobat/gymnastics teacher,” said Dienner, referring to Jessica Rajski, who comes to the academy from Houston, Texas, with several years of teaching experience. Rajski trained and performed with Chimal Circus Performing Arts of Houston, and she has toured the world with trEd Dance Company. Rajski has also added a program called Dance, Step, and Stomp for all ages and all levels. “(The students) dance with their own rhythm. They might use barrels and sticks,” said Dienner. “It’s a cool class.”

Dance Company To Host Classes Laurel Dance Company, 514 E. Main St., Ephrata, is adding a session of its Musical Expressions classes and more ballet offerings to its summer schedule.

All class times and days are subject to change based on class size and registration.

Musical Expressions, on Wednesdays from July 10 to Aug. 14, will include Emotions in Motion from 6 to 6:45 p.m. for children age 12 years and under and Mindful Movement from 6:45 to 7:45 p.m. for teenagers and adults. At its June 24 special meeting, the board of Conestoga Valley School District appointed Rachel Metzinger to become the Conestoga Valley High School (CVHS) assistant principal on July 1. Metzinger is taking over the role from Shalana Coleman.

Metzinger had been the RtII coordinator for CVHS since 2015. Prior to that, she worked as a life skills teacher at CVHS from 2009 to 2015. She also served as a special education adjunct teacher at Gwynedd Mercy University from 2008 to 2009 and as a district learning support teacher at Souderton

Area School District from 2005 to 2009.

While in her role as RtII coordinator, Metzinger developed curriculum and intervention programs for Tier 1 through Tier 3 students in ninth through 12th grades, resulting in an average growth of 22 percent in RtII supports and services since the 2015-16 school year. of armed service members,” explained Lisa. “When they got more than 1,000 responses, they decided to form an official group.” National Blue Star Mothers of America was chartered by Congress in 1960.

Lisa learned that no Blue Star Mothers group existed in Lancaster, and she reached out to the group’s national-level representatives. Armed with the information they sent and with the help of Dawn Wardell, a friend from Calvary Church where Lisa attends, Lisa set out to gather the five members she needed to charter a group.

Word of mouth brought her the women she needed to designate the five officers, and the group submitted paperwork to the National Blue Star Mothers in September 2018. When they learned of a Lehigh Valley group within the 30-mile marker range,

they had to ask that group’s permission to form. “(The Lehigh Valley group members) were excited for us,” said Lisa, who completed the charter over the phone with the national vice president and a former national president. “ We became the founding mothers of the Red Rose Blue Star Moms,” said Lisa, who said the red rose was chosen as it is the symbol of Lancaster County.

The group currently meets on the third Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. in room 314 of Calvary Church, 1051 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster. Meetings are open to the public, and new members are welcome.

The chapter began taking part in efforts such as Valentines for Vets, which provided cards to area veterans through the local Veterans Affairs office. Lisa added that the chapter is involved in a similar

effort that sends birthday cards to deployed service members whose birth dates are provided by their parents.

On Memorial Day, the chapter held its first event at Lancaster Cemetery. Called “A Rose for Every Stone Memorial Day Tribute,” the event featured live music, speakers, and more than 1,000 roses from the Memorial Day Flower Foundation. “We joined forces and raised more than $1,100 to place (roses) on the tombstones of 1,037 veterans in the Lancaster Cemetery,” said Lisa. A number of other local groups took part in the event, including the Red Rose Veterans Honor Guard, AMVETS Post 19, Lancaster City Republican Committee, and Sons of the Union Veterans of the Civil War. Additionally, the Red Rose Blue Star Moms placed flags on the graves on May 25.

At the ceremony, Rebekah Hill sang the national anthem, and James Reichenbach, president of

Lancaster City Council, spoke about what military service meant to his family. Ray D’Agostino, who is retired from the U.S. Naval Reserve and the Pennsylvania Army National Guard, spoke about comrades who did not return, and how it felt knowing they had made the ultimate sacrifice. Between speakers, members of the Blue Star Moms read the

names of America’s wars, including the time frame and number of casualties from each. Lisa spoke about how the number of roses created a visual of how many soldiers are buried in the cemetery, and she invited everyone present to place roses on veterans’ graves throughout the 22 acres of the cemetery. The service closed with a gun salute performed by VET 21

Honor Guard, the playing of taps, and a prayer.

Students at Chesterbrook Academy Preschool at Lancaster Labs in Leola celebrated Earth Day on April 22 by releasing 5,000 ladybugs throughout the schoolyard and back into the environment on plants, flowers and trees with the goal of helping local vegetation. Students dressed like ladybugs, wearing red and black clothing and antennae. Leading up to Earth Day, students learned that ladybugs serve as a natural pesticide by feeding on insects that could otherwise harm the health of gardens, trees and shrubs.

The design of the Profile of a CV Learner was created by CV students Catherine Scala, Alayna McEvoy and Natalie Kiel. In the design, the CV logo sits in the center. Surrounding it in a circle are five puzzle pieces, which are a nod to CV’s Character Education program. Surrounding these is CV’s motto, “Character, Community, Commitment.”

With the logo complete and the resolution passed, the district will now work on creating additional resources for staff and parents to help implement the Profile’s five categories both in and out of the classroom. A rollout of the Profile and these resources is planned for the start of the 2019-20 school year.

The organization seeks to empower women by equipping them with tools and information to make healthy choices about pregnancy and parenting. A Woman’s Concern (AWC) Pregnancy and Parenting Resource Center held its 2019 annual Partners’ Dinner on April 11 at Calvary Church in Lancaster. The banquet had the theme “Unique and Wonderfully Made” and featured acclaimed international speaker Dr. Ron Archer, founder of Archer International Ministries; consultant to Fortune 500 companies, U.S. presidents, and the United Nations; international spokesperson for Gideon Bibles; and chaplain for the NFL. More than 500 people attended the event this year. The Lancaster County Department of Parks and Recreation will offer programs to the community. Unless otherwise noted, there is a per-person fee for the programs, unless noted separately, programs will take place at the Environmental Center in Lancaster County Central Park, 1 Nature’s Way, Lancaster. Registration and payment are required by noon on the business day before the event, unless stated otherwise.

Native Flower Power will be held at the Exhibit Farmhouse, 2 Exhibit Farm Drive, Lancaster, on Sunday, July 7, from 1 to 2 p.m. The program is designed for children ages 3 to 7.

Participants will walk, observe, and learn about the native

wildflowers at Muhlenberg Meadow with a naturalist.

A Nature Merit Badge program for Boy Scouts, age 10 and older, will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, July 9 and 16 and Aug. 20. Boy Scouts working on the Nature Merit Badge may explore plants, mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians, and the soil and rocks underfoot. A naturalist will assist Boy Scouts in completing badge requirements over three sessions. Much of this badge will be completed during the park meetings, but Scouts will be responsible for completing some sections on their own. Scouts should dress for outdoor activity and bring a water bottle, snack, and binoculars, if available.

- ½ tsp. garlic powder - ½ tsp. paprika - ¼ tsp. fresh ground pepper - a dash of cayenne pepper - 4-6 sprigs fresh oregano

Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Cut potatoes into smaller wedge-shaped pieces (I did half, quarters, then eighths). Place cut potatoes on baking sheet(s). Make sure they’re not crowded; use 2 sheets if need be. In a small bowl, combine olive oil, Parmesan cheese, salt, garlic powder, paprika, pepper, & cayenne pepper. Mix until combined. Pour about 1/3 of oil mixture over top potatoes & using hands, rub oil until potatoes are evenly coated. Bake in oven for 45-60 minutes, turning potatoes & reapplying oil mixture every 15 minutes until fries are golden brown & crispy. After the first 15 minutes, mince oregano leaves & sprinkle on top of fries. Remove from oven & let cool slightly. Serve hot.

Towne Club of Lancaster concluded the club year with its annual membership luncheon at the Lancaster Country Club on May 21. Three students were selected to receive a Towne Club Scholarship of $1,000 each that will be applied to their education at a technical school this fall.

VFW Post Is Holding Clothing Drive

The Ephrata American Legion Riders will host the Bill Royer Memorial Ride in honor of a local hero on Sunday, July 7, starting at the Ephrata American Legion, 100 Cocalico Creek Road, Ephrata.

Registration will start at 10 a.m. at the Legion Rider tent in the parking lot at the First Sunday Breakfast held at the American Legion.

The guided ride will start at noon. It will travel through southern Lancaster County toward the Strasburg Railroad and return to the Ephrata American Legion for light refreshments.

Bill left for the Navy in 1943 after graduation and was an original crew member of the USS Lexington CV-16 as a fire control director of a 40 MM anti-aircraft battery. He was awarded many honors, one of which was the Star of the Presidential Unit Citation for extraordinary heroism displayed by the members of the USS Lexington against the Japanese forces in the Pacific War era.

Bill was a 55-year member of the Ephrata Cloister Post American Legion and held almost every officer position on the board, including former post commander. He enjoyed dining at the Legion on Friday nights with Helen, his wife of 67 years. Bill retired from D&E as a supervisor after 42 years, was an instructor for the American Red Cross in sailing and water safety, and was also an official for the Ephrata swim team. He was a member of the Ephrata Blue Lodge 55 and the Train Collectors Association.

Charles Ludwig VFW Post 7362 of New Holland is holding its fourth annual clothing drive to support the veterans at the Coatesville Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center. The items that are sought are new and gently used men’s clothing; new women’s clothing (no used clothing); new socks, T-shirts, and undergarments; new and gently used men’s and women’s shoes, sneakers, and work boots; and new and gently used coats, jackets, and outerwear.

New and used suitcases and carryon bags are also being collected, so that veterans have something to carry their personal items in when they leave the medical center. Donated items must be clean and serviceable; no children’s clothing should be donated.

Post 7362 notes that many veterans arrive at the VA Medical Center with only the clothing they are wearing. The center’s services include training, counseling, health care, rehabilitation treatment programs, physical services, and more. Offerings are open to male and female veterans.
