TThere’s More to LCFH Than Meets the Eye

he Lancaster County Food Hub (LCFH) is the possessor of one fine title. But perhaps the organization should be called the Lancaster County Food, Clothing and Shelter Hub.

Despite its formal name, LCFH concerns itself with three of the five basic human needs. And because those needs in Lancaster County are great, that makes the local nonprofit’s work even more important.

“We just haven’t changed our name yet,” said Paige McFarling, who’s been LCFH’s executive director for four years. “We’re getting there. I think it’s essential that we come up with a name that shows who we are and lets people know what we do.”

From a 27,000-square-foot renovated warehouse located at 812 N. Queen St., Lancaster, LCFH provides food, clothing and shelter services for county families and

individuals in need. Serving with faith and compassion, LCFH distributes its services without asking questions and with few limitations.

Clients or neighbors are not required to show identification to receive services. LCFH does ask that clients receive food no more

than once a calendar month and clothing no more than once every two months.

“We envision a Lancaster County

Recreation is a key element of a healthy lifestyle. And music is one of the most energizing forms of recreation.

Akron Borough Council’s upcoming summer concert is simply a way for it to enhance the lives of the 4,000 residents it serves.

“Borough council wants to provide an opportunity for friends and neighbors to come together and build us all up as a community,” said Bonnie Young, who’s been a

member of Akron Borough Council for four years. “Borough council is working hard to benefit the community in the best ways possible. Everything we do is thinking about the community and making it an uplifting place to live.”

Akron Borough Council is sponsoring an appearance by the local band Mitch and the Moodswings at 6 p.m. on Sunday, July 6, at Lloyd H. Roland Memorial Park’s Pavilion 2, 221 N. 11th St., Akron. The twohour concert, which will include an intermission, is free to attend.

where everyone lives a life of stability and dignity,” said McFarling. “We’re hoping to build relationships. Basic human needs are what it takes for us to survive. If I’m helping someone with food and clothing, I’m freeing them up for their rent payments. Rent eats first. And if they can make their rent, maybe they can go to the doctor.”

In 2024, more than 73,000 visitors received services from LCFH, about 56,000 of whom were food recipients. Many of those LCFH neighbors earn less than 180% of the federal poverty level, and about 60% of those who visit earn too much money to qualify for federal government subsidies.

its work is supported by more than 100 active volunteers. Much of the nonprofit’s food and clothing are donated, and the organization is funded through grants and donations from community members, churches, foundations and corporations.

“I get to live my values every day,” said McFarling. “I put great value in the idea that we can all stand in the community and be better. We can try to make things better for each other and we can do that lovingly, mercifully and with humility.”

Mennonite Life Sets Book Auction

Mennonite Life, 2215 Millstream Road, Lancaster, curates rare and historically significant books and offers them for sale at three annual auctions. The next Rare and Used Book Auction will take place in the Mennonite Life Community Room on Friday, July 11, at 6:30 p.m.

Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. PO Box 500, Mount Joy, PA 17552 TOWNLIVELY.COM

“They’re individuals who cannot make ends meet,” said McFarling, a resident of Lititz. “We support hundreds of unsheltered neighbors each year. By and large, they’re Lancaster County residents, but we don’t turn away anyone who comes. We’re going to make sure you get what you need. You just walk in the door. We help them find resources in their areas of need.”

The need is profound, and the demand is growing.

In 2024, LCFH provided 28% more services than it did in the previous year. This year, LCFH is on pace to provide 45% more services than it did in 2024.

“For people who are heavily subsidized by government funding, it’s getting worse,” said McFarling. “Those living in poverty are struggling. This long-term economic uncertainty is leading to desperate times for our clients and neighbors.”

LCFH employs 10 staff members, some on a fulltime basis and others on a part-time one, and

LCFH was originally established in 1947 as the Lancaster County Council of Churches. The organization moved to its current location in 2014, and then, through a strategic planning inititative, was renamed in 2019.

“It started as a collection of churches that wanted to do a number of things,” said McFarling. “They thought they could do more in the community together than alone. There were all denominations involved. Their first undertaking was the clothing bank, and out of that grew the food bank, and they started providing other services as well. As the council grew, they were relied upon by the community to be responsive. Food and clothing were always a need, and shelter. Over the years, the basic commitment to human needs has remained.”

“Over the last couple of years, we’ve worked very hard to get the name out and let people know who we are and what we do,” McFarling continued. “We’re probably (still) in the process of letting people know what they’ll find here when they come.”

For additional information, go to www.lancaster foodhub.org.

The auction will also feature Magnus Friedrich Roos’ “Die Lehre und Lebensgeschichte Jesu Christi,” published in 1776; “The Wenger Book,” including index; a signed copy of “The Earth Is the Lord’s” by John L. Ruth; 112 issues of “Mennonite Family History”; 115 issues of “Pennsylvania Mennonite Heritage”; and multiple issues of “Mennonite Quarterly Review.”

Bids may be submitted online and by mail until Thursday, July 10. Auction books are on display in the Mennonite Life Community Room.

Mennonite Life’s vision is diverse communities connecting across boundaries by knowing and valuing their own and each other’s stories of life, faith, cultures, and histories.

The full auction catalog is available for download at www.mennonitelife .org/events. Notable lots in this auction include a 1740 copy of Menno Simons’ “Ein Fundament und klare Anweisung,” second edition; a 1681 copy of Menno Simons’ “Opera Omnia Theologica”; a 1793 printing of Johann Arndt’s “Paradies Gärtlein: Wie solches zur Uebung des wahren Christenthums durch geistreichen Gebete”; “Annals of the Conestoga Valley” by Mast and Simpson; and an 1814 “Martyrs Mirror,” published by Joseph Ehrenfriend in Lancaster.

Lancaster County Cruisers Will Hold 25th Annual Car Show

The Lancaster County Cruisers will celebrate a silver anniversary of sorts.

The group will hold its 25th annual car show on Saturday, July 5, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Willow Street Fire Company, 2901 Willow Street Pike, Willow Street.

No registration is needed. Anyone wishing to participate can bring their cars, trucks, and motorcycles. There is a fee to take part; the event will be held rain or shine. More than 25 trophies will be awarded, and the first 200 participants will receive a dash plaque.

“Everybody likes to come to our car show for some reason,” club member Judy Andrews said. “They think it’s a very nice show. We’ve even been told from people in Maryland that they like to come to our show.”

There will also be a model car contest for kids, with trophies awarded to the top entrants.

Food trucks will be on-site selling french fries, hamburgers, tacos, and ice cream. There is a pavilion with seating for visitors to enjoy their food. Vendors will sell their wares, and the club will hold a bake sale and also sell T-shirts. A DJ will be playing oldies.

Hogs and Heroes Foundation, a community of motorcycle riders who sup-

port military causes, will have a stand.

Those attending the car show are asked to bring nonperishable canned goods to support the food pantry at the Willow Street United Church of Christ (UCC).

Proceeds from the registration fees and bake sale will be donated to Solanco Neighborhood Ministries, Hope’s Haven, Building Bridges, and Willow Street UCC.

Between 300 and 400 vehicles take part annually.

“It’s a great day to be outside and see a wide variety of cars,” event organizer Chris Weir said. “It’s not just a ‘Vette show. It’s not a show for any one type of car. You will see lots of them as well as motorcycles.”

The Lancaster County Cruisers club has been in existence since 1994.

“We’ve had a lot of good years, and we just keep getting bigger,” said Andrews.

Bring Something, Buy Something Benefit Scheduled

Mervin Beiler is always quick to greet visitors at Sunny Sunbeam located in Bart Township, a workshop that serves members of the Plain community with special needs. Sunny Sunbeam is one of several workshops found throughout Lancaster County. This year, Beiler’s friend Elmer Smucker joined Beiler in saying hello. The workshops, which provide socialization for adults with special needs and welcome respite for their parents, are supported by an annual auction.

This year, the 19th annual Special Needs Benefit Auction will be held on Monday, July 7, at Fisher’s Quality Dairy Sales, 3304 B Old Philadelphia Pike, Ronks. The auction will begin at 10 a.m., but breakfast food items will be offered for purchase at starting at 5:30 a.m., with drive-through service available.

Sunny Sunbeam attendees visit the center on Mondays and Wednesdays over the summer and on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays during the other seasons. Participants arrive at 9 a.m., and the day begins with devotions, which includes reading a chapter from the Bible,

praying, and singing. Caregiver Sarah Fisher noted that lessons - arithmetic, reading, spelling, and English - are part of each morning session. Lunch is at 11:30 a.m. Some days participants bring their own lunches, and some days the meal is prepared at the center. Beiler reported that the lunch on June 11, which happened to be eaten outdoors, featured potatoes, meatballs, peas, and salad. Apple crisp was served for dessert.

After lunch, there is a story time, followed by projects to be worked on. Fisher said that the group still packages poly clothespins and makes keychains with beads. Male members of the group mow the grass.

On June 11, boxes of snap peas awaited the group of 15 in the cool of the workshop. Another new project involves packing paper tablets. Beiler explained that packaging the tablets involves cutting, adding

helped to curate various exhibits on Lafayette and currently serves as the American Friends of Lafayette curator.

This presentation is part of the museum’s Lafayette Lecture Series and will be held on the first floor of the Rock Ford Barn. The doors will open at 1:45 p.m. There is a fee for admission, and tickets may be purchased at www.historicrockford.org/ special-events.

stickers and magnets, and then putting the tablets in bags.

Together, Sunny Sunbeam and the other centers - Sunbeam, Special Hearts Circle, Caring Hearts, New Horizons, Upper Valley Workshop, Shady Hollow, and Sunnyside Specials - give the more than 100 adults who attend a chance to socialize and do productive work. Beiler noted that two of the Sunny Sunbeam attendees come from Maryland.

Highlights of this year’s auction will include carriages, swing sets, and sheds. A 26-by-28-foot garage, built on the highest bidder’s site, will go up for auction. The building will have a concrete floor, two garage doors, and an attic with stairs. Other items will include grills, scooters, wagons, tools, and outdoor furniture. Quilts made at Caring Hearts are scheduled to be sold at 4 p.m.

Beiler said that he enjoys helping out at the auction.

“I’m looking forward to it,” he stated. Fisher noted that Beiler will hold up items that are being auctioned and then take them to the winning bidder. Food that will be available for purchase at the auction will include egg sandwiches, doughnuts, breakfast logs, and coffee. Among the lunch items will be cheesesteak sandwiches, barbecued chicken and ribs, sub sandwiches, ham and cheese sandwiches, fried shrimp, salad, fruit cups, french fries, blooming onions, and soft pretzels. The list of beverages offered will include smoothies and iced coffee. Ice cream, fry pies, and baked goods will be on the dessert menu. Food may be eaten on-site or taken out.

Those who would like to donate items to the sale may call 717-687-5152 and 717-768-7417. On the day of the sale, individuals with questions may call 717-455-3987.

Mitch and the Moodswings

Audience members are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, blankets and even a picnic supper. Bathrooms will be open and available.

“To me, it’s joyful, just the music itself,” said Young. “It’s uplifting and cheerful. It’s just a very positive vibe.”

The lively concert will include about 30 recognizable numbers, hits from the ’60s and ’70s, rock ‘n’ roll, Motown, soul and rhythm and blues. The selections are intended to engage the audience and compel members to dance or move their feet in some rhythmic way.

“We’ll be throwing a whole bunch of stuff at you,” said Mitch Mohler, the band’s front man and lead singer. “The coolest thing about this is the band’s connection with the audience. It’s incredible. It’s unbelievable how the music will make the audience feel a part of it.”

The audience is expected to number more than 200 members, including individuals from Akron and surrounding communities.

“It brings back memories for many people,” said Young. “All ages actually like it. It’s a fun and lively kind of music. This is the third year we brought this group back because people love seeing them. It’s cute to watch. It’s very theatrical. I think this group has a following.”

In addition to Mohler, Mitch and the Moodswings is made up of two lead guitarists, a bass guitarist, a drummer, a saxophone player, a keyboardist and two female vocalists. Members of the band hail from East Earl, Denver and Marietta.

Mitch and the Moodswings’ show in Akron is one of nine performances, mostly in Lancaster County, that the band will stage this summer. This summer marks 21 years of the band playing together.

“We love having people out there,” said Mohler, who resides near Brickerville. “I can’t describe that feeling to you. That’s what makes this so much fun. It completes me. Entertaining and seeing people’s responses completes me. It’s awesome.”

from pg 1

The July 6 performance is the only concert being sponsored by Akron Borough Council this summer.

“We put a lot of emphasis on recreation when it comes to Akron,” said Young. “We put a lot of money into our parks. We think our parks are an important part of living a healthy life, a happy life.

It’s a priority for Akron Borough Council. We want to do things that benefit the Akron community, but we want to be fiscally conservative.”

“Akron is a really friendly place,” continued Young. “It’s a safe place. It’s charming. It has a hometown feel to it. It maintains a little tradition. It’s a beautiful place to live.”

OMPH Holds End-Of-Year Events

Our Mother of Perpetual Help (OMPH) School in Ephrata recently celebrated the end of the school year with special ceremonies for the two preschool classes and two kindergarten classes.

The preschool classes put on an Alphabet Fashion Show. The children each represented a letter of the alphabet and created an outfit using photos and drawings of items that began with their chosen letter. Students also read a page from the classroom book they helped write and received special certificates.

The kindergarten classes held a special moving-up

Native Plant Kit Sale Posted

To help nurture more watershed-friendly properties, Penn State Extension will offer Master Watershed Steward Watershed-Friendly Native Plant Kits for sale through Sunday, July 13.

The kits are designed to help individuals incorporate more native plants into their property. The pickup locations will include sites in Lancaster, York, Berks, and Chester counties.

The kits contain plant plugs carefully selected from species grown by Kind Earth Grower using locally collected, open-source pollinated seeds and 50% peat-free growing media. Plant plugs are smaller than those typically found in nurseries, allowing for easier transportation and planting within existing vegetation. The plugs have healthy root systems that should establish this fall so plants can flourish next growing season.

The kit options are the Sunny Dry Bottoms Kit and the Shady Dry Bottoms Kit for drier-soil

areas; the Deer-Resistant Kit; and the Groundcover Kit, which contains low-growing plants that will spread, helping to retain soil moisture and block unwanted seeds from soil contact. Single-species kits are also available this year, including native sedges for patches of lawn replacement. All kit options are available in two kit sizes.

Bountiful Kits include five species with five individual plants of each species, for a total of 25

plants. Container Kits include five species with one plant of each species, for a total of five plants.

Individuals may choose their kit and select the pickup location most convenient to them. Proceeds will support the Master Watershed Steward program in providing volunteer-driven education and restoration work in the region.

More information about the plant kit sale is available at https://bit.ly/ NativePlantKits.
