By Ann Mead Ash

In spite of the inclement weather last year, Rotary Club of Lancaster member Russ Harlan was impressed with the turnout at the 2018 Wheels and Wings Festival and 5K. “(Overall), we had half the attendance of the year prior, but we still had 91 runners in the 5K, and 70 car owners still showed up,” reported Harlan. “I was supremely impressed with 70 cars (coming out for the show) in the rain.” This year, organizers plan to bring back the activities they had planned for last year that were designed to entice more families to the event. The 2019 Wheels and Wings Festival and 5K, which will be held at the Lancaster Airport, 500 Airport Road, Lititz, on Saturday, June 22, will feature two bounce houses, helicopter rides for purchase, and a flying rebuilt Huey helicopter

from the Vietnam era. Festivities will kick off with the 5K race at 8 a.m. A fly-in and a car show will be held from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. Live music will be performed beginning at 10 a.m. The event will be held rain or shine, and there will be no charge for spectators to come and enjoy the day. Parking will be provided by suggested donation. This year, day-of 5K registration will begin at 6:45 a.m. Medals will be awarded to the overall top male and female finishers, as well as to the top three male and female finishers in seven age groups. Runners may register at www. pretzelcitysports.com. Tech shirts will be included with registration while they last. The 2019 Wheels and Wings Festival and 5K, sponsored by the Rotary Club of The car show is open to Lancaster, will feature planes, helicopters, and a 5K when it is held at the Lancaster trucks and motorcycles as well Airport in Lititz on June 22. “Walking Backward Into the Future,” a conversation with Pueblo Native American elder Larry Littlebird of New Mexico and Dr. Greg Valerio from the British Isles, will take place on Thursday, June 20, at 6 p.m. at St. James Episcopal Church, 119 N. Duke St., Lancaster. Littlebird and Valerio will share stories rooted in the ancient wisdom traditions of the indigenous Celtic people and tribal Native Americans. The stories to be shared illuminate historical layers of settler colonialism, racial injustice and climate

disruption. The event is meant to chart a way toward peace, justice and reconciliation. Littlebird is a storyteller, filmmaker, artist, author, social activist and speaker who shares stories from his tribal American oral tradition. With his wife, Deborah, he co-founded an indigenous continuum retreat center and sustainable living farm called Hamaatsa. Valerio is the spiritual director of the Society of St. Columba, a monastic agrarian community on the South Downs of England. Valerio has a Master of Arts in Celtic Christianity and is an international speaker in the New Monasticism movement. An advocate for socially marginalized people and indigenous communities around the world, Valerio was honored by Queen Elizabeth II in 2016 for his humanitarian work in fair-trade gold mining in Africa and South America. To purchase tickets, readers may visit www.brownpapertickets.com and search for “Walking Backward Into the Future.” More information is available by visiting Dr. Greg Valerio (left) and Pueblo elder Larry Littlebird will www.listeningground.org or emailing present “Walking Backward Into the Future” on June 20 at St. littlebirdtwo@gmail.com. Rock Ford from pg 1 Rock Ford Plantation has announced the launch of a series of podcasts about Gen. Edward Hand, who served as adjutant general to George Washington during the Revolutionary War, and the history of his home at Rock Ford. The series is produced by Heather Teysko, who has a long-running independent history podcast and has been broadcasting since 2009. Although she currently resides in Spain, Teysko grew up in Lancaster, where she served as a docent at Rock Ford while in high school. She has retained a strong interest in her former hometown and is enthusiastic about demonstrating how small museums can use podcasting to tell their stories to a wider audience. Teysko’s podcast is currently a threeepisode miniseries consisting of her discussions with Rock Ford’s board president, executive director and curator. The first episode focuses on the life story of Hand. The second discusses Rock Ford in the broader context of Lancaster and American history, and the third episode is a walk-through of the first floor of the mansion with the curator, highlighting some items in the collection. The podcast may be found on www.rockfordplantation.org and will also be available on iTunes, SoundCloud, YouTube, Spotify, Stitcher and all podcast apps. It may be found by searching for “Lancaster’s Hidden Gem of the Early American Republic.” Rock Ford Plantation was built in 1794. It is located at 881 Rockford Road, Lancaster, and is open for tours on Tuesdays through Sundays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. from April to October. It is operated by the nonprofit Rock Ford Foundation. For more information, readers may visit the aforementioned website or call 717-392-7223. Pictured on front: The history of Rock Ford Plantation and former inhabitant Gen. Edward Hand will be examined in a series of podcasts. Three episodes have been produced so far.

Participating pilots will receive a gift bag and free registration. Even with the lowered attendance, the 2018 event raised $12,500 for an initiative of the United Way of Lancaster called Summer Youth Experience. Summer Youth Experience includes programs that are carefully selected for their benefits to students, specifically helping at-risk youths bridge the gap between the end of the spring semester and the return to school in the fall. This year, organizers hope to raise more than $15,000 to benefit the program. Harlan noted that being involved with Rotary and specifically with the event has shown him how people in the area respond when others are in need. “There’s something special about Lancaster County in the way groups like Rotary embrace the community,” he said. Harlan cited Summer Youth Experience as an example of how area residents reach out to others. “These programs can change the trajectory of someone’s life for the better,” he stated. “That’s incredible to see.” He is also grateful for the benefits of his Rotary experience, saying, “It has helped me grow as a person and a leader.” Readers who would like more information about the event may visit the Lancaster Rotary website. Pupventures Lets The Dogs Out By Dayna M. Reidenouer

Want to make a difference in the life of a dog but cannot commit to full-time ownership? Then you might be a candidate for Pupventures, a program of the Pennsylvania SPCA Lancaster Center. Center volunteers have been taking dogs staying at the shelter, 848 S. Prince St., Lancaster, on adventures in the community. “We have volunteers take the dogs out almost every day,” said site manager Rachel

Golub. “We have a list of approved locations for volunteers to take the dogs to as well as general rules for taking the dogs out, such as no greeting other dogs, no going to dog parks, and no one under 18 is allowed to handle the dog. Most people take the dogs to one of the nature preserves, hiking trails, or parks on our approved location list, but they can opt to go to places like Lowe’s or Splits & Giggles as long as we’ve cleared the dog to go ahead of time.” Volunteers are asked to spend a

While experienced dog owners are preferred, Golub noted that everyone is welcome to volunteer, as all types of dogs are typically available, ranging from low maintenance to highly rambunctious. “Even if someone is inexperienced with dogs, we should have a dog they can walk,” she said. Only dogs available for adoption are able to go on field trips. Each canine is put through a behavior assessment and a personality assessment based on the American SPCA’s Meet Your Match program. and her staff members ensure that volunteers are qualified and prepared for the responsibility of caring for a dog, even if it is just for a few hours. Once volunteers complete an online application, they receive a link to an orientation video that provides information on the shelter and how to safely move animals in and out of the kennels. After successfully passing a short quiz, the volunteers are scheduled for individual training with a staff member. Pupventures was created to help to reduce kennel stress and to provide dogs with enrichment and increased visibility in hopes that they will be adopted, said

Pennsylvania SPCA public relations director Gillian Kocher. “These outings give the shelter valuable insight on how the dogs behave outside a shelter environment. It’s also a great excuse to spend a day doing something new or exploring what Lancaster and the surrounding area have to offer,” Kocher explained. “Similar programs at shelters across the country have been enormously successful, and the Pennsylvania SPCA Lancaster Center is excited to introduce this to the area. We invite the public to be on the lookout for our pups in the community, (accompanied by volunteers who will be) posting photos

on social media and helping the adoptables find their families.” The Pennsylvania SPCA is one of 100 shelters nationwide that is participating in the Arizona State University/Virginia Tech Maddie’s Nationwide Fostering Study. Virginia Tech assistant professor Erica Feuerbacher noted that the study will assess the effects of fostering for shelter dogs and the shelters themselves. For more information about volunteering, readers may call Golub at 717-9176979, ext. 503; email rgolub@pspca.org; or visit www.pspca.org/volunteer.

Our Mother of Perpetual Help School (OMPH) eighth-grader Matthew Mercer earned first place in the state level of competition of the You Be the Chemist Challenge, competing against 26 students in the state competition held at Penn State University on April 26. He will move on to the national competition to be held in Washington, D.C., on Monday, June 17. Sponsored by the Chemical Educational Foundation, the You Be the Chemist Challenge aims to engage students in answering science- and chemistry-related questions throughout a daylong academic bee-style competition. At the local and state challenges, participants answer several rounds of multiple-choice questions. Students participate individually in the Challenge competitions. The students who score the highest move on to the next level of competition with the top participant from each state advancing to the National Challenge. The competitions encourage collaboration among the industry, schools, educators, and community partners to support early STEM education and provide students in fifth through eighth grades with an introduction to chemistry concepts. OMPH is located in Ephrata. For more information, readers may call 717-738-2414 or visit www.omph.org.
