Local Recreation Promotes Healthy Work-Life Balance

East Lampeter Township is 12 months into its grand recreation experiment. Time for an update.

While results have been mostly mixed, some positive and quantifiable progress has been realized. But much work remains in the new recreation department’s mission to get the word out and provide activities that appeal to a majority of East Lampeter Township residents.

“I always feel like we can be doing more and reaching more people,” said Lisa Cleveland, who as recreation director makes up East Lampeter Township’s one-person recreation department. “Growth

is not resting. Am I happy where we are in the time we got here? Yes. Do we have more work to do? Yes. The opportunities are endless, so there are always things that are going to be new.”

Since officials made the commitment to provide recreational opportunities to the township’s citizens on May 28, 2024, by hiring Cleveland as recreation director, the newly formed East Lampeter Township Recreation Department has instituted a number of programs and activities, some of which have been well received. The department has provided community events like movie nights, a fall festival and an Easter egg hunt; youth events like Hero Hang-Out, Touch-a-Truck

and a summer playground program; fitness and yoga programs; and educational programs like a bird walk and Exploring the Night Sky.

This spring, the department introduced a community gardens program that allows individuals and families to rent plots of land at Community Park for growing vegetables, plants and flowers. Twelve of the 16 available plots are currently being utilized.

The recreation department has also placed a strong emphasis on promoting and utilizing township facilities like Community Park, Flory Park, Lafayette-Tower Park and Gibbons Park at Nolt’s Mill, as well as fostering relationships with like-minded community partners.

“Swing!” Will Connect Audiences With Their Mojo

What possesses the power to bring a tap to your toes, to put a bounce in your step, to bring a snap to your fingers?

Swing music. And the performers of Servant Stage. “Swing originated in the 1920s and was popular in the 1930s and ’40s,” said Johnathan Bauer, who founded Servant Stage in 2013.

LCWG Is Made Up of a Bunch of Do-Gooders

Good is universal, timeless and objective. Because it mirrors God, good is good.

The Lancaster County Women for Good (LCWG) group knows some things about the concept of doing good. It’s part of the all-volunteer organization’s mission, purpose and reason for existing.

“We use that word a lot, ‘good,’” said Anna Horst, the chairperson of the five-member board that oversees LCWG’s operations. “It’s

in our name. I think it’s safe to say our connections and providing nonprofits with resources is part of the good we aim to do. I think there are a number of nonprofits in Lancaster County who have amazing missions. They’re real people trying to help real people. They are problems that a majority of us would agree need to be solved. Maybe we need to be more clear by what we mean by ‘good.’” LCWG, which does not operate from a physical office or building, conducts more than 15 membership events each year, including

All proceeds from sales at the store benefit the animals and programs of Humane PA.

The shop is located in a bright purple building behind Humane PA’s adoption center. The shop is volunteer operated, and it sells goods donated by community members.

“The building has been here since before the Humane League of Lancaster County and the Humane Society of Berks County merged to form Humane PA. It was a veterinary clinic,” explained Karel Minor, president and CEO of Humane PA. “The Humane League had moved the vet clinic, and (the building)

Surrounded by Amish farmlands in the heart of the PA Dutch countryside, this family owned and operated business uses special mouth-watering recipes that are making their beef, chicken, and sausage pies more famous with each passing year.

From the humble beginnings in their Amish farmhouse kitchen to a USDA inspected commercial enterprise, the quality and taste of their pies remains the same, even as the distribution has increased from one market stand to multiple stores and farm markets throughout Pennsylvania and surrounding states.

Recreation Department

“Our mission is to provide recreational opportunities for residents of all ages,” said Cleveland. “One of our focuses is to build community and bring our community together.

We want to provide people with a lot of different interests so we can reach a broader group of people. I’m trying to do programs for specific ages groups and programs

that are cross-generational as well. You try what you can, you put things out there, and sometimes they’re a big hit, and sometimes they’re not.”

“Recreation means to re-create,” added Cleveland. “Recreation is different for everyone. It can be anything that gives you a break. Everything we’ve done so far has been related to learning as well.”

Some of the current recreational programs and activities being presented for local consideration are Beginner Birding, Goat Yoga, Yoga in the Park and Chair Yoga, Walking Club and Zumba classes.

The rec department is also sponsoring two free workshops for senior citizens - Senior Scam Prevention at 1 p.m. on Thursday, July 17, and How To Protect Yourself Against Identity Theft at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 20. Both workshops will be conducted at the East Lampeter Township Building, 2250 Old Philadelphia Pike, Lancaster, and participants are asked to register beforehand at www.east lampetertownship.org.

“I think there’s a portion of the community that does know about (recreational opportunities),” said Cleveland. “I think we’re gaining some ground through newsletters and word of mouth. We’re gaining some momentum. We’re getting there. Success would be if we could just increase our exposure. We want people to see the programs we have and figure out what they enjoy doing.”

“I’m one person,” added Cleveland. “There are a certain number of hours in each day, and you have to work within your budget as well. But seeing the community benefit from it is a really good feeling, especially when (the members) are gaining knowledge and fitness.”

Settled in 1723 and incorporated as a township in 1841, East Lampeter is 20 square miles of rural and agricultural land. According to the 2020 United States census, 17,834 individuals reside in East Lampeter Township.

Many of the townships that surround East Lampeter support recreation departments that have been operating for decades.

“I feel like East Lampeter is a welcoming, vibrant community,” said Cleveland. “We’re trying to build a little bit of an identity. We’re planning large events in the future to get more people out together. I feel fortunate to work in the community. Everyone I’ve met here has been positive and grateful for the programs.”

“Ideally, I’d like us to grow to a point where we can find a recreation center and have a space we can call our own,” Cleveland added. “That would be great if we could do that somewhere down the road.”

Prior to opening the shop, Minor visited similar facilities in Florida. “There are two very large (stores operated by the) Vero Beach Humane Society, and they have 20,000 square feet between the two stores and they (raise) half of their budget,” he noted. “I checked out their stores and talked to their managers.”

The Thrift Kitty Thrift Boutique features several rooms, including a kitchen, where household items are displayed.

He said that the key to operating a successful thrift store is to sell only donated goods and to operate using only a volunteer staff. “When we were looking at the economics of having donated stuff and (using)

all or mostly volunteer staff, it’s all profit,” he said. “If you have to buy things and if they don’t sell, you are wasting money. “

Renovations were made to the facility, primarily by volunteers along with some Humane PA staff members who worked during their

“Swing!” from

“It came from the American community, specifically Harlem. It’s higher-energy, joyful music. It swings on and off the beat. It has a fun energy to the rhythm, and the dancing highlights that as well.”

“Even though it’s from a specific time period, the energy of the music makes it still popular today,” added Bauer. “I love that it’s still going strong.”

Over the next three months, the local traveling theater troupe Servant Stage will bring its rendition of the Broadway musical “Swing!” to a venue near you. From early June to early August, Servant Stage will conduct nearly 40 performances of “Swing!” at local schools, churches, parks and retirement homes.

The 90-minute shows are free to attend, and good will offerings will be accepted. Interested individuals are asked to reserve tickets at www.servantstage .org/shows/2025/swing.

“I think it’s a show that will put a smile on your face,” said Bauer, a resident of Strasburg. “All the singing and dancing is contagious. The wonderful swing band is going to be fantastic. We have five incredible vocalists. Their storytelling brings the show to life. We have these incredible dancers who employ the joyfulness and playfulness of the style of swing. It’s also a community event. We’re hoping the audience will join in as well. I hope people can sense what fun the show ‘Swing!’ is

Servant Stage will perform “Swing!” publicly at Lancaster Alliance Church on select dates from Friday, June 6, to Sunday, June 15; at Brickerville United Lutheran Church on Wednesday, June 25; at Strasburg Community Park on Sunday, June 29; at Summit Grove Campground on Sunday, July 13; at Tulpehocken Trinity Church on Thursday, July 24; at New Holland Park on Sunday, July 27; at Bergstrasse Lutheran Church on Wednesday, July 30; at Lititz Springs Park on Sunday, Aug. 3; at Tel Hai Retirement Community on Thursday, Aug. 7; and at Warwick Middle School from Friday, Aug. 8, to Sunday, Aug. 10. For more details, including performance times, visit the aforementioned website.

“There are so many reasons why theater is important, just the way the arts can build community,” said Bauer. “At the heart of it is storytelling, because when you do that, you see things through different perspectives. It takes a community to put these productions together, and if the community didn’t come to watch it, there would be no reason to put them on. It builds community. We need community and to be coming together as community.”

The 40 local individuals involved with the staging of “Swing!” include rotating performers, musicians and production team members. They

hail from a variety of Lancaster County communities, like Lititz, Ephrata and Quarryville.

“We have seasoned performers - phenomenal singers and dancers,” said Bauer. “We have students who love singing and dancing. Then we’ve got amateurs who do it for the love of it. We have performers who are incredibly talented. They love theater, and we’re able to work around schedules.”

Over three long weekends between Thursday, Sept. 11, and Sunday, Sept. 28, Servant Stage will perform “A Tale of Two Cities,” based on the novel by Charles Dickens, at Warwick High School. Rehearsals for that show will begin in July.

Servant Stage is also planning 60 performances of Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” between Thursday, Nov. 6, and Monday, Dec. 22, at various venues across Lancaster County.

“When Servant Stage was founded, the idea was to use theater and the arts as servants,” said Bauer. “There was all this great talent and all this appreciation for theater in the community. We wanted to make it so it was available for everyone. We wanted to strip away any kind of barriers for people to enjoy theater.”

“(Servant Stage) really hasn’t slowed at all,” Bauer continued. “The biggest surprise to me is how quickly it’s grown. Ten or 12 years goes by pretty quickly. Our growth has been exciting. There haven’t been any plateaus.”

one on the second Wednesday of each month, at various locations throughout the county. Those events revolve around the process of providing grants generated through membership dues and social fundraisers to local nonprofits.

“We have a shared purpose to benefit others outside of our group,” said Horst, a resident of Lititz. “The mission is a unifying thing. The women of the group are generous and genuinely curious. It’s special to get together with a group of women and have purpose.”

LCWG provides one grant to a Lancaster County nonprofit in each quarter of the year. LCWG members nominate worthy nonprofits and a general vote of the membership determines three finalists. After the participating nonprofits make presentations about the merits of their missions, LCWG votes again to determine that quarter’s grant recipient.

Typically, the grants range between $4,800 and $7,100. Since its inception in August of 2022, LCWG has awarded 10 grants to county nonprofits like SWAN (Scaling Walls a Note at a Time), Aevidum, Phoenix Assistance Dogs of Central Pennsylvania, Hope Inspire Love, Clare House, Arch Street Center, Aaron’s Acres, North Star Initiative and Power Packs Project, totaling $62,000.

“The only common thread with the grants is that they go to nonprofits serving the local Lancaster County area,” said Horst. “Their services have to directly impact Lancaster County. We’ve also provided awareness. I feel like we strengthen the fabric of Lancaster

County by contributing to its resilience. We feel like the nonprofits of Lancaster County are already doing good work. We believe the people closest to the communities are best equipped to know the needs.”

Currently, LCWG’s active membership is made up of 96 women who work or live in Lancaster County. They hail from all parts of the county.

“They are women who want to be part of something bigger than themselves,” said Horst. “They like that this is a very accessible way to volunteer in Lancaster County. It’s a way to connect with other like-minded women. They all want to see our community thriving and flourishing. We try to make an inclusive environment where everyone’s voices are heard. They all feel like they need to do something. (The grant) is a democratic process.”

“My favorite part is the connection with a diverse group of women,” she added. “But they all have this drive for working

together for the community. I like seeing the impact. Pooling our resources, time and skills to benefit Lancaster County feels really good.”

LCWG was established in August of 2022 through an online social giving platform, Grapevine. LCWG has brought together dozens of Lancaster County women who were already looking for ways to give back.

“(Grapevine) reached out to start a group local to Lancaster County,” said Horst. “They sort of initiated the group, and the locals drove it from there. We have a good group of leaders who are committed to the cause. I think we’re becoming a more confident organization. The members can know what to expect.”

“The camaraderie is something special,” Horst continued. “A lot of the women enjoy the friendships they are making. A lot of these women are business owners, so we network and support each other.”
