teps to Success has some important things to show you. They are things that have the potential to brighten your children’s futures.
Steps to Success is opening its doors to the community it serves.
“My biggest thing is that child focus,” said Adriana Witman, who’s been Steps to Success’ administrative director for five years. “We want to plant good seeds in good soil. We want to have an environment where kids feel safe and feel secure and where they can be creative. It’s giving them an opportunity to use their imaginations, to grow and become productive citizens.”
Beginning at 6 p.m. on Thursday, June 12, Steps to Success will conduct its inaugural open
house at its Zion Lutheran Church home, 18 Quarry Road, Leola. Facility tours of Steps to Success’ eight classrooms for infants and toddlers, young toddlers, older toddlers, preschool children and prekindergarten students will be offered.
There will also be opportunities for visitors to meet staff members and teachers, review materials and curriculum, ask questions and learn about financial options. The event is free and open to the public, and the community is encouraged to attend.
Visitors may register at www.stepstosuccessinc.com/ openhouse.
“We’ve never opened the doors to the community before,” said Witman. “We’re looking to get enrollment up. We want to give parents an opportunity to see our

A couple of bean bags. Two inclined boards. Twenty-seven feet of lawn.
For the Junior League of Lancaster (JLL), cornhole is more than a game. Cornhole is an avenue for bringing neighbors together to help fellow neighbors, a vehicle for feeding the hungry and a fun fundraiser.
“Cornhole is one of the fastestgrowing sports in America,” said
Tesla Atkins, one of the organizers of JLL’s upcoming cornhole fundraiser. “It’s easy to set up a tournament. It’s something everyone could do and enjoy. It’s a summer fun activity. We’ve gotten a lot of community (support) in the past. They come for cornhole but maybe have a fun time watching polo as well.”
The fourth edition of JLL’s annual Cornhole Classic will be staged from noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday, June 15 - Father’s Day -
facilities and get a chance to talk with our teachers. It’s just to have an open door for them.”
Currently, enrollment for the 2025-26 school year is open and Steps to Success has openings for a total of 20 children across its programs. Steps to Success offers child care services for Lancaster County children from age 6 weeks up to kindergarten and offers before- and after-school services for Conestoga Valley and Donegal students.
“(The open house will) be more of a laid-back feel so parents can get a feel for what a classroom is,” said Witman. “It won’t be as busy as a normal classroom day. There will also be age-appropriate activities, learning materials in the classrooms and a chance for one-on-ones with the teachers.”
“I want the open house to be an

Philanthropy is universal and timeless. The act of giving back is not bound by race, ethnicity or color.
The Aastha Horizons Fund is managed and operated by a group made up of predominantly Lancaster County Indian-Asian Americans. Its mission is to help everyone in an attempt to make their home a better place to live.

at the Lancaster Polo Club’s Forney Field, 70 Church St., Lititz. The rain date for the family-friendly community event is scheduled for Sunday, June 22.
Players are encouraged to register for the tournament at www.jl lancaster.org/the-cornhole-classic/ or in person up until 12:30 p.m. on the day of the event. Prizes will be awarded in advanced, intermediate and beginners’ categories.
At 2 p.m. on that same day, the Lancaster Polo Club will host a home match.
An admission fee will be charged to cover all the activities that day.
“Some of the (cornhole) players in the advanced group travel to events and they’re the crowd to beat,” said Atkins. “I think my favorite part of the event is getting to play cornhole with people you care about. It can be a spouse, a friend or a loved one. Spending quality time with a loved one, you really can’t go wrong.”
In addition to flying bean bags and polo, JLL’s Cornhole Classic will also feature eight food trucks, music, a silent auction, games, beverages and local artisan vendor stands.
“The vibe is whatever you want it to
be,” said Atkins. “It can be chill playing cornhole, or you can watch polo. You can go shopping with the vendors. We will also be honoring dads and making sure they have great times as well.”
The event is expected to draw nearly 100 cornhole players and another 400 spectators and visitors. JLL is hoping to raise $15,000 to battle food insecurity in Lancaster County.
JLL is self-funded through sponsored community events and dues paid by members.
“We are trying to raise funds to fight food insecurity,” said Atkins.
“We are women-led, but we are supporting everyone in Lancaster who is
struggling with food insecurity. We have a community impact group and a fund development group. We support a number of initiatives throughout Lancaster. Whether we’re sending a volunteer or a monetary donation, we want to invest in community programs. We want to be intentional in helping groups.”
Headquartered at 1130 Marietta Ave., Lancaster, JLL is one of nearly 300 chapters of the Association of Junior Leagues International located in the United States, Canada, Mexico and the United Kingdom. The local branch, which was formed in 1923,

“We are trying to promote and perpetuate social change in Lancaster,” said Atkins. “We’ve kind of been silently helping for years. But the only way to grow is to let people know what we’re doing. We’re so welcoming and
inclusive. It’s awesome to make new friendships. It’s so many women from so many walks of life, and everyone has a hand in our accomplishments.”
“The Junior League of Lancaster is doing wonderful work,” continued Atkins. “Even if you don’t know about cornhole or polo, come out and learn about us. It’s going to be a great day. Just get to know us a little better.”

in a child care center gives them a really good foundation for the learning years. We set them up for success. We want them to grow up to be police officers, doctors and teachers themselves. You see differences in children who go to child care centers. We set them up to be quality community members who are making a difference in the world.”
“It’s also so important for children to be around other kids, just getting social skills they can’t get at home,” continued Witman. “Establishing that at a young age is important. You don’t want to go to kin -
dergarten and not have those social skills.”
Steps to Success employs a total of 50 staff members, 44 of whom are teachers. The organization is funded by tuition fees, grants and government subsidies.
“When Michelle (Harbaugh) started it, Steps to Success was a tiny, little day care center,” said Witman. “It’s grown into an even higher-quality program. We added new programs. We added new curriculum. We added more teachers.”

“My favorite part is the philanthropy,” said Manjeet Kaur, one of the founders of the Aastha Horizons Fund and a resident of Manheim Township. “We’ve been given so much by Lancaster County, and now we want to give back. Everybody does it for different reasons. I saw my family and dad (give back). When you see enough of it, it feels like your duty.”
“Giving begins at home,” said Reema Parikha, an advisory group member who resides in East Hempfield Township. “I feel like this fund is the gift that keeps on giving. It’s amazing to see how these funds are used.”
Overseen by an advisory group and conducted in association with the Lancaster County Community Foundation (LCCF), the Aastha Horizons Fund is a giving circle that raises funds through donations and distributes them to Lancaster County nonprofits via a grant application process. The fund’s advisory group meets on a regular basis but does not operate from a brick-and-mortar office.
Translated from Indian culture, Aastha means faith, belief, trust and hope for a better tomorrow.
“Aastha is a very simple word,” said Kaur. “As humans, we can approach people who are looking at the dawn and give them a little bit of extra hope for a better tomorrow. It’s what we want to do. We want to make a difference. We want (the fund) to continue to grow.”
Aastha Horizons Fund’s grant process is initiated with advisory group members inviting local nonprofits to apply for grants. Once the grant applications are received, the advisory members meet as a group, discuss the nonprofits’ merits and needs and then vote on the applications.
Before a final approval is granted, the advisory group interviews officials of the nonprofits requesting the grants.
“We try to focus on organizations that are less heard of,” said Nishit Trivedi, a member of the advisory group who resides in West Hempfield Township.
“It’s not just the money,” said Rao Sankarmanchi, an advisory group member and a resident of West Hempfield Township. “We’re looking for people to partner with as volunteers. We want to help out in any way we can.”
Typically, the Aastha Horizons Funds awards grants in the $2,500 range. In 2024, the fund awarded five grants to local nonprofits, and over the course of its three-year existence, the Aastha Horizons Funds has granted more than 10 awards, including ones to Power Packs, Lancaster-Lebanon IU13, the Turkish Philanthropy Funds, Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development, Milagro House, Aaron’s Acres, Reach Out and Read of Lancaster
County, Lancaster Science Factory and Elizabethtown Community Housing and Outreach Services.
“As we’re going through the grant process, the organizations are getting to know us, and they’re sharing about us,” said Rakesh Popli, a member of the advisory group and a resident of West Lampeter Township. “In three years, I feel like we’ve accomplished some significant achievements.”
“I think the word is getting out (about the Aastha Horizons Fund’s work),” said founding member Deepa Balepur, who resides in West Hempfield Township.
Aastha Horizons Funds raises money through events and private donations, some of which originate from the members of the advisory group.
“It’s a giving circle,” said Trivedi. “We have resources coming in, and the funds are managed by the Lancaster County Community Foundation, and the grants are written by the community foundation. While the funds are sitting there, they are invested and managed properly.”
Near the end of 2021, Balepur was an LCCF board member when she had an idea that evolved into the Aastha Horizons Fund.
“Deepa started the process,” said Kaur. “It was her vision, and she connected people. She called me to be part of the process. I was already
involved with a similar organization, but we were mostly putting out fires. What Deepa told me is, ‘We’re trying to do it as continually funding.’ That really resonated with me.”
“I was exposed to the concept of collective giving at Lancaster County Community Foundation,” said Balepur. “It was very intrigu -
ing. As I started talking to people, there were others who wanted to be engaged as well. Everybody brings different levels of expertise. It started with ‘it sounds cool,’ but it can be better if we bring other people on board.”
