Squaring off against human trafficking

Contested on indoor or outdoor courts, pickleball is a sport similar to tennis and pingpong played with a hard plastic ball and a paddle. Now a local nonprofit is seeking to capitalize on pickleball’s recent popularity to battle human trafficking.

Enter North Star Initiative (NSI).

NSI’s next annual pickleball tournament is almost upon us. The competitive event will raise money and awareness in the fight against human trafficking while promoting the growth of the blossoming sport.

“It’s a way to get the community involved with something that’s going on in our own backyard,” said Alex Wagner, NSI’s marketing and communications director. “There’s a whole community that is super excited to play. The rules are easy to pick up. It’s something that’s fun and brings everyone together.”

The second edition of NSI’s pickleball tournament will be contested on Saturday, June 15, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Manor Middle School courts, 2950 Charlestown Road, Lancaster. In the case of rain, the event will be pushed back to the next Saturday, June 22, at the same time and place.

Teams of two players can register by going to www.northstar initiative.org/events before Friday, June 7.

“It’s a very family, fun atmosphere,” said Wagner. “There are tons of spectators and supporters. But there’s going to be a lot more going on than just a pickleball tournament. We also want people to know who we are

as an organization.”

NSI’s pickleball tournament draw will be broken down into three divisions: beginner, intermediate and advanced. Each division can accommodate up to 25 teams.

The sponsored event will also include music provided by a DJ.

“It’s a mix of everyone,” said Wagner of individuals expected to attend. “It’s both supporters of NSI and pickleball players. It’s pickleball players who play regularly and neighbors. We’re hoping the brackets will make the tournament more competitive.”

NSI had so much fun with its initial venture into the competitive pickleball world in 2023

that it decided to stage another tournament this year. Last year’s event netted over $4,000 for NSI, a total the nonprofit is hoping to double this year.

“All of the money raised will directly support our women going through our program at The House,” said Wagner. With facilities to support up to 10 residents, The Harbor is a safe house that provides support in the form of classes, therapy and life skills development.

“Different people have different capacities to give,” said Wagner. “No matter how big or small it is, it truly makes a difference in the lives of these women. NSI’s

Nothing quenches thirst for summer music like lemonade concerts

The Lancaster Lemonade Concert Series (LLCS) is cool, it’s refreshing, it’s delightfully delicious - not unlike the summertime drink bearing its name and served at the end of each performance.

The Lancaster Lemonade Concert Series is back, as big and entertaining as ever. Quite frankly, it’s a great way to spend warm Thursday evenings in

Education is about the journey and the destination. The annual commencement ceremony at Lancaster Mennonite School (LMS) celebrates both. LMS’ mission is to send forth students with the ability to change the world through Christ-like love and service. In so doing, the school fosters

lifelong learning.

“We’re proud of the Class of 2024, their accomplishments and who they are,” said LMS high school principal Kirk Benner. “This class is very generous, very creative, very flexible and willing to serve others. They line up with the school’s mission just by who they are. We know that God has great plans in store for their future.”

Art and the outdoors go together like a brush and a canvas, like the Lititz Art Association and Venture Lititz, like Quick Draw and Taste of Lititz.

Venture Lititz and the Lititz Art Association are pooling their talents and resources to stage a unique outdoor art event designed to enrich the community. Quick Draw and Taste of Lititz are a couple of simultaneous local happeningsan event within an event.

“Our goal with the Lititz Art Association is to foster and promote the arts and partner with other organizations which have similar purposes,” said Donna Felton, a board member of both the Lititz Art Association and Venture Lititz. “Venture Lititz and the Lititz Art Association are a natural combination; we work on projects together. All of the board members have their own specialties, and my role for Venture Lititz is for the arts.”

Held in conjunction with Venture Lititz’s tradition-rich Taste of Lititz street festival, Quick Draw is a judged and timed art competition pitting local artists against one another for cash prizes. The Quick Draw contest will be held at the Lititz Moravian Church, 8 Church Square, from 10 a.m. to noon on Friday, June 7, and then the artists’ creations will be put up for display and sale. Manheim Township.

“It’s held in a church setting, and the air conditioning makes it a cool atmosphere,” said LLCS board member Kathy Seaber. “People are talking, but they’re very attentive during the performance. It’s every informal. It’s very relaxed. People come casual. It’s very charming. It’s a fun evening.”

Conducted at Highland Presbyterian Church, 500 E. Roseville Road, Lancaster, LLCS is a series of eight concerts given mostly by local musicians and bands on Thursdays at 7 p.m. The popular summer series will kick off on June 13 with Auscultation Brass and will conclude on Aug. 8 with a performance by Lancaster Marimba Ensemble.

There will be no show on July 4.

The performances, which are typically 90 minutes in length, are free to attend, and good will offerings are received during the intermission of each one.

“The musicians enjoy performing; that’s why they want to come back the next year,” said Seaber. “I think it’s that homey atmosphere. The performers know that people appreciate

concerts

their talent. That has to make you feel good as a performer. What performer doesn’t appreciate applause?”

This year’s LLCS will also feature Celtic Americana band Rizzetta’s Tones on June 20, Shaun and Kayla Ressler accompanied by A. Scott Williams on June 27, John Darrenkamp & Friends on July 11, “I Got You Babe: Let’s Duet” featuring Reji Woods on July 18, the New Holland Band on July 25 and the Lancaster British Brass Band on Aug. 1.

“Some of the bands have quite the following,” said Seaber. “People know about our concerts in the summer on Thursdays. It’s kind of established; it’s familiar and regular. Each show is a variety of songs, maybe even something you don’t know. The audiences like when the performers talk to them. That makes it personal and familiar. But all of the performers are good in their own way.”

While the variety of LLCS’ music is wide and familiar, the series places an emphasis on patriotic music, including marches, Broadway show tunes, operatic music, Irish songs, movie and television show themes and popular music.

GARDEN & MULCH

Typically, between 200 and 400 people attend the concerts.

“The median age of the audience is probably 60 or older, but we do get some families,” said Seaber. “It gives people something to do in the summer.”

This season will mark LLCS’ 51st series of concerts. LLCS can trace its origins to the early 1970s and the Lancaster Opera Company Associates.

“It continues a tradition of supporting local talent and providing entertainment in the summertime that appeals to a wide audience,” said Seaber. “We’re still here. We’re sponsoring another season, and it’s going to be a good season. Finding the groups, calling the groups and organizing is hard work in January, February and March, but then it kind of runs itself.”

Quick Draw

register for the Quick Draw contest at www.lititzartassociation.com or up until 10 a.m. at the event.

“We’re trying to bring people to Lititz for a day out and to enjoy the medium of two-dimensional art,” said Felton. “It’s really the art part of Taste of Lititz. There are other things during Taste of Lititz where people can wander around and try their hands at art. Quick Draw is the professional artists. We’re trying to get onlookers to come out while the artists are painting.”

Nearly 30 artists from Lancaster County and southeastern Pennsylvania are expected to participate in the Quick Draw contest. Typically, contestants employ mediums like oil, acrylics, watercolors, pencil, pen, pastel, ink and charcoal to create two-dimensional representations of architecture, landscape, plants or any subject of their choosing.

The artists are allotted two hours to complete their creations from a blank canvas. Eighty percent of the proceeds from the sale of the artworks goes to the artists, while the other 20% is donated to Venture Lititz.

“You have to think about how you’re going to go from a blank canvas to a finished product in two hours,” said Felton. “I would say most (artists) do it because of their love for the arts. It’s nice to win. If you can enjoy the day, win and sell your painting, you have the trifecta.”

“Some have been professional artists all their lives,” continued Felton. “We have people who have retired and just started painting. We have college students. We have college instructors. We have novices. Some are very talented, and some are beginners. That’s the beauty of this event. It’s not

Veritas Community posts sermon series

The Veritas Community will launch a new sermon series titled “????” on Sunday, June 2. The congregation gathers every Sunday at 10:30 a.m. on the second floor of HUB 450, 450 N. Prince St. Lancaster. The event begins with 15 minutes of fellowship time.

In the Bible’s accounts of Jesus’ three-year earthly ministry, Jesus asked 307 questions, was asked 183, and only directly answered three of the questions he was asked. In preparation for the sermon series, leaders at the Veritas Community polled their congregation to find out what questions attendees wanted to explore.

Romans 3:21-26; ransom atonement theory, Matthew 20:20-28; and moral influence atonement theory, 1 Peter 2:22. The second week will feature the following topics and Scriptures: Christus victor, Colossians 1:13-14 and 2:13-15; satisfaction atonement theory, Hebrews 9:22; and scapegoat atonement theory, Acts 2:22-36.

The Taste of Lititz block party will also feature live music. Typically the event draws more than 3,000 visitors to the downtown business district.

Classical guitar concert planned

Award-winning classical guitarist Andrew Oswinkle will be featured in a 30-minute concert on First Friday, June 7, at 8 p.m. at First Reformed Church, 40 E. Orange St., Lancaster. Doors will open at 7:30 p.m.

The program will include selections from Bach’s Cello Suite No. 1, “Vals” Opus 8 No. 4 by Agustin Barrios, “Asturias” by the Spanish composer Isaac Albeniz, and Oswinkle’s own arrangement of the hymn “Be Thou My Vision.”

Oswinkle was born and raised in Baltimore and received his master’s degree in guitar performance and pedagogy from the Conservatory of the Peabody Institute at Johns Hopkins Univer -

sity. While there, he was selected to represent his studio in Peabody’s Friday Noon concert series and had many masterclasses with renowned guitarists such as Andrew Zohn, Allan Neave, and Sergio Assad. After his first year of study at Peabody, Oswinkle began participating in competitions throughout the region and setting up his own concerts locally. In 2019, he placed third in the Philadelphia Classical Guitar Competition and placed as a semifinalist in his first-ever appearance in the Appalachian GuitarFest Solo Guitar Competition. Since then, he has continued competing, receiving second place at the 2022 Southern Guitar Competition and advancing to the semifinals in many other competitions.

Since graduating, Oswinkle has been a teacher and regular performer in the Baltimore and Washington, D.C., areas. He continues to study with prominent guitarists and attend festivals and competitions. He also brings music into the local community by playing for local events, schools, and nontraditional venues.

“We’ll all be together under one roof to celebrate the Class of 2024,” said Benner of the graduation ceremony. “It’ll be a celebration of all their accomplishments in the presence of family and friends. It’s a joyful time, but all the intent is to honor God.”

The 60 members of LMS’ Class of 2024 are expected to arrive at the Calvin & Janet High Fine Arts Center around 9:30 a.m. on June 1. Thirty minutes later, they will process in front of parents, siblings, schoolmates, teachers, administrators, school board members and alumni to their seats on stage.

After the commencement address, “A Letter to Yourself,” is delivered by Freeman Chakara, clinical neuropsychologist and founder of Providence Behavioral Health, Benner will individu -

ally present diplomas to each member of the Class of 2024.

Following a closing hymn and a parent-led prayer, the newly graduated students will process out, form a circle and throw their caps into the air.

“The band and orchestra will be there playing when our kiddos walk in and walk out,” said Benner. “There’s a lot of singing and worship and music mixed into all of it.”

Following graduation, members of LMS’ Class of 2024 will go on to college, trade schools or the military or directly into the workforce.

“I imagine it’s a mix of emotions, from excitement and nerves to an awareness of what’s ahead,” said Benner of the students’ graduation mindsets. “I hope there’s a sense of gratitude and sharing joy with others. They should feel proud of what they’ve done. There’s excitement in the air, and they can see the support. It takes a village to support these young people, and to see the village come together to celebrate is very meaningful.”

The Class of 2024 is the 82nd group of students that LMS will send out into the world.

“There are a lot of significant events throughout the school year,” said Benner. “For the senior class, this has the potential to be most impactful. During their time at Lancaster Mennonite, I hope they felt loved and cared for. I hope they can share that love and care with others in whatever they do. I hope they take that with them and keep investing in relationships from here on out.”

“We were needing to fill a gap, and we were hearing pickleball all over the place,” said Wagner. “Someone in our office said, ‘Let’s try a pickleball tournament, just because of how popular it is.’ We were like, ‘Let’s give it a try.’ We honestly didn’t know how it was going to go, but it took off. Now we’re hoping to expand it and grow it into the future.”
