There are nicknames and handles and pet names. Bonnie Eberly wears hers like a badge of honor.

Eberly is a lunch lady. Personally, and professionally, she embodies everything that is positive and pure about the scholastic term of endearment.

“I am proud to be a lunch lady,” said Eberly. “I’m proud of what I do because I know there is value

“It’s rewarding working with the students and seeing the kids growing up.”

in what I do. In my mind, the lunch lady is the person in school you can count on, who is loving and compassionate. If you have a problem, you go to the lunch lady.”

At Smoketown Elementary School, Eberly’s official title is child nutrition manager. She’s been a lunch lady for 35 years, ever since her youngest child first went off to school. The first 13 years were dedicated to the Manheim Township School District, and the last 22 years she has spent in the Conestoga Valley School District.

As the head lunch lady at Smoketown Elementary, Eberly oversees a kitchen staff of five.

In addition to preparing and serving breakfast and lunch almost every day, Eberly and her staff order, receive, and store food and adhere to government nutrition guidelines.

They also perform duties that can’t be found in a job description.

“Our duties are pretty much

across the board. We do everything - sweeping, mopping, wiping noses,” said Eberly, a resident of Manheim Township. “Whatever it takes to serve our students, we do it. We really do make a difference in kids’ lives every day. I’ve had children tell me stories of their home life. The lunch ladies are the keepers of secrets.”

is coming to an end. When the school year concludes early in June, she will retire after 35 years of service.

Eberly’s time as a lunch lady

“It’ll be bittersweet,” said Eberly of her retirement. “I’ve done this for a long time. I enjoy the women I work with.

What makes Occupational Development Center of Lancaster’s (ODC) Food Truck Fest so popular?

A. Its festive, family-friendly atmosphere

B. Its wide assortment of delicious dishes

C. Manheim Township and its surrounding communities’ generous nature

D. All of the above

If you guessed D, you’re correct.

Another ODC Food Truck Fest, the sixth, is right around the corner. And there are no reasons to believe that this one will be any less successful than the first five.

I’m looking forward to slowing down. It’s been challenging. It’s been fulfilling. It’s rewarding working with the students and

“I can’t think of anything more fun than eating,” said Ken Mueller, ODC’s public relations and development manager. “(The Food Truck Fest is) just a very exciting time. Once you get there, the vibe is so cool that you’re going to want to hang out. People are coming and checking out foods maybe they never had before. If you come, you’re going to bump into any number of people you know. There’s stuff for the kids to do. We’re bike friendly, we’re pet friendly, we’re family friendly.

Child Evangelism Fellowship of Lancaster County (CEF) is celebrating its 80th year of reaching children with the Good News of Jesus in the local community. Many people are familiar with the after-school Good News Club programs that are held in the public schools, but they may not be aware that CEF also offers summer programs.

Teens and young adults complete a rigorous training program called Christian Youth in Action (CYIA) to serve with the ministry. These young people, along with CEF staff members, devote their summers to sharing the Gospel with children. All workers and hosts of clubs must complete several required background checks to ensure the safety of all children.

This summer, CEF is partnering with four churches that will host vacation Bible school (VBS) with the theme “One Way.” VBS will be held on

Joel Mutschler from the Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs will serve as the keynote speaker. Following the commemoration, a memorial service for Lancaster’s Civil War notables Maj. Gen. John F. and Rear Adm. William Reynolds will be held at the Reynolds family plot.

The SUVCW is a 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to preserving the history and legacy of those who fought and worked to save the Union. Organized in 1881 and chartered by Congress in 1954, the SUVCW is the legal successor to the Grand Army of the Republic. The General George H. Thomas, Camp No. 19, was chartered on Feb. 13, 1889, and there has been an active camp in Lancaster ever since.

Without food, there is no school.

“You can’t teach a hungry child,” said Eberly. “These kids come from all sorts of backgrounds. Good nutrition helps that cognitive development and their ability to learn. The best part of my job is when I see those kids enjoying their meals.”

and a lunch lady, Eberly has always maintained a professional relationship with the students she’s served.

“I hope my relationship with the children has been one of mutual respect,” said Eberly. “We are humans. We’re not trying to get kids through the serving line as fast as we can. As they’re coming through, we talk to them. ‘Hi. How are you doing? Good morning. We’re glad you

are here.’ Our job is to create a loving relationship.”

“Meals are relaxed. Students have an opportunity to converse with their friends,” added Eberly. “It’s a social time. School is hard, and a lot of these kids have challenges. We try to make it a fun time. I try to celebrate everything on the calendar. I run contests throughout the year just to make it a fun atmosphere for them.”

KING’S FARM MARKET

Food trucks from

It’s just a great community event.”

This year’s ODC Food Truck Fest will be held on Saturday, June 1, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Manheim Township’s Stauffer Park, 1241 Lititz Pike, Lancaster. Parking is available on surrounding streets and at Lancaster Catholic High School’s football stadium.

The sponsored event, which is free, will feature 15 food trucks from Lancaster, Columbia, New Holland, Lebanon, York, Red Lion and Mechanicsburg offering exotic cuisine from West Africa, Cambodia, Latin America, the Caribbean and India, as well as traditional favorites like ice cream, pizza and funnel cake. Patrons can vote on their favorite food trucks, and the one that receives the most votes will be recognized.

All proceeds from the Food Truck Fest will go to ODC’s continuing work to provide vocational training and employment opportunities for Lancaster County adults with development disabilities and the Manheim Township Recreation and Park Planning Department.

“Every year we try to make it better than the previous year,” said Mueller. “I want to generate more revenue and make it more exciting. But this is a food truck event. It’s all about the food trucks. The spotlight is on them. We want to have a really nice mix of foods. We don’t want to duplicate the cuisine.”

In addition to games, prizes, T-shirts and a DJ spinning tunes, the ODC Food Truck Fest will also offer a Touch-A-Truck display where kids can play on and have their photos taken with construction vehicles, a fire truck and police cruisers from Manheim Township. The Lancaster County Bookmobile will be on hand conducting hands-on activities.

Some 4,000 people are expected to attend. Mueller is hoping the event raises $12,000.

“We want to help our clients find employment and bring more independence into their lives,” said Mueller. “We really want to make better lives for people with disabilities. We want to get them out into the community, just so they get to know people. It’s about the ability to earn a paycheck. If you can

learn to do a job, find a job and get someone to pay you for it, there’s such a sense of independence and accomplishment. You can’t put a price tag on that.”

Located at 640 Martha Ave., Lancaster, ODC was founded in 1949 and currently serves more than 40 Lancaster County adults with disabilities.
