World Down Syndrome Day doesn’t celebrate our differences. World Down Syndrome Day celebrates why we’re all special.

On March 21, at 2501 Oregon Pike, GiGi’s Playhouse Lancaster added its own special twists to World Down Syndrome Day.

Leo - Leadership, Experience, Opportunity - stands for service. Leo means doing the right thing all the time.

Leo is a lion.

“It’s important to be a part of your community and give back to create change in your community,” said Jarrett Falduts, who’s a Bareville, Leola, Leacock Lion

and the adviser for the recently formed Conestoga Valley Leo Club. “Just being a person who gives. It’s really just God’s work. You have to reach down and help people out. The impact it creates for yourself and others is unlike anything else.”

It’s been a few months since Falduts; his son, Geno, a sophomore at Conestoga Valley (CV) High School; and his daughter,

Sydney, a seventh-grader at CV’s Gerald G. Huesken Middle School, pooled their talents to form the Conestoga Valley Leo Club. The club is sponsored and supported by the Bareville, Leola, Leacock Lions Club, but it is not officially affiliated with the Conestoga Valley School District.

The Conestoga Valley Leo Club conducts meetings online at 6 p.m. on the second Sunday of every

month and engages in community-building altruistic activities, not unlike its parent organization. Included in the monthly meetings are guest speakers, leadership-building exercises and the development and planning of upcoming events.

“For me, as the adviser, I’m giving kids an opportunity to see things they may never have seen before in their lives,” said Jarrett.

“Down syndrome is not a condition,” said Kevin Hewitt, president of GiGi’s Playhouse Lancaster’s seven-person advisory board. “People with Down syndrome aren’t suffering. They’re just different. They might have challenges that other people don’t have. Sometimes they’re challenged physically. They might be challenged in their cognitive abilities.”

“In the past, people with Down syndrome tended to get pushed aside,” continued Hewitt. “General acceptance is what World Down Syndrome Day is all about. (People with Down syndrome) are often misunderstood, and sometimes they’re bullied. Our mission is to change the way the world views Down syndrome.”

Students sought for leadership program

Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful, in partnership with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), is seeking civic and environmental leaders in 10th through 12th grades to keep Pennsylvania clean and beautiful through the Young Ambassadors of Pennsylvania program.

One of the program’s aims is to attract the next generation of leaders to careers in state government. In December, the administration announced substantial increases in the number of Generation Z (Gen Z) and millennial employees who have joined the commonwealth workforce in recent years. This partnership, now in its fourth year, seeks to build on that success.

The Young Ambassadors program empowers young community stewards and civic leaders to become ambassadors in their community for a shared vision of a clean and beautiful Pennsylvania. Ambassadors will have the opportunity to train and network with industry leaders, state agencies, local media, and the Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful network, and they will receive a taste of life in the public service sector.

Students will be chosen through a competitive application process. Applicants should be passionate about the environment and committed to protecting Pennsylvania’s natural beauty and environmental health through volunteerism and leadership.

Chosen candidates will

be asked to commit to serve as Young Ambassadors from September 2025 through May 2026 and represent and uphold the mission and values of Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful.

Other responsibilities will include attending six mandatory virtual education sessions, conducting a community assessment and creating a summary presentation, organizing a community cleanup event through Pick Up Pennsylvania, and conducting one community education event or activity. Non-mandatory education sessions will also be offered on a variety of topics.

Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful will provide education and training to program participants on topics such as the impact of litter on

roadways, litter prevention, waste management and recycling, civic engagement and related public policy, volunteer management, and social media marketing. The program will provide networking opportunities to not only build a sense of community within the program but also to promote professional development of the individual students. In addition, Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful has partnered with industry leaders to provide job shadowing days to select Young Ambassadors.

Applications will be accepted through Tuesday, June 10. Students interested in applying may visit www.keeppabeautiful.org or contact Kylie McCutcheon at 724-836-4121, ext. 114, or kmccutcheon@ keeppabeautiful.org.

SINGING SPRING FOODS

That Friday in late March at the Lancaster location of GiGi’s Playhouse Down Syndrome Achievement Center, World Down Syndrome Day was celebrated from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. and was marked by discovery, fellowship and inclusion. As part of the festivities, a group of GiGi’s Playhouse clients visited Lancaster County Christian School and a group of Lancaster-Lebanon IU13 students and Pennsylvania state Rep. Nikki Rivera visited GiGi’s Playhouse and toured the Manheim Township facilities.

“It was just a festive day, a day of awareness and celebration,” said Hewitt. “The playhouse was decorated with balloons and glitter. Music was playing. Different families were coming in. Grandparents were

joining with families. It was loud, fun and exciting.”

In all, about 150 people visited GiGi’s Playhouse Lancaster on World Down Syndrome Day. The only Down syndrome achievement center in Pennsylvania, GiGi’s Playhouse Lancaster currently serves about 530 families from Lancaster County and beyond.

Operated through the work of one paid staff member and more than 100 volunteers, GiGi’s Playhouse Lancaster offers services like career development, tutoring and therapeutic and educational programs free of charge to participants.

“We have new families coming in all the time, and they’re not sure how they’re going to fit in,” said Hewitt. “It’s encouraging for parents and grandparents to know there’s a place like GiGi’s Playhouse. Some parents just sit and talk about what they’re going through.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one out of 700 babies in the United States is born with Down syndrome. About 6,000 babies are born with Down syndrome in the United States each year.

Down syndrome is named for British physician John Langdon Down, who first described the condition in

1866.

“The general public really doesn’t understand people with Down syndrome,” said Hewitt. “What they’re seeing is someone who looks somewhat different. Our people with Down syndrome are out in the community. They work at all kinds of places. We don’t facilitate them getting jobs, but we prepare them. They’re becoming members of the community. I think there’s some misunderstanding about the capabilities of people with Down syndrome.”

One of 62 GiGi’s Playhouses across the country, the Lancaster location opened in 2020, serving 100 families affected by Down syndrome. Now, GiGi’s Playhouse Lancaster offers 18 programs to families.

GiGi’s Playhouse Lan -

caster, which moved into its current more spacious building in April of 2024, is financed through four major fundraisers throughout the year and some individual donations. The organization is currently exploring the grant application process.

“That growth trend is continuing,” said Hewitt. “Lots of generous people and generous businesses believe in what we do. Every week another new family comes into the playhouse. They see all the programs, and we tell them, ‘We’re here for you.’ We’re always accepting donations, and we always want people to volunteer. We love to give tours of our playhouse. We also love to give presentations to businesses about what we do.”

Historical society sets program

The Historical Society of the Cocalico Valley will present a program, “Vehicle for Growth: The History of the Reading and Columbia Railroad,” on Wednesday, May 28, at 7 p.m. at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 167 E. Main St., Ephrata.

some of its 24 stations. The program is free and open to the public. The parking lot and entrance are accessible via the alley behind the church. For more information, visit www.cocalicovalleyhs.org or call 717-733-1616.

Salon and spa reopens in Leola

Salon & Spa, owner Jennifer Frey had the facility rebuilt, and it has now reopened with a new name - Ember Organic Salon & Spa.

The new salon and spa, located at 119 W. Main St., Leola, is a full-service salon offering hair and nail services, as well as massages, facials, body wraps and scrubs. It also features a sauna, lounge and locker rooms.

Frey reported that a fire broke out in the former salon building early in the morning on Dec. 10, 2024. No one was injured in the blaze, which resulted in the building being a total loss.

As the new building was

being constructed, the salon operated out of a temporary space at 349 W. Main St., Leola.

An open house was held at the new facility on May 10. For more information, including hours of operation, or to book an appointment, visit www.ember organicssalonpa.com.

Kimmich joined in 2024.

The group’s mission is to help purchase high-level prosthetics for people from ages 1 through 18.

“We help cover what insurance does not,” said Matthew, who lives in New Danville. “We help kids get better prosthetics while they’re young instead of after they’re done growing.”

Iron-Leg has generated a total of approximately $60,000 in the first three tournaments. The proceeds from this year’s golf outing will benefit a 7-year-old girl from Massachusetts named Abby. Abby, who will be at the event, was injured in a lawn mowing accident when she was 3.

The cause is especially meaningful for Matthew, whose son, Parker, was born without a right leg. Parker, 12, is doing well and playing baseball this spring.

Matthew decided he wanted to assist families who are in a similar situation, and Sean eagerly agreed to help. Sean, who

resides in Reading, is following his uncle’s lead:

Ken Laukhuff answered a mother’s call for help when her son’s last wish was to talk from one truck to another on a CB radio. That charitable act was the genesis for what is now known as the MakeA-Wish Mother’s Day Convoy.

Kimmich, from Millersville, was friends with Sean and gladly stepped in to help with the Iron-Leg Corp. after her kids graduated from high school.

“I was always involved with booster clubs and love helping kids with sports,” she said. “What (Sean and Matthew) do is really touching. For kids who want to run or play a sport, they need better prosthetics, and it’s sad if a (child) can’t play a sport because their parents can’t afford it. So I decided to join their team.”

Boating safety course rescheduled

The Conewago Rod and Gun Club, 1483 Turnpike Road, Elizabethtown, has rescheduled the Pennsylvania Fish & Boat Commission’s Safe Boating Course previously set for May 4. The free, eight-hour course will now be held on Sunday,

June 8, starting at 8 a.m.

Participants who successfully complete the boating course can apply for a Boating Safety Education Certificate good for a lifetime. This certificate is required to operate a personal watercraft and for persons born

walker Electric, and Dent Techs.

A trademark of Iron-Leg events is a huge American flag. “We’re a lot of fun. Anybody can say that, but we go the extra mile,” Matthew said. Matthew served in the United States Marine Corps Reserve from 1995 to 2001. In 2019, he enlisted in the Air Force National

Guard and continues to serve his country. Sean was in the United States Army from 1993 to 2005.

The trio shows no signs of slowing down. Iron-Leg held its first football game last fall, and another is planned for 2026. The IronLeg dance is also slated to return next year.

“We know this is the rest of our lives,” Matthew said.

Organizations renew partnership

Leaders from Circle Legacy Center and Mennonite Life signed a new memorandum of understanding on April 8 at the Lancaster Longhouse, renewing their commitment to partnership. The signing of the memorandum provided an opportunity for the organizations to reflect on their years of partnership and to look forward to future collaboration.

The event followed an evening gathering at the 1719 Museum where representatives of both organizations exchanged stories, gifts, and words of gratitude and intent.

Circle Legacy Center is a nonprofit dedicated to empowering local Native Americans through education and community representation, honoring both enduring traditions of the past and contemporary cultures.

The 1719 Museumone of Mennonite Life’s museums - offers tours of the Lancaster Longhouse and the 1719 Herr House, exploring the interconnected histories of Lancaster County’s early Susquehannock-Conestoga and related peoples and Swiss-German Mennonites who immigrated in the 18th century.

The organizations have

worked in partnership since 2007. Joint ventures include the annual Maize and Snitz Fest at the 1719 Museum and Lancaster Longhouse and public relations at local indigenous cultural events, such as the Lawilowan American Indian Festival and at Blue Rock Heritage Center events.

The Lancaster Longhouse was an early shared effort, built in 2013 and born from the 2010 Honor and Healing service hosted in Lancaster. The service brought together local religious groups and indigenous communities

to acknowledge historic wrongs committed against native peoples. Circle Legacy Center labored alongside Mennonite Life to create the longhouse as a space for education and cultural connection and exchange.

Some of the gifts shared in the Lancaster Longhouse on April 8 - pots of beebalm - symbolized the intertwined history of the land beneath the structure and its cultural communities.

The native herb has been used by both indigenous and Swiss-German cultures for a variety of culinary and medicinal purposes.

Community hymn sing posted

Mennonite Life will host a community hymn sing at Stumptown Mennonite Church, 2813 Stumptown Road, Bird-in-Hand, on Saturday, May 31, from 7 to 8 p.m. as part of an ongoing commemoration of Anabaptism’s 500th anniversary.

Congregational singing has long been an integral part of Anabaptist worship. The oldest known Anabaptist hymns are recorded in the Ausbund, first published in 1564. The

songs were written by early Anabaptists imprisoned for their faith in Passau, Germany. In the centuries since, the hymn tradition has grown, shaped by migration, new languages, ecumenical influence and mission work.

The hymn sing will feature song leaders from various Mennonite traditions across Lancaster County, including Mennonite Church USA, LMC and Weaverland Conference. A

group of Amish singers will sing the “Lob Lied,” a hymn from the Ausbund and the second song sung at Amish church services.

Group singing will be interspersed with storytelling, exploring shifts in Anabaptist worship throughout the centuries.

The hymn sing is free and open to all. Those planning to attend are encouraged to register and suggest hymns for consideration at www .mennonitelife.org/events.

kids in their grades,” said Jarrett. “They’re athletes. They’re very involved. A lot have part-time jobs. They’re already very busy. But to take something else on means they want to be better people. They’re super kids who will probably go to college and end up making a difference in the world.”

“Being part of the Leo Club reminds me of how lucky I am,” said Jackson Poole, a sophomore at Lampeter-Strasburg High School. “I appreciate what I have and it makes me want to help others.”

Among the events that the Conestoga Valley Leo Club has been involved with since its founding are a banquet celebrating Lions and Leo Club presidents at Yoder’s in New Holland; an Easter egg hunt for Arc of Lancaster clients at Leola Community Park; and a regular Bareville, Leola, Leacock Lions Club induction ceremony.

In addition to helping to build job résumés and providing valuable experience, volunteering can serve as a way for getting kids outside and off screens.

“It’s really up to the kids what they want to do,” said Jarrett. “We want to help out with Lions Club events.

There are a lot of kids who don’t know what Lions Club is about. We just want them to get their hands dirty. We want them to see what Lions do. We want them to learn about things that are already in place in the community.”

“They’re learning how to be leaders in their community,” added Jarrett. “They’re creating a better world for themselves and others.”

There are about six Leo Clubs currently operating throughout Lancaster County, many of which are affiliated with school districts.

“I’ve been a Lion for about 14 years now,” said Jarrett. “Just being part of the camaraderie associated with the Lions Club is awesome. I think helping out in the community is something everybody should be a part of. It’s good for you and other people.”

The Bareville, Leola, Leacock Lions Club meets at 6:15 p.m. on the second and fourth Mondays of every month at the War Memorial Building, 54 W. Main St., Leola.

Rock Ford to host chamber ensemble

Historic Rock Ford will welcome the Ephrata Chamber Ensemble for “Baroque on the Piazza” at the General Edward Hand Mansion on Tuesday, June 3, at 6 p.m. The ensemble will present

Vivaldi’s Double Trumpet Concerto in C Major, as well as works by Handel, Telemann, Corelli, J.S. Bach and more. The Ephrata Chamber Ensemble was started by local harpsichordist Faith

Martin of Ephrata. After studying the harpsichord for several years, Martin realized that she most enjoyed using this instrument in collaboration with other musicians, which led her to organize the Ephrata

Chamber Ensemble. Her sister Mercy on the violin, her brother Clayton on the cello, and several musician friends and vocal soloists will join her to bring this program of live music to Rock Ford. Guests
