Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society (LMHS) will host a local history bike tour on the Warwick Ephrata Rail Trail (WERT) on Saturday, June 5, from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Participants should gather at Ephrata’s trailhead at Fulton Street and Railroad Avenue by 9:15 a.m. In the case of rain, the tour will take place on Sunday, June 6.
Tour leader and LMHS board member John Weber will guide the group from Ephrata to Lititz on the WERT, which follows the abandoned Reading and Columbia railroad constructed in 1863 at the outset of the Civil War. The five-stop bike tour will include the Jacob Huber house, where Moravian leader Count Zinzendorf tried to unite all Pennsylvania Germans through his preaching. Another stop focuses on the Hess Homestead, which dates to 1734. The late Clarke Hess restored this property, and a number of his well-documented and rare material culture artifacts are now part of LMHS’ collections.
There is a fee to participate. Register at http://bit.ly/BikeWERT by Friday, May 28.

The Jacob Huber house, built in 1733 and 1734, will be a stop on the local history bicycle tour.
For the past 11 years, volunteers have organized the Glen Lapp Memorial Volleyball Tournament indoors in January at Lancaster Mennonite School. This year, due to COVID-19, the event is moving outside. The tournament will be held on Saturday, June 12, at 9 a.m. on Lancaster Mennonite School’s soccer fields on Millstream Road, off Lincoln Highway East (Route 30). The rain date is Sunday, June 13.
Past years’ tournaments were limited to 40 teams, and organizers had to turn away teams. This year, there is no maximum number of teams.
The tournament is named after Glen Lapp, a 1987 graduate of Lancaster Mennonite School. He played volleyball at Eastern Mennonite University and coached at Lancaster Mennonite in the ‘90s. In 2010, Lapp and nine others were killed while providing free medical assistance in a remote area of Afghanistan. The volleyball tournament honors Lapp’s life and passion for volleyball. All proceeds benefit the Glen D. Lapp Endowment for Student Aid. Over the last 10 years, over $60,000 has been raised to provide scholarships for immigrant and refugee students.
The tournament will have two divisions, one of which will be more competitive. Games will be played four against four, and each team is guaranteed to play at least eight games. Games are played in a laidback style to reflect Lapp’s personality, and players will call their own fouls.
For more information or to register, visit www.glenlappvolleyball .weebly.com. Participants must register by Saturday, May 22, to receive a T-shirt.
Church Plans Car Show

Main St., Ephrata, will hold a car show on Saturday, May 22, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Free, on-site registration will be available for those who would like to display a car. In addition to cars, the event will include food available for purchase and live music by Easily Amused and others.
