Like most libraries, Lancaster Mennonite’s elementary school library is an inviting place where kids can explore the topics that they are interested in. From the exterior, it might seem that Sarah Fichtner serves as the hostess of the space.
But Fichtner is also a child advocate, a reading proponent and an igniter of imaginations. She has personalized her position as Lancaster Mennonite’s elementary school librarian and firmly placed her own stamp upon it.
“I’ve always had a love of reading,” said Fichtner. “I was always the person with her nose in a book. Maybe I’ve been destined for this. Today’s society has so many distractions of screens. I like to spark the interest in books. Once (students) catch that fire,

it’s fun to see them want to check out the next book in the series.”
Fichtner has been the Lancaster Mennonite elementary school librarian for 15 years. Some of her duties include checking books in and out, teaching reading skills and managing the library’s collection of books.
Fichtner plays a key role in the elementary education process at Lancaster Mennonite, both serving as an educator and providing support for classroom teachers.
“A librarian is an educator who helps students find books to read that they’re interested in,” said Fichtner, a resident of Millersville. “It has to interest them, or it will stay in their backpacks. I teach them basic library skills, the difference between fiction and nonfiction, how to look up a book and what the Dewey Decimal System is. I do consider myself an educator,

Wheels will turn wishes into reality
BY CAT SHANNON
For more than three decades, the Make-A-Wish Mother’s Day Truck Convoy has rolled through the county, lifting spirits and raising funds for local children battling critical illnesses. The 36th annual event will be held on Saturday, May 10. It will kick off at Manheim Pennsylvania Auto Auction, 1190 Lancaster Road, Manheim. While truck parking and driver registration will run from 6 to 10 a.m., the public is invited to a Family Fest
from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. The convoy will depart at 1:30 p.m.
In the past, the convoy has been held on Mother’s Day, but organizers made the decision to move the event to the day before the holiday in the hopes of improving attendance, enhancing volunteer availability and encouraging more participation from drivers and wish families.
“Everything else that folks love about the event remains unchanged,” said Lori Dietrich, Make-A-Wish director of development for Lancaster County.

Casting appreciation for veterans
BY JEFF FALK
When he was 8 years old, Case Baccio had an inspired idea. Then, he brought that idea to life, committed to it and followed through with it.
Now, six years later, Clear Water for Heroes is still going strong.
“I guess my motivation would be something between gratitude and joy,” said Case, an eighth-grade student at Manheim Township Middle School (MTMS). “My goal isn’t to raise a large amount of money. My goal is for everyone to have a blast, for everyone to have a great time. I think part of it is the impact that the first veterans’ event I went to had on me. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to forget it.

but I also support what’s going on in the classroom.”
Fichtner hosts Lancaster Mennonite’s entire elementary school population - 185 prekindergarten to fourth-grade students - in the library, by grade and by class, for 30 minutes once a week. These days, children are beginning to learn how to read in kindergarten or before.
“Something I specifically do is make boxes of themed books available so students can look through the whole box,” said Fichtner. “Kids will often come with specific requests, and they’re all at different levels. (The boxes) can be good starting places for reluctant readers. If a kid comes to the library with a specific idea about a subject and can’t find it, it can be frustrating. They want to find what they’re interested in. My knowledge of our collection allows me to point kids in whatever direction they want to go.”
renewals each month.
“At the elementary level, we try to limit how much students are on screens,” said Fichtner. “We’re emphasizing print at the elementary level. Screens aren’t inherently bad, but there’s just something about holding a book in your hands. When kids see adults reading, it opens kids’ eyes to the possibility for a book and for fun.”
“I like to read at school in my classroom and the library,” said prekindergarten student Gavin Curtis.
Before becoming Lancaster Mennonite elementary school’s part-time librarian in 2010, Fichtner taught fourth- and fifth-grade classes and kindergartners at various times at Lancaster Mennonite between 2003 and 2009. A native of Chester County, she earned a degree in elementary and early childhood education at Millersville University.
“Reading helps kids use their imagination,” she added. “It allows them to explore different topics. It builds confidence so they can possibly expand their experiences.”
“My favorite thing to do at school is reading in the library,” said second-grade student Miriam Charles.
The Lancaster Mennonite elementary school library is an all-print, allbook facility; it does not offer online resources. The library averages a total of about 1,200 check-ins, checkouts and
“I love working for a Christian school and having books in the library that reflect the school’s mission,” said Fichtner. “For me, as the person who is curating our collection, I can get kids to realize books can be fun.”

Guests are welcome to explore the amphitheater, peek inside the set buildings behind the stage, test the acoustics, and pose for photos in the glade. Inside the Visitor Center, displays will trace the evolution of the amphitheater and reflect on the history of the Vorspiel music drama. Located on the grounds of Historic Ephrata Cloister, a National Historic Landmark and Pennsylvania Trails of History site, the amphitheater was originally constructed in 1963 by the Ephrata Cloister Associates, the nonprofit organization that supports the work of the museum. For nearly 30 years, the amphitheater was home to the Vorspiel, a historical drama featuring the 18th-century hymns composed by the Brothers and Sisters of Ephrata and performed by local actors, musicians, and the Ephrata Cloister Chorus. The production ran every summer Saturday until it closed in 1989. In the following years, the space

It’s the reason I started this thing. There are people doing things today because these (veterans) help keep us safe.”
With the assistance of family and friends, Case is staging this year’s Clear Water for Heroes fishing tournament on Saturday, May 3, at J. Edward Mack Scout Reservation, 2 Scout Lane, Newmanstown, in Elizabeth Township. The fundraising event for veterans and veterans’ organizations will be conducted between 8 a.m. and noon, followed by a complimentary lunch.
Participants and supporters can preregister by emailing clearwaterforheroes@ gmail.com or by searching for “6th Annual Clear Water for Heroes” at Eventbrite.com. Same-day registration for the event will begin at 7 a.m.
“I believe anybody can be a hero,” said Case. “The way I look at it, if you do something kind, I would classify you as a hero. It means giving something to benefit others.”

Water for Heroes, and the proceeds will go to benefit local and national veterans’ organizations.
Case has acquired event sponsorships from 15 local and national businesses.
“I try to put as much time and effort into this event as I do with sports,” said Case, who competes in football, wrestling and track and field at MTMS. “We’ve seen it change people’s lives for the better. I’d say (the participants are) family. They’re making that commitment to get up early and help people who have made sacrifices that no one can imagine.”
It was a trip to Ohio for a Warrior Weekend to Remember that provided Case’s initial inspiration for Clear Water for Heroes. Over the first five years, Case’s event has raised more than $50,000 for veterans, their families and veterans’ causes.
“We just want to say thank you,” said Ali Bucher, Case’s mom. “We’ve been around this veteran community, and we want to give back to people who have done so much for this nation. This is such a small thing, but it’s made an impact on a lot of people.”
The Clear Water for Heroes fishing tournament will offer prizes to the top three adult finishers and top three kid finishers determined by the aggregate weight of the three biggest fish caught.
“My favorite part is seeing adults stepping in and helping kids fish,” said Case. “We had one veteran who was helping a group of four or five kids who never fished before. He was there the entire time helping kids, and when they caught one, their faces just lit up.”
“I also love the connections we’ve made,” he added. “We’ve become friends with a whole bunch of people.”
“It’s a family event,” said Bucher. “My favorite part is the people and seeing the smiles on faces. There are people who have followed Case from year one and have come to every event.”
More than 50 fishermen, outdoorsmen and former servicemen from veterans’ groups and VFWs from across Lancaster County are expected to participate. Case is hoping to raise more than $10,000 through Clear
“The amount of support we get is through the roof,” said Case. “We’ve crushed our financial goals the last few years. When I first started, I was shy to go up to people, but the connections we’ve made have gone through the roof. Now I go up to people and say, ‘Thank you for your service,’ and we’ve seen veterans cry.”
“He is just a kind soul who wants to give back to people,” said Bucher of her son. “He is just an incredible human being. ... He does this because he cares. He’s motivated. It’s all him. He does it all. We need more human beings like him.”

hosted weddings and community events until it fell into disrepair and was completely closed in 2020.
In 2021, the Ephrata Cloister Associates launched a revitalization project, funded through private donations and local grants. Excavation began in August 2024, and major construction wrapped up in early winter.
The updated venue now features four terraces, including two paved levels for improved accessibility to the stage and seating areas. The amphitheater accommodates approximately 250 guests, with options to sit on stone walls, benches, or chairs and blankets.
While the core of the project is complete, minor renovations to the set buildings and surrounding landscaping will continue into the summer.
Donations are still being accepted. Gifts of set minimum amounts will be recognized in the Donor Book of Honor or on the Donor Wall of Honor located on the stage set buildings. During the open house, a draft of the Donor Book of Honor and a preliminary design of the Donor Wall of Honor will be on display in the Visitor Center.

Dance company to present “Lovebug”
FRWRD Dance Company will return to the stage this spring with its latest version of “Lovebug,” complete with a swarm of fresh bugs, poetry and a cast of new faces and familiar favorites.
Featuring a blend of dance and theater showcasing an array of costumes
and props, “Lovebug” transports viewers into the world of insects. FRWRD’s performers will spin, weave, creep, fly and hatch, bringing a cast of creatures to life from the web of the bella tarantella to the bustling beehive to the fields of singing cicadas, which are new to the show this year. The show’s
runtime is just over 60 minutes, and it is appropriate for children and adults alike.
Ahead of the main performance at Mickey’s Black Box, FRWRD will host an outreach appearance, where families can mingle with the bugs, enjoy excerpts from the show and flutter their insect wings in interactive workshops led by the cast of the show. The sneak preview and family workshop will take place on Saturday, May 3, at noon at The North Museum, 400 College Ave., Lan-
“We are also still in need of volunteers to assist with the day’s event, including truck parking, working the carnival games, helping at driver registration and more,” Dietrich commented. “It takes nearly 200 volunteers to have a safe and successful truck convoy for all to enjoy.” To learn more about the convoy, visit www.wish convoy.org.
