LMHS To Present “All The World’s A Stage” BY ANN MEAD ASH
ccording to Chloe Elie, a member of the cast of the upcoming Lancaster Mennonite High School (LMHS) theater production, before choosing the spring show, director Dean Sauder bounced some ideas off his drama class students. Elie noted that when the winter musical show had to be canceled, Sauder wanted to choose a spring show that would showcase students’ individual talents. “(Sauder) took a script that was a lot of acting and added singing and dancing,” said Elie. “Everyone gets to shine in their own way (in this show).” “All the World’s a Stage,” a series of six folk tales from Italy, India, Spain, West Africa, Ireland, and Arabia, will be presented in the patio area of Millstream Hall with the audience in the parking lot between Millstream and the Rutt building on the school campus, 2176 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster. Shows will be staged on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, April 29, 30, and May 1, at 7 p.m. and on Sunday, May 2, at 3 p.m. Attendees
A
should bring lawn chairs and blankets, and they are welcome to bring picnic lunches to create their own dinner theater experience. To enhance the cultural experience, traditional songs and dances from around the world will be presented between the skits. Cast member Isaac Kraenbring reported that some students will be playing as many as six different characters, since each folktale is its own complete story. He described his part in one tale, noting that Sauder has encouraged students to develop each character they play as a distinct entity. “In the Irish folktale, I am the Great Bear of Orange,” he said, adding that the story is similar to that of “Beauty and the Beast.” “(Instead of objects), the people are transformed to animals, but when a princess loves the bear, he becomes a prince,” explained Kraenbring. Cast member Megan Esch said she enjoys the challenge of playing different characters. “Each skit has a different atmosphere,” she explained, adding that the first one will have a cartoonish feel. In December 2019, Lighthouse Vocational Services (LVS) began offering a program called Strengthening Pathways. The program provides a variety of activities that are based on interests of LVS participants. Among the many activities is an art program that includes art lessons in painting and other crafts. Individuals taking part have produced watercolor greeting cards, painted canvases, decorated glassware, candles, and more.
In the spring of 2020, when many events had to be canceled due to COVID-19 restrictions, the first Clear Water for Heroes Fishing Tournament to benefit Blue Skies for the Good Guys and Girls, an outdoor event, was held at the J. Edward Mack Scout Reservation (Camp Mack), 2 Scout Lane, Newmanstown.

Zooks Homemade Chicken Pies Celebrates Grand Opening! Zook’s Homemade Chicken Pies was founded by Amos and Rachel Zook back in 2001. They sold the business to Lee & Rose Anna King (daughter and son-in-law) in 2007 and it has now moved from Harvest Drive to a new location at 3427 Lincoln Hwy East, Paradise, PA 17562. This building had been known as the National Christmas Center for the last 20 years and originally was a restaurant known as The Dutch Town & Country Inn. Today the renovated building offers ample and much needed space to enable Zook’s Homemade Chicken Pies to keep up with production of their delicious pies that make a great home cooked meal that anyone can appreciate. On April 15, 16 & 17 the public is invited to a Grand Opening celebration of Dutch Town & Country Market, the retail side of Zook’s Homemade Chicken Pies, where you will find not only Zook’s Pies but also Local milk, ice cream, jarred goods, bakery items and other specialty foods. There will be the opportunity to register to win prizes and product samples to taste and enjoy. The retail store hours are 8 am to 5 pm weekdays and Saturdays 8 am to 4 pm.

Student Sofia Masciale-Walmer noted that among the songs would be those originating in West Africa, Ireland, and Spain, along with a selection of lullabies. Katie Sina, who serves as choreographer for the production, said that basic costumes with accent pieces will designate different characters. “Another way we are making it fun is by adding pop culture anachronisms (to the timeless tales),” noted cast member Josiah Esch. Masciale-Walmer shared that the biggest challenge is the uncertainty that has surrounded COVID-19 cases and resulting restrictions, but she noted that students are facing the situation with a flexible attitude. “If something happens, we will try to make a way around it,” she said. “But we are putting a ton of hard work in, and if it doesn’t happen, we have to (be prepared) deal with it.” While there is no cost to attend one of the shows, tickets are required. There will be opportunities to donate to the Lancaster Mennonite drama group. Tickets may be reserved by emailing boxoffice@lancaster mennonite.org, calling the box office at 717-740-2456, or visiting www .lancastermennonite.org.

The fundraiser, the brainchild of Cub Scout Case Baccio, was organized to help send veterans, Purple Heart Warriors, and families of fallen heroes to the 2020 Warrior Weekend held in July. “(The tournament) went really well,” said Case, a member of Cub Scout Pack 93, who is now a fourth-grader at Bucher Elementary School. “We were able to raise more than $4,000, and there were quite a few people there.” Buoyed by the success of the 2020 event, Case, along with his mother, Ali Bucher, and friend Eric McCullough, are organizing this year’s event, to be held at Camp Mack on Sunday, May 16, rain or shine. Area residents who enjoy fishing are invited to take part in the event. The adult open and hero tournament, for those age 16 and older, will be held from 7 to 11 a.m. The adult hero category will include participants who are Purple Heart recipients or Gold Star family members. Lunch will be provided from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The children’s open and hero tournament will be held from 1 to
The creativity of the Lighthouse participants inspired LVS staff members to schedule a maker’s market to be held in the LVS parking lot, 144 Orlan Road, New Holland, on Saturday, April 24, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The market will feature items made by Pathways program participants, along with the work of 20 vendors selling jewelry, watercolor paintings, and build-your-own terrarium kits, among other items. Four food trucks will be on-site to offer food for purchase to hungry attendees. In addition to the many handmade items that will be for sale, LVS is introducing its cookbook, which will be sold at a discount online prior to the event. “It will be available for presale (Sunday), April 18, through (Friday, April) 23, online,” explained LVS events coordinator Katie Martin, who added that preordered copies may be picked up at the market, and regularly priced books may be purchased there as well. Cookbooks and other LVS items may be purchased online at www.lighthousevoc.org/shop. Those who would like to help LVS purchase art supplies for the market may visit https://a.co/0zyeUUS. Many of the LVS programs shut down in March 2020 due to COVID-19 restrictions. For participants who work in the community under the Employment Services program, there was no break. Community Participation Services, which includes outings with staff members and volunteer work, is now up and running, and the Pathways program is partially open with both in-person and virtual activities. LVS program specialist Jen Swanson reported that Pathways online classes were back on track within two weeks of the shutdown. “We started on a small scale,” said Swanson, who noted that now more than 25 classes are offered. Swanson shared that more than 25 participants are now taking
3 p.m. Child hero category members will include children of Purple Heart recipients or members of Gold Star families. This year, only 30 adult and 30 child participants will be registered. The 2020 tournaments attracted 45 participants. Winners were named in categories including biggest fish and largest number of fish caught. Bucher noted that one participant caught a large catfish, but McCullough added that the largest fish caught that day was a bass. According to Bucher, two goals of this year’s tournament are to attract more veterans and to double the amount that was raised last year. “We want to promote the community getting together for this,” she said. “We’d like to see some new people.” Individuals who are interested in registering for the event may visit www.eventbrite.com and search for “2nd Annual Clear Water for Heroes Fishing Tournament benefiting BS3G.” Readers who have questions may call 717224-5923 or 910-964-8594.

When Tracy Wagner, director of the Lancaster Catholic High School (LCHS) musical, looked into securing the rights for a spring show that the school would be able to stream, she did not know that her choice of Disney’s “The Little Mermaid” would be met with intense student enthusiasm. “This group was jumping out of their skin with excitement,” recalled Wagner, who added that the students know the characters and the melodies and wanted to work on learning the show as soon as the books arrived. “‘The Little Mermaid’ is the story of Ariel, played by Sheridan Riva, a mermaid princess with a beautiful singing voice, who lives in an undersea kingdom. Ariel should be content, but she desires the one thing she cannot have: life on land. When Ariel recues a human prince named Eric, played by Henry Greiner, from a storm at sea and falls in love with him, she is even more determined to realize her dream. She defies her father, King Triton, played by Zac Snyder, and bargains with sea witch Ursula, played by Kati Lyle, who demands Ariel’s voice in exchange for entry into Prince Eric’s world. With help from Flounder, played by Oliver Hughes; Scuttle, played by Caroline Erb; and Sebastian, played by Isabelle

The show will be presented at the school to a limited audience by invitation. The stream will be available from Sunday, April 18, through Sunday, May 2, at 7 p.m. each evening. Tickets to watch the streamed show may be purchased through the Fine and Performing Arts link under Student Life at www.lchsyes.org or by searching for “Lancaster Catholic High School” at www.showtix4u.com. A discount is available for family ticket purchase. “The Little Mermaid” is known for big musical numbers such as “Under the Sea” and “Kiss the Girl,” but also for “Positoovity,” which will feature tap dancing seagulls, led by experi-

enced tap dancer Erb as Scuttle. Wagner has been directing rehearsals for the 46 students in the cast, crew, and orchestra. She noted that the students’ masks make it harder for her to judge the work of the ensemble, but she praised the singers in the lead roles and noted that many members of the small orchestra will need to play more than one instru-
ment during the performance. Wagner noted that creating convincing underwater scenes through choreography, staging, lighting, and costumes is also a challenge. During a year of uncertainty, Wagner said she is happy to offer students roles playing the iconic Disney characters. “They needed something they love and can grab on to,” she said.

wife, Angela, and their family, of New Holland, decided to host their own fundraiser dinner in Pennsylvania. Trish was raised in the larger Holmes County area of Ohio and met Lenord Bonnegre in Haiti over 21 years ago. They married in 2010. Together they launched Restoring Lives Ministry to serve the Haitian people through church activities, pastoral training, and providing education to youths and children. The ministry’s goal is to bring freedom, deliverance, and hope to the people of Haiti. Lenord felt he was being called to ministry in his late teens. Although
the call to the ministry was clear, he was unsure how he should go about following it. Eventually, he began exploring how he could serve people in the United States and use these efforts as an avenue to raise funds to help his own people in the village of Passé boi d’ormes (pronounced “paws-bwadom”) in Haiti. Most of the food for the upcoming fundraiser will be prepared in the same style that Lenord grew up with. Donations will be accepted to benefit the ministry. For more information, contact Angela Peachey Bonnegre at 717330-6219.

the hurdle events, they filled the top three places with Jessica Koenig taking second in the high hurdles and Grace Lapp’s second in 300 hurdles. Teagan Schaub earned third place finishes in both hurdle events. The boys were also dealt a loss from the Warriors (81-69), but no one could deny CV’s dominance in the sprinting events, featuring a pair of first place finishes from Owen Linder in the 100 (11.3) and 200 (23.3). Teammate Josh Rennekamp kept the winning streak alive with his firstplace time of 53.5 in the 400. Linder and Rennekamp also ran a
leg of CV’s 4x400 relay win, joined by Kyle Thrush and Emmanuel Gitonga. Tarius Jackson pulled in additional points in the jumping events securing a pair of first place performances with a 20-3 long jump and a 39-0 triple jump. BASEBALL CV baseball gave up their first loss on Wednesday the 7th when Solanco got the best of them in an 11-4 showdown. Solanco got ahead early, and held a 4-0 lead after three innings, but CV rallied and almost managed to level the scoreboard before the Mules pulled
away in the seventh. Logan Kline produced a two RBI double in the bottom of the sixth, scoring Ethan Weaver and Josh Pattison, to bring the Bucks within one run, 5-4, but the Mules initiated a pitching change that led to the final two Buckskin outs, squelching the comeback. Weaver and Darren Burkholder each collected two hits to lead the Bucks at the plate, and Kline and Gavin Fisher had one apiece. Sam Thompson threw six innings, taking the loss while allowing eight hits and six runs. He struck out five Solanco batters.
