EPC Golf Outing will benefit Good Samaritan Services

Like golfers who win the Masters Tournament and the green jackets tailored for them, Good Samaritan Services (Good Sam) and Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC) are ideally suited for one another.

The two community-minded organizations are once again linking up for the 18th annual EPC Golf Outing benefiting

Good Samaritan Services.

The charity event will be held Friday, June 6, at Crossgates Golf Club, 1 Crossland Pass, Millersville.

There will be two sessions of golf.

The first will tee off at 7:30 a.m., and the second will start at 1:30 p.m. A light breakfast and a chicken barbecue lunch will be served to the morning groups; the afternoon groups will receive a light café lunch and a chicken barbecue meal for dinner. The

deadline to register is Friday, May 23. Go to https://epcgolf outing.com for more information and to register.

Individuals or businesses that wish to sponsor the event or provide prizes can visit the aforementioned website or email EPC marketing and communications director Dan Silva at marketing@ engleonline.com.

“We want to be involved with the communities we serve,” said

Gala to bring Hope Inspire Love’s work out of darkness and into light

Hope Inspire Love takes both a realistic and an optimistic approach to its work. The human trafficking-fighting local nonprofit also takes its fun seriously.

Hope Inspire Love’s upcoming event is a mixture of style and substance, of business and play and of joy and caution.

“When people dress in formal attire, they feel elegant,” said Amy Thurston, Hope Inspire

kids

At the heart of the matter, it’s children helping children. Bethany Christian Services (BCS) simply serves as the mediator, the facilitator.

Appropriately enough, the organization’s upcoming event is being called Walk in Love.

“Kids are the motivation for what we do,” said Elaine Shenk, who’s been BCS’ director of family strengthening and empowerment for five years.

“We want to protect children

in our community. Everything we do at Bethany Christian Services revolves around children and family. We want families to come out, have fun and enjoy spending time together, being together as a family.”

Bethany Christian Services of Central Pennsylvania is conducting its inaugural Walk in Love, a children’s walk/run and family festival, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 17, at Lancaster Bible College (LBC), 901 Eden Road, Lancaster. The event is designed to raise funds

Love’s CEO and co-founder. “They’re meeting people who have similar beliefs. They’re excited. They feel beautiful. But they’re seeing that their support has purpose; it’s supporting the work we do. It’s a night of beauty while also bringing hope. They’ll be hearing hard stories, but the beauty outweighs them.”

Hope Inspire Love’s third annual gala and awards ceremony - the organization’s largest fundraiserwill be conducted on Friday, April 11, at Eden Resort, 222 Eden Road, Lancaster. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m., and the festivities will begin with a silent auction and an hors d’oeuvres hour.

A keynote speaker who has been directly affected by human

trafficking will deliver an address to the gathering, and a full-course dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m. Liz Ackerman, executive director of the Northern Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce, will serve as the master of ceremonies for the event, which will also feature music and an interactive live art experience.

The deadline for purchasing tickets at www.hopeinspirelove.org is Thursday, April 10.

“It’s an evening for people to celebrate the work that Hope Inspire Love does,” said Thurston. “People get a chance to learn about our existing programs. The gala is an opportunity to come out, become more aware and understand how they can become involved.”

Organizers of Hope Inspire Love are hoping to make $100,000 through the fundraiser, about $15,000 more than it raised last year.

“We want to be able to expand our restorative services,” said Thurston. “We want to be able to meet people’s needs. We don’t want to have to say to people, ‘We can’t serve you.’ We want to be able to say yes. We want to make sure it’s a long-term, not a short-term, fix.”

As many as 250 church members, community members, business leaders, government officials and individuals who have been directly and indirectly affected by human trafficking are expected to attend.

business donations, church charity and grants.

“To me, it’s about fostering healthy relationships and growing,” said Thurston. “It’s important for businesses to know who we are. We’re trying to help people navigate healthy relationships. We’re trying to meet people where they are and walk with them on their journeys.”

Located at 1380 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster, Hope Inspire Love was founded in 2017 when Thurston’s husband, Steve, witnessed an incident of human trafficking. Today, Hope Inspire Love is operated by a staff of six employees and supported by over 100 volunteers.

CIRCULATION/DISTRIBUTION:

“I love people, and I love relationships,” said Thurston. “I love seeing people connecting around their tables. What gets me choked up is how many people come out. I love seeing people who support the why.”

Hope Inspire Love also conducts a Freedom Walk to help raise funds and awareness about human trafficking, in addition to other smaller fundraising events throughout the year. Hope Inspire Love’s mission is also funded through private and

“We’ve been able to expand our services beyond Lancaster County,” said Thurston. “We’ve been able to expand our team. We’ve been able to do more prevention education. We’ve been able to match survivors with mentors. That’s why we get to celebrate.”

“We love to be able to tell the survivors that the community did this,” added Thurston. “This isn’t about Hope Inspire Love; it’s about all of us working together. It takes all of us. We all have a part to play.”

Jocelyn Engle, who is EPC’s publisher. “We know that some people just need an extra boost in times of need, and this was a perfect fit for us.”

Rachel Shelley, the director of marketing for Good Samaritan Services, agrees. “We love our partnership with EPC,” said Shelley. “Obviously, the funding that comes from the golf outing is helpful in supporting our mission (and) funding the work that we do in the community. Also, EPC is obviously so well-connected, and this is a great awareness-building event for us, too.”

Good Sam has locations across Lancaster and Chester counties and every day serves about 300 people who are in crisis. “Our mission is to respond with compassion to individuals and families who are experiencing homelessness or are at risk of homelessness,” Shelley said.

Anyone who needs assistance from Good Samaritan Services can go to https://goodsamservices.org.

A Good Sam representative will conduct a screening via a phone call to determine if the organization can help.

EPC is carrying on a family tradition started by company founder Alvin Engle, who was Jocelyn’s grandfather. Alvin was involved

with numerous philanthropic endeavors and set the tone for the company going forward, Jocelyn said.

Since its inception, the golf outing has generated nearly $300,000 for neighbors in need.

“We want to make the experience memorable for golfers and also make sure community members are aware of what Good Sam does,” Jocelyn said. “We want to (send the message) that everyone is included. We want to make sure (the golf outing is) affordable for everybody to take part. … I think what’s so neat about our event is we’ve had so many returning sponsors and golfers because it is something people look forward to every year.”

Many of Good Sam’s 30 staff members will volunteer at the golf event. “Our staff loves coming to the golf outing,” Shelley said. “It’s such a cool day for our staff. A lot of them are working directly with the people we serve every day providing case management, and it’s a heavy job. It’s important, important work. It’s really important for our staff to come on the day of the golf outing and see the community support for the work that they’re doing.”

Good Samaritan Services executive director Nate Hoffer will

attend the outing. “His true passion for what he and his team members do has been fun for us to watch as an organization, because we know everyone is being taken care of by Good Sam,” said Jocelyn.

Only 3% of Good Samaritan Services’ budget is funded by the government. “People have been generous and kind in supporting and believing in the work we do,” said Shelley.

Good Sam will be expanding its impact with two homes in Phoenixville. It will be the first time Good Sam will offer housing for women in Phoenixville. The homes will continue to provide safe housing for women facing homelessness, with the added resources of Good Sam.

Shelley stated Good Sam takes an individualized approach to caring for clients. “Everyone in crisis has their own individual story,” she said. “They are on a unique path on how they are going to reach stability.”

Clients meet one-on-one with a resource coordinator, who provides case management with “bite-size goals” for them to work on, Shelley said. She added Good Sam team members “take this large problem of crisis and break it into sizable goals while walking alongside them in that journey and equip -

Courtney and her 3-yearold daughter, Cherish, are among the families being assisted by Good Samaritan Services.

ping them with tools.”

There are no quick fixes. The goal is to remove any barriers that might be in the way of clients achieving long-term housing stability.

Courtney and her 3-year-old daughter, Cherish, were the first family to move into Good Samaritan Services’ Lancaster city residence for women and children, which opened last year.

“Good Sam Services has gone out of their way to make sure I have everything I need and more,” Courtney said. “The opportunities I’ve received are truly a blessing. They helped keep me going when I could have quit, and I’m so grateful for their support. For the first time in a long time, I feel like I can breathe.”

and awareness for families in central Pennsylvania dealing with poverty, homelessness and health issues.

In addition to the children’s 1-mile walk/run and a toddler toddle, Walk in Love will feature food trucks, carnival-style games, a vendors’ market and resource tables.

“We’re hoping it’s going to be very celebratory,” said Shenk. “People are worth celebrating, and I get excited to see people lean on each other and cheering each other on. I’m picturing joy and lots of smiles. I think it’s going to be a fun celebration.”

Central Pennsylvania children and youths ages 5 to 18 are eligible to participate in the 1-mile walk/ run, and they are asked to obtain financial sponsorships from family members and friends. A 1-mile course will be created around the parking lot of LBC’s Horst Athletic Center.

Prizes will be awarded by age categories.

To register for Walk in Love, go to www.bethany.org/centralpa/walk or call 717-598-9971. The deadline to register is Friday, May 2, but late registrations will be accepted.

“I’m looking forward to meeting new people, seeing old friends and seeing it all come together,” said Shenk. “I just picture a mighty, wonderful moment of energy. We’re hoping to make it an annual event. We would love to continue to grow this event as a hallmark event for Bethany Christian Services. We really want it to be a family-centered event.”

“(The idea for Walk in Love) came from a big brainstorming time,” Shenk continued. “That’s what we really want to do as Christians, walk in love, love our neighbors as ourselves and God. It just got a lot of support as we talked about it. People should always come first, and they should take care of each other. We say, ‘Who is my neighbor?’ We all belong to each other.”

hoping to raise $15,000. The funds will go toward sustainability of BCS programs like Safe Families for Children.

“(Safe Families for Children is) an amazing ministry started in 2003 for children all over the United States and here in Lancaster, Dauphin and York counties,” said Shenk. “It’s not foster care. It’s not changing custody. It’s providing parents support until they get back on their feet. So many families are facing really tough things. It’s a ministry, and churches get host families together. It’s not really our staff doing it.”

Headquartered in Grand Rapids, Mich., BCS was established in Lancaster in 1984. Since then, BCS has opened additional central Pennsylvania branch offices in Harrisburg, York, State College, Reading and Mohnton.

BCS, which provides adoption, foster care, counseling services, pregnancy support and family strengthening programs, employs 12 workers at its Lancaster office at 1681 Crown Ave., Suite 201, Lancaster. BCS is funded through government grants, private donors and fundraisers.

“Our mission is to extend the love and compassion of Jesus Christ by protecting children, empowering youth and strengthening families through quality social services,” said Shenk. “We’re very pro-people. We want to make a difference by walking through life with people.”
