agic is mysterious. Magic is entertaining. Magic is illusion.

But do you know what else magic is? It’s a great way to raise funds.

The upcoming Pennsylvania Entertainers’ Swap Meet & Sale is truly a magical event. It’s the brainchild of organizer Tait Harbaugh - known in the magic realm as Papa Tater - and it serves as a creative way to raise monies for the nonprofit Steps to Success, which his wife, Michelle, operates.

makes someone’s eyes grow wide, you’ve done your job. When you make people forget about life for a moment, that’s magic. I have tricks to create amazement and wonder. But for me personally, I want to make people laugh.”

“Magic is so much more than a trick. It’s theater. It’s public presentation.”

“Magic is creating wonder, amazement,” said Harbaugh. “What you do beyond that is who you are as an entertainer. If it

The 10th edition of the Pennsylvania Entertainers’ Swap Meet & Sale, billed as a micro magic convention, will be presented on Saturday, April 13, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Zion Church, 18 Quarry Road, Leola. About 40 magicians from Lancaster County and beyond will be there plying their trade, selling and trading their wares and captivating curious onlookers.

The event is free, and everyone is welcome. Concessions will be available, and all proceeds from

their sale will benefit Steps to Success, which has served the

community for 30 years through early child care and education.

Hertzog wants to win for all the right reasons

Yeah, it’s a competition, not a pageant. And sure, she’d really like to win it.

But the most important thing is the platform, because that’s what allows for a greater sharing of the message.

Lancaster Township resident Kristen Hertzog will participate in the upcoming Mrs. Pennsylvania America competition. She’s using it as a way to promote her work for

the education and gainful employment of underserved individuals, both here and abroad.

“I would like to win because then I get to expand my reach, my platform for bringing about greater access to education and employment to the underserved and the underempowered,” said Hertzog, who’s currently the reigning Mrs. Lancaster, Pennsylvania. “For 30 years, my heart has been with the people of Haiti, the poorest country in

Raiders of the Golden Osprey Adventure is waiting to be discovered

It’s good, clean family fun. It’s problem solving. It’s a local expedition.

It’s one of the most creative fundraisers you’ll ever run across.

Adam Zurn calls it Raiders of the Golden Osprey Adventure. It’s his vision, his brainchild.

“It’s a little bit like ‘National Treasure’ meets Lancaster and Lebanon counties,” said Zurn.

“I’m a child of the ‘80s and I grew up on films. I thought it would be cool to go on an adventure.

“I want people to come out and have a good time and explore magic,” said Harbaugh. “The goal is to support Steps to Success. Michelle saw this need in the community and put together four after-school programs in Conestoga Valley. Steps has grown immensely since COVID, and every time (it has), it’s been to help someone out. She tries to look out for the community. I really care about Steps, and I really care about the magic community.”

Steps to Success is hoping to raise $700 through the event. In addition to the concessions, the nonprofit will accept direct donations and participating magicians donate a nominal fee to operate their table stations.

Last year, 200 magic enthusiasts attended.

“I’m a very late bloomer, and I was in my 30s when I started getting into magic,” said Harbaugh. “At one point Michelle said, ‘Hey, that’s something you could do for the kids.’ The little lovelies loved it so much that I brought more. I realized I love making people laugh. That’s when I got serious about magic.”

Those who attend the Pennsylvania Entertainers’ Swap Meet & Sale can expect to be treated to card tricks, puppets, clowns, face painting, vintage and rare magic, sleight of hand, the unexplained, and maybe even a bed of nails.

“It’s a room full of magic. It’s a room full of

magicians,” said Harbaugh. “There’s definitely excitement in the air. If you ask the magicians to see a trick, they’re off. They love to perform. We really like seeing young people have an interest. Magic is so much more than a trick. It’s theater. It’s public presentation.”

For Harbaugh, magic has sort of become an accelerant for his journey’s second act.

“I’m a comedy magician,” said Harbaugh. “I’m trying to get into comedy. I’m trying stand-up. All of my shows end up being comedy shows. I just love laughter.”

the Western Hemisphere. It’s a place of desperate and dire need.”

“But as Mrs. Pennsylvania, my focus would have to be on the local community as well, working with local organizations who are focused on gainful employment,” added Hertzog.

“There are so many folks who are doing these amazing things here in Lancaster County.”

A contest for married women who want to make greater impacts on their communities, the Mrs. Pennsylvania America competition will be conducted on Sunday, April 14, at 2 p.m. at Mickey’s Black Box Theatre, 101 Rock Lititz Blvd., Lititz. Hertzog is one of 10 women representing cities across the state and vying for the title.

“It’s very focused on community development, as well as professional development,” said Hertzog of the competition. “I would say that I’m very competitive as a businesswoman. I’m very involved in making a difference in the lives of others. It’s more like I’m willing to do the hard work. When you build five libraries in Haiti, you’ve got to have tenacity.”

The crowning of Mrs. Pennsylvania America is based on the competitors’ performance in three different disciplines: an interview focusing on the contestants’ personal and professional lives; grace and poise; and overall fitness, how each individual takes care of herself physically and mentally.

Fire company sets barbecue, camp

Lafayette Fire Company, 63 Lafayette Way, Lancaster, will host a drive-through barbecue on Saturday, April 13, from 11 a.m. until sold out. To preorder, visit www .lafayettefire.com.

Cadet Camp will take place on Friday, Aug. 2, from 4:30 to 9:30 p.m. at the Lancaster County Public Safety Training Center, 101 Champ Blvd., Manheim, and Saturday, Aug. 3, from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Lafayette Fire Company. To learn more, visit www .joinlafeyette.com. Donations to the fire company are accepted.

“We all have a purpose, and some of our purposes have a lightning bolt in them,” said Hertzog.

“Sometimes we can overlook the message of the vision. It’s important to me that people understand that we can all make a difference. Are we living for ourselves or are we living for other people?”

Hertzog’s life has been a journey, one filled with the typical challenges and rewards, the requisite number of ups and downs. But her life’s course was changed as a teenager, when she was struck by that proverbial lightning bolt during her first excursion to Haiti.

“When I was 16, I went on a church mission trip to Haiti,” said Hertzog. “I was with a group of Americans walking from point A to point B. A Haitian woman came up to me and handed me a filthy, crumpled-up towel. When I opened it up, inside was a beautiful little Haitian girl. I started

screaming.”

“Later, we found the lady and she said, ‘I thought you could give my baby a better life in America,’” continued Hertzog. “It was a very transformative moment. There was something very meaningful about it for me, and it never left. I think if that hadn’t happened my life would’ve had a totally different trajectory.”

Treasure hunt from pg 1

As I got older, I realized I couldn’t go on adventures anymore. But I get just as much enjoyment from people going on my adventure, from playing my game.”

In association with the local history organization Uncharted Lancaster, Raiders of the Golden Osprey Adventure is a real-life treasure hunt.

After each group purchases a treasure diary, registered teams of three to six players decipher five weekly challenges and riddles that provide clues for unlocking segments of the treasure’s GPS coordinates. It’s a contest that challenges participants’ knowledge of local history, their physical abilities to navigate different terrain and their problem-solving skills.

Each week the clues will be hidden in different parts of Lancaster and Lebanon counties. Prizes will be awarded to the top four teams.

“It’s the only one I know of in Lancaster County,” said Zurn. “I’ve seen little afternoon treasure hunts here and there. But no one is doing a cash prize of this size. All expenses are being paid by generous sponsors, and all sales of the treasure diaries go to nonprofits.”

The initial treasure clues for Raiders of the Golden Osprey Adventure will be released on Saturday, April 6, and teams are required to register before then. The clues will be released on each subsequent Saturday leading up to a climactic final race to the treasure on Saturday, May 4.

good. It gives the family something to do. They just have a lot of fun doing it. For a little money, it’s five weeks of good times. It’s a great chance to do something together and make a good memory. I think everyone walks away a winner.”

Zurn is hoping that 300 teams will accept the challenge presented by Raiders of the Golden Osprey Adventure, a total that would raise almost $6,000 for the Historic Preservation Trust of Lancaster County and LancasterHistory.

“The team that won last year was a three-generation family,” said Zurn. “Others are just friends, sometimes they’re groups from work, some are families. It’s a smattering of people. We’ve even had some people from out of state playing.

Typically, the teams that do the best are made up of three to six people who are good at brainstorming and spitballing ideas.”

Raiders of the Golden Osprey Adventure marks Zurn’s fourth treasure hunt. It was preceded by last year’s Jewel of the Susquehanna and Find My Easter Egg in 2022.

“Each year has a theme,” said Zurn. “I like to highlight fascinating local history. It started during COVID when there was nothing to do, and it kind of just keeps growing, becoming a little better, a little more complex.”

To register for Raiders of the Golden Osprey Adventure or to purchase a treasure diary, go to www .hptrust.org/product/2024 -uncharted-lancaster-trea sure-hunt-ticket/.

“It’s a great opportunity for everyone playing to give back to nonprofits,” said Zurn, a resident of Colemanville. “It makes me feel

Book signing planned at Fairmount

Tim Rogers and Megan Shertzer, father and daughter co-authors of the book “Beechdale Road,” will share their story on Wednesday, April 10, at 6:30 p.m. at Fairmount Homes in Ephrata. The event will be held in the Farm Crest Community Room Chapel at 1100 Farm Crest Drive on the east side of the Fairmount campus. Copies of “Beechdale Road” will be available for purchase and signing, and the program is open to the public.

The story behind the book began when 18-yearold Linda Stoltzfoos of Bird-in-Hand was kidnapped on Beechdale Road on Sunday, June 21, 2020, and later murdered by Justo Smoker. Shertzer is Justo’s niece, and Rogers

is Justo’s brother-in-law. “Beechdale Road” is their attempt to share their story of grief, anger, and pain, but also the grace, kindness, and mercy of the Amish community.

Shertzer works as an adult advocate at The Factory Ministries in Paradise. She was recently married to her husband, Tanner.

Rogers has served as lead pastor at Grace Point Church of Paradise for more than 20 years. He is active in various community roles, including coaching basketball. He has been married to Jen for more than 25 years, and they have three children and one dog. For directions, visit www.fairmount homes.org.

Event to showcase zines

The second annual Lancaster Zine Fest will be held on Saturday, April 6, from noon to 5 p.m. at Southern Market, 100 S. Queen St. After a sold-out first fest that attracted hundreds of attendees, the event will expand to two floors at Southern Market and feature more than 60 independent artists and writers showcasing a variety of self-published works.

Zines, pronounced “zeens” - short for magazines or fanzines - are self-published booklets that often feature alternative perspectives and collaborations. Zines have a rich history within

underground culture and provide a grassroots form of expression for artists to share their ideas with a wider audience. The Lancaster Zine Fest aims to provide a platform for this art form, celebrating and promoting zines and the authors and artists who create them. Attendees may connect with creators and browse a variety of zines and art items available for purchase. Zine topics may include music, art, comics, poetry, politics, collage, and photography.

In addition to vendors, the event will include free workshops on zine-making, paper-making, book-binding, drawing, and writing for people of all ages, allowing festival attendees to learn about the craft from experienced creators.

The event is free and open to people of all ages. For more information, email lancasterzf@gmail. com, contact Kim Holland at notthatkimholland@ gmail.com, visit www .lancasterzinefest.com or search for @lancaster zinefest on Instagram. People may also search for #lancasterzinefest on social media.

Veritas Community posts sermon series

The Veritas Community will begin a new sermon series titled “Seven” on Sunday, April 7. The church gathers every Sunday at 10:30 a.m. at HUB 450, 450 N. Prince St., Lancaster. The first 15 minutes of the gathering are dedicated to fellowship.

The new series will explore Revelation 2 and 3, which contain letters to seven churches in Asia Minor. These churches were seeking to follow Jesus in the midst of the Roman Empire. The series will seek to answer the question “What can we learn about following Jesus as individuals and as a community in 2024 and in the midst of our own empires from these seven letters written to these seven churches around

2,000 years ago?”

The series will begin with the letter to the church in Ephesus in Revelation 2:1-7 on April 7. Additional weeks will focus on the churches in Smyrna, using the text Revelation 2:8-11, on April 14; Pergamum, Revelation 2:12-17, on April 21; Thyatira, Revelation 2:18-29 on April 28; Sardis, Revelation 3:1-6 on May 5; Philadelphia, Revelation 3:7-13 on May 12; and Laodicea, Revelation 3:14-22 on May 19. On Sunday, May 26, the church will hold a Memorial Day weekend picnic.

Rediscovering Lancaster’s hidden treasure

In 1863, German woodworker Michael Dentzel sent his 17-year-old son, Gustav, to open a cabinet store the United States. Gustav began crafting carousels, including one that was installed in Rocky Springs Park in Lancaster in 1899. As improvements were made to the park over the years, the carousel was enhanced as well; a building was constructed around the carousel, and it was upgraded with mechanisms that run on electricity instead of steam. The attraction remained at the park until 1982, but few Lancaster County residents know what became of Gustav’s famous carousel since then.

The longer it remained at Rocky Springs Park, the more the carousel became intertwined with Lancaster’s history. In 1963, local residents began protesting at the park due to its segregated pool, and the attractions were closed to the public in 1968. Rocky Springs Park reopened more than a decade later, but attendance was heavily impacted by the nuclear accident at ThreeMile Island and a local polio outbreak. To ensure its safety, the carousel was removed from Rocky Springs in 1982. It was placed in Lake Lansing Park in Michigan the

following year, where the carousel was active until the park’s closure in 1986. In 1989, the carousel was moved to Dollywood, an amusement park in Tennessee owned by country singer Dolly Parton. The carousel was rebranded as the Dollywood Dentzel Carousel, and it remained at Dollywood for nearly a decade. Finally, after being purchased by a group known as the Friends of the Rocky

Springs Carousel in 1998, the historic ride returned to Lancaster, where it has hidden in storage ever since.

Despite the historical significance and rarity of the Rocky Springs Carousel, every attempt at restoring the Rocky Springs Carousel to its former glory and finding a new home for it has been unsuccessful. According to a 2020 census conducted by the National Carousel

Association, the ride is one of 208 classic wood carousels in North America. Of these 208 antiques, only 18 were manufactured by the Dentzel Carousel Company.

In 2021, Willow Street resident Eileen Gregg published a book to chronicle the story of the famous attraction titled “Lancaster’s Hidden Treasure: The Rocky Springs Dentzel Carousel.” The book includes the history of the Dentzel family and photos of the ride that have never been published before.

On Jan. 29, 2024, Gregg organized the screening of the first half of a film at Willow Valley Communities that includes videos of the carousel in use during the ‘90s. The footage was taken by Robert Scuorzo of Henderson, N.C., who sent it to Gregg for safekeeping. Gregg plans to hold a viewing of the film’s second half in the near future.

“I am very fortunate to have the film,” Gregg said. “The first half of the film shows the carousel in operation, and some of the scenes are of the carousel’s final day of operation that took place at the end of the 1998 Christmas season.”

For more information or to find out when the next film screening will take place, search for “Lancaster’s Hidden Treasure - The Rocky Springs Dentzel Carousel” on Facebook.
