IU13’s Transition Programs Prepare Students for Life

Employment is not just about a paycheck. Jobs can affect our self-worth, our relationships and our confidence.

Lancaster-Lebanon Intermediate Unit (IU) 13 is in the education business, and at least two of its programs are specifically designed to prepare young people for the workforce.

“For these students, work is especially important,” said Gina Guatta, who’s been the supervisor of IU13’s Lancaster secondary transition programs for 12 years.

“For some, they’ve been told they can’t work. They feel proud when they make a contribution. Part of it is growing up, going to school, going to work and taking the next step.”

Lancaster-Lebanon IU13, which is located at 1020 New Holland Ave., Lancaster, sponsors four work immersion programs and three school-towork programs, all secondary transition programs created to teach specific work skills and soft skills and prepare students for life. The programs are designed for students with intellectual and learning disabilities.

“We do a lot of modeling,” said Guatta. “Work ethic is difficult to teach. But you can set expectations high and help (students) reach those expectations. For the most part, we’re getting them there.”

Your Next PA Adventure Starts Here

“I like to call this event ‘the most fun you’ll have planning your vacation,’” said Wendy Royal, event coordinator for the PA Family Travel Fair. “It’s free to attend. You can go around, get all kinds of informationvisitors’ guides, brochures and information about things only the locals know.”

The eighth annual PA Family Travel Fair will be held on Saturday, April 11, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Lebanon Valley Expo Center and Fairgrounds, 80 Rocherty Road, Lebanon. It will feature more than 50 vendors and exhibitors showcasing destinations and attractions from throughout the state.

“They are there to hand out free information. There’s no selling,” Royal said. “You can talk to the vendors, and they can answer any questions you have. Nobody knows their area or their attraction better than they do.”

Vendors will represent all corners of the state, providing ideas for summer getaways, day trips or longer vacations. Participants will include amusement parks; campgrounds; museums; and visitor bureaus, including the PA Great Outdoors Visitors Bureau.

You can take the company out of the country, but you can’t take the

Formerly known as New Holland Machine Company or Case New Holland, CNH has grown into a global conglomerate that its founders never could’ve imagined. But the company will always be linked to the New Holland area - its farming, its work ethic, its ingenuity.

“People love the outdoors in Pennsylvania. One of our new vendors is the Keystone Elk Country Alliance,” Royal said, adding that the Elk County-based group will have lots of information on the elk herds that populate the region. “They’ll have information on the best times to see the elk, and they’ll give people lots of ideas of things to do in the area.”

New this year, the PA Family Travel Fair will feature two grand prize giveaways.

Both secondary transition programs require the entire school year to complete. Participants in the work immersion programs spend part of their school days performing work assignments at business partners and the other part of their school days reviewing performances, correcting mistakes and learning curriculum in classroom settings. Among the participating businesses are Moravian Manor Communities in

Lititz, Masonic Village retirement community in Elizabethtown, Willow Valley Communities in Willow Valley, Lancaster County Career and Technology Center and Lancaster General Health in the city.

One of the missions of the school-to-work programs, which emphasize community-based training in real-world settings, is to prepare students for the work immersion programs. Some of the instruction performed in the

introductory programs are performed at Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology in Lancaster and at IU13’s Burle Business Park location.

“The work immersion programs are for students in their final years of school, and the goal is to get them employed,” said Guatta, a resident of West Hempfield Township. “We want these students to increase their skills to attain and maintain employment. We want them to

be competitively employed. We want them to build confidence and experience.”

Currently, there are more than 80 students with disabilities enrolled in IU13’s work immersion and school-to-work programs. The Lancaster secondary transition students are typically between 17 and 21 and reside in all 16 Lancaster County public school districts served by IU13. Students are referred by their home school districts and then go through application and interview processes to gain entry into the programs.

“Some are students who fall through the cracks, and some are students who a typical high school setting isn’t going to help,” said Guatta. “They want to work. They want to make their ways in life. We want them to be successful. They want to be successful. Sometimes it’s hard for students with special needs to fit in. Maybe they didn’t have a dream, but they move forward when they see they can do something.”

Depending upon individual circumstances, secondary transition students receive instruction and guidance from IU13 job trainers and mentors from participating business partners. Students learn time management, problem-solving skills, teambuilding, enhanced communications, goal setting, independence, social skills, résumé preparation and customer relation skills.

Success breeds success.

“I see (students) come to us as new interns and leave as graduates,” said Guatta. “I see how they’ve grown, and it’s internal growth. It’s a very different student than the one you’ve seen from the beginning. I feel fortunate that I get to be a part of their journeys.”

One of 29 intermediate units formed across the state in the 1970s, Lancaster-Lebanon IU13 serves as a bridge between local school districts and the Pennsylvania Department of Education and provides educational services, business services, technology support and professional development. Across all of its job training programs, IU13 works with over 700 business partners.

“We talk about work worth doing,” said Guatta. “This is work worth doing at its core. This is helping students become productive adults. We talk about trust and unity at IU13. We work together and build a team. I definitely see my programs as being at the core for what we do for society.”

Hooked on Fun at Kids Fishing Derby

There’s something almost magical that happens when kids cast a line into a pond and try their luck at fishing. That simple act can lead to a lifelong hobby and an appreciation for nature, and that’s what the Donegal Fish and Conservation Association (DFCA) hopes to accomplish at its annual Kids Fishing Derby.

The event will be held on Saturday, April 11, from 8 to 11 a.m. at the reflecting pond on the grounds of Donegal Presbyterian Church, 1891 Donegal Springs Road, Mount Joy. All youths age 11 and under, as well as all handicapped anglers who possess a current Pennsylvania fishing license, are invited to participate.

“Fishing gives kids a way to learn about the outdoors, have fun with their family and experience a bit of accomplishment,” said Scot Harlacher, a volunteer with DFCA and a member of Donegal Presbyterian Church.

“My hope is that through fishing kids will learn to appreciate and love the outdoors and this will lead to a lifetime of exploring and caring for our natural world.”

Coinciding with the fishing derby, the church will host a pancake breakfast open to event

participants and the general public. It will be served from 7 to 11 a.m. in the church fellowship hall. Proceeds from the breakfast will support the church’s yearly mission trip to upstate New York.

“There is no need to make reservations for the pancake breakfast,” Harlacher said. “Simply show up that day with an appetite and consider a donation to the church’s annual mission trip.”

At the fishing derby, DFCA members will be on hand to help participants, but each angler must bring his or her own equipment and clean his or her own fish.

The fishing derby is just one way the DFCA promotes environmental stewardship.

“The DFCA was created in the early 1960s to be caretakers and stewards of the Donegal Creek watershed,” Harlacher said of the nonprofit. “We maintain a cooperative trout nursery with the PA Fish and Boat Commission and raise about 3,000 fish per year from fingerlings to adulthood. These trout are then stocked in local waterways for recreational fishing. We also partner with various conservation groups, civic organizations and landowners to promote healthy water conserva -

tion in our local area.”

The fishing derby offers a way for the organization to promote its mission and support youths who want to try their hand at reeling in a big one.

“I encourage anyone to attend the derby to spend time helping their children learn about this enjoyable outdoor activity,” Har -

lacher said. “It’s fun to come even without kids, too, just to watch, gain information about the DFCA or enjoy breakfast inside the church.”

The event will be held rain or shine, and the church will be open for kids to get hot food and drinks or simply warm up for a

Happy Easter!

“Here in Lancaster County, we see a lot of farms and a lot of farmers,” said Mark Lowery, the director of dealer development for CNH in North America. “Do people know our story? Certainly, people involved with agricultural production do. It goes back to, ‘Do you know where your food comes from?’ The broader population in Lancaster County might not know the story. But there’s been a long history of agricultural production here.”

It’s a story of innovation, mergers and acquisitions and small-town values playing well on a world stage.

The roots of CNH can be traced to a New Holland barn 131 years ago and a gentleman named Abe Zimmerman. Today, CNH, which is headquartered in Great Britain, operates 40 plants around the world; employs a total of 35,000 workers; and generates in excess of $20 billion in global revenue.

“CNH is a global brand, but a

lot of people don’t know it was originally named after a town in eastern Lancaster County,” said Lowery. “We owe a lot to this local area and the innovations that made us a global brand.”

CNH still operates a location in its 6,000-resident hometown of New Holland, at 500 Diller Road. But thanks to advances in technology, the operation looks a lot different than it did a century ago.

CNH’s New Holland location is a 350-acre campus consisting of five buildings - an administration building, a technical center focusing on research, development and design, a building for combine field testing, a technical training center and a home for CNH industrial capital. The local campus also operates a company farm at the site.

The New Holland location of CNH employs about 900 workers.

Holland and bringing in people who are passionate about the products.”

CNH manufactures off-road equipment for agriculture and construction, everything from tractors to harvesting equipment, from balers to sprayers, from utility vehicles to implements. Every product CNH makes is designed to maximize human energies.

“We have 11,000 patents registered for products that we invented or innovated,” said Lowery, a resident of Willow Street. “Engineering influences all the products we make.”

“As far as agriculture goes, the farmer and rancher are our primary customers,” continued Lowery. “They use our products to feed and make food. Certainly, the focus is, ‘How do we help people be more efficient?’

Farmers and ranchers have to continue to be more efficient.

with Ed Nolt, the inventor of a small square baler.

“The key innovation that made the site important was the square baler,” said Lowery. “That propelled New Holland as a company. It had immediate success and it had a global effect.”

During the 1990s, the New Holland enterprise became affiliated with both Ford and Fiat. In 1999, the company that is now CNH was created.

“To have a homegrown company - with local people who have supported it - make a global impact is important to New Holland and Pennsylvania,” said Lowery. “For a lot of folks, from here and across Lancaster County, this company has been very important, and I think they want to see that success continue. There are so many people who have a connection, either people who worked here or whose parents worked here.”

“I think one of the keys to the evolution is that our pace never slows down for research and development,” said Lowery, “and one of those research and development centers is here in New Holland. It’s about a lot of talented people and having them in the right places. It’s about investing in sites like New

Travel Fair

“We have two big getaways this year, instead of one like we’ve had in the past,” Royal said. “Both are for families of four, and they include lodging, attractions, vouchers, gift cards for restaurants and more. One is from Happy Valley Adventure Bureau, and one is from Destination Gettysburg.”

The first 500 people in the door at the travel fair will receive a goodie bag, perfect for stuffing full of information picked up at vendor booths, Royal said, adding, “Your bag will be full by the end of the day.”

The event is truly for the whole family, with plenty of options for kids to have fun.

“We have a kids’ passport, which encourages kids to interact with the vendors,” Royal explained. “One lucky youngster will win eight all-day passes to DelGrosso’s Amusement Park & Laguna Splash Water Park.”

Additionally, a balloon artist will entertain from 10 a.m. to noon, and airbrush tattoos will be offered from 1 to 3 p.m.

Leamer, a local historian who will offer a presentation sponsored by Visit Lebanon Valley from 9 to 10:50 a.m.

Clyde Peeling’s Reptiland will present a program at noon and will also have a booth set up all day for visitors to interact with some of the organization’s animals.

Mascots will also be on-site, including Echo the Bat from Lincoln Caverns.

“She’s a lot of fun for the kids,” Royal said. “They really like meeting her.”

Along with vendors, the fair will feature a program from Sam

“In honor of the 250th birthday of America, we wanted to bring somebody in who can talk about what life was like during Colonial times,” Royal said.

At 1:15 p.m., Pennsylvania Parks and Forests Foundation president Marci Mowery will speak.

“She’s going to talk about opportunities for families in our state parks,” Royal said. “She was a schoolteacher, so she makes her

presentations relatable for kids.” Food will be available for purchase at a restaurant on-site at the expo center.

“It’s the kind of food you would expect to have at a county fair,” Royal said, noting that the restaurant is set up cafeteria style and is located right across the hall from the travel fair.

Royal has been organizing the PA Family Travel Fair since 2018, although she had been thinking about the idea for several years before that.

“Over the years, I’ve always been astonished that we don’t know what’s going on in our own backyard,” she said. “There are so many cool things in our state that people just aren’t aware of.”

Tourism is big business in Pennsylvania. According to a 2024 economic impact study, the most recent study completed, visitors to the state spent $49.9 billion, equating to $144 million a day. Tourism also supports more than 500,000 jobs in the state and generates more than $5 billion in tax revenue to benefit the state.

More than 2,000 people attended last year’s PA Family Travel Fair, and Royal is excited to host it in a new venue this year, with lots of space and plenty of free parking.

“Kids love this event because there’s always something fun to do. Parents love it because it’s free and they can get lots of information,” she said. “It’s just a fun day and an opportunity to find out things they didn’t know about what there is to do in our state.”
